Chapter 1

001 | Marital Crisis

Aurora’s POV

I stared down at the pregnancy test. My heart pounded. Another ten seconds, nine, eight…

It was time. I swallowed hard, squeezed my eyes shut, and then–

I looked down. My hands shook where they held it. I tried to focus my gaze on the trembling test.

Two pink lines stared back at me. I gasped; a sob built in my throat. I clutched the pregnancy test to my chest, kicked my legs, and whispered to myself, “I’m going to have a baby!”

Tears streamed down my cheeks. I let them fall, gazing down lovingly at my flat stomach, cupping it with one hand and still clinging onto the test with the other. “I’m going to have a baby,” I breathed again, my eyes widening.

Finally.

After three years of marriage, Ethan and I were going to have a baby. I smiled as I cried, imagining my belly swelling with our child, imagining Ethan pressing his hands to my pregnant belly and singing sweet songs to our little one.

He’d always wanted to be a dad, just as much as I’d wanted to be a mum. But it wasn’t just the two of us that wanted this, that needed this; it was our whole pack. With every year that passed – heck, every month – the pressure from our wolves grew and grew.

We needed an heir to secure our positions as Alpha and Luna of the Silver Shade Pack. I’d always known we’d have one, despite the callous whispers I heard around the pack.

“She can’t conceive.”

“That’s what happens when you mate with an Omega.”

“There won’t ever be a baby – unless he cheats.”

“Of course he’ll cheat. What can an Omega give him, really?”

I dabbed at my tears and murmured, “We’ve proved them wrong, little one. You’ll prove to them that I’m worthy of being their Luna, and you’ll grow up as the strongest kid in this pack. Everything will work out now.”

As an Alpha, Ethan needed an heir to continue his legacy. As his Luna, I needed to provide him with one.

Nobody had ever expected him to fall in love with me.

Three years ago, just after my eighteenth birthday, I’d been working as a maid to put myself through college. I was stationed at banquets for big bosses and powerful Alphas – and it was at one such party that I’d met Ethan.

I hadn’t thought he’d even look at me, let alone acknowledge me as his mate. He was everything a girl like me dreamed of, with his dark hair, always artfully dishevelled, with his smirking, arrogant lips, and those eyes…

They were so brown they almost looked black – and they’d been fixed on me.

Not a week later, we’d become a couple. A month after that, he’d asked me to marry him.

And now we were going to be a family. “Ah!” I squealed, grinning to myself.

I couldn’t wait to tell him. I stood up from the bed, my legs wobbly, and crossed over to the window to call him. I looked outside, watching a crow come to land in the tree opposite my window, as the phone rang. My breath hitched on every missed beat. Come on, Ethan, I thought, answer…

The call didn’t connect. I pulled the phone away from my ear and frowned down at it, disappointment swelling in my chest. It wasn’t like him to not answer a call from me, even if he was busy.

‘I’m sure he’s just in a meeting,’ my wolf, Violet, said gently.

‘Yeah,’ I agreed, but something in my gut twisted. ‘I’m sure that’s it.’

Not wanting to think about it, I headed downstairs and started making dinner. My disappointment ebbed away, becoming excitement again as I scattered rose petals over the table and laid out candles. If I couldn’t call him, then I’d cook him a candlelit dinner and tell him in person instead.

‘Now that’s romantic,’ sighed Violet. ‘Him not answering is a good thing. Maybe it was even fate!’

I couldn’t quite shake my worry. On the rare occasions that Ethan couldn’t take my calls, he always rang me back as soon as he could. But dinner was ready, and the table was laid, and I still hadn’t heard from him.

I turned the stove down and left dinner warming on it. Something big must’ve come up at his meeting, I decided, and I flopped onto the couch and flicked the TV on.

My eyes fluttered closed. I tugged the blanket off the back of it and snuggled in, inhaling the warm aroma of spices coming from the kitchen.

Bang!

I jerked awake. “Ethan?” I called, sitting up and stretching.

I squinted into the darkness. The sun had been setting when I’d dozed off, so I hadn’t left any lights on. The curtains were still open; it was cloudy outside, the air thick with pressure. A storm was rolling in.

A figure shifted in the darkness. I jumped. “Ethan, is that you?”

The shadowed figure stepped towards me. My eyes still hadn’t adjusted to the darkness. My belly fluttered.

It wasn’t just me I had to protect now.

I gulped.

“Who’s there?” I asked, drawing the blanket off my legs slowly.

My eyes finally adjusted. I saw a hard jaw, a muscle bunching in it. I saw artfully tussled hair. I saw brown eyes, so dark they were almost black.

I frowned. “Ethan? What are you doing?”

At last he spoke – but his voice didn’t sound like his own. “What am I doing?” He laughed coldly. “What are you doing, Aurora?”

“What am I–”

He cut me off. “I never expected you to be such a despicable person,” he snarled. “I thought you were my mate, my partner, my Luna. I didn’t think you were capable of this.”

My eyebrows shot up. I tried to reach for his arm; he shook my hand off. “Capable of what? Ethan, I don’t understand. Talk to me.”

He scoffed. “There’s no point talking to a liar like you.”

“A liar?” I stumbled back, hurt. “What have I lied about?”

My head spun with a thousand possible explanations. Did he know about our baby? How could he? I’d only just found out myself!

I blinked back tears. I hadn’t lied about anything! “Ethan,” I said slowly, taking a deep breath, “tell me what I’ve lied about. I don’t understand.”

Ethan just shook his head. “There’s no point. You’ll only deny it.”

“No, let’s talk about this. I’m not a liar.” My tone slipped; I didn’t want to sound like I was begging, but I couldn’t help it. I was desperate. He never spoke to me like this. “Please, Eth. You know me.”

He backed away and picked something up. Without saying a word, he marched over to me and shoved it into my hands.

The writing on the paper trembled as my hands shook. It took me a moment to process what I was reading. When I did, I let out a cry.

“No,” I whimpered.

“I want a divorce,” he said flatly.

My world spun. Stood there in the dark, opposite him, not touching, the divorce agreement held between us, I couldn’t believe that this was really happening. It felt like a dream.

No – it felt like a nightmare.

“Why?” I eventually managed to rasp.

Ethan just shook his head again.

I dropped the papers and crossed my arms. “You can’t do this to me! You don’t get to decide this alone and not even tell me what I’ve done.”

He sneered at me. “I can and I will.”

“But I – I’m pregnant!” I blurted out.

A sob built in my throat. I pictured the candles on the table in the dining room, waiting to be lit. They never would be, now. I saw our dinner going cold on the stove, saw the plates being put away, unused, and I saw the evening I’d planned disappear into dust.

This wasn’t how I’d wanted to tell him about our baby. I’d never thought I’d be using our child as a bargaining chip, as a way to get him to stay. The back of my nose burned with tears I didn’t want to let fall in front of him.

His eyebrows arched up in surprise; the corner of his lips lifted. He replaced that tiny shred of emotion with an icy mask of disdain.

 “Get rid of it.”

My heart shattered. I opened and closed my mouth uselessly. He – he wanted me to… I couldn’t…

“You don’t deserve to bear my child.”

“But I… I’m your mate,” I whispered, clutching at my chest. The pain was physical. My blood pounded in my ears. White light flared across my vision.

“Not anymore.” His tone was clipped. “I, Ethan Savage, reject you, Aurora Everheart.”

The pain built and built, a tidal wave rising high above me – and then it crashed down, smashing me to pieces. My heart was torn from my chest and sliced apart. Bruised and battered, half of it removed, it struggled to beat.

I fell to my knees. The dull smack of them into the floor barely registered against the pain of his rejection.

Agony flowed through me like a river. Pain and sorrow joined hands to assault me, their claws like knives raking down my soul.

It was too much to bear.

I passed out.

002 | Meeting Selene
Aurora’s POV“Ethan?” I croaked, feeling around the bed for my husband. My hand hit wood – floorboards. I wasn’t in bed. Panic choked me. “Ethan!”I cried out for my husband, but he didn’t answer.Grey daylight streaked across the living room. I rolled over and covered my eyes with my hand. Why was I on the living room floor?Last night hit me all over again. I bolted upright, saw the scattered pages of the divorce agreement lying next to me, and burst into tears.“Ethan?” I called out, my voice shaky. “Ethan, please…”I grabbed the blanket off the couch and let myself cry, cradling my belly. I didn’t understand why he’d changed so suddenly, so drastically. Sure, he’d been a bit distant lately – but I’d thought it was just work stress, or the pressure of being an Alpha, or… something. Whatever it was, he’d never treated me like this before. Never.Ethan woke before me most mornings. He kissed my head, then slipped quietly out of our bed and came back with two steaming mugs of coffee.

003 | The Truth and Confrontation
Aurora’s POV I stared at the girl Ethan had been kissing. Everything faded into the background as I recognised my own features on her face. We had the same long, blonde hair, the same green eyes, the same full lips, the same freckles over our small, straight noses. We even had the same beauty mark! What was going on? Who was this girl? Violet whined. ‘I don’t like this.’ I stood, frozen to the spot, unable to do anything but watch as my lookalike steadied herself on Ethan’s muscular arm. Was Ethan seriously cheating on me? With a girl that looked so much like me? Zoe stormed up onto the stage, dragging me with her. With all the fury of a lioness, she shoved the DJ out of her way and snatched his microphone. “To the bitch that kissed someone else’s mate over there – The Midnight Club doesn’t welcome cheaters!” The music stopped. There was a beat of total silence – and then the whole club erupted with chatter. I felt numb to it all. Then I heard what they were saying. “Why i

004 | More Misunderstandings
Aurora’s POVI woke to the steady beeping of machines and the overwhelming smell of lemon and pine disinfectant. I wrinkled my nose.“You’re awake!” cried Zoe. I opened my eyes. She was sat on the edge of my starchy white hospital bed, her expression caught between worry and fury. Swallowing hard, I managed to rasp, “What happened?”Her jaw flexed. “I can’t believe I left you alone with Ethan.” At my frown, she took a deep breath and explained. “Raina and I brought you here. She’s a friend,” she added, with a wave of her hand. “We couldn’t get you to wake up, so…”“Thank you.” I squeezed her hand. “What about Ethan?”“What about him?”“Well – where is he? Is he here? Did he come with you…” I trailed off, seeing the answer in her eyes. Hesitantly, she said, “Selene got sick, too. Her health has always been bad.” My heart plummeted as I waited for her to go on.“He’s with her,” she muttered, shaking her head in disgust. “I’m sorry, Rory. He’s a dick.”It was like she’d ripped my hear

005 | Divorce and Runaway
Aurora’s POVSelene clung to Ethan’s arm like a limpet as they left. He steadied her as she wobbled; seeing that broke me all over again. Had she been right? Would he really choose her over me? His mate? His wife? His Luna? With clumsy fingers I picked up my phone. My hands shook as I waited for my parents to answer.Ring, ring, ring…We’d always had a good relationship – until now. Despite the struggles we’d faced and the poverty that had made them money-hungry once Ethan had entered our lives, I’d always thought they loved me.All of a sudden, it felt like their love for money had outrun their love for me. “Aurora? How are you?” asked my mum as soon as she picked up. “I’ve been better.” I took a deep breath. “Mum, have you spoken to Ethan lately?”She sighed. Nearby, I heard my dad’s gravelly huff. “Is this about the divorce? Ethan has already been more than generous.”Dad cut in, “Especially after what you’ve done.”I almost crushed the phone in my grip. “I haven’t done anything

006 | Encounter in the Airport
Aurora’s POVFive years laterSammy grinned toothily at me. My little son was the picture of innocence as he said, “What about Simon?”I sighed. “No.”We both looked through the glass wall of my office, out into the waiting area. Simon wiggled his fingers at me and stood up.I shook my head at him. With a huff, he sat back down. “He’s been out there for a long time,” said Sammy, his gaze drifting over to one of my would-be suitors. “He must really want to be my new daddy.”Laughing, I lifted Sammy onto my lap. “Yeah,” I teased along with him, “that must be it.”Five years ago, I’d run away from my life. I’d changed everything about myself to stay hidden after faking my own death. I wasn’t Aurora Everhart anymore; now I was Aria Black. It wasn’t just my outward persona that I’d changed. Along with switching out Aurora for Aria, I’d lost the naïve, trusting parts of myself. I’d had to do whatever I could to survive, cutting ties with family and friends alike just to get away from Ethan

007 | A Beautiful Stranger
Ethan’s POVThe drive from the airport to the Eternal Bonds Pack was a breath of fresh air, figuratively and literally. I rolled down the windows and let the crisp, autumnal air buffet me as I put my foot down. The tension in my shoulders had drifted away the second I’d waved goodbye to Selene and Serena, dropping away fully as I’d watched their plane take off. Goodbye, stress. Goodbye pretending and preening and primping. Hello… I didn’t know what I was about to walk into, actually. As much as I needed to be alone – so much so that I’d told my usual driver to take some time off while I was visiting Eternal Bonds, despite his stern frown at the thought of me driving myself around while I was there – it brought with it other complications. Not having my wife bleating at me meant that feelings I normally kept squashed rose, unbidden, to the surface.I loved Selene. At least, I thought I did.She was the only woman who’d ever shown me kindness. True kindness, anyway – not like the fake

008 | Reunited by Mistake
Aurora’s POVMy heart pounded as I hurried inside. When I’d seen Ethan’s car, I’d been worried I’d bump into him – but I hadn’t thought I would so soon, and so literally. I sat down heavily on the edge of the bed and let my head fall into my hands. I sucked in shuddering deep breaths, trying to calm myself down enough to think clearly.Because all I could do right now was panic. He’d recognised me. It was the only explanation for his behaviour. He’d looked into my eyes, my green eyes, eyes I should’ve bought contacts for. The rest of me looked different, but this was my mate, my ex-husband. We’d spent hours gazing into each other’s eyes. He knew mine better than anyone.Even in the shadows of the porch, his eyes looked exactly the same. All of him did, from his carefully dishevelled head of dark hair to his brown eyes, such a dark brown they almost looked black. He was maybe more muscular; his biceps had strained against his shirt. Why had I even noticed that? This man was evil incar

009 | Up All Night
Aurora’s POVHis knock was a death knoll. It made my knees shake. Panic consumed me.Should I hide? Should I run? I could go away again, change my name, dye my hair, get contacts this time–But he’d already seen me. He knew I was in here and, the longer I delayed, the more suspicious I’d become. Gritting my teeth, I edged my way over to the front door. His brow was tight with concern as he eyed me, and then the broken glass scattered across the floor. “Are you all right?” “Fine.” My voice came out all high-pitched and weird sounding. I coughed. “I’m fine. I’m sorry if I disturbed you.”“No, you didn’t.” He looked at me expectantly, but hell was more likely to freeze over than I was to invite him in. His shoulders sagged. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”“Well, I am.”He lingered. “The glass didn’t cut you, did it?”I shook my head.“What happened?” He toed his boot towards my foot, angling his body towards the open door behind me.I crossed my arms. “I tripped. 010 | Master of Deceit
Ethan’s POVFor the second time in less than eight hours, I found myself staring longingly at Doctor Aria as she walked away.I needed to pull myself together.I leant back against the front door, its maple-leaf wreath jabbing me in the back, and watched as she hurried towards the car park with her son. She slowed, glanced around, and, when she thought nobody could see, she dropped the coffee I’d bought her in the bin.But why? She had no reason to hate me, and yet it seemed like she did. Maybe she was in a relationship with someone, and saw my friendliness as unwanted advances. My chest pinched at the idea of her with another man, which was even crazier than the fact I’d got up before the dawn to get her a coffee. What was wrong with me?Sterling coughed out a laugh. ‘Where do I even start?’I groaned. ‘Not now. I need to think.’‘What, about how that beautiful woman wants nothing to do with you?’Pinching the bridge of my nose, I said, ‘Why wouldn’t she drink the coffee?’‘Why did y
