The blaring sound of my alarm rings out beside my ear and pulls me from sleep. I jump up quickly out of bed – there is no time for sleeping in today, and I don’t think I could even if I wanted too. My mind is buzzing thinking about what today might bring. Everyone is going to be talking about the Lycans, and I admit I’m pretty invested myself. I don’t usually care for gossip, but Mr Silver-Blue eyes is as much in my thoughts this morning as he was last night.
It’s weird, I scold myself. I don’t even know him. He looked at me once when I was a kid and now, I'm falling asleep thinking about him? Get a grip of yourself, Enola.
I tell myself it’s not like that. I do not fancy this guy, it’s just the same, normal level of curiosity that I’m sure everyone else in the school is feeling. It’s not every day you see a Lycan, let alone have five rock up at your school.
I take a little longer getting ready for school than I usually might this morning, first day back impressions matter! I put on a white tee with red long-sleeves, blue mom jeans fixed with a black belt and my red Chuck Taylors to finish. My hair doesn’t take too much maintenance, just a brush through and a little product to reform my loose curls, and I just put on some mascara to frame my eyes and fill in my eyebrows.
I take a step back and survey myself in the mirror. I do love how a mom jean accentuates my small, toned waist, but also fits the curves of my hips.
I grab my backpack and go through it one more time, making sure I haven’t forgotten anything I need.
“Okay so notebook, pencil case, pens, timetable, books… so many books…” I mumble as I stuff everything into my backpack.
I haul my backpack up on to my shoulder, groaning as I do so. I’m taking all my books in today to store them in my locker - I can be forgetful and was told off more than once last year for forgetting my class books.
A car beeps from outside; I look out of my window to see Hannah waiting for me in her old, slightly beat-up, black pick up. I smile down at her and mouth that I will be right down.
“Good morning angel face!” I say to her with a smile as I open the car door and climb in.
“Good morning to you too, someone’s chipper today,” she smiles back.
“Yeah, well, seize the day and all that,” I quip, and she laughs.
“You got everything? All your books?” Hannah asks, she knows me so well.
“Yes mum,” I reply sarcastically, patting my backpack which is nearly bursting at the seams. “All in here.”
“All of them?! Moons Enola, I’m amazed they all fitted,” she laughs back at me with wide eyes.
“Well, they don’t really. I’ll have to carry some when we get there or I think it'll rip apart,” I admit.
“Or you could just be more organised like me,” she smiles sweetly and a little bit smug, as she starts off driving, which earns her another eyeroll from me.

The journey to school is not long, only about 15 minutes in the car. It’s still on our pack lands, but our lands are so vast thanks to The Expansion, that it also has a small number of humans that attend. The humans at this school know about us, they’re mostly part of the pack; children of werewolves who don’t possess the gene.
We pull up into the campus carpark and see its already pretty full, so Hannah takes one of the last few spaces near the front. I get out of the car and stretch out my arms, taking in the view of the impressive glass front of the main building. It’s quite modern looking, our pack puts a lot of money into making this a great school. It has a huge sports hall, swimming pool, sports fields and courts, a gymnasium, humongous auditorium, drama halls and state-of-the-art science labs. All thanks to Alpha Rivera and The Expansion.
I reach into the car and take out some of my books from my backpack – I don’t think the stitching would have survived with them all in there much longer. Satisfied my backpack will now live to see another day, I throw it over my shoulder and hold the rest of my books to my chest with two arms.
*BEEEEEEEEEEEP*
Some idiot is holding down their car horn.
Hannah and I look across to see none other than Beta born campus bitch, Bridget Marshall and her gang of insufferable minions glaring at us from the seats of her shiny black BMW convertible.
“Hey, losers, move your damn car out of my space,” Bridget shouts, “NOW!”
Her clones all giggle in unison at their leader.
“Ugh, you better not be talking to me Bitchet,” Hannah starts, “I do not have the energy for you this morning. It’s the first day of school; can’t you try being nice for just five minutes?”
The giggling stops as Bridget opens her car door and steps one long tanned leg after the other out of her car. She’s tall anyway, but she towers over Hannah and I in the high heels she is wearing today. She clip-clops towards Hannah so I step up next to her protectively - you do not mess with one of us without the other having something to say about it.
The action is enough to make Bridget think twice about what she might do next. She slows her approach, perhaps remembering how her broken nose felt the last time she had picked a fight with me. She doesn’t back down though, she would never in front of her minions. Instead, she glares at me with her hazel eyes and turns to face just Hannah, flicking me with her long brown hair streaked with highlights as she does so. She talks directly to Hannah.
“Hannah. Unless you want people to think you’ve had another go at batting for the other team, then maybe you should reconsider your parking spot,” Bridget smirks. That bitch.
“For Moons sake, I am not bi Bridget,” Hannah says, rolling her eyes at the threat.
“Maybe not, but let’s think about who people may believe… Me, the most popular, pretty girl in school, destined to be the future Luna when Darius and I both turn twenty and become more than just boyfriend and girlfriend. Or you, tom-boy, biker boot wearing, pickup truck driving Hannah. People believed it in middle school, I’m sure they’ll do the same now,” Bridget threatens with all the venom she can muster. She fake gasps, “oh no! What will your future mate think of you?”
This bitch is evil now, but she never used to be - we were friends once. That was until Bridget started a rumour that Hannah was bisexual and had tried it on with her, purely out of jealousy I'm sure. It’s not true, not that it would matter at all if it were, but people believed Bridget and bullied Hannah relentlessly for it for a while. Hannah doesn’t need something like that happening again, especially when she’ll be turning twenty soon and will be able to find her mate.
Hannah’s clenches her jaw and gives Bridget her best dirty look before reluctantly turning to get back in her car. I can’t say anything. I don’t want to cause trouble for Hannah here, and we both know Bridget is evil enough to carry out her threat. All it would take is a little boredom and she would be looking for a new way to stir up trouble just to entertain herself.
“There’s a good girl,” Bridget smirks, earning her a laugh from her minions.
Anger builds inside me. “Fuck you, Bridget” I say before turning to get back into Hannah’s truck. I couldn’t help that one.
“What did you say to me, orphan?!” She spits out the last word with poison.
I feel my anger rise even further. I know her pointing out that I am an orphan shouldn’t bother me, but it does. “I said. Fuck. You. Bridget.”
She scoffs at me, looks me up and down with disgust on her face and knocks my books cascading out of my hands. “Whoops! You better pick those up orphan, I can’t imagine you could afford any more,” she sneers before getting back into her car laughing.
Everyone in the carpark is looking at us now and I can feel my cheeks glowing like embers. I curse her under my breath and gather my books before getting back into the car silently, not wanting to draw any more unnecessary attention to us on our first day back.
I'd just like to say "Hey!" to everyone reading this book. Firstly, thank you for choosing to read my baby. I work really hard on this work between my other commitments and it's so nice to see that someone besides myself is interested in it! If you have spent your coins on these chapters, thank you. It means so much. Id love to hear any feedback you have, good or bad, im interested in what my readers have to say. Take care of yourselves, All the best, BR x
By the time Hannah and I had found another parking space there was no time to drop my books off at my locker, so, they all ended up coming with me to our start of term assembly. We are late, but we manage to make it to the auditorium just in time for the beginning of our Principal, Mr Hales’ speech. Principle Hales is an older werewolf, and let’s just say the years haven’t been kind to him. He doesn’t have any Expansion battle scars like most of the Were’s of his age in our pack. No, you can tell he hasn’t got a warrior’s bone in his body. He is a pure academic, dressed head to toe in neutral coloured tweed and corduroy, with a snooty face that has been weathered over the years by nothing more than insolent students. He scowls at us as we enter the hall, an ice-cold glare. So, we creep as quietly as we can up the bleachers and find some free space in the back to sit. “Good morning, everyone,” Principle Hales begins, clasping his hands together. “I hope you have all h
“Gee whiz Nola, slow down!” Hannah shouts out behind me as she struggles to catch up. I slow down but only come to a complete stop when I’ve made it to the science block building. Doubled over and breathing hard, I turn around to see Hannah stop just behind me, looking at me like I have gone mad. “Nola… you know… that I’m all for a morning run…” she breathes out, “but… what the heck was that all about?” I straighten up and place both my hands on my head in anxiety. “It’s him Hannah!” She looks at me curiously, clearly needing more information than that. “I mean, uh, it’s them!” I sound panicked. She continues to eye me, her bewilderment evident on her face. I roll my eyes in exasperation. “It’s the Lycans, the same ones from the orphanage way back when. The ones that we spoke about yesterday, remember?” “Oh right, yeah… Okay.” Hannah doesn’t understand the relevance. "So then, why did we just make like Usain and bolt out of there?” she a
After biology class finished, I let Hannah know to go on ahead to next period without me – I’m going to finally head over to my locker and drop off some of these damn books before my arms fall off from exertion. I’m moving through the halls with speed, keen to not be late to any classes on my first day. As I round the final corner, I suddenly and unexpectedly hit a solid wall, and all my books spill from my hands once again. “OH FOR THE LOVE OF THE MOON!” I shout, having had just about enough and regretting my decision to bring them all in on the first day. It seemed like a good idea at the time, as bad ideas often do. "These damn books," I mutter as I crouch down to collect them once more. I hear a chuckle above me before a deep voice as smooth as velvet chimes in the sexiest Irish accent I’ve ever heard, “we really need to stop meeting like this.” I still for a moment, eyes wide, before I dare to look up at the huge form before me which is i
I feel their presence as soon as they walk through the cafeteria doors. The Lycans glide across the room to a large table near the back. All heads, including mine, turn in near unison as they walk by, eyes transfixed on the superior beings. I notice two things: firstly, our future Alpha, the tall, dark, and extremely handsome Darius Rivera, is eyeing the males up and down with a look of distain plastered across his face. I can only imagine that he is feeling slightly inadequate in their presence and that it is bruising his Alpha sized ego. Secondly, I notice the blonde female is walking side by side with Kallan. She laughs musically at something he says, latching on to his forearm whilst leaning her head on his thick bicep as they walk, stepping in harmony. I can’t lie, the image stings me a little, but of course they would be together; look at her. I’ve never seen anyone look as close to an angel on earth in all my life. She is fair but with a very light tan on her
“Hannah it was weird, seriously,” I tell my best friend on the drive to school the next day. “Those windows only open from the inside, and I had already locked up. It was like 10:30pm, no one else should be anywhere near the gym at that time.” “Could you have just forgotten to lock that one?” she asks. “No. Hannah, I locked them all, and besides, I felt something; it felt like I was being watched.” I try and explain again. She looks across at me, a flash of concern on her face vanishes as quickly as it came. “Well, what about Brandon Mayers? He works at the gym too, right? So doesn’t he have a key?” Hannah reasons. Brandon Mayers is the boy I share work shifts with at the gym. He is tall and ripped, of course. But like, seriously ripped; he has bigger boobs than I do. He has a mop of mahogany brown hair, light tanned skin, and deep brown eyes. He is a great fighter too and we spar sometimes if we’re at the gym together; his dad Edward is one of the ma
I stand there in the hallway for a moment dumbstruck, trying to analyse what just happened. Kallan talked to me, by choice, and he was nervous! In all my life I never thought I’d see a Lycan nervous. I know he didn’t strictly ask me to go to the party with him, that would have been absurd, I tell myself. But he did ask if I was going… and he seemed pleased when I said yes… A small flurry of butterflies quickly appears behind my navel. But then, just as quickly, I shake the thoughts from my head. Don’t get ahead of yourself Enola. You have a mate somewhere and when you meet him, you’ll forget all about that irresistible sexy Lycan. Hannah and I meet up at lunch and I’m itching to tell her about my latest encounter with Mr O’Dreamy, as she’s taken to calling him. She gets the table today whilst I queue up for food. The food here is okay, if you don’t mind everything you consume being beige and fried. Luckily with our fast metabolisms and traini
The next day, school was abuzz with talks of what happened at lunch the day before. Everyone wanted to know about the Lycan who would dare challenge our future Alpha. Of course, most are well aware that Lycans are exceptionally strong creatures, and Kallan is a particularly fine specimen at that, but it doesn’t stop murmurs and speculation of who would win in a fight. Despite him being a bit of a dick, our future Alpha is extremely popular at school, as you would expect. He’s the captain and quarterback of our football team and a track and field star, winning the school dozens of trophies and medals in the last few years. He’s also a great fighter and smart, as you would expect with his genealogy. Being devilishly handsome also helps, I think. The fact that none of the Lycans have turned up for school today has only added fuel to the student body’s speculation, and has sparked rumours that they have been banished from pack lands by Alpha Carlos. Darius has done nothi
I flinch at a soft hand on my shoulder. Peering up between the strands of hair that cover my face I see the most beautiful, kind amber eyes and raven hair in tight waves. She smiles at me gently, the bright gym light behind her casts a golden halo around her head.“Are you alright?” Lilith chimes.“Uh… I-, um, yeah,” I say, coughing between each word. “I… I’m fine. Thank you.”She doesn’t question me; she just smiles and offers me her hand. I rub my neck tenderly after getting to my feet.“I’m Lilith, we have History and Biology together,” she continues to smile sweetly.I nod gently, the back of my head and my throat hurting in equal measure. “Enola,” I smile back. “Thank you… for helping me,” my voice comes out horse. “But you shouldn’t have. He won’t like it.”My stomach drops as I realise that once again,
