Chapter 1
Nearly a week has passed since the Ghouls attack and Brandon's attempted escape.
That made this nearly the third month Brandon had lived beneath Ezekiel's roof.
Everything had gone back to normal after Ezekiel awoke from his fatal poisoning by Ghoul venom with amnesia. Everything had reset to the night before he had tried to escape, to where Brandon and Ezekiel were still avoiding each other and Brandon as refusing to let the Shifter touch him or get near.
And yet nothing was the same for Brandon.
Brandon sat alone in the kitchen. He avoided the Shifters like a plague. He was afraid to be near them....because the flame was acting strange.
With a back wards head movement Brandon forced the food down into his body. And lifted a full glass of orange juice to his lips with trembling fingertips. The sharp, acidic taste of the juice made him gag deeply and turn his sweaty face away.
After the events surrounding the attack and his attempt to escape, and saving Ezekiel from being fatally poisoned Brandon was beyond exhausted. As was the flame.
It begged for fresh energy to feed on, but as always Brandon denied its seductive cries for food. For life. For death.
In the absence of new energy, the pain returned, aching cramps in his soul that signaled the hunger. While waves of sharp nausea washed across his gut removing the food in the sea of his belly and thrusting it back up into the world.
Brandon had hardly managed to hold his food down all week and had in fact flushed most of his food down the toilet the last few days, in order to hide this fact that he couldn't eat from Glen lest the Healer become concerned.
The kitchen was clean and quiet and for the first time in a long time he was all alone. And he was surprised to realize that he didn't particularly enjoy the silence as much as he used to. Brandon didn't really know when the change had taken place but he knew that it had, Inside of him. Here he was alone; something that had always felt right and safe, and all he wanted to do was hear Lander make another mean joke, or listen to Glen humming as she cooked or Mantilo tell stories or watch Walter best Nate in some game of wits.... or just listen to Ezekiel's strong steady breathing beside him. He missed the Shifter beside him....he missed his warmth, what little Brandon had allowed to touch his blackened heart.
Maybe it was all the months he had spent alone out in the world, maybe he was just craving companionship? Then again maybe that wasn't it.
After all he enjoyed spending time with the Guardians and their parents. There was this love around them that he had never known. No family, no real friends; Brandon had always been alone and to some extent that it what had kept him safe. But now he was surrounded by care and kindness.
People wanted him, they cared if he came out of his room, or if he ate, they worried if he didn't speak and were angry with him when he didn't voice his wants and desires. It was strange and at first it had been hard to adjust to, but gradually he'd been learning and now he wasn't even happy in simple silence. It had always seemed strange to him when people had spoken of healing. Because Brandon had always believed that some things just didn't heal. Some scars didn't fade, but god help him, he felt it.
He felt healed...at least on the surface. On the other side he knew that he could never get as close to the Leopards as they wanted him to. After that incident with Ezekiel he hadn't been able to look any of them in the eyes. He'd done a lot of thinking after that and he knew that he couldn't afford to let them see what he could really do. He couldn't forget that every day he woke up in their home that he was lying to them...endangering them. His secrets were too deep...
The festering corner inside of himself that he hid from sight would never heal as long as he was hunted. The truth about his scars, about his past, about himself no one would ever know.
But after weeks spent talking with Ezekiel or sitting around the tables with the rest of his family, the silence in the kitchen felt oppressive and lonely. Knowing that he should just go to his room, crawl into the bed and stay away from Ezekiel and his family...especially Ezekiel; Brandon swallowed one last bite of his toast, took another sip of his orange juice without gagging this time and stood up. He left the kitchen and headed straight to his room.
Chapter 2Brandon left the kitchen turned down the hallway way and headed for the central stair case. The entire house though silent felt far too familiar now, too much like home. The front door was open as it always was in the mid-days hours to signal to the other Leopards in the Clan that Mantilo was always available as Clan head. Brandon passed the doorway, put his hand on the rail of the stair case and just as he started up the steps a ferocious snarl tore down the hallway to his left. He jumped hard. The sound vibrated though Brandon, too familiar, it lit up his blood and instantly he knew that it was Ezekiel growling.Powerful, but playful the snarl forced Brandon's heart beat to speed up. He tilted his head up and tested the different currents in the air. He caught the feel of the home and the clean wood, but along with that he sensed the residue of slight energies of Ezekiels brothers. Not knowing what he would find Brandon turned, hopped down the three steps that he had barel
Chapter 3Brandon's legs ate up wood as he tore across the sparring room. He couldn't hear Lander but he could sense him. Feel his green sharp eyes on Brandon's back.Though Brandon still had to hold the energy down that burned inside of his core. He didn't focus on it to much because it was slowly dissipating. Physical exercise had always helped keep his powers at bay and as he moved it becomes less and less of a struggle to hold the energy inside of him down. But on the other side of it also fed his movement, making him not only stronger but faster.Though his feet were moving Brandon's mind was far from blank. He had no idea what he was going to do. Yet. He may have been fast and fit from months of journeying, but that would only get him so far against a power house like Lander. What now? Brandon wondered to himself. Distance between them was good, but could he maintain that distance? He may have been mortal, but he was capable of so much more then any mortal. And yet this fight ha
Chapter 4Victory can be its own bitter defeat.-Unknown"Hell yeah! WOOOOOHO!!" Nate suddenly howled like the Wolf that he was from across the mats.Brandon turned his way as he shouted and then Brandon smiled as he watched Nate running across the room towards him and for a moment Brandon had to shake the crazy image he had of a large grey wolf, tongue lolling out of its mouth running right for him.Walter and Ezekiel weren't far behind. Nate jumped into the air just before he got close and Brandon laughed as he watched him clear five feet of air effortlessly. He skidded to a stop next to Brandon and gave him a very enthusiastic punch in the arm that made Brandon stumble to the side.Nate smiled at him in apology as Brandon rubbed away the pain, then he watched as Nate walked over to his table bound brother. Careful not to get within his reach, Nate preceded to taunt him."Wow its 2 and 0 for you today Lander. First Walter and now....?" Nate laughed at him heartily. "Candy pants rule
Chapter 5Brandon watched the door close behind the three Guardians and took a deep breath. He wasn't particularly hungry, but for now he wasn't even remotely ready to retire back into his solitary room. Honestly too bored to resign himself to another twelve hours of solitary confinement Brandon went to follow them, but he had only taken a few steps before he was wishing that the sound of food didn't sound completely repulsive.During the course of the last few minutes his inner battle had take a turn for the worse. Brandon realized that using a small amount of energy after only a few days of rest may not have been the best idea. Brandon put his arms across his stomach and closed his eyes as pain flashed down from his skull and settled in the pit of his core.Brandon was so caught off guard by the sickness rising that he forgot not everyone had left the sparing room."Brandon?" Ezekiel said to him. He was a few feet away about to follow his brother stoop the kitchen , but he had caugh
Brandon pushed his power down and tried to focus. He swallowed as more nausea rose as the small flame inside of him was denied a meal. With the sickness came pure hot agitation. “I’m telling you everything, but you won’t listen to me, Ezekiel!” He said elbowing Ezekiel in his chest as hard as he could.Ezekiel growled and released him quickly, before Brandon could hit him again. Pivoting on his heel Brandon turned to him so that his back was to the wall. He glared at the beast trembling openly.“I’m not going to confess anything to you.....So STOP interrogating me at every turn! I didn’t ask to be here! I just want to be left alone!”Ezekiel, easily unconvinced, smiled at him darkly. He stepped forward and leaned in crowding him. He put his arms on the wall boxing Brandon in. Brandon turned his head away as Ezekiel drew into him or his face would have been inches from Ezekiels.Ezekiel didn’t speak for a moment and even though Brandon couldn’t see his face he could feel Ezekiels eyes
Ezekiel followed Brandon out of the sparing room moments after he ran out, but he was unnervingly fast. It was odd that Brandon’s speed hadn’t disturbed him until now, but even when they had first meet Ezekiel realized that he should have noticed that the man moved more like a beast....and not a mortal.Brandon was somehow already cresting the stairs, before Ezekiel had even touched the first one and by time he had made it to Brandon’s door it was closed. Panting slightly Ezekiel stopped and hesitated. He should have knocked, but something told him that something....was amiss. That Brandon was hurt.He felt it all around him, he sensed a strange residue on his soul.Something Powerful. Something....unnatural. Dangerous. Wrong. It had wafted around Brandon for a second like an invisible blanket. Then he had felt it again. Something he had been sure had only been a figment of his fevered dreams at night. Power so raw, so sweet, so familiar and amazing that his body nearly trembled. He h
It was disorienting to wake up...and be floating in mid-air....over a giant bottomless rocky chasm. The sun, a beautiful russet of rose and orange glowed from behind the peaks of the mountains and the valleys and the clouds of billowing smoke.Wait....I’m dreaming....And just like that Brandon heard the men shouting at each other below him.One of the men was Brandon. But the Brandon of his dreams, was garbed in a bright white and long silken robe that seemed to exude power. Eshowe a prestige and beauty that was almost mesmerizing. This Brandon had hair that was short and cropped, he spoke with a strange dialect....and was dripping in blood and wielded a long blade in his hand that was smeared in fresh gore.Across from the Brandon of his dreams...there stood one of the most beautiful men that Brandon had ever seen. This man was Kail. He screamed at Brandon. His face stretched into various expressions. From agony, to rage....to hatred. Kail was and had been a part of Brandon’s life f
Instead the Brandon of his dream, took the blade in his own hand and laughed. His voice cracked on a sob as the metal clanged across the mountain top. He dropped to his knees having disarmed himself. “They are all dead Kail. I just....felt the last of them die.....Now I guess peace will rain....Come brother.... you can finish the slaughter.” The phantom Brandon sobbed.A sharp knife of agony split Brandon’s heart apart as he watched the dream phantom of himself scream and claw the earth.“WHY!! Why did you do this to us?” Kail’s blade clanged into the earth...and with a broken scream he collapsed into the mountains soil. Kail put a hand to his head and bowed down as if he were in agony. “My people.....My Clan....Their sorrow is unimaginable. We never wanted to betray our own...!” Kail said. But Brandon’s dream phantom simply laughed. “They couldn’t allow Acaris to fall into our hands.” He said. “They needed it to rule the world, but with our deaths.....I know you will stand against th
Chapter 20"Brandon! Brandon get up!?" Ezekiel shouted at him, but Brandon didn't respond. He didn't move or moan. Jacob had struck him out cold.Shock, pain and surprise had kept Ezekiel mostly silent as Brandon and Jacob had played out their intense drama. But as they had spoken Ezekiel had fought and clawed at the bottom of his strength trying to Shift. Or simply gather the power to stand up and fight, but Jacob had gone too far. And as Brandon scent hit the air....a sharp unintelligent rage lit up his soul."You're a dead man...do you fucking hear me! " Ezekiel started to surge to his feet, his eyes locked on the man he was going to kill for harming something so precious and vital to him."Ahhh!" Ezekiel couldn't help but roar as his head was suddenly yanked back by the roots of his hair and one of the lions put a long sharp blade to his throat instantly cutting into the skin just enough to draw fresh blood and keep him from struggling lest Ezekiel rip his own wind pipe to shreds.
Chapter 19Suddenly Jacob was back across the clearing and with the dull side of the blade he pressed the cool metal to his flesh and forced Brandon to look at him."Oh what is this...are you crying Lil One?" Jacob sneered easily clocking the heavy mist trying to gather into Brandon's green gaze.Brandon felt his entire body seizing on rage and sorrow. His heart felt like it melting and his head was whirling with hatred for the lion. How could he!? I'll kill him!! I'll fucking kill him for this!!Brandon was sure that his face was bleeding over with cold wrath, but Jacob only laughed in light of the blood lust on his face. Making Brandon see deep red. "Your a monster..." he whispered spitefully preparing to lunge at the beast. "OHhhhh....So scary Lil one! You look like you want to disembowel me....Sounds like a fun time we can share, but there is no need to be so angry. I just wanted answers. So tell me is this boy somebody to you after all? Is he somebody special to you perhaps?"Hu
Chapter 18Jacob paced a small line in front of Brandon who stood and watched him warily.Brandon had slowly regained his composure over the last few seconds. He felt choked with both fear and rage, but he stood with his head held high...and his eyes trained on something far across the clearing and with a cool expression on his face.Brandon didn't make eyes contact with Ezekiel.....he knew it would be a mistake to call attention to the Guardian. Jacob...was dangerous. How did he find me so quickly?Brandon asked himself. How long before he rest of them find me?Brandon was jerked form his introspection as Jacob suddenly stopped pacing and spoke"You look so upset...." Jacobs heavy baritone caressed him even though he didn't want it to. Jacobs's voice had always had the inexplicable power to lull him into a calm....or less fearful state of mind. Even when the Lion was the on who Brandon needed to fear the most. Jacob steeped closer until he was inches from Brandon's face. "This must b
Chapter 17To give himself to the beast was easy and hard all at once. The creature was motivated by blood and violence and the hunt. Not by logic and emotions....but as Ezekiel slid into the back seat of his own mind and body...one thing unified him and his beasts will like nothing before....and it was the urge to see Brandon protected from harm.Instinctively knowing to keep Brandon at its back, but also in its peripheral sight the leopard stalked forwards. The leopard instantly pinpointed his attacker, and leapt through the air. Putting all of his might into his voice, willing it to pour into the earth itself. He declared his challenge, even as his claws racked deeply across the face of the male lion that had attacked him.The Leopard locked in. It sunk its jaws deep into the lions face and nose. Wet and sharp. The sounds the two made seemed unholy as they rolled around. The Lion that the Leopards nails and jaws bit into was not large. He was a slim lion and tall, but his mane bare
Chapter 16Ezekiel pumped all of his energy into his lungs and legs. Even so, he had barely made it a few yards before the sounds of pursuit were gaining on his heels. Ezekiel had knew that he could never have out run the lions on foot but he hadn't really planned to.He just had to stay ahead of them until he made it to the central compound. Holding Brandon close to his chest Ezekiel ran until his arms ached and his legs were burning and the sounds of large padded feet faded slightly and still he carried on. Spongy pine needles blanketed his footsteps, while shafts of sunlight fought to pierce the canopy of pine needles above. The silent trees bounced back his furious breaths as he traveled at the speed of a leopard. But Ezekiel had only made it three fourths to the central compound, almost 4 miles of nonstop running in mortal form before it happened. He hadn't heard the lion stalking closer until it was too late. A scuffle of pine was all he registered then something large and sharp
Chapter 15One of us is going down.-Headstrong (Trapt)Ezekiel turned to behold the intruders. They were closing in on his location fast. Following his scent easily which told him that they were hunters. There were only three of them. They moved along the expanse of the field jogging toward him with an easy fluidity that spoke volumes. Their bodies though in motion seemed slow and relaxed, but their eyes and the grace with which they moved, slow or not told him that he was dealing with three very strong, very balanced Shifter males.Ezekiel could see the three males scenting the air and that told him one thing. The three shifters were well aware his presence and that he was alone. He knew that by now the intruders were well aware that he was also a shifter but they continued to close the distance to him. Which made him think that they were either looking for a fight or a lone target. Ezekiel also knew that he only had seconds until they were close enough to attack him and he was cont
"Brandon!?" Ezekiel said bending close, but Brandon didn't answer. The smell of tears tickled Ezekiels senses. "Brandon please talk to me!?" He asked again, but all he got were short erratic gasps.I've gotta take him back to the infirmary. He needs to rest.Ezekiel thought anxiously denouncing himself for a fool. Why had he moved someone in Brandon state so soon after his earlier sickness? His body obviously wasn't done healing itself...But No sooner then he'd shifted his body to turn back to the building Ezekiel realized that he and Brandon weren't alone anymore. In fact they were utterly surrounded.Years as Guardian of his lands lent him the only warning. There was a scent in the air that he hadn't smelt in many years. He also felt it in the cry of the birds and the waxing of violent energy that was trying to descend all around him. Something was definitely coming.Ezekiel didn't want to alert the intruders to his location, so he fought his first natural instinct which was too lo
It was a good question. What would Ezekiel do with the information he had sought to uncover for so long? Would he feel compelled to speak of it with his family? Would he continue to ask Brandon a million other questions and continue to prod for the truth? Would he back off? Would he act differently?Perhaps sensing that the two of them were at a cross roads Ezekiel took a breath and instead of doing anything Brandon thought he would do Ezekiel conceded all of the control over to him with only a few murmured words. "I don't really know....Brandon we obviously have more to talk about....but...." He softly admitted. "What do YOU want to happen now...?"A sharp wave of emotion pricked Brandon. It was uncanny how alike the two of them were at certain moment; how unprepared for the current situation the two of them were. "I don't know either...." Brandon softly laughed, and cast Ezekiel a sad smile before he said. "I guess first of all...We need to get back to the mansion?"At Brandon's sl
n a few pain filled moments of movement Brandon had managed to pull himself up from the bed and dress himself. The air was so thick with tension that Brandon felt as though he could split it simply if he made the wrong move. There was frustration and deceit hanging across him and Ezekiel....but of course this paled in comparison to the sheer....almost desperate ache to have the minutes of before return. To have Ezekiels tongue and his hands roaming across his skin....Brandon banished these thoughts with a pained hiss as he pulled a cotton white tee shirt over his head and felt yet another vicious, hungry stab dance across the core of his body. The Flame needled him with small bouts of hurt and nausea as he continued to deny it and himself the one thing it craved. Finally the two of them were sitting on the edge of the cot. Neither of them were speaking. Neither of them....seemed even able to take heavy breaths or move....Until finally Brandon braked a small quite laugh."You're sudden
