The brown envelope made a smacking noise as it collided with the huge mahogany desk of Mr. Suarez, their Top Commander here in the Philippine headquarters. Aiden met the man’s eyes, his gaze burning with anger.
“What’s this?” Aiden quite literally spat out.
“Hello to you too, Mr. Williams,” the man replied sarcastically. Eyes never straying from Aiden’s.
He limped his way to the man’s desk.
“Have you recovered yet?
Aiden disregarded his questions and pointed at the brown envelope.
“Answer my question, Sir. What’s this?”
“It’s your mission,” he answered plainly.
“I know. But why her?”
“I want to know why. And who wants her dead?” dagdag na tanong niya.
Mr. Suarez leaned back on his swivel chair, observing him.
“You know that’s not how we work, Mr. Williams,” Mr. Suarez replied, gaze sharpening by a fraction.
“Accept and kill. No further information.”Nanlumo si Aiden sa kanyang narinig.
“But you know her role in my life. I even agreed to faking my death five years ago. And then this? Sir—”
“You also should know better than anyone that we do not associate our personal thoughts and feelings in our missions,” the man said firmly, full on glaring at him now.
“But—”
“But nothing Mr. Williams. You will do this mission or else.”
“Or else what? I’d die? Kung gano’n din lang naman ay mas maigi nang patayin ninyo ako,” Aiden replied firmly, determination in his voice. His hands are balled into fists on his side.
“Ah. I knew you won’t mind dying,” the man paused.
“But would you also not mind seeing your family die?”“What?” Aiden asked, bewildered at the sudden turn of events.
“You heard me. It’s either you do this mission or you lose your family.”
Natahimik si Aiden dahil sa kanyang narinig. Hindi siya makapaniwala.
“Though you don’t really have that much to lose now. Didn’t they already cut you off years ago?”
His nails are painfully digging on his palm. The man is looking at him straight in the eyes, lips upturned in an annoying smirk.
Mr. Suarez’s smirk turned into a full grin when Aiden begrudgingly reached to snatch the brown envelope back. He clenched his jaw hard to ignore the pain as he limped his way out of the office.
“Rest, Mr. Williams. You have a mission to accomplish,” pahabol nito bago tuluyang sumara ang pinto.
Aiden screamed loud once he was in the comfort of his car. It’s a special car given to agents doing missions.
He threw the envelope he’s holding to the passenger seat and banged his fist on the steering wheel a few times before sagging on his seat. He casted a glance at the envelope. He would often daydream about them meeting in a different scenario, maybe even in a different lifetime, just so they can continue their love again. But he stopped hoping, he stopped having these daydreams on his third year in Italy, knowing too well that it’s really hopeless. He lost hope.
He started the engine; he figures he’ll just go to his apartment. The real one assigned to him by the company. They sent him the info along with the car earlier.
His gaze remained on the envelope as he waited for the engine to heat up. He heaved a heavy sigh once again. His pants have a smudge of blood where his wound is. Lalo lamang siyang nainis.
He focused on his driving, grateful for the lack of traffic and the distraction although his mind is still running restlessly. He spotted a small grocery store. He was quick to pull over and park at the small parking lot beside it. He grabbed his phone and wallet before getting out of the car.
He sighed upon entering the small store, thankful for the air conditioner. He went to grab a shopping cart. They don’t work like that in Italy, and it’s been a while since he last did a mission here in the Philippines so he’s not quite sure if they still provide. He pushed the cart towards the first aisle. His phone rang as he was grabbing different biscuits. It’s Klyden.
“Yo,” he greeted as he placed a pack of biscuit in his cart.
“Bro, where the fuck are you? I came to visit you pero wala ka na raw dito? Nasaan ka?” Klyden fired questions after questions from the other line.
“I’m on my way to my apartment. Went to the company earlier,” he pushed his cart towards the next aisle using his left hand. The right busy holding his phone.
“You left already? Gago nasaksak ka lang kahapon!” Klayden exclaimed, a sound of a door closing can be heard in his background.
“I’m fine. I had to discuss something with the agency.”
“Wow, is this how it takes to be the best spy of our generation? No wonder,” Aiden laughed at the sarcasm in his friends voice.
“What did you discuss with them though? Was it about your mission?”“Yeah. I—”
Aiden froze on his tracks. He was about to get a bag of chips when he saw her. Standing at the end of the same aisle as him. He inhaled a sharp breath as he watched her grab something and placed it in her cart. She’s as pretty as ever, looks as delicate too. Memories-tinged sepia with nostalgia flooded his mind, shaking his core. God, he missed her.
“Bro? You still there?” Klyden’s voice broke him out of his reverie.
“I—yeah, I just—”
He stopped speaking mid-sentence again when their eyes met. Time seemed to stop. He can hear Klyden’s voice from the other line but he can’t pay attention to it. He doesn’t know what to do. He doesn’t know what to feel either. All he knows is he wants to approach her, maybe even hug her. Tell her the words that’s been brewing in his tongue for so long. Whisper it in her ear even.
Long time no see, Artemis.
Aiden was quick to school the expression of shock on his face into a blank one.“Hey, you still there?” tanong ni Klyden mula sa kabilang linya. Aiden averted his gaze from Artemis. He fixed his hold on his phone. He can feel his hands shaking for some reason. Is he nervous? Embarrassed? Flustered? Guilty? As he pushed his cart past her, their eyes met once again. She looks so confused. He willed himself to keep it cool. Aiden gave her a small smile, her eyes widened for a fraction before giving a small smile too, immediately averting her gaze after. He reached the next aisle still feeling dazed. Her dark brown hair, she used to have it long, no
His eyes burned holes at the envelope on top of his work desk. He sighed for the nth time in the past hour, mabilis siyang kumurap nang maramdaman ang panunuyo ng kanyang mata. He raised his hands to rub his eyes, groaning as he did so. This has been his routine for almost a week now. As if staring at the envelope would suddenly answer his questions. He really wants to know why, ano ba ang ginawa ni Artemis sa mga nagdaang taon upang masama sa ganitong business ang kanyang pangalan. Artemis, despite being a really sweet girl is firm and opinionated. Alam niyang ipaglaban ang sarili niya. Did she accidentally anger someone with her opinionated nature again? He suddenly remembers that one time they had a date and intended to watch a movie but ended up in the mall security office. - Aiden reached out to put his hands on Artemis’ tense shoulders.
The third time they met, believe it or not, was purely on accident. Apat na araw na ang nakakaraan mula nang magkita sila sa hospital, pinadalhan siyang muli ng kanyang agency ng lokasyon, as expected, but after hours of waiting, she didn’t show up. He went home feeling a mixture of disappointment and relief that day. Disappointed that it delayed the progress of his mission, at the same time relieved for the same reason. He was jogging around the small village, a habit he formed every time he’s injured so he would heal faster, when he accidentally saw her walking out of her house. They were both shocked at the sight of each other.“Oh,” ani nito.“Ikaw ulit.”Huminto siya sa labas ng bahay nito, eyes focused on her.“I didn’t know you live here,” he said. That’s partly a lie, he kind of deduced she lived somewhere near the area if his a
He stood behind the cash register, preparing for the rush hour. He is yet to make a move, kailangan niya munang masiguro na hindi magiging kahina-hinala ang bawa’t galaw niya.Artemis is currently cleaning tables; it seems to be her duty around the café. He tracked her every move, eyes following every movement.“Magkakilala po kayo?” he heard Evelyn ask, it’s the first time she directly talked to him since his first duty. Bahagya niya lamang itong nilingon. She’s a petite girl, pretty eyes hidden behind big glasses, small nose and thin lips. Her head is the same level as his shoulders, kaya naman kinailangan niya pang yumuko nang bahagya.&nb
He works quietly, was trained for even the most extreme of extreme situations. The next time he opened his eyes, he saw the white ceiling and his first thought was the agency, and he immediately closed them again. He internally groaned. His senses slowly came back, with a massive throbbing at the back of his head at that. He’s hearing hushed whispers from somewhere in the room, at kahit na alam niyang mahina ang kanilang boses, nakadagdag pa rin ito sa sakit ng kaniyang ulo. He groaned loudly this time.
To say that things were awkward in the café would be an understatement. He doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry because of this. Nararamdaman niya ang ingat nila. Even while ordering food for their lunch. It’s another lazy afternoon in the café. Artemis is once again busy at the back, probably talking to their manager, while Evelyn is walking around to clean table.Ang mga mata niya ay nanatili rito. The information he asked still hasn’t come, kaya naman pansamantalang nag-iingat muna siya sa paligid nito. He doesn’t know her well afte
“I forgot my wrist band,” Artemis muttered from beside him in the counter. What does she wear it for?“What?” she asked nang makitang nakatingin siya rito. Ever since that night, at the night market, it’s as if a switch had been flipped and suddenly, they’re closer. She now approaches him more often, starts conversations too.
He should’ve known. No, really. Aiden should have known. He took it as they accepted his request, so there he relaxed. He continued his job at the café though, because although he doesn’t really need it, nag-eenjoy siya rito. Isa pa ay isa itong malaking excuse upang makasama si Artemis, especially now that the weight of his mission is lifted off of his shoulders. They’re both standing behind the counter again. “Hmm? She stared at him for a moment, before mirroring the smile he has on his face. Everything was going so peaceful.
