Chapter 2
AFTER everyone left the barracks, Luhence sneaked back in to carry me to my room. I wanted to protest, afraid that his father would catch us together. The last thing I would want for Luhence was to get in serious trouble because of me.
"Don't worry, baby. He left with the Deltas to check the west walls," Luhence assured in a low voice, as if he was having a hard time controling his anger.
I couldn't open my eyes nor utter an answer. For the first time, I let myself feel fragile in the arms of my mate. I wanted to cry out of pity for myself but I chose not to make Luhence feel more guilty. He might not say it out loud, but I could feel his fury for himself.
My head rested on Luhence's chest as he carried my tiny body to my room. When I was settled in my bed, Luhence sat on my side and held my shaking hand.
I forced my eyes to open then regretted it the moment I saw Luhence's expression. His honey comb eyes were a shade darker, his jaw clenched so hard I worry he would break his set of pearl white teeth.
He took in some air then gently placed his other hand on my tummy. "I'll steal some meds and get you food. Stay here, babe."
I tightened my hold on his hand when he tried to stand up. When Luhence looked at me, I swallowed the rusty taste of blood in my mouth before I shook my head.
Luhence sighed. He leaned down to kiss my forehead before he rested my hand on his cheek. I had to hold my breath and purse my lips to keep myself from crying. It wasn't his fault. None of this was, but everytime I was getting some beating and he couldn't protect me, he would silently blame himself.
"Just a few more days, Nads. I swear, I'll make him pay for everything he did." He gently squeezed my hand before letting it go. "Let me at least nurse you while he was away."
"S--Someone might tell him."
He shook his head. "Mother called for pretty much everyone. She knew I couldn't just do nothing this time."A broken smile made its way to his thin lips. "She's on my side."
The Luna was a compassionate woman destroyed by her husband. There was a reason why she won against my mother, but over the time, even the older members of the pack noticed the gradual change in her.
She would often isolate herself. Alpha never let her decide for the pack nor speak her mind even when her ideas would make sense. One of the many things she was so jealous of with my mother.
When my mother was still alive, despite being with someone else and only the female Beta, her opinions were welcomed by the Alpha. Her thoughts were heard and she was valued by Alpha more than anyone in the pack. I knew it would be hard for her to accept me someday.
I watched Luhence leave. When he went back, he helped me clean myself before he attended my wounds. He got rid of the anklet so I could heal faster. His presence helped, too, and when I started feeling better, he put my anklet back with a heavy heart.
"I'm sorry, Nads," he uttered with sadness in his eyes.
My lips twisted for a small smile as I raised my hand to touch his face. This man was far from his father. I knew once Luhence was already the Alpha, things would finally change for everyone.
What was scaring me though was his plans for his own Dad.
"Rest for now. Dad will be back by evening. I'll ask someone else to do your chores."
I shook my head. "They might get in trouble."
"No. I'll tell Dad you're too weak to work. Don't argue with me on this one, babe." He kissed me lightly on the lips before he stood up. "I need to go. Will you promise to stay here and rest?"
A simple nod was my only answer. When Luhence left, I did what he asked. I slept the whole day. Luckily, Alpha Lawrence didn't return until evening. He was badly hurt like the rest of his Deltas, even his Beta.
Everyone in the pack became busy attending to them so I had the chance to steal some food in the kitchen before I sneaked out to go to the falls where I would usually train at night while everyone was asleep.
I placed my food and a bottle of water by the rocks before I removed all my clothes. My fingers burned when I removed my anklet. Even the part on my ankle were reddish already and I knew how much my wolf hated it.
Taking in some air, I went in all fours on the ground. My eyes shut as I let my wolf, Auror, come to the surface. I was smaller compared to the current Luna. Her furr were amber red with some brown like Luhence's, while mine were white with some black furr on my neck that stretched to my belly.
My tail wiggled and my nose began to sniff the wet vegetation on the ground. When my wolf and I finally felt balanced, I began to run. My heart felt free as I roamed through the woods, my soul at peace as I connect to nature.
When my wolf gone tired of running around, I returned to the falls and shifted back. I put my clothes on but when I realized that my anklet was gone, feat thrummed in my heart and I immediately looked around.
My wolf growled inside me when I saw a pair of golden yellow eyes from a distant, looking at me in an intense way. I didn't know why but I felt that whoever owned those eyes, didn't belong to my pack.
Its gaze alone shouted dominance and power I never felt even from Alpha Lawrence. The stranger's presence brought me chills, and when its eyes narrowed at me, I felt my wolf backing down.
I blinked in surprise. Auror was a stubborn wolf that's why I often got in trouble during my first years of having her in the surface. It took me a while to get along with her and to make her listen to me, but this stranger, it only took one sharp look to tame Auror.
My fists balled on my sides as I swallowed the lump I didn't notice formed in my throat. "W--Who's that?"
The stranger didn't answer. When the wind blew hard, a few strands of my hair covered my face. I immediately pushed it away and looked at the stranger's direction again but it was already gone.
My forehead creased as I looked around, searching for whoever that was. Even my feet started moving. I went to the spot where I saw it before I let Auror into the surface. My eyes turned gold as I went on one knee. My hand touched the tree and realized it was stained with blood.
Auror sniffed in the air, but the stranger's scent was something we had never smelled before.
"Could it be a rogue?" I asked Auror.
"I don't think so. Its blood smells powerful," she answered which confused me.
Powerful? It couldn't be anyone from another packs, right? Nirvana follows a strict law set by the ancestors. Whatever happens in each pack, should only be handled by them. We were basically on our own unlike what I heard about the District of Remorse. The five packs in their District work together, maybe that's why they remained the most powerful.
Auror alerted me when she felt someone approaching my direction. I immediately got up and was about to hide when I saw the Luna taking her steps towards my direction.
My eyes slightly widened. I bowed my head to pay my respect and the Luna jerked her head slightly, showing me she appreciated it.
"What are you doing here in the middle of the night, Nadine?" she asked with a gentle voice, but her face remained expressionless.
My heartbeat began to raise. I looked away and swallowed hard before I answered in shaking voice. "Forgive me, Luna. I was just out here to train myself. The Alpha never allowed me to join the trainings so I did this."
I prepared myself already in case she would lash out to me, but the Luna didn't speak until she's already in front of me. "I smelled your scent on my son when he went home earlier." She held me by my chin and made me look into her cold eyes. "Tell me, child, is my son your mate? Is it why you're out here training yourself?"
My face lost its color as fear clawed my heart. "L--Luna..."
Surprisingly, the corners of her lips slightly twisted upward. She took in some breath and released it before she let go of my chin. "My son is very important to me, Nadine. I would never wish for him to have the same fate as his father's." Pain crossed her face. "Your mother lost the fight against me. I was naive to think my husband would move on from her, but even when she's already dead, his heart still belongs only to your mother."
My head bowed, unable to look longer in her eyes that sreamed how much she was suffering. "I'm... sorry."
"Save it, child." She turned her back on me. "I will make sure you'll be sorry once you lose the match. There is no way I'll watch my son feel the same pain that killed my husband."
Her words brought chills down my spine, and as I watched her disappeared through the woods leading back to the village, my knees almost turned jelly. Great. Now I have more reasons to win the Luna title.
I sighed and began my combat trainings. I applied everything Luhence taught me, and when I was finally exhausted, I went my last stop before heading back home.
I took the trail leading to the pack's cemetery, but when I saw the man laying on his back right on top of my mother's grave, I immediately hid behind the tree. When I realized he didn't notice my presence, I carefully peeked to see him.
Bottles of liquor were on his sides. Alpha looked drunk already, and when he pulled himself up, I gasped and covered my lips after seeing him hugging mother's gravestone.
"Forgive me, love. If only I broke the laws that night..." he said with tears trailing down his face.
My chest tightened as I watched him rest his head on mother's gravestone. This was the second time I'd seen Alpha cry this hard. The first time was when they retrieved my parents' bodies.
"I will never stop, Nimpha. I will do everything to make them pay."
My forehead creased. Make whom pay?
Chapter 3What I heard the night I saw Alpha on my mother's grave bothered me so much. It kept me up for a couple more hours, and when I finally drifted off to sleep, I dreamed of the night we were attacked by the hunters.I was so scared. Father was trying to hold down the hunters who were chasing us but they were too many. Mum was crying while she was guiding me through the woods because she knew Dad was already in a bad shape when we left him. When we reached a place where she could hide me, she immediately returned to help my Dad.I begged her to stay but she just smiled at me and promised that everything would be okay, but when she left and didn't return after half an hour, I swallowed my fear and got out to search for them. With only the moonlight guiding my way, I trembled in fear but I kept going until I found my mother laying next to my Dad. I cried and fell on my knees as tears trailed down my cheeks. My mother held me by the side
Chapter 4THE WHOLE place became a battle ground for our pack and the hunters. We didn't expect them to come on a night like this, given the fact that we were considered the strongest during this time... or maybe so I thought.Maybe we weren't."Lu!" I screamed when I saw him fall, struggling to see his surroundings while his own blood was blinding his left eye. At least four hunters were trying to hold him down, but Luhence managed to get back on his feet and made a loud, terrifying growl.I wanted to say I was amazed, but I knew that wasn't enough to scare the hunters away. It was... more like a cry for help from the neighboring packs, but with the conflicts going around Nirvana District, help was something I wasn't expecting to come tonight. With my claws, I scratched the hunters attacking me right across their chests. Blood splurted out as their flesh ripped in front of me before they fell one by one on the ground. This was the closest encounter I have had with hunters since I los
Chapter 5I could hear murmurs from somewhere. There were voices I couldn't recognize and I could tell by the way they were talking that they weren't happy with what they were discussing.I even heard a few words that slowly awakened my spirit as if it had been dormant for a long time. Their conversation coincided with the heavy rain, while I tried to blink my still heavy eyelids.Attack.Fight.Hunters.Zenios.Zenios ...My pack. What happened to our pack? Where am I? Luhence? What happened?I tried to open my eyes and scanned the whole place from the white-coated walls to every single object inside. None of it was familiar to me. Everything was foreign to me, including the scent that lingered inside the room. This wasn't my home...No matter how shitty my living situation was in Zenios, that was, without a doubt, the only home I had.Where am I?Starting to panic, I tried my best to pull myself up. I groaned when I felt the pain in every fiber in my body, as if I got slammed on the
Chapter 6MAYBE it was out of fear that even when my body was sore all over, I was able to get on my feet to run. Calgary watched me as I weakly twisted the knob. He's obviously enjoying seeing me struggle just to get away from him, but the smirk on his handsome face made me eager to leave his territory.I gritted my teeth as I struggled to walk. With my hand on my wounded tummy, I dragged myself towards the stairs and tried to hurry. Calgary's footsteps echoed behind me, and the more he was getting closer towards me, the harder my heart banged inside my chest.I can't die here. Not in this forsaken place, not when I still hadn't earned my mother's pride in Zenios. Her face appeared in my head, and as I hurried down the stairs, all my hardships in Alpha Lawrence's hands came inside my mind. It gave me the motivation to jump down the stairs as I shifted into my wolf form. I landed on all fours, and before I ran outside, I glanced at Calgary who was standing on top of the staircase, loo
Chapter 7"Damn it!" I hissed as I tried to remove the chains on my ankles. That heartless son of a bitch really tied me up in his bedroom, leaving me with no choice but to sleep next to him or hurt my back by lying on the floor.I sighed as I gave up. Auror felt so tired inside me, and if it wasn't for my pride, I would've laid on Calgary's comfortable bed by now, but instead, I sat on the floor and rested my head against the wall. How long would he keep me here? He's been sleeping soundly for a couple days while I had no choice but to sleep while sitting on the floor. If this was his way of teaching me a lesson, I'd rather go back to Alpha Lawrence and let him hurt me all day long.Familiar steps began to echo outside the room. I watched the door swing open, and when Calgary saw me looking at him, he flashed his annoying smirk before he shut the door.I quenched my eyes at him as he walked towards the rod where my chain was linked. He then wore his leather gloves and removed the sil
Chapter 8I lifted my head when the door opened. As I had expected, it was Beta Lynel again who would attend to me. For some reason, Calgary had me transferred to another room and stopped seeing me. His Beta said he had himself locked up for several days, unable to control his own wolf. Something Calgary has never experienced before."Morning," Lynel greeted with a smile. He was, by far, the nicest member of the Claivan Pack. Whenever Lynel was taking me outside so I could heal faster by connecting to nature, most of their pack members would glare at me as if I had done something terrible to them. I just assumed that it was because I was from Zenios, and all of the packs in Nirvana; Zenios, Claivan, Prudence, and Mayhem, were in conflict because of something Calgary did in the past.I pulled myself up and followed him. "Your big bad Alpha still locking himself up?" I couldn't help but ask as we walked down the stairs."Nope." He looked at me with a slight smile. "He went to Mayhem to
Chapter 9Because of the collar Calgary gave me, I was finally free to move around the house, but I still can't go outside without supervision. I got bored in my room, so I decided to go downstairs and see what I could do while I was waiting for them to bring me dinner.I found an old piano down the hall. It was dusty and looked untouched for years. I sat on the chair and opened it before I started checking if it was still working. Good thing it was. When I was young, Mom would usually play piano for me. I even remember hearing her play in the middle of the night downstairs. When I tried to come see her once, I saw someone sitting on the couch, silently watching Mom as she played her favorite piece. Now that I'm grown up and I remember it, I realized that it was probably Alpha Lawrence. My chest hurts. Maybe Mom was deeply in love with him, too. That's why I often see her staring at Alpha with so much regret. Whenever she put me to sleep, she would always tell me how much of a good ma
Chapter 10My gaze drifted from the ceiling to the door of my room when it opened. Calla went in first while holding Calgary by his hand. She's even carrying her black furry cat as she smiled sweetly at me.Calgary touched his jaw, a little shy, probably because his daughter requested to see me. Calla didn't bother me anyway. She's a nice kid and I knew how it felt like to not have my mom around, so I pulled myself up and motioned my hand to call her. "Come here, Calla."She let go of her father's hand then walked towards me. Calla doesn't talk. I still didn't know why yet but I made a mental note to ask Lynel tomorrow. When I heard Calgary clear his throat, I looked at him and waited for him to speak."She wants to sleep here... with you."Calla stared at me as if she was begging me to say yes. I smiled back at her and tucked a few strands of her brown hair towards the back of her ear. "Of course, you can. It would be nice to have a roommate who's really sweet."Her innocent eyes gli
Chapter 24: More Than EnoughMy body was sore all over because of the training but Calgary's presence helped me heal faster. When Hyrum's men came during dinner to inform us that help had finally arrived and the perimeters were safe, somehow, he felt a sense of relief even for a short while."Would you like some more soup?" I asked Calla while we sit on the table with Ahma, Lynel, Alpha Lawrence, and Calgary.Calla nodded happily. "Thank you, Mommy," she said before giving me a sweet smile.Calgary caressed his daughter's hair before he leaned to me. "We'll just talk about something in my office. Finish your food."I jerked my head in response. When he left with Lynel, Ahma, and Alpha Lawrence, I stood up carrying Calla's bowl to get her more soup, but Lindsey immediately followed me to the table where the caserole was.She crossed her arms and shot up a brow at me. "Getting so comfy playing the fake mommy and wife role, huh?"I rolled my eyes and shook my head. "Not now. I'm too tire
Chapter 23: A Taste of EuphoriaSomehow, the talk I had with Alpha Lawrence a few days ago, helped us communicate a little better. He no longer avoids me that much, and I could speak to him directly now without feeling aneasy.I took a series of deep breaths to center myself just like what Alpha Lawrence instructed me to do. He was circling around me, holding a silver knife and ready to attack me any moment now."Tracking is more than just following a scent nor listening to your surrounding. It's connecting to everything around you, being one with the ground, the wind, and every living thing that you can reach, but your gift has no use if you're too slow to dodge an attack," said Alpha Lawrence, an in a blink of an eye, we has already behind me, the knife was only half an inch away from my throat.Goodness, he was really fast. No wonder he was known for his combat skills. Now I wanted to think his Luna poisoned him on the night of the selection, because I know for sure that with his s
Chapter 22: A Painful TalkI didn't know if I was anxious because I would be training with Alpha Lawrence today or I was just worried because Calgary joined his Deltas last night to guard our territories. No matter how many times I rolled over my bed, I couldn't really bring myself to sleep. Maybe I was both anxious and worried, but despite the lack of sleep, I still got up before sunrise to prepare for my first day of training. When I went down to get myself some coffee to wake me up, Alpha Lawrence was already in the kitchen, making himself some brewed coffee. As if he realized that I was planning to get myself some, he cleared his throat and saved a cup for me.I pursed my lips as I walked the length towards the cupboard. My heart was going crazy with the silence enveloping us, and when I finally had the courage to glance his way, I spoke."G--Good morning, Alpha."He paused from taking a sip but he didn't look at me. "Just because we're in Claivan doesn't mean I'll be nice during
Chapter 21: Her Special Ability"Prudence just lost the last of their best trackers. All we have right now is Hyrum," said Calgary as we gathered at the pack house with Alpha Quira, her Beta, Ariz, Lynel, Alpha Lawrence and Ahma.My fingers clasped. The atmosphere around was too thick, probably because we all know that our District is in so much trouble.Mayhem had no trackers for two decades now while Claivan was never given any. Trackers are special types of wolves who can sense anything even when it was miles away. They were born with the strongest senses. Some show their abilities early like Mom, some were late bloomers.Zenios' tracker was my mother that's why even when she was only a Beta she-wolf back then, she would always work hand in hand with Alpha Lawrence because she was very significant to our pack.I saw Alpha Lawrence straightened his back. "If Nadine was able to sense Luhence while everybody else didn't, maybe that's because she inherited Nimpha's abilities."All eyes
Chapter 20: A Storm is ComingDried leaves whipped into the foggy air as Calgary and I ran faster through the woods. His wolf kept on challenging Auror, but with us finally gaining back our strength, she showed him we were their equal. Auror jumped over a fallen tree and rolled over the thick bed of dried vegetation before she gained her momentum again, but Calgary's wolf was fast enough to stop Auror from jumping over the cliff.Auror let out a whimper of affection as Calgary's wolf licked her face. She rubbed her head on his neck, gaining more power from the bond we share with our mate. We had been running for hours, but our hunger for freedom felt insatiable. Auror and I had never been permitted to roam around Nirvana this way, but with Calgary accompanying us, we knew we would be safe.Calgary's wolf howled, telling us to finally go back. I felt Auror's desire to ask for a little more time, but when thunders began roaring in the sky, she changed her mind and followed Calgary's wol
Chapter 19: Meeting His WolfAfter Lynel took Calla to Ahma's house, Calgary and I went out for a walk in the woods. I realized he would explain why his daughter called me 'Mommy', maybe he was thinking that I didn't like it at all.As soon as we got deeper into the woods, I cleared my throat and looked at him. "It's the first time I heard Calla speak."There was a glint of loneliness in his eyes when he met my gaze. "She stopped talking since her mother left us. She was barely four... and that was the worst night of my life not because I just lost my Luna, but because Calla's painful plea for her mother not to go was the last thing we heard from my daughter."I swallowed when my chest felt a different kind of pain, as if Calgary was letting me feel how he felt the night his Luna left to be with someone else. Maybe if I was in his shoes, I wouldn't be able to handle the pain, and I know, even if Calgary wasn't telling me, what his Luna did left a scar in his heart. A fear that no matt
Chapter 18: Jealous"Are you sure it was him?" asked Alpha Lawrence as soon as I settled on the vacant space next to Calgary.I rubbed my cold palms on my thighs as I swallowed the lump in my throat. What happened still scare the shit out of me, because I knew I wasn't hallucinating."It's him. I can't be wrong," I answered, my voice almost tremble.Calgary breathed out a heavy breath before he slightly moved closer to me. Maybe he felt I needed a little comfort, so he placed his palm on my lower back before he stroked my slightly revealed skin with his thumb. "Try to calm down a bit."Ahma picked up her cup of tea to take a small sip before she spoke. "If it was him, then Calgary may be right.""Right about what?" Alpha Lawrence asked."About Luhence and your wife being part of Sigma." Calgary leaned against the backrest of the couch. "Quira had a hunch that Luhence wasn't really yours. We all know Felicity used to date a hunter in secret, before she won the fight against Nimpha."I
Chapter 17: A Different ManWith a loudly banging heart inside my chest, I immediately ran outside, searching for the trail of Luhence's scent. I knew it was him. I had already gone familiar with my boyfriend's scent, and as soon as I saw him a few meters away from the West border of Claivan, Auror stopped me from taking another step."Lu?" I called. He turned to face me, but when I saw his face, Auror warned me to go back to the village because it was too obvious that something had changed about Luhence. He looked... stronger, as if there was something else running through his veins besides his Alpha blood. Considering that he wasn't surrounded by his people, his scent was not supposed to smell this much power."Babe..." He flashed a smile. "I missed you. Can you come here, please?"Don't. Auror warned me again, and my gut told me to listen to my wolf.I swallowed the pool of saliva in my mouth as I balled my fists. "What happened to you? Why did you and your Mom go missing? Are you
Chapter 16: A Familiar ScentHolding the tray of food for Alpha Lawrence, I swallowed the lump in my throat before I pushed the door open. He was already staying at Calgary's house, healing the injuries and wounds he got from defending my mother's grave. It was awkward when our eyes met, but he was the first one to look away as if he didn't want to see my rims that always reminds him of my mother. When the door shut behind me, I placed his food on the small table sitting on the corner near the door that was leading towards the veranda."Calgary left to investigate," I said as soon as I turned to face him.He let out a heavy breath. "You're supposed to address him as Alpha. It's disrespectul to call someone of authority by their first name.""I haven't submitted to him yet. Technically, you are still my Alpha considering that Luhence is nowhere to be found," I replied. For the first time in my life, I was able to speak to him that long, as if a part of me was sure that he was no longer
