I held Sara as she cried, my own emotions were kept in check for her sake, my resolve solidifying with every tear she shed.

Minutes turned into what felt like hours, her sobs slowly quieting down, replaced by the soft sound of her breathing.

I continued to hold her, whispering soothing words, my hands never ceasing their gentle, comforting motions.

Eventually, the exhaustion of the day took over, and Sara’s eyelids grew heavy. Her breathing became slow and even, and she drifted into sleep, cradled in my embrace.

I remained still, staring out into the darkness beyond the windows of my study, my thoughts racing even as my heart beat steadily.

I looked down at Sara, her face peaceful in sleep despite the tear stains on her cheeks. I brushed a strand of hair away from her face, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
