Thirty-six

He woke up the next morning to find his phone ringing. He realized he had fallen asleep on the chair with his head on the bed. He rubbed his tired and sleepy eyes, then checked his caller id. It was his mother, so he answered it.

“Hi mum” his voice was hoarse.

“Honey!” her sympathetic voice rang from the other end of the line. “Did I wake you up? I'm sorry. Alan called. He told me what happened. How is she?”

Tristan glanced at Angela's comatose face and replied “hopefully, she'll be fine. She's unconscious though.”

“What happened?” she asked in a concerning tone.

Tristan sighed heavily.

“It's a long story”

“I've got time.”

“Well…” He began and then told her everything. From the pregnancy to how her twin came to town to the whole kidnapping, the surgery, the amnesia and her ending up in a coma.

His mother was silent for a while, probably trying to process the whole thing. When she eventually spoke, her voice was breaking and shook.

“Mum, don't cry, she'll be okay.” he tried to reassure
