Poppy’s expression shifted instantly—surprise, confusion, and something else Serena couldn’t quite place.
"Yes! He won’t!" she blurted. "I went to ask for a divorce agreement, but he kept stalling, refusing to give me one!"
Serena crossed her arms and gave her a sidelong glance. “Then maybe you should go back and talk to him. It’s late, and honestly? There’s no point dragging this out anymore. If he isn’t tired of the games, I certainly am.”
Poppy’s face darkened. After a sharp glare, she tossed the skirt aside and stormed off.
Serena caught it just before it hit the floor.
As she watched Poppy retreat, she couldn’t help but add, “Oh, what a beautiful skirt. If you don’t want it, I’ll happily take it!”
Just then, a saleslady approached. She’d just finished helping a group of customers and now turned her attention to Serena with a polite bow.
“Ma’am, the mermaid skirt you’re holding is one of the key pieces from our new season. The lines and silhouette are incredibly flattering, especially for your figure. Would you like to try it on?”
Serena smiled, clearly pleased. “Yes, I’d love to. A skirt this pretty—how could I resist?”
Evening. The Blazes estate.
A grand crystal chandelier, at least three meters tall, cast a dazzling glow across the room.
Under its light, Bram and Henry sat sipping wine and chatting. Xavier sat nearby, clearly distracted. During a pause in conversation, he finally asked, “Uncle Bram, has Serena still not arrived?”
Bram waved a hand. “She called earlier—said she’d come on her own. I told her dinner starts at six-thirty. It’s past six now, so she should be here soon.”
Xavier tapped his fingers on the glass, trying to hide his restlessness.
This dinner had been a condition for agreeing to join X Corp, something his father had long pushed for. If Serena didn’t show up, he’d lose that leverage—and more.
Sensing his mood, Henry cleared his throat and said sharply, “Xavier, your uncle rarely has time for these gatherings. As the younger generation, you should know how to show some respect. What kind of example are you setting, sulking like this?”
Xavier understood immediately—his father was warning him.
Swallowing his frustration, he raised his glass and offered Bram a slight smile. “Uncle, I was being thoughtless. Please forgive me—I’ll make it up to you.”
Bram chuckled and waved it off. “It’s fine, really. You grew up right in front of me—almost like a second son. I wouldn’t fuss over something so small.”
Then he turned to Henry, voice softening with nostalgia. “Time really does fly. Xavier’s grown into such a fine young man. If only Serena hadn’t been so stubborn… the two of them could have—”
“Alright, alright,” Henry laughed, cutting him off. “We’re here to enjoy dinner, not dwell on the past. Come, drink up!”
Realizing he’d said too much, Bram raised his glass again and let the topic drop.
Xavier, however, felt a bitter pang. It was obvious—his father wanted nothing more to do with Serena. And if Henry had his way, Xavier wouldn’t be allowed near her either.
Still, he straightened his back and forced the doubt from his mind.
Serena would leave Clint soon. Once the divorce was finalized, nothing would stand in the way—not her status, not his father's disapproval.
He just needed to hold on a little longer.
Loving Serena had become second nature. It was in his blood now, something he couldn’t just switch off. She wasn’t just a dream anymore—she was the foundation of everything he believed in. If that dream collapsed, he wasn’t sure he could survive it.
As he sat lost in that thought, light footsteps echoed through the hall.
Then a familiar voice, full of laughter: “Uncle Blaze!”
Xavier’s head snapped up.
Serena stepped into view, wearing a pale lilac suit that hugged her figure in all the right places. Her makeup was fresh and flawless, her hair styled to perfection. She walked with a confident grace, her expression playful and radiant.
She looked... stunning.
But what struck Xavier most was the contradiction—there was something pure about her, almost innocent, despite the bold elegance she wore so effortlessly.
The phrase pure desire flashed in his mind. He’d always thought it was a silly term—something made up by men who idealized what they couldn’t have.
But now, seeing her, it felt like that phrase had been coined just for her.
With each step, her hips swayed just enough to drive him mad. Heat flushed through him, and he had to swallow hard to keep his composure.
Serena, of course, had no idea what he was going through.
She came to a stop behind him and gave Henry a polite nod, her voice warm. “Uncle Blaze, it’s been a while.”
“Serena’s here!” Henry greeted her with a wide smile. He looked her over, his expression friendly but calculating.
Then he turned to Bram with a chuckle. “She looks even more beautiful than the last time I saw her—seems to be getting younger by the day.”
Bram grinned, a trace of pride slipping through. “You’re flattering her too much. Say one nice thing, and she’ll already be acting smug. Say any more, and she might float right out of here.”
“I’m just being honest,” Henry replied with a light laugh.
“She’s my daughter—I know her best,” Bram said. “She’s just average. But Xavier here, now he’s the one who’s grown into a real head-turner. Put him in a crowd, and no one else stands a chance.”
“…”

The two elders exchanged compliments—genuine, but with a touch of exaggeration. They had once been close friends, but after years in their own circles, their bond had softened, layered now with social niceties.Serena barely noticed the change, but a slight frown formed on her face. Then a quiet murmur brushed past her ear:"Watching them go back and forth—isn't it a bit much?"Without turning, she tilted her head slightly, gritting her teeth. "I never said that.""Alright, you didn’t. I did." Xavier leaned closer, a smirk in his voice. "But if you're not annoyed, I definitely am. Come upstairs for a drink? I just had someone bring two bottles of ’87 Latour.""Latour?" Serena’s eyes lit up at the mention. Her mother, Nola, was a wine lover, and over the years, Serena had grown to love it too. "Ah!" Serena wobbled in her high heels, losing balance and stumbling forward. She squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the impact. But before she could fall, a warm hand caught her firmly at the small of her back, steadying her.She blinked her eyes open and found herself staring into Xavier’s dark, amused gaze. Her heart thumped. Quickly regaining her posture, she shoved him away and cleared her throat, her voice laced with embarrassment. “Seriously? You live here and still manage to bump into someone?”Xavier grinned, smug. “Excuse me? You’re the one who turned around and crashed into me. What was I supposed to do—vanish?”“I moved so you could open the door.”“My door’s never locked. You know that.”Serena scowled. “The last time I was here was years ago. Faint, breathy moans slipped through the closed door—each one like a dagger to Serena Knowles’s heart. The unmistakable rhythm of flesh against flesh followed, shameless and raw. She froze. The sounds weren’t just loud. They were intimate. Intimate in a way only a wife should know.Serena had just come from the hospital, her hands still trembling from the news. After months of fatigue, of late periods and quiet hope, she finally had confirmation—she was two months pregnant. Two fragile, miraculous months. The doctor had warned her to be careful. Her body bore the scars of three miscarriages. “No stress,” he had said gently. “No emotional trauma.”But Serena couldn't wait. Her heart had been bursting with joy. She needed to see Clint—her husband, the man she thought would be overjoyed to hear they were finally having the baby they’d dreamed of.That joy shattered the moment she stepped into his office and heard the woman’s voice, breathless and sickeningly sweet:“Clint, you’re amazing
When Serena opened her eyes again, she was greeted by a dreamy pink light. After a momentary blur, Serena's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly rubbed her eyes. This place...?! Was it... her home? Her bedroom?!How could this be?! Hadn’t she died from massive bleeding after the miscarriage?!But this pink canopy was exactly like the one on her princess bed from her memories!Turning her head, she glanced around. Serena suddenly sat up from the bed. "This... really is my room!" She scratched her head, even more confused. How could this be? After my father passed away over a year ago, Clint sold this property to someone else...When she first found out he was selling her father’s only property, she had rushed to his office to confront him.At that time, her father had already passed, and his attitude towards her had completely changed. The warmth from before was gone, replaced by coldness and impatience in his sharp, deep eyes. "I’m selling Bram Knowles’ house! And..." His thin lips c
At the mention of ‘Beckett,’ Serena's heart skipped a beat, and her face involuntarily darkened. "Just tell him I'm not here!"Darcy nodded obediently and was about to turn away when Serena stopped her. "Wait!"She pressed her lips together, stood up, and walked toward the landline in the living room. "I’ll take it. He went to the trouble of calling the house. What if... he has an urgent matter?"Avoidance isn't the answer! In her past life, that scumbag had used her, deceived her, and ruined her life. This time, she would keep her eyes wide open and see through his tricks!"Serena!" Just two steps out the door, her father's steady voice called out from behind.Serena froze, her heart swelling with emotion. "If you're upset, just come back home. Mom and Dad will always be your strongest support!"Her eyes seemed to fill with tears again..."I know, thank you, Dad!" Serena didn’t turn back, continuing to walk forward.Bram had never had a high opinion of Clint. He felt that Clint was t
Xavier gave a faint smile, showing a set of perfectly white teeth, "Where are you going? Let me give you a ride!""No need! I can take a taxi myself!"Xavier leaned out, looked around, then said, "At this time, it’s hard to get a cab. Don’t be stubborn, just get in the car!"After a moment’s thought, Serena decided not to argue with herself, reaching out to open the passenger door. She tried a few times, but the door didn’t budge. With her arms crossed, she sarcastically looked toward the back seat, "You told me to hitch a ride, but now you’ve locked the door. What’s the meaning of this?!""Come on!" Xavier patted the seat beside him, "The back is more comfortable!"Serena blinked, speechless. The Blaze and Knowles families had been close for generations. Bram and Xavier’s father, Henry Blaze, were childhood friends who had grown up playing in the mud and climbing trees together. Later, one entered politics and became the Mayor, while the other entered business and became the Chairman
Xavier seemed to take pleasure in the moment, casually glancing in Serena’s direction.Serena silently nodded at him. Despite the tinted windows between them, she felt like he could see her.Xavier smirked, turning back casually. "What’s wrong? Didn’t Clint love you so much he divorced his wife for you? Surely he wouldn’t mind covering a tiny scratch like this. Or..." he let the pause hang, "should we call the police?""...!"Poppy’s face went pale. She hesitated, then forced a smile."Mr. Blaze, this really isn’t a big deal. No need to trouble the police. How about I just write you an IOU?""An IOU?!" Xavier looked her up and down, his tone sarcastic. "If it were someone else, fine. But Poppy Castano, your reputation in the circle isn’t so great. I can’t accept your IOU.""You!" Just as Serena stepped out of the Beckett Corp building, her phone suddenly rang—its ringtone muffled, echoing somewhere in her bag. Her heart skipped. Could it be Clint? Maybe he’d changed his mind… maybe he wanted her to come back and finalize the divorce after all.She quickly fumbled through her bag, digging for her phone. But by the time she found it, the call had already ended. Missed it.Her screen lit up with a name—Xavier. The moment she saw it, her breath hitched. Those words he once told her came rushing back: “I’ll give you my life if you want it!”Her fingers tightened around the phone. Her pulse quickened. Should she call him back? Before she could decide, the phone lit up again.Xavier.Ringing.Serena took a deep breath, swiped to answer, and said sharply, “What do you want?”“Where are you?” came that fam
Mentioning Poppy made Clint’s eyes flicker. The anger on his face vanished in an instant, replaced by that cold, unreadable look Serena knew all too well.He strode to his desk, sat down, and casually picked up a document. On the surface, he looked focused — like he was deep into his work. But Serena could tell. He was using it as a shield. After a few moments of silence, she narrowed her eyes and reminded him, “I asked for the divorce papers. Did you hear me?”Without even looking up, he muttered, “There’s nothing here but business documents. I’m busy. We’ll talk at home.”Talk at home. Again.
Lunch was, once again, on Xavier. They’d treated themselves to a fancy meal at one of the swankiest hotels in Vernon.Afterward, Serena leaned back in her chair, rubbing her stomach and letting out a loud burp, completely unbothered by appearances.Across the table, Xavier just grinned, clearly amused.“I swear, the real Serena is finally back. The one I saw with Clint? That wasn’t you—she was way too humble, like she forgot who she was.” He reached across the table and offered his hand. “Welcome back, Serena Knowles.”Serena blinked, pushing down the emotions rising in her chest, and shook his hand. “Thanks. Let that humble version of me rot in hell.”
Serena’s sudden calm made Clint uneasy.Watching him press his lips together and stay silent, Poppy panicked.“Clint! Clint! What are you waiting for? She agreed—just sign the damn agreement already!”“I…” Clint clenched his fists at his sides, still not giving a straight answer.“Clint…” Poppy’s voice rose, her forehead creased with frustration.Seeing her so flustered, Serena couldn’t help the small surge of satisfaction that bubbled up inside her. She’d wanted to savor the moment a little longer, but after standing around in heels she hadn’t worn in ages, her f
