The registrar, Mister McAlester, oriented them on what a sacred vow the oath of marriage was for the first five minutes after Lydia and Jayden stepped into his office.
"Do you understand all this?" Mister McAlester asked, his grey eyes darting between them. "Yes," Jayden replied, and when she remained silent, his head turned to her. His already intimidating eyes hardened on her, and they silently told her to answer the question. "Yes, I do, too." She replied in a small voice. The registrar nodded. "Okay, then that's good. Do you have your oaths, or shall we go with the one designed by the marriage registry?" He asked. "We do not have any vows written out," Jayden answered, reaching out to place his hand on Lydia's, patting it a little. She shook her head, unsure if she was also supposed to respond. "Then we will use the one designed by the marriage registry." Mister McAlester said and picked up the file before him, which had the names and information they filled out when they entered his office. "Do you, Miss Lydia Mars, take Mister Jayden White as your lawfully wedded husband to love and to cherish, in sickness and in health, good times and bad, until death do you part?" he asked. Lydia slightly nodded and said, "Yes, I do." Mister McAlester turned his attention to Jayden. "Do you, Mister Jayden White, take Miss Lydia Mars as your lawfully wedded husband to love and to cherish, in sickness and in health, good times and bad, until death do you part?" "Yes, I do," Jayden replied and squeezed down on her hand. The older man first presented the marriage certificate to Jayden. Jayden pulled out a pen from his pocket, and he signed the certificate with his left hand before moving it to Lydia, and she signed it. "Do you have the rings?" the registrar asked, staring at Jayden. Jayden nodded, dug his hand into his inner pocket, and pulled out two rings. He took Lydia's hand and slid the ring onto her ring finger, where her engagement ring stayed, and she repeated the same action for him. "The matrimonial rites are all completed, so you may now kiss your bride." This part had skipped Lydia's mind all the while she thought about marrying Jayden White. He was now her husband, which meant he also had the right to special privileges reserved for married people. Sex and everything that came along with it. Jayden White would get to kiss her, touch her, and have sex with her whenever he wanted to. These she never considered, and now that she did, her body revolted. Did she even have a choice? In the end, he was paying her a million dollars, which was more than enough compensation. Wasn't it? Lydia asked questions that no one could answer. "Come," Jayden said, snapping her out of her thoughts, and he pulled her to her feet. Uncertainty clouded her eyes, and she held her breath, but his hand reached out and stroked her face, calming the tide of fear that had risen within her. It worked like magic because it silenced every doubt about the thought of intimacy she had in her mind. He closed the space between them within a second, and his soft lips grazed over hers, seeking a kiss. Fireworks exploded within Lydia at the touch of his lips, and she forgot everything except the strange feeling that this man, whom she barely knew, had now awakened in her. Jayden deepened the kiss, and her toe curled at how fulfilling this delicious kiss felt. It probably lasted for a few seconds, but she was drunk with desire as he pulled away from her. He released her and stepped back, but it took a few more seconds for her hazy head to clear. She took a deep breath and turned away from him, trying to shield whatever control she had left. Her emotions and body had betrayed her, and this was terrible. "This should be in your possession." The registrar said and stretched the certificate box, which had the registry logo on it, to Lydia. Lydia took hold of it and wrapped her hands around it. "Can I have a word with her alone?" Mister McAlester asked, taking Jayden and Lydia back a little. "Is there a reason for that?" Jayden asked defensively. The older man shrugged casually and said, "Just standard routine." Jayden didn't believe his words, but he glanced at Lydia before walking out. Lydia turned to the registrar and found his suspicious grey eyes fixed on her as if she were a book he was reading. "What is it?" she asked, gripping the certificate box tightly. "I have a daughter about your age, so I cannot ignore everything I have seen. I must ask, Is the decision to marry against your will?" He asked, going straight to the point. "What?" Lydia's eyes widened. Her body language must have led to this conclusion for the older man. Was it so obvious? "Is he forcing you to marry him? If he is, that goes against the Marriage Act and this registry will arrest him and annul your marriage. You will be free." He carefully explained it to her. Jayden didn't look like a man who would go down easily. He would get free someway and come for her. It was nice that this registrar had a good heart and wanted her safe, but there was no turning back. Besides, it wasn't just her; there was also one million dollars at stake. She laughed casually and shook her head. "He is not forcing me to do anything; if anything, I forced him into this. This is what I want too; I am just having difficulty adjusting to it all." Everything Lydia said was true to an extent, and she hoped he believed her. The suspicion in his eyes earlier decreased, and he nodded. "If you are certain of that, I wish you the best in your new married life, Mrs White." Mrs. White. The name echoed in Lydia's head. She was now a married woman. She was married to Jayden White, the stranger she met this morning. It indeed happened. She would never know what the next twelve months had in store for her. In escaping her life in the jail cell, she had imprisoned herself in a completely different one. The only difference was that this came with a financial reward.Lydia stepped out of the registrar's office and walked towards Jayden White, who stood leaning against the wall with his hand in his pocket. He had now removed his suit and hung it over his shoulder, leaving him in his black long-sleeve. His head, resting against the wall, was tilted so that his eyes stared at the ceiling. Even though this man wasn't looking at her, he affected her in ways she couldn't explain. His sun-kissed skin was the definition of perfectly toned, and Lydia caught herself longing to run her hand over his face. The memory of the kiss they had shared in the registry office rushed into her mind, and she licked her dry bottom lip. It felt good—too good she wanted a do-over.She scolded herself for thinking about him that way because they didn't have such a relationship; he wasn't the type of man she usually went for, and she still didn't know what plans he had for her. She couldn't lose focus just because the kiss they shared in the registrar's office was her best kis
Flashback to two years ago.Lydia noticed the distressed look on Anthony’s face as he stepped into her office. She had never seen him this defeated since they began dating. He always wore a happy face, which was new to her; nevertheless, her job as a girlfriend was to lessen his burden if possible and console him.“What’s wrong?” she asked, rising to her feet.“I think we are going to lose.”“Lose?” She echoed it, lost as to what he was talking about.“Do you remember the Boston drug trafficking case on trial?”Anthony had asked her to accompany him to Boston for their nine-month anniversary, and it was meant to be a week of no work, but he had taken her along to a quick business deal. Lydia had wandered around and entered an office with a ‘Love match’ tag on the door, only to find it stacked with cocaine. She knew it was cocaine because she had watched her parents abuse it as a child, and as an adult, she watched her brother abuse it.She had run away before anyone could see her, and
After another seven minutes of driving, the car pulled up, and the day had gone much darker. Adam opened the door and once again helped her out and onto her feet. Lydia glanced up at the massive, luxurious penthouse standing before her, tall and elegant, with a wide, opened window that had nothing to hide. It screamed money—not the one the Chesters had, but a different one—the one that didn't need much to show off because it was confident enough in its luxury. She knew he was rich when she saw the Rolls-Royce this afternoon, but how rich was he? Who is Jayden White, and how powerful is he?Jayden White was a powerful drug lord, so powerful that the justice system had failed to put him away. This was what she knew about him so far.Lydia didn't know what to make of this elegant structure illuminated by bright lights, but one thing was sure: this would be her prison for the next three hundred and sixty-five days."Can you walk?" Adam asked from beside her, and Lydia glanced at the older
Lydia drew a sharp breath at the sight of the man who had intruded on her space and immediately felt a new wave of fear. Surprise had her in a chokehold because she didn't anticipate this visit even though she should have. Was he here before she stepped out of the bathroom minutes ago to change, or did he come after? If he came in after, why didn't she hear the door open and the footstep that followed? And if he came before, did that mean he saw her nakedness? The thought of being seen by him sent an alarm through her head, and she felt uncomfortable. She had seen different sides of him today but never faced any of those in a physically vulnerable place. Vulnerable because this was the first time since meeting him that she was truly alone, and this man who terrified the very essence of her being stood feet away, staring at her like a lion stares at its prey before it devours them. She was no more than a prey with strength as frail as a worm."What are you doing in my room?" she demand
FlashbackA loud bang came on Jayden's prison cell, and he shook and pulled himself onto his elbow to see what the noise was about for an early morning. He found Finley Trump, the warder, standing before his cell, opening it up."Get up; you have a visitor." He said with a nonchalant tone."Who has a visitor?" Jayden's cellmate, Viktor Wade, asked from the lower bunk where he stayed.Finley glared at him for even asking. "You know who has a visitor because no one is coming for your ass." He replied harshly.Jayden didn't need to be told twice before he climbed off the bed and over to Finley, who put the cuffs on his wrist. He turned to Viktor, who seemed affected by the warder's harsh response and gave him an apologetic look before leaving."Who is waiting for me, sir?" Jayden asked, his curiosity getting the better of him."You will see when you get there," Finley replied grumpily, and from there on, they walked in silence. As they entered the visitor's room, Jayden found Rosie Queen
Jayden stopped at the desk of the secretary named Mandy Owens, and he smiled at her charmingly. The red-haired woman in a blue bodycon dress behind the counter stared up at him curiously, waiting for him to speak.“You are the most elegant secretary I have ever seen, and I’ve seen secretaries,” he said, staring at her in fascination. She blushed. “What do you want?”“I want to see your boss.” He whispered in a seductive tone. She bit her lips. “She’s currently in a meeting, but if you drop your name, I can put you on a schedule,” she suggested. His eyes darted towards the office, which belonged to Rosie. It had a privacy glass wall, and he couldn’t make out anything inside, so he turned to Mandy. “I don’t want to schedule an appointment. You see, I am an old friend of Rosie, and I came here to surprise her, so if I can wait for her to finish with her meeting?” he raised a suggestive brow at her.She chewed her bottom lip, thinking his words through before speaking. “Without an appoint
There are three hundred and fifty-one days more to go. It had been two weeks since Lydia's unfortunate imprisonment called marriage to Jayden White, the devil himself. She had stood at the window every day, every day watching to see if Jayden would return, but every day in the last thirteen had ended with no sign of him. His absence would have brought her peace if she didn't know he planned to destroy her.The days had been slow, the clock counted down at a slower pace, and yesterday had gone down the slowest, which drove her insane. Jayden White had left thirteen days ago after their fight and hadn't come back, and everyone working in the house had continued as if nothing was wrong. It seemed they were already used to his absence. The penthouse had always represented glamour and wealth, but in Lydia's reality, it was a prison. She had consoled herself by thinking about the one-million-dollar compensation, which she broke down to $2739 per day and $114 per hour. She kept her mind on t
"Lydia. Where are you?" Kevin Mars called out, stepping into the bedroom and not finding her. "Lydia, where are you?" Kevin Mars worked at a dairy farm seven hours drive from home, having dropped out of high school a year prior, so he left early and got back sometimes after a twelve-hour shift. Since he was barely home now, their parents, Claris and Michael, had turned their abuse on her and disciplined her when they felt like it, and sometimes it didn't make sense. Whenever Kevin was leaving, Lydia would ask him to take her along, but he told her it was work and here was better. Here wasn't better, and Lydia didn't understand why he would say that. "Under here," she replied, pulling up from under the bed so he could see her. His hazel eyes narrowed at her in confusion. "Why are you staying there?" "Mom says she will whip me when she gets home for being a naughty girl this morning. She wanted me to have cucumber, but I always feel sick whenever I go to school after eating cucumber.
