By the time Hannah and I had found another parking space there was no time to drop my books off at my locker, so, they all ended up coming with me to our start of term assembly. We are late, but we manage to make it to the auditorium just in time for the beginning of our Principal, Mr Hales’ speech.
Principle Hales is an older werewolf, and let’s just say the years haven’t been kind to him. He doesn’t have any Expansion battle scars like most of the Were’s of his age in our pack. No, you can tell he hasn’t got a warrior’s bone in his body. He is a pure academic, dressed head to toe in neutral coloured tweed and corduroy, with a snooty face that has been weathered over the years by nothing more than insolent students. He scowls at us as we enter the hall, an ice-cold glare. So, we creep as quietly as we can up the bleachers and find some free space in the back to sit.
“Good morning, everyone,” Principle Hales begins, clasping his hands together. “I hope you have all had productive summers and are returning to this fine institution prepared and ready for another year full of insightful learning and self-improvement,” his harsh voice booms. “We have some fresh faces in school this year; I’m sure you will all join me in wishing them a warm welcome to United Lands High” he adds with a nod towards the front row somewhere.
There is a buzz of whispering amongst the students at this - everyone has heard the rumours about the Lycans joining school this year and the air is filled with trepidation. It is exciting of course, but there is a certain feeling of anxiety when one realises that we, the werewolves, are no longer the deadliest beings in this school… not by a long shot.
They are here, in this room, somewhere – I can feel it, I expect we can all feel it, even though they are more than likely suppressing their auras. Their presence demands respect, and the intimidating aura they give off is palpable when you’re in the same room as just one Lycan, never mind five.
The principal finishes his speech with talks of the improvements the school has made to facilities over the summer, changes to room numbers, additional funding for projects and such, and finally, a piece about how we are all one family and must treat each other with kindness and respect, always.
Yeah, right. Tell that to The Populars – the group of self-proclaimed most important and desirable wolves at this school, but really, they’re just the offspring of some of the truly important members of our pack. Bridget Marshall is the Beta Female’s daughter, Miarna Frances is the Gamma’s daughter, and Sienna and Callie Harrison are the pack hospital Consultant Physician’s twin daughters. Then you’ve got Darius Rivera, of course, our future Alpha; Mateo Diaz is the Beta Male’s youngest son, Darius best friend and future beta; Aldrick and Willhelm Frances, the Gamma’s sons, Miarna's younger brothers by just 10 months. The Frances twins and the Harrison twins are together, like, together together. I know right? What in the Hills Have Eyes is that all about?
And then finally, you’ve got Brandon Mayers. He is the top male warrior of our age and really is insanely strong considering he doesn’t have ranked blood - he came from the pack I was born in, Redwood Valley, but his mother submitted just like Hannah’s did, for the good of The Expansion. Helen Chan-Jones and Brandon’s mother are friends, and as far as The Populars go, he’s the only one with any decency, in my opinion.
The students around us start to pick up their belongings and head off to their first classes. My eye, however, is captured by the group of very tall and broad students at the front as they stand and talk to the principal. I consider them all for a moment, becoming increasingly amazed by each of their presences before realising that it’s them, the Lycans, and there are five of them.
I try to discern whether Silver-Blues is amongst them, but they all have their back to me, so I survey the backs of their bodies the best I can.
There are two girls and three boys, and they all seem to be very tall and athletic in appearance. The girls are a complete contrast of each other: one warm brown skinned with shoulder-length, dark, wavy hair; the other has light tan skin and off-white blonde hair that travels pin-straight down her back to sit in her waist.
The first boy is the shortest, but still somewhere around 6ft 4in, so not really short at all. He is fair skinned and has his strawberry blonde hair styled up in a man bun. The second has short, light, russet-brown hair, and I can see he has a tattoo creeping up his neck and small spacers in both ears. The third is the tallest, he must be at least 6ft 6in, and has darker, ashy-brown hair. Its shorter at the back and sides and longer on top.
“Is it them?” Hannah whispers to me, suddenly pulling me back to the present.
“Uh, I’m not sure. I need to see their faces,” I mutter back. “I remember one quite clearly, if I could just get a look…” I reply, my mind wandering to the memory of that day at the orphanage.
“Oh really? He must have been handsome, ey!” She says with a wink and a nudge of my arm.
I can’t help it; her suggestion makes me snort with laughter, and some of my books slip from my arms and go tumbling down the bleachers, loudly. The students that are left in the hall all stop and turn to look for the source of the echoing racket. I can feel my cheeks quickly turning pink as I hear some sniggers coming from remaining students as they watch my attempts to fumble around gathering the nearest books as quickly as possible. Hannah helps me, sharing the load of my books whilst I move to go and pick up the ones that fell down to the front.
I look down to the lower level to see my last two books are already in the large, calloused hands of someone else.
My eyes peel up his body: his white t-shirt clings tightly to his strong, muscular chest and the seams are strained against his substantial, flexed biceps as he holds up my books, inspecting them. His face is otherworldly; it is just the most beautifully crafted face I have ever laid eyes on. His bone structure – chiselled. His lips – plump. His eyes – silvery blue iris’ glinting and enveloped in dark, thick lashes.
Wait.
Just as I realise what, or who, I am looking at, his gaze lifts from my books to meet mine. Silver-Blues, meet Forest-Greens.
Moons. It’s him. It’s really him. Silver-Blues is here.
We stay like this for a moment, each just staring at the other transfixed. My mouth is slightly parted in shock and I feel it drying up with anxiety, and yet, I can’t pull my eyes away from his.
Shit. Crap. Pants. What do I do?
I am frozen to the spot. Moons I must look like an idiot.
After what seems like an eternity but almost surely isn’t, he smiles a crooked smile at me, revealing a perfect set of pearly whites with two slightly too long canines. I gasp quietly as a flock of butterflies erupts in my belly and the hairs of my body all stand on end, and as he opens his mouth to say something, I do something truly quite silly.
I panic, and I run.
I hear Hannah call after me as I run out of the main building aimlessly, dodging and barging my way through and around other students.
What on earth am I doing? I have no clue.
All I know is I have never had that feeling before. Even when I was with Samson last year, it was never really anything like that. As if the shock of actually seeing the very Lycan that has been invading my dreams sporadically for nearly half of my life wasn’t enough, he smiled at me, and it caused a feeling I’ve never truly had before. Those butterflies, the goose bumps.
I’m running away for now, but really, I hope I see him again soon.
“Gee whiz Nola, slow down!” Hannah shouts out behind me as she struggles to catch up. I slow down but only come to a complete stop when I’ve made it to the science block building. Doubled over and breathing hard, I turn around to see Hannah stop just behind me, looking at me like I have gone mad. “Nola… you know… that I’m all for a morning run…” she breathes out, “but… what the heck was that all about?” I straighten up and place both my hands on my head in anxiety. “It’s him Hannah!” She looks at me curiously, clearly needing more information than that. “I mean, uh, it’s them!” I sound panicked. She continues to eye me, her bewilderment evident on her face. I roll my eyes in exasperation. “It’s the Lycans, the same ones from the orphanage way back when. The ones that we spoke about yesterday, remember?” “Oh right, yeah… Okay.” Hannah doesn’t understand the relevance. "So then, why did we just make like Usain and bolt out of there?” she a
After biology class finished, I let Hannah know to go on ahead to next period without me – I’m going to finally head over to my locker and drop off some of these damn books before my arms fall off from exertion. I’m moving through the halls with speed, keen to not be late to any classes on my first day. As I round the final corner, I suddenly and unexpectedly hit a solid wall, and all my books spill from my hands once again. “OH FOR THE LOVE OF THE MOON!” I shout, having had just about enough and regretting my decision to bring them all in on the first day. It seemed like a good idea at the time, as bad ideas often do. "These damn books," I mutter as I crouch down to collect them once more. I hear a chuckle above me before a deep voice as smooth as velvet chimes in the sexiest Irish accent I’ve ever heard, “we really need to stop meeting like this.” I still for a moment, eyes wide, before I dare to look up at the huge form before me which is i
I feel their presence as soon as they walk through the cafeteria doors. The Lycans glide across the room to a large table near the back. All heads, including mine, turn in near unison as they walk by, eyes transfixed on the superior beings. I notice two things: firstly, our future Alpha, the tall, dark, and extremely handsome Darius Rivera, is eyeing the males up and down with a look of distain plastered across his face. I can only imagine that he is feeling slightly inadequate in their presence and that it is bruising his Alpha sized ego. Secondly, I notice the blonde female is walking side by side with Kallan. She laughs musically at something he says, latching on to his forearm whilst leaning her head on his thick bicep as they walk, stepping in harmony. I can’t lie, the image stings me a little, but of course they would be together; look at her. I’ve never seen anyone look as close to an angel on earth in all my life. She is fair but with a very light tan on her
“Hannah it was weird, seriously,” I tell my best friend on the drive to school the next day. “Those windows only open from the inside, and I had already locked up. It was like 10:30pm, no one else should be anywhere near the gym at that time.” “Could you have just forgotten to lock that one?” she asks. “No. Hannah, I locked them all, and besides, I felt something; it felt like I was being watched.” I try and explain again. She looks across at me, a flash of concern on her face vanishes as quickly as it came. “Well, what about Brandon Mayers? He works at the gym too, right? So doesn’t he have a key?” Hannah reasons. Brandon Mayers is the boy I share work shifts with at the gym. He is tall and ripped, of course. But like, seriously ripped; he has bigger boobs than I do. He has a mop of mahogany brown hair, light tanned skin, and deep brown eyes. He is a great fighter too and we spar sometimes if we’re at the gym together; his dad Edward is one of the ma
I stand there in the hallway for a moment dumbstruck, trying to analyse what just happened. Kallan talked to me, by choice, and he was nervous! In all my life I never thought I’d see a Lycan nervous. I know he didn’t strictly ask me to go to the party with him, that would have been absurd, I tell myself. But he did ask if I was going… and he seemed pleased when I said yes… A small flurry of butterflies quickly appears behind my navel. But then, just as quickly, I shake the thoughts from my head. Don’t get ahead of yourself Enola. You have a mate somewhere and when you meet him, you’ll forget all about that irresistible sexy Lycan. Hannah and I meet up at lunch and I’m itching to tell her about my latest encounter with Mr O’Dreamy, as she’s taken to calling him. She gets the table today whilst I queue up for food. The food here is okay, if you don’t mind everything you consume being beige and fried. Luckily with our fast metabolisms and traini
The next day, school was abuzz with talks of what happened at lunch the day before. Everyone wanted to know about the Lycan who would dare challenge our future Alpha. Of course, most are well aware that Lycans are exceptionally strong creatures, and Kallan is a particularly fine specimen at that, but it doesn’t stop murmurs and speculation of who would win in a fight. Despite him being a bit of a dick, our future Alpha is extremely popular at school, as you would expect. He’s the captain and quarterback of our football team and a track and field star, winning the school dozens of trophies and medals in the last few years. He’s also a great fighter and smart, as you would expect with his genealogy. Being devilishly handsome also helps, I think. The fact that none of the Lycans have turned up for school today has only added fuel to the student body’s speculation, and has sparked rumours that they have been banished from pack lands by Alpha Carlos. Darius has done nothi
I flinch at a soft hand on my shoulder. Peering up between the strands of hair that cover my face I see the most beautiful, kind amber eyes and raven hair in tight waves. She smiles at me gently, the bright gym light behind her casts a golden halo around her head.“Are you alright?” Lilith chimes.“Uh… I-, um, yeah,” I say, coughing between each word. “I… I’m fine. Thank you.”She doesn’t question me; she just smiles and offers me her hand. I rub my neck tenderly after getting to my feet.“I’m Lilith, we have History and Biology together,” she continues to smile sweetly.I nod gently, the back of my head and my throat hurting in equal measure. “Enola,” I smile back. “Thank you… for helping me,” my voice comes out horse. “But you shouldn’t have. He won’t like it.”My stomach drops as I realise that once again,
The Redwood Valley Pack lands were a quiet place, serene almost: beautiful forestry full of ancient redwoods to the west, central open planes of lush grass and wildflowers, and to the east an enormous salt lake that shimmered like a sapphire below a clear blue sky. It was truly idyllic. Contrary to what the humans make out in the movies, werewolves are inherently good. Alpha and Luna McGowen were strong Celtic warriors, but they ruled their pack with compassion. They never sought lands or power, simply peace. But where there is good, there must be evil, and peace is never everlasting. ********************************** It was a warm October evening, twenty years ago, and most of the Redwood Valley pack were gathered near the lake pier for a celebration of life. Alpha Patrick and Luna Fenella McGowen had had their first baby just two weeks ago; a beautiful baby girl with flaming red hair. They named her Fianna after a group of an

The blaring sound of my alarm rings out beside my ear and pulls me from sleep. I jump up quickly out of bed – there is no time for sleeping in today, and I don’t think I could even if I wanted too. My mind is buzzing thinking about what today might bring. Everyone is going to be talking about the Lycans, and I admit I’m pretty invested myself. I don’t usually care for gossip, but Mr Silver-Blue eyes is as much in my thoughts this morning as he was last night. It’s weird, I scold myself. I don’t even know him. He looked at me once when I was a kid and now, I'm falling asleep thinking about him? Get a grip of yourself, Enola. I tell myself it’s not like that. I do not fancy this guy, it’s just the same, normal level of curiosity that I’m sure everyone else in the school is feeling. It’s not every day you see a Lycan, let alone have five rock up at your school. I take a little longer getting ready for school than I usually might this morning, first day
