The first thing he registered when he finally came to his senses was the sterile scent in the room. And he immediately wanted to groan. Fuck. The second thing was when he opened his eyes and saw the familiar white walls. Too white for his liking. He has never felt the biggest urge to run away since.
He is not in a hospital, he knows. Well, it is a hospital, but not a typical one. It's more of a clinic. Ang agency mismo ang nagmamay-ari nito. It's for emergency situations like this.
He forced his eyes to open, getting blinded by the too bright light above him. His eyes slowly gained focus and his eyes met the face of his best friend. He had never groaned so loud in his life.
Napapikit siya nang marinig ang tawa nito.
"Fuck off, Klyden," he croaked. His throat feels so dry at mas lalo lamang lumakas ang tawa ng kaniyang kaibigan.
"Ah this is gold," Klyden said while still laughing.
"We didn't see each other for five years and this is how you come back?"Pinanatili lamang ni Aiden na nakasarado ang kanyang mata.
Klyden was looking at him, mirth swimming in his eyes.
"What happened to you?" Klyden asked him.
"They didn't tell you?"
"So, you really almost got kidnapped?" he asked bago muling tumawa nang malakas.
"Klyden," Aiden groaned exasperatedly. Klyden raised his index finger at him, gesturing for a minute as he laughs.
"I can't believe the best spy of our generation almost got kidnapped. You didn't go through that suicide mission five years ago just do die like that, bro" Klyden said habang nagpupunas ng luha. Napaiayak pa nga sa katatawa ang gago.
Aiden rolled his eyes and moved to seat up, agad naman siyang tinulungan ni Klyden.
"Ah this is pick comedy."
The door suddenly opened. A tall man in a black suit entered. He closed the door after walking inside.
"Good to see you awake, Mr. Williams," the man said, voice awfully deep.
"The agency expects you to report what happened as soon as you can."Binigyan niya lamang ito ng isang tipid na tango. The man's hand raised.
"I have here the mission especially given to you," naglakad ito palapit upang maiabot ang envelope na agad naman niyang tinanggap.
Aiden Clifford Williams- AC, it read. He feels strange seeing his name like that.
He placed the envelope on his lap and paid attention to the man.
"You are not to disclose any information regarding this mission with anyone," the man stated, reminding him of the most important rule of the agency. He nodded at him.
"That's all I came here for. Good luck on the mission and get well soon, Mr. Williams."The man was gone soon after.
"Aren't you going to open that," Klyden asked reaching for the envelope na agad niya namang inilayo.
"Rule number 1 stupid," he said. He's breathless just by the small action.
"What? You're going to let a rule break us apart? Me? Your best friend?" Klyden said dramatically making him crack up.
"Hindi ako nagpapatawa, buksan mo na 'yan," Klyden said in a joking tone, isang maliit na ngiti ang naglalaro sa kanyang labi.
"You're so stupid."
"I'm just fulfilling my role as your best friend."
Ang kwarto ay natahimik. Aiden is busy looking staring at the envelope while Klyden played on his phone.
"Nga pala," his best friend started, shattering the silence.
"Who even did that to you? They told me what happened pero wala naman silang nabanggit kung sino ang gumawa.""That's because I haven't told them," he replied.
"So sino nga?"
Aiden sighed.
"It was the guy from my mission five years ago."
Silence fell in the room, then...
"What the fuck?"
"Saw the tattoo on his nape, man."
"The bow?", he nodded.
Well, damn. They knew you were coming back?"'Yan din ang tanong na pumasok sa kanyang isipan. Paano nila nalaman na babalik siya? Maaring hindi ito nakapagtataka dahil spy sila, maraming mata ang nagmamatayg sa kanila. Ngunit, bakit? Bakit kinailngan pa nilang balikan siyang muli? Limang taon na ang lumipas.
"I don't know, man" he replied, shaking his head.
"Damn. Kababalik mo lang, may kaaway ka na agad."
Klyden's phone suddenly rang and he cursed when he saw the caller ID. Aiden raised an eyebrow at him.
"It's my partner," he said, answering the silent question.
"Oh, why aren't you answering it?"
"She's annoying," Klyden all but groaned.
"She? Bago?"
"Yup."
The phone stopped ringing and Klyden sighed in relief. Ngunit maya-maya lamang ay tumunog ulit ito.
Klyden let out a litany of curses bago tumayo.
"I'll go ahead, bro. hindi namna titigil ito," Aiden just nodded at him.
"I'll see you later."Binalot ng katahimikan ang maliit na kwarto pagkaalis ni Klyden. He welcomed the silence, the humming of the air conditioner doing wonders so the silence wasn't too loud in his ears.
He stared at the envelope, contemplating whether he should open it now or what.
The regret was immediate. His body stiffened; eyes widened a fraction. His breath even got caught in his throat. He has never felt like this in so long. He doesn't feel like this even in missions. Tila siya binuhusan ng isang baldeng tubig.
He exhaled slowly, an attempt to calm himself down. Ilang ulit niyang sinubukang pumikit, each time hoping that the name and picture he is seeing in front of him s just a mistake. He inhaled a shaky breath. This can't be.
Ilang beses pa muli siyang huminga nang malalim upang maikalma ang sarili ngunit nagmamadali niya pa ring binusisi ang iba pang papel. He's desperately looking for more information. Why? Bakit? Ano ang ibig sabihin nito?
"Fuck, fuck, fuck!" he screamed in confusion.
He grabbed his hair, pulling hard. His scalp hurts from the action but the pain feels so grounding at the moment. Bakit?
His eyes stopped on the picture in front of him. Hindi maaari ito. The person in the picture is smiling so wide. It's a pretty smile. One he once loved looking at. He can honestly say the same even now. God. He badly wants to know why.
His eyes trailed on the only information printed below her picture. Her age, 27. Aiden wants to cry. He was never a believer of God, but right at this moment, he wants to beg and pray to him.
Please tell me this isn't real.
He rummaged on the paper some more but he knows it's futile. The agency never told them why a target needs to be eliminated. They do not work like that. The only thing they need to know is the target's age and face. Nothing more. He hates that rule more than ever right at this moment. Because why? Fucking why?!
He stared at her innocent face. What did she do? She's such a sweet girl. The ever too kind and selfless being he has ever met? Why did her picture ended up being here? Aside from that, nais niya ring malaman kung sino.
He can feel his eyes well up with tears. Many years-worth of memories he had long since buried for the last five years came crushing down on him.
Her name is written in bold letters, the words "shoot to kill" written beside it. His heart cracked at every letter; he wants to scream in anger. His voice sounded so vulnerable as he read her name aloud, it came out in a broken whisper.
"Henzel Artemis Flores."
The brown envelope made a smacking noise as it collided with the huge mahogany desk of Mr. Suarez, their Top Commander here in the Philippine headquarters. Aiden met the man’s eyes, his gaze burning with anger.“What’s this?” Aiden quite literally spat out. Ang tingin ni Mr. Suarez ay nanatiling kalmado, ang kaliwang kilay niya ay bahagyang tumaas.“Hello to you too, Mr. Williams,” the man replied sarcastically. Eyes never straying from Aiden’s.Huminga nang malalim si Aiden upang maikalma ang sarili, pinapaalalahanan na superior niya pa rin ang kanyang kaharap. He limped his way to the man’s desk.“Have you recovered yet? Hindi ba’t kahapon ka lamang nasaksak?” tanong nito habang ang mata ay nakatingin sa kanyang kanang hita na may balot na benda sa ilalim ng kanyang suot na jogging pants.Aiden disregarded his ques
Aiden was quick to school the expression of shock on his face into a blank one.“Hey, you still there?” tanong ni Klyden mula sa kabilang linya. Aiden averted his gaze from Artemis. He fixed his hold on his phone. He can feel his hands shaking for some reason. Is he nervous? Embarrassed? Flustered? Guilty? As he pushed his cart past her, their eyes met once again. She looks so confused. He willed himself to keep it cool. Aiden gave her a small smile, her eyes widened for a fraction before giving a small smile too, immediately averting her gaze after. He reached the next aisle still feeling dazed. Her dark brown hair, she used to have it long, no
His eyes burned holes at the envelope on top of his work desk. He sighed for the nth time in the past hour, mabilis siyang kumurap nang maramdaman ang panunuyo ng kanyang mata. He raised his hands to rub his eyes, groaning as he did so. This has been his routine for almost a week now. As if staring at the envelope would suddenly answer his questions. He really wants to know why, ano ba ang ginawa ni Artemis sa mga nagdaang taon upang masama sa ganitong business ang kanyang pangalan. Artemis, despite being a really sweet girl is firm and opinionated. Alam niyang ipaglaban ang sarili niya. Did she accidentally anger someone with her opinionated nature again? He suddenly remembers that one time they had a date and intended to watch a movie but ended up in the mall security office. - Aiden reached out to put his hands on Artemis’ tense shoulders.
The third time they met, believe it or not, was purely on accident. Apat na araw na ang nakakaraan mula nang magkita sila sa hospital, pinadalhan siyang muli ng kanyang agency ng lokasyon, as expected, but after hours of waiting, she didn’t show up. He went home feeling a mixture of disappointment and relief that day. Disappointed that it delayed the progress of his mission, at the same time relieved for the same reason. He was jogging around the small village, a habit he formed every time he’s injured so he would heal faster, when he accidentally saw her walking out of her house. They were both shocked at the sight of each other.“Oh,” ani nito.“Ikaw ulit.”Huminto siya sa labas ng bahay nito, eyes focused on her.“I didn’t know you live here,” he said. That’s partly a lie, he kind of deduced she lived somewhere near the area if his a
He stood behind the cash register, preparing for the rush hour. He is yet to make a move, kailangan niya munang masiguro na hindi magiging kahina-hinala ang bawa’t galaw niya.Artemis is currently cleaning tables; it seems to be her duty around the café. He tracked her every move, eyes following every movement.“Magkakilala po kayo?” he heard Evelyn ask, it’s the first time she directly talked to him since his first duty. Bahagya niya lamang itong nilingon. She’s a petite girl, pretty eyes hidden behind big glasses, small nose and thin lips. Her head is the same level as his shoulders, kaya naman kinailangan niya pang yumuko nang bahagya.&nb
He works quietly, was trained for even the most extreme of extreme situations. The next time he opened his eyes, he saw the white ceiling and his first thought was the agency, and he immediately closed them again. He internally groaned. His senses slowly came back, with a massive throbbing at the back of his head at that. He’s hearing hushed whispers from somewhere in the room, at kahit na alam niyang mahina ang kanilang boses, nakadagdag pa rin ito sa sakit ng kaniyang ulo. He groaned loudly this time.
To say that things were awkward in the café would be an understatement. He doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry because of this. Nararamdaman niya ang ingat nila. Even while ordering food for their lunch. It’s another lazy afternoon in the café. Artemis is once again busy at the back, probably talking to their manager, while Evelyn is walking around to clean table.Ang mga mata niya ay nanatili rito. The information he asked still hasn’t come, kaya naman pansamantalang nag-iingat muna siya sa paligid nito. He doesn’t know her well afte
“I forgot my wrist band,” Artemis muttered from beside him in the counter. What does she wear it for?“What?” she asked nang makitang nakatingin siya rito. Ever since that night, at the night market, it’s as if a switch had been flipped and suddenly, they’re closer. She now approaches him more often, starts conversations too.
