Chapter 1

The wolf girl

Charlotte POV

I gripped the leather of the concentration mitts tightly.

"Again," said my coach for the billionth time. He would give me a combination drill so often that I felt like my arms were about to give out. But it was OK with me. Being able to fight and defend yourself is better than being one of those wimpy chicks.

"Hyah!" I wept as I struck the last stroke in the pattern he had just demonstrated to me this morning. I had given the final blow all I had; therefore, I had momentarily learned my lesson.

"Charlotte, it stung like hell." Beneath the anger, there were grins as he yelled at me. Seeing the pride in his eyes pleased me.

I apologized to Jax. As I chuckled, a tiny giggle crept into my voice. Seeing how resilient I was was amazing.

"If you weren't so young, then I'd say there was no way you were actually a female," he replied with a smile this time.

"Jax, that was mean."

"You are aware that this is a praise." He chuckled at my whining, so it was either that or my pouty expression. "Most of the men in my gym are not as good fighters as you."

"It is not difficult to complete. The majority of them believe that size is a must for greatness, but this only means they have more targets to hit and less speed. Moreover, the majority of them are brainless, which hinders their ability to use those muscles efficiently. I also have an advantage that most of them don't have. I added my own ideas. It seemed to me like Jax had to virtually cling to the wall to stay upright.

"You're a clever and charming young person, which is why I admire you. You risk being late for your next lesson if you don't change straight away. I looked up and realized that he was right. I had to schedule my training sessions in between community college semesters because my prior teacher was no longer being paid by my grandfather.

"All right, Jax, I'll see you next week," I said to him before rushing to the empty, rarely used women's locker room.

I hurried through my shower as usual and placed my long brown hair in a high ponytail, letting its naturally curled curls air dry. I put on slacks and a jacket over my t-shirt. I suppose that most first-year college students, particularly the girls, took longer to get ready for class since I was rushed for time. Especially not right then, when I was slipping far behind.

Knowing that I could run a little bit faster than most people in these conditions gave me some relief. Perhaps not as quick as the pack or the rest of my family, but certainly faster than a human. I had to actively remind myself not to run too quickly as I rushed back to college.

Fortunately, I got to class early and enjoyed myself. However, being aware of when I was in danger or when someone was coming from my blind zone was helpful. We all appeared to have been given werewolf skills by the Moon Goddess. To be honest, though, I'm not even a werewolf.

After entering the room, the lecturer began working. I was really annoyed that this class was mandatory. I had not desired something that would challenge my thinking and stretch my intellectual boundaries, and they had just taught me the same things that my grandfather's tutors had taught me while I was growing up. My comparatively privileged childhood and schooling ended when I reached eighteen. While Grandfather still gave me some financial support, it was definitely far less than it had been when I was a kid already.

However, I didn't mind that. Now that I'm out here alone, I'm much happier. His strict standards no longer apply to me, at least not as much. I was relieved that the only rules I truly had to follow were those of the pack.

The Crimson Grove Pack hierarchy used to be quite high up, and this is my family, Charlotte Hayes. My grandpa was really the Alpha's beta, but after the Alpha was slain in an attack a few years ago, the Alpha's son took command. But even not being the Beta would prevent a significant occurrence from damaging my family's image.

The wolves are a proud people. My grandpa used to speak those words to me every day when I was a little child, as far back as I can recall. But that same pride had not stopped my fifteen-year-old mother from disappearing for a weekend and then coming back to face her father's fury. They then found out that she was expecting a kid, which made things worse. She refused to tell them who the father was. They naturally believed that the father was not a wolf, thus they saw me as an abomination.

In any case, I was still a pack member, and the former Alpha had instructed everyone to treat me normally until she was certain I wouldn't become one of the others. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen is when we usually change into our wolf forms.

Boys will be boys, and they will compete with whatever they can, even if that isn't always the case. It's commonly believed that your wolf will get stronger the earlier you shift. Even though I am almost nineteen, I am still the same person. All the other wolf traits were still there in me. I had all the talents I needed, including combat instinct, strength, speed, and increased senses. I thought I fit in with the gang. I was obviously not human, but I wasn't a werewolf yet, either. I just didn't belong anywhere.

I couldn't question my mother directly about my dad. Whether or not she was just too scared to speak to her father, she could not cope with the humiliation and contempt my family experienced throughout her pregnancy and the initial days following her delivery. Perhaps she is less scared now that so many years have gone by. When I was less than a month old, she finally committed suicide.

The only thing my mother had left was the necklace she had requested I have when I was an adult. I spent most of my time with my uncle Garrett and his wife Eve after my mother went away. Their two sons regarded me like a sister, which is one of my favorite memories of them. I'm so amazed that they followed through, even though they probably wouldn't have if Grandfather had his way.

To tell the truth, everything would have been perfect if Grandfather had not been here. I swear he despises me. He had ridiculously high expectations of me. I was always reassured by him that I would never make the same mistakes as his unfortunate daughter.

I had to endure his deeply embedded norms on a daily basis for years. My cousins and I were prohibited from attending public school, just like the other children in the pack. I was expected to be knowledgeable about many different topics. In addition to a very demanding curriculum, I also studied martial arts, ballet, boxing, fencing, etiquette, foreign languages, and musical instruments.

Grandfather paid for everything because he believed that I would change by the time I was eighteen and that he could use me to have me married into a respectable family or, at the very least, regain my position in the organization. But as my birthday drew nearer and nearer, it became evident to everybody that I would not change. I did not possess any wolves. I wasn't supposed to be among the other pack members; I was a freak of nature, an abomination.

However, I was still bound by all pack regulations. I still had to show up to every pack meeting. I still need the Alpha's instructions to bend my knees and drop my head. His remarks were obviously delivered to the pack, so we couldn't argue with him. And most of the rich families still treated me like an outsider in spite of all of that. That is, not intended to be one of the popular kids.

Dear Moon Goddess
Charlotte I could always tell when a lecture was about to end by the tone of Professor Thompson's voice, so I made myself get out of my daydream and concentrate long enough to finish the homework. Again, I would find the piece we had to create to be far too easy. Even though classes hadn't started for a little over a month, I was still bored. The only one of the four classes I was enrolled in that I thought was at all interesting was Intro to Criminology. I told myself again as I was leaving the room, "I hope this gets more exciting soon." "Hey Charlotte, I see you were spacing out again," a man's voice called out to me from behind. "Yes, Astro, is it really that hard for you to stay grounded for even one class?" Someone else answered. We four moved to the side of the hallway so as not to block anyone walking by. Willow sighed and slapped both of their arms. "Charlotte, ignore them," said Willow. In my entire life, I had never been able to make friends like

Mate rejection!
David POVI sat at my desk, listening to Evander, my personal assistant, report on his adventures. Because of his extreme efficiency, the reports were always longer than was strictly necessary. He could explain everything in less time, but who knew what the additional information would ultimately reveal? He reported on the autonomous, restless wolves that lived in the adjacent city. He told me that there was some discussion of an attempt to overthrow me and steal my people and land, and that the pack whose territory bordered ours, albeit they had far less acreage than us, was making quite a fuss. There were rumours about a renegade coven of warlocks and witches that used magic and had settled in our region. The elders and the record books say we haven't seen the likes of them in almost twenty years. Since Evander's grandfather had been my father's beta, I had thought about appointing him as my own because he was so meticulous and skilled at his work. However, his fam

The Visit from Grandfather
Charlotte POVUpon arriving home, I immediately observed that my Aunt Eve had prepared my favourite meal, Honey Garlic Pork Chops. Grandfather was present, which was the second thing I noticed. His car wasn't there, and the food overpowered his scent, so I didn't first notice him; otherwise, I would have scented him before I saw him. Regardless of the situation, Grandfather used them against me, using the fact that I didn't follow his scent as more evidence that I wasn't one of them. I'd like him to stop it right away because I already knew I wasn't a wolf. "I see you are the same as ever, Charlotte." I lied, a tiny bit of cynicism in my voice, "It's nice to see you too, Grandfather." "To what do I owe the pleasure of having you visit me today?" I said. He winced. Grandpa was aware that I was making an effort to be courteous to him. "I have come bearing warnings for the upcoming full moon gatherings. And I have prepared your attire for tomorrow's event." "That is very kind of you

The Assembly at Alpha's Residence
Charlotte POVI was ready for the dreadful event after Aunt eve had done primping and petting me and had dressed me in the dress that Grandfather had provided. It would be more convenient for me if Willow and the others were there to pick me up when they were heading there. We went to the northernmost road after leaving my house, which was situated in the higher part of the compound due to my family's status, or prior position. Despite having spent my whole childhood in the compound, I had never visited the Alpha's home. Unless the weather was extremely severe, everyone normally congregated at the clearing for significant meetings and activities, which is where I had met up with everyone. However, neither Willow nor I had ever visited the Alpha's home, based on our exchange. She said as we approached the Alpha House and saw the lengthy driveway leading up to it, "This is actually exciting." There was a small road at the back of the compound, although it was really a

Our mate is smelled by my wolf!
David's povI was already getting a headache from the evening. The main group, which had arrived by seven, was welcomed by me. There was still a steady stream of pack members coming up the path, so Evander told me I should have waited. "I growled and stalked off in the direction of the group I was supposed to be 'entertaining' for the night. If they couldn't be here by the time it started, that's on them." It would be ideal if I could meet them sooner and find out which of them was my partner. To be honest, I had already detected my partner's scent. Actually, this morning. What were the chances? I had been attempting to release some of the bottled-up resentment I was experiencing by running in the forest outside the compound. I was running in circles, not really seeing where I was going. And while I was making my way around the woodland, I noticed something new, though it was quite faint. Something that did not exist when I first began. I followed t

I'm Doomed, Oh Goddess!
Charlotte POVThat dangerously tempting aroma had grown stronger while I was sitting there on the fallen tree, trying to get away from the celebration. I had desired to leave it behind. I had intended to avoid contact with whoever it was as much as possible. And yet, here I was, facing him directly. The best I could hope for would be for him to pass by the place where I was. leaving me alone because he was too preoccupied with whatever he was looking for. All I could hope was that he would miss me. I said to myself in a whisper, "He probably doesn't notice my scent like I notice his." I could no longer ignore the aroma, which was growing stronger, when I noticed his silhouette in the distance. He was coming straight for me; he was not going to sidestep me. I hid as best I could by tucking myself under the tree. He was moving clumsily. It was as if he was blind. even wandering among the woods, he was moving more slowly than I would have thought possible. At that mom

She escaped once more!
David POVI stalked back into the home and headed to my office. I trudged along the hallways, trying not to shift. And I made a concerted effort not to ruin anything in the process. I only completed one of those tasks, and shifting was what I had not done when I walked two feet into my office. I can't even recall what I hurled, crashed, or flung carelessly through the hallways and rooms on my approach to my office. It made no difference. There was only so much I could do to contain my enraged wolf before he lost all control. I wanted to be alone, so I slammed the door behind me. Behind me, I could hear multiple sets of footsteps searching for the precise reason for tonight's events. I'd yelled at everyone to go and terminated the gathering early, but no one knew why. Nobody knew why I was so damned angry, and rightly so. If only they were aware of it. I growled to myself, "Doesn't she know what's happening?" and with more force than I meant, I threw my chair

I have a mate, let's meet with the Elders!
David POVIn my dream, I heard someone yell, "Alpha!" and it startled me awake. I became aware of the knocking at my door at that point. I heard my aide Evander calling to me from the other side of the door. "Alpha, it is time for you to rise, it is nearly noon." I glared at him as I climbed out of bed, "Fine." I quickly got dressed for the day and cleansed my face. Evander was waiting for me when I got up and left my room. He informed me, "You have already missed several appointments this morning." I complained, "It's Sunday." He told me in his stiff, rigid, and straight-laced voice, "You're a busy man, busy men never have a day off." I laughed and asked, "Is that why I have to see your ugly mug every day?" He grumbled and let go of his butler voice, saying, "Laugh it up David, but if I wasn't here half of your work would never get done." I snarled at him, "I never have you do my work for me." "I never said you did, but

FINDING MY MATE
David'S POV.“I didn't meet her, I just smelled her scent but then those malicious fools didn't let me get close enough to her before she ran away with her friends.” I said to them not to be impressed with them being so interested in my love life.“This is strange, don't you think? How can he have a scent and not get a glimpse?” Oswald asked, looking at me with doubt evident on his face.“It's possible, Uncle. You don't have to get too close to them before you can have their scent, I'm sure we all know that.” I couldn't convince these people at all, I'll just let them say what they want. “So what's the way out, how do you plan on finding your mate?? Do you want to lose her like that? Cadmus asked after clearing his throat.“Right now uncle I don't know what to say to this, it's my first time you know. Is there a way I can find her? I asked looking at them, I really wanted to find my mate not to retain the Alpha position but to have someone I can talk to that wasn't pressuring me to
