Chapter 19

MAXWELL'S POV

I woke up with a pounding headache and a heavy sense of confusion.

The early morning sunlight seeped into the room through the curtains, casting a faint yellow glow. I glanced at the time. 6:36am. Fair enough.

I ran my hands through my hair, and rolled over, feeling the cold emptiness beside me. Events of last night played out in my head.

I touched Hannah last night, and I didn't understand why. She responded as I'd have wanted, but pulled away at the last minute.

I was left alone with a very painful hard on. But that wasn't what bothered me. The usual Hannah would be ecstatic that I even kissed her. But last night, she acted like I was a total stranger. The look of disgust on her face as she pulled away haunted me, and I couldn't get the image out of my head.

It wasn't her, I reminded myself. She was just a replacement. At that moment, I had let myself forget this key detail. I allowed myself to believe, even for a fleeting second, that she was my wife. Something I had
