Ari’s POV

I stood there frozen, shock gripping every part of me as I heard Cross mention some other girl's name.

I peeled my eyes off of them and stared directly at the ground as a million questions ran through my head. One standing out and echoing off the walls of my mind.

Why?

Why would Cross leave me? Why would he disappear for so long without even saying anything or reaching out to me?

Why did Cross feel the need to vanish into thin air and not say anything? After everything we've been through?

Why the fuck is Cross having sex with someone else?

I looked back at them, taking in the sight again, seeing Cross' erect cock disappearing into the girl he was fucking over and over again. His hands moving up to cup and squeeze her breasts.

I felt tears pricking at the side of my eyes but I held it, long enough to regret the decision I made to find Cross.

In the next moment, I ran out, evading every security and their checkpoint as I made my way out of his house.

Ari’s POVI felt hollow. The weight of what had happened last night — Jonathan on top of me, the way I had mistaken him for Cross, the disgust that curdled in my stomach — it all made me want to crawl into a hole and never come out.But life didn’t give me that luxury. At first, I didn’t even think much about where Jonathan could have stomped out to. For me, he could die for all I cared. I refused to just have him play with me whichever way he wished. Yes, there was a time I really loved him more than anything else. But now, I was not sure it meant anything. I just wanted him out of my life.I needed a distraction.I had work. And even though my heart was in tatters and my mind a chaotic storm, I forced myself up, showered, dressed, and dragged my empty shell of a body to the precinct. It was a mistake. The second I walked through the doors, I knew something was wrong. The air was thick with hostility.Everyone stared at me — not with curiosity or concern — but with unmistakable hatre

Ari’s POVI didn’t answer. He clicked his tongue. “This is what happens when you don’t listen to me, Ari.”I felt a tear slip down my cheek.Jonathan grinned wider.“Don’t worry, baby. I’ll get you out of this… eventually. But I think you’ll need to be a little more… grateful next time.”I closed my eyes, willing myself not to scream.I was trapped. And for the first time… I wasn’t sure how I was going to survive this. I sat in the cold metal chair, wrists cuffed to the table. She didn’t sit right away. Instead, she paced slowly around the room, like a lion circling wo

Cross’ POV Something was wrong. I could feel it in my gut, in the way Ari wouldn't look me straight in the eye. I stepped closer, my pulse hammering as I searched her face. “Ari, why did you call me here?” She blinked rapidly, shaking her head. “I… I just needed to talk.” “Talk?” My voice was low, edged with suspicion. “Yeah,” she whispered, her voice barely carrying over the cold emptiness of the warehouse. My fists clenched at my sides. “Bullshit.” She flinched. “Cross—” “No.” I cut her off, stepping even closer. “You’ve been avoiding me like the plague, and now suddenly, you need to talk? You’re lying, Ari.” My mind was already racing, my eyes instantly scanned the area. There was nothing… yet!She looked away, biting her lower lip. “What’s going on?” I pushed. “Why am I here?” She exhaled sharply, crossing her arms. “You think I don’t have a reason to be mad at you?” I frowned. “That’s not what I said.” She scoffed. “You think just showing

Cross’ POVPain. It was the first thing I registered as I slowly regained consciousness. My body ached, my head was throbbing, and something warm and sticky trickled down my forehead. Blood. Shit.I forced my eyes open, the blaring red and blue lights in the distance reminding me exactly where I was—on the run. The crash hadn’t killed me, but if I didn’t move now, I’d be done for. Sirens wailed, closing in fast. The police were coming. I could hear the faint voices of officers barking orders, their footsteps crunching against the debris. Move, Cross. Move! Gritting my teeth, I yanked my seatbelt free and shoved the mangled car door open. Every muscle in my body screamed as I dragged myself out, my leg nearly buckling beneath me. The impact had messed me up, but I wasn’t dying here—not tonight. I stumbled forward, barely able to steady myself. My vision blurred, but I forced my feet to move. A few yards ahead, I spotted a canal, its murky waters barely visible under the dim city

Ari’s POV"I’m sorry." That was the last thing I had said to Cross before everything went to hell. And I meant it. I didn’t know why I said it, maybe because I knew he didn’t deserve what was coming next. Maybe because I felt like I had just done something unforgivable. Maybe because, despite everything, I still loved him. But then—gunfire. Chaos erupted. I ducked behind a crate as bullets ripped through the air, my ears ringing. My heart pounded so hard I thought it might burst. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. The police were in position. Cross was supposed to be arrested. That was the plan. But then another group had shown up. Who the hell were they? I peeked out just in time to see Cross sprint toward his car, dodging bullets with the kind of precision that came from years of experience. He was fast, but so were the officers. Run, Cross…The thought hit me before I could stop it. And then I was running too. I didn’t know what I was doing. I didn’t even know why

Ari’s POVThe morning was quiet, but my thoughts were anything but the same. I had barely slept after spending the night with Kaelie, and even as I walked into the station, all I could think about was Cross. Where was he being kept? Had they hurt him? Was he— No. I shut down the thought before it could spiral any further. Cross wasn’t weak. He wasn’t the type to break, no matter how much they tried to beat him down. But something about Lady Smith made me uneasy. And that uneasiness only grew stronger when I saw her walking straight toward me. "Ariana." Her voice was firm, but I could hear something laced underneath it. Amusement? Suspicion? I stopped in my tracks, standing straighter. "Yes, ma’am?" She didn’t waste time. "Cross is asking to speak with you." My stomach dropped. I forced my face to remain neutral. "Me?" She gave me a sharp nod. "Yes, you. He won’t speak to anyone else." I swallowed. "I… I don’t know why he would ask for me." Lady Smith’s eyes studied me li

A body was found. Retrieved. Everything had burned to crisp. But it was true.It was him.Cross Margiello.Deceased.The news had already spread through the precinct, and even though no one dared to say it out loud, I could feel the looks. The silent whispers. The pity. I hated it. I hated that I had let myself believe, even for a second, that Cross could have made it out alive.Because he didn’t.And now, all I had left was this crushing emptiness. Ari’s POVFirst, Cross.Betrayal, and still, he could not leave my mind. But I had left him.I had walked away, leaving him behind, knowing this was the last time I would see him. And yet, my hands had shaken as I turned the doorknob, my heart twisting painfully in my chest as I forced myself not to look back. Because if I did, if I saw the way Cross was looking at me—pleading, desperate, raw—I would break.I had already broken. But this was how it had to be. I kept telling myself that. Over and over. There was never a version of this story where Cross and I had a happy ending. This was always where it was going to end.I wiped my face roughly, steeling myself. She didn’t even flinch when I stepped into the room this time.I walked over lazily, stopping just in front of her chair. “You’re quieter than usual.”She lifted her head weakly. “What’s the point?”I smirked, tilting my head. “Giving up already?”Kaelie swallowed hard, her voice hoarse. “Are they coming for me?”I crouched down, watching her carefully. “Oh, sweetheart.” I reached out, running a finger under her chin before she jerked her head away. “They’re on their way.”Her bottom lip trembled, but she clenched her jaw to keep it from showing.I sighed, shaking my head. “You’re lucky, you know. You get to be part of something big. This isn’t just about you, or me, or even Ari. This is about power.”Kaelie scoffed. “You’re insane.”I grinned. “And you’re boring me.”I stood up, stepping back toward the door. “Don’t worry. Your best friend w

My fists balled at my sides; my knuckles white from the pressure. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.I had been seconds away from breaking out, from finally taking control of my life again. But then she showed up—Ari, with her shaking hands and pleading eyes, pointing a gun at me like she actually had it in her to shoot.I exhaled sharply, rubbing my face.I needed a new plan.Something was coming.Something bad.And I wasn’t about to sit here and let it happen to me.It was then the explosion came to my mind again. Who must have sent the message? Kouvu? Kouvu had been lying low since the last time I had tried to set him up, but I knew he was waiting for the right time to take me out of the picture and become the next street lord. Ari’s POVI had just been on my desk that afternoon, flipping through the files on Kaelie’s case, though the words barely registered. My mind was stretched thin, caught between the weight of my mistakes and the desperate need to set things right.Kaelie was still out there.I had agreed to Mira’s terms. I had promised to bring Cross. But nothing about this situation felt right.Everything was a mess."Ari."I looked up to see Gina standing near my desk, her expression unusually soft.I tensed automatically, waiting for another lecture, another round of judgment, but instead, she sighed."I just… I wanted to apologize," she said.I blinked. "For what?"She hesitated before sitting across from me. "For how we’ve treated you. For how I’ve treated you. Everyone has been so quick to blame you for everything that’s happened—Kaelie, Aaron, Cross… but I realize now, none of this is just on you."I stared at her, unsure of what to say.Gina exhaled sharply. This was fucking humiliating.Lady Smith had crossed a line last night—one that I’d never let go unpunished. And she would pay for it.I groaned again. Fuck.My dick still ached from last night and my body ached from my wounds. I was slowly drifting off to sleep when the sound of heels clicking against the concrete floor made me lift my head.Right on time.Lady Smith stepped into view, her posture as relaxed as ever, her face painted with amusement. She leaned against the bars of my cell, tilting her head.“Well, well,” she drawled. “How’s my favorite prisoner doing today?”I didn’t answer. I just stared at her; my jaw tight. She smirked, running a hand over the bars. “Not in the mood for small talk? That’s a shame. Her hair was a tangled mess over her face, strands sticking to her damp skin.Pathetic.I walked over to the table, picking up a knife and twirling it between my fingers as I watched her. The dim light cast long shadows on the walls, giving the room an eerie glow. Then, finally, she stirred.A soft groan escaped her lips as her body tensed. Slowly, her eyes fluttered open, blinking against the light. It took her a second to register her surroundings. Then the panic hit.Her breathing turned sharp and erratic. She tugged at the restraints, her body twisting and struggling against the chair.“H-hello?” she called out, her voice trembling. “Somebody—please! The officers in the room seemed caught off guard by my presence, but I didn’t care.I marched straight toward Lady Smith’s office, ignoring the murmurs, ignoring the way people shifted uncomfortably as I passed.I didn’t have time for them.I needed to see Cross.I pushed open Lady Smith’s office door without knocking. She was seated behind her desk, as calm and composed as ever, sifting through some paperwork as if she wasn’t the biggest pain in my ass right now.Her eyes flicked up to me, unreadable."Ah, Detective Walsh," she said smoothly. "To what do I owe this sudden, and might I add, unannounced visit?"I slammed my hands onto her desk. “Kaelie was taken last night.”Lady Smith didn’t even flinch. Obviously, police reports had reached her."And?"My jaw clenched. "And I ne
