Chapter 1

"Is the laundry done yet? Is the meal ready? All you do is laze around at home every day! I truly don't understand why my daughter ended up marrying someone like you!"

Hearing Margaret Jensen's scornful voice, Victor Quinn remained silent.

Yes. He was married.

He had married into the Jensen family, becoming a live-in son-in-law to the most stunning CEO in Northlake City.

Their wedding had been a shock to many in Northlake City. No one could comprehend how someone as wealthy and beautiful as Sophie Jensen could marry a penniless nobody with no background—someone who couldn't even afford the wedding expenses.

On the day of the wedding, not a single member of the Jensen family had attended except his future mother-in-law, Margaret. She had brought along a group of gossips who had criticized him the entire day. Even after the marriage, Margaret never saw him as worthy. She bossed him around daily.

Perhaps in her eyes, her daughter could have married a rich man and elevated the family's status. Instead, they were stuck in this situation, with Sophie's company struggling and no capable son-in-law to step in and help.

"Mom, my feelings for Sophie are true, and she's gradually warming up to me," Victor replied.

On their wedding night, Sophie had made it clear. She didn't need a rich husband. She just needed someone who could take care of everything at home while she focused on her career.

She had also made it clear that she had no intention of truly becoming his wife or having children with him. She felt nothing for a stranger.

At the time, Sophie had even said, "I'll try to be won over by you. The day you succeed, I'll hand the company over to you. I'll cook for you and raise our children at home."

For the sake of that promise, Victor had endured three years of hardship in the Jensen family. But a man who stayed at home all day, doing housework like a woman, was bound to be looked down upon.

At his reply, Margaret's temper flared.

She jabbed a finger right in his face and scolded, "True feelings? You're just a stray mutt chasing after a pedigree show dog!

"All right. Sophie needs three million for emergency funding. If you can come up with it in three days, I won't meddle in your business anymore. But if you can't, you and Sophie must divorce! This is my final compromise!"

"So, the crisis has finally come." Victor sighed.

Over the years, he had secretly modified the documents Sophie brought home, which had helped her company thrive. But recently, Victor had noticed Sophie making increasingly risky investments. He had warned her before, but she hadn't taken it seriously.

"Three million?"

For a broke, live-in son-in-law, this was an impossible sum of money to acquire. But three years ago, this amount was nothing more than pocket change to him.

As the most outstanding young CEO in Clearwater City, Victor had once turned five million into twenty billion in just three years. His talent was so exceptional that the elders in the family had unanimously recommended him as the next head of the Quinn family.

However, Victor wasn't truly a Quinn by blood. His uncle Liam's son had fabricated evidence, accusing him of embezzling family funds. In a series of carefully orchestrated schemes, Victor had been cast out of the family.

Thinking of this, Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out a card. The twenty billion that once proved his financial prowess was still in that account. But since the card belonged to the Quinn family, it had been frozen due to financial disputes. He couldn't touch a single cent.

At that moment, Sophie walked in. Her friend Lena Sullivan followed behind.

Sophie was breathtakingly beautiful. She had the face of a celebrity. At just twenty four years old, she was already a famous CEO.

Seeing her slightly haggard expression, Victor felt a pang of sorrow.

Back when he was homeless, Sophie had been the one to save him. She had given him food, shelter, and even cared for him. When he had asked her why, she had simply said, "You remind me of someone I once admired. I don't know his name."

Just because of that, Sophie had chosen Victor as her husband. He was to handle everything at home while she fought for her career.

After three years together, Victor had long since fallen for this hardworking, determined woman.

"Sophie, have you secured the funding?" Margaret asked.

"Don't worry, Mom," Sophie said. "I'll figure something out. Haven't we always managed before? This time will be no different."

Sophie herself found the situation strange. Her company had faced multiple crises, yet every time, some mysterious force seemed to help her pull through.

"If you can't, then just divorce this loser, Sophie," Margaret said disparagingly. "Ethan seems interested in you. With his family's wealth, he could assist you effortlessly!"

Sophie frowned. She knew her mother despised Victor, partly because she had expected him to handle household affairs properly. As a result, Victor had endured endless ridicule and was labeled a useless freeloader.

But Sophie had a gut feeling that Victor was more capable than he seemed. Whenever she faced tough decisions at work, his casual remarks always gave her unexpected insights.

"Mom, I won't divorce him."

"Sophie, be reasonable. I know you're kind and soft-hearted, but this is about your future! Do you know how many times our family has been laughed at because of him? I don't care anymore. Whoever can bring you three million dollars, that's who you'll marry!"

Victor saw how serious Margaret was. He also saw the concern on Sophie's face. If she wasn't truly desperate, she wouldn't have mentioned the problem at all.

Stepping forward, Victor said firmly, "I'll find a way to get the three million dollars."

"Do you expect me to believe you can land three million dollars? If you manage to pull it off, I'll give you my clothes and run naked down the street," Lena scoffed, seething with anger. If this useless man had money, he wouldn't have become the laughingstock of the city, bringing shame upon Sophie at every social event.

Even Sophie didn't believe him. "Victor, don't say things you can't back up."

If Victor really had three million dollars, he wouldn't have ended up on the streets years ago.

'Is he planning to borrow the money?' Sophie thought.

In three years, she had never seen Victor with a single friend.

"A friend of mine called recently," Victor said. "He's rich. A while ago, he even invited me to dinner and offered me money to start a business. I'll borrow the money from him."

With that, Victor walked out.

"I can't believe this loser actually has a wealthy friend," Margaret sneered. "If you're lying, you'd better not step foot into this house again!"

But Sophie had noticed something.

After three years together, she knew Victor well. When he had declared he could get three million dollars, his expression was resolute. It was almost as if he was about to do something he had sworn never to do.

Even when he had been humiliated at family gatherings, he had never shown that look before.

"Is he planning to beg someone he never wanted to ask for help?" Sophie murmured. She felt an ache in her heart.

-

Meanwhile, Victor rode off on his second-hand electric scooter. Stopping on a deserted roadside, he clenched his jaw and dialed a number.

The call was quickly answered.

"Why are you calling me? Let me guess. You need money." A middle-aged man's mocking voice came through.

"Liam, I need three million dollars."

"And why would I give money to an outsider like you?"

Liam emphasized the word 'outsider'. If it weren't for his precious son, he wouldn't have known that Victor wasn't actually part of the Quinn family by blood. But in the three years since Victor left, even Liam hadn't expected just how important Victor had been. Not only did he maintain connections with many family leaders, but the moment top-tier families learned Victor was no longer with the Quinns, they had canceled their partnerships one after another. As a result, the Quinn family had declined over those years, and now the family's elders and shareholders were all hoping for Victor's return."I'm begging you," Victor said. "Unfreeze my card. I don't want to completely fall out with the family over money. You should know that if I get serious, I absolutely have the ability to do so.""Damn it!"-Bang!Liam slammed his phone against the table. After hanging up, he sat in his chair, his expression gloomy. When Victor pulled out the Premium Gold Card, Justin trembled all over. Beside him, Maya was also stunned. She held her breath. The Premium Gold Card was an exclusive privilege reserved for clients with deposits exceeding 10 billion. Such individuals were either top-tier tycoons or members of prestigious families, VIPs whom even Frank Luther, the bank's president, would personally welcome with a smile.Justin quickly recovered from his shock and sneered. "Pulling out a fake card to show off?"It wasn't surprising. Victor was dressed poorly and had arrived on a battered electric scooter. How could someone like him possibly own a Premium Gold Card? Was it a fake card?Victor chuckled and gave Justin a cold look. "Are you blind? You call yourself a manager? You can't even recognize a real Premium Gold Card!"Justin adjusted his glasses and nodded mockingly. "It does look pretty convincing. If I hadn't worked at the bank for so many years and met countless VIP clients, I might've been

Clenching his jaw, Justin forced an awkward smile and walked over to the electric scooter. He bent down and bowed. "I'm sorry! Kicking you earlier was my fault. Please forgive me!"The electric scooter of course didn't respond. Justin stood beside it awkwardly."Mr. Quinn, what do you think?" Frank asked with an ingratiating smile."All right, just get my money. I've got other things to do," Victor said. He waved Justin off, unwilling to press the matter further. He had more important things to deal with."Got it!" Seeing that Victor seemed somewhat appeased, Frank quickly called Maya over. "What are you standing there for? Hurry up and assist Mr. Quinn!""Yes, of course!" Maya finally snapped out of her shock and walked over to Victor with a sweet smile. "Mr. Quinn, please follow me."Soon, the three million was ready, packed into two bags for Victor. When they came out, Justin was still standing beside the electric scooter.Victor ignored him, got on the electric scooter,

So much money was laid out before them that it made their eyes blur."Where did you get this money? Did you beg for it or something?" Lena was so startled that she couldn't stay seated.Sophie was equally shocked. After checking the bills, she confirmed they were real."Victor, be honest. Where did all this money come from?" Sophie's expression was stern as she looked at Victor."It's all mine," Victor muttered.Hearing that, Lena burst out laughing. "Quit joking! Your money? Besides the thirty thousand you got from the Jensens for marrying in and the monthly allowance Sophie gives you, where else would you have money from?"Victor replied honestly, "I still have twenty billion."He was telling the truth. His card did indeed hold a balance of twenty billion, but Lena and Sophie didn't believe him."Twenty billion? You really think you're some big shot, huh?" Lena sneered and looked at Victor with disdain. "If you really had twenty billion, I'd strip down on the spot and let you

On the contrary, she was a very materialistic woman.Ryan might seem like a good catch, but could he compare to Victor? Forget about this single Silk Haven store. Every Silk Haven store in Clearwater City combined still couldn't match Victor's wealth.Choosing between them wasn't even a question."Can you stop being so annoying? You keep chattering around me. Isn't that woman with you?" Maya finally lost her patience. She seemed irritated. She snuck a glance at Victor, but he showed no reaction. She was a little disappointed."Miss, as the outlet manager here at Silk Haven, it's only natural that I serve my customers." Ryan's face darkened slightly at Maya's harsh words, but he still forced a smile.'Damn woman! Just wait until I get my hands on you! I'll make sure you regret this!' It has to be a fake card, right?"The machine beeped, indicating the transaction had been approved."Sir, here is your card." The sales associate respectfully handed the Premium Gold Card back to Victor with both hands. The payment going through had proven beyond doubt that the card was real and Victor really had that kind of money."All right, apologize. A strikingly dressed waitress walked over. The moment she saw Shawn's expensive outfit, she kept throwing seductive glances at him.Shawn chuckled, and as he took the bill, he didn't forget to give the waitress a slap on the ass. When he saw the bill, his smile grew even brighter.A total of over six hundred thousand. Even for him, it was painful to fork out that much. But for a loser, it was an astronomical price. It was exactly the result he wanted."Oh dear, Victor, this is all my fault. After rounding it down, it's just six hundred thousand. Should I cancel everything I ordered?" Shawn put on a fake apologetic look, but everyone could hear the mockery in his tone."Oh? Let me take a look." Victor had assumed the bill was much higher. He took the bill and frowned slightly. He had thought it would've exceeded a million. With twenty billion to his name, even spending a million was nothing more than a drop in the bucket."Victor, if you can't afford it, I can help you out. Victor ordered four more bottles of whiskey. He then pointed at Shawn, Mark, and Edwin. "The three of you drink four bottles, and I'll drink one by myself. How about that?"Shawn and the others burst into laughter. They were nearly out of breath. They genuinely thought Victor must have lost his mind. To them, Victor was just a straight-laced student. They had never seen him drink before, while they were seasoned drinkers.Though the whiskey had a high alcohol content, there was no way Shawn and the others could back down without losing face. Wanting to humiliate Victor, they readily agreed."Victor, let me say this upfront. If you lose, I won't be paying a single cent for you." Shawn smirked, already convinced of his victory.Edwin and Mark were eager to see Victor embarrass himself and quickly chimed in with agreement. The onlookers cast sympathetic glances at Victor. Landon's eyes narrowed slightly, his gaze turning colder.Oblivious to the looming danger, Steve sneered and pointed at Victor. "That loser right there.""Oh." Philip was afraid Steve might retaliate, so after saying a few words, he didn't dare to talk back anymore.Seeing Philip back down, Steve spat in disdain. He then deliberately moved closer to Landon as if this would make them appear to be on better terms.Landon looked at Steve with disgust. He had seen plenty of bootlickers before, and for people like Steve, his response was to simply ignore them."Mr. Bennett, let me treat you to a meal and some drinks," Steve said, completely unaware of Landon's true thoughts. He tried his best to act friendly.Landon pushed Steve away with a sneer. "Drinks? You think you're worthy of drinking with me?"That shove snapped Steve back to reality, leaving him standing there awkwardly."Mr. Carter, didn't you just say that if someone came forward as a partner or guarantor today, you'd eat your contract? He quickly slapped his own face, but the truth was undeniable. He hadn't misheard.Philip and the others were also dumbfounded. Could they really be this lucky? At such a critical moment, someone was actually willing to work with their company. Regardless of the reason, someone stepping up to collaborate with them was an enormous blessing. They were thrilled beyond words. They could never have guessed that Landon's willingness to act as a guarantor was all because of Victor.Sophie was stunned for a few seconds. Philip and the others scoffed, convinced that Victor had completely lost his mind."Hah! I refuse to believe it. Besides me, who else would dare work with you? This guy was a complete degenerate, pushing his limits more and more."You don't get a say in this," Steve said nonchalantly, spreading his hands. As much as she disliked Steve, he was the only one who could help her. But now, Victor had completely ruined everything."Apologize to him." She shot Victor a glare. This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for collaboration, and she couldn't let him mess it up.Victor had already apologized once. Philip and the others couldn't hold back anymore. The more Steve took, the less they would get. It was as if their share of the pie was being eaten away. They didn't dare lash out at Steve, but venting their anger on a worthless nobody was easy enough. If it weren't for Victor, none of this would be happening.Sophie frowned. Steve demanding a stake in the company wasn't the worst thing in the world, but it was far from trivial. He was obviously setting her up.If he decided to stop cooperating one day, she'd find herself in the same situation again, with Steve demanding even more. That was what worried her the most."Even without me here, do you really think he would have made it that simple?" Victor asked. He was just stating the truth. Even if he hadn't argued with Steve, Steve would have found another way to tighten the noose. It was only a matter of time."It doesn't matter. This is still your fault." Philip and the others glared at him, their voices harsh with resentment.

Sophie was furious. When things were going well, these people rushed to claim credit, but when trouble arose, they left her to deal with it alone.Still, to save the company, she had no other choice. She hesitated for a moment. It was just a meal and nothing too serious. Besides, if she didn't resolve this crisis soon, the consequences would be far worse.Although she loathed Steve for taking advantage of the situation, she had no choice but to take things one step at a time. She cast an apologetic glance at Victor, about to agree."Wait." Victor suddenly spoke up."What do you think you're doing? You worthless nobody, do you think your opinion matters?" Steve shot Victor a look of disdain. To him, Victor was utterly insignificant."Mr. Carter is certainly being generous, all this just for a meal," Victor said, his tone laced with sarcasm.Steve sneered. "What? You're unhappy about it?""Not at all," Victor replied casually. "But don't you think you're exploiting the situation
