Helena's POV

The days flew by and with college taking up most of my time, I didn't even notice. Saturday was nice and the weather was firm, making it possible for us to go out with light and comfortable clothes. I returned home looking forward to a shower after a quiet day at the record store where I worked. Nothing like my laptop, some snacks to eat, and some good movies. Yes, my Saturday night would be that way, and I had no problem with it. I had received my paycheck, and I was overjoyed to be able to contribute to the expenses, and to be putting more than half of my salary into an account that I had opened in order to have enough money so that we could get a place to live. Of course my mother didn't know about this last part, otherwise it wouldn't be any fun. The Carters would not be having any events that weekend, which meant that quiet would reign and I would not have any injured fingers while cutting anything.

My mood was magnificent, I could almost hear the birds singing and a happy Lilly Allen song playing as I entered the mansion and headed home, however, I felt my smile fade from the moment I came across a group of people in the pool area.

Some of John's friends were there. John was sitting on one of the lounge chairs with Cassie between his legs. He was wearing dark glasses that looked ridiculously good on his face, his exposed muscles formed a perfect set with his whole body, and I felt like a complete fool for admiring him so dazzled like that. I swallowed hard and shook my head to shake off those eccentric feelings. Pathetic, Helena. Pathetic. Inside the pool the rest of the guys were chatting, sipping their drinks served in crystal clear glasses, laughing at something Bryan had said. I exhaled and decided to continue on my way knowing that I would have to pass by there. I started to walk as nonchalantly as possible, but I could already feel people staring at me.

"Hey, cutie" I closed my eyes, disbelieving that Bryan was really going to give me hell in front of everyone. I pretended not to hear, continuing my steps to my house, but it was obvious that he wouldn't give up "Are you deaf? Or do you only know how to interact with kitchen utensils?" he scoffed thinking he was funny. I heard the laughter of the others present and felt my blood boil.

If he wanted to irritate me, he succeeded.

I stopped walking immediately and stared at him, showing that I didn't see anything funny in that. I felt my face heat up with anger and my expression certainly showed the repulsion that came from that ridiculous remark. I noticed that John was not laughing; his face was serious, almost strict, and he was now looking in my direction with a slight frown. I looked away from him and back to Bryan, who was smirking petulantly at me.

"Are you talking to me?" I questioned as I narrowed my eyes.

"I closed my hands into fists, trying futilely to control my anger.

The tension that had built up was clear, practically palpable, everyone's attention was on the two of us, and every time I saw the amusement in the eyes of John's imbecile friends, the more I predicted that I would lose my mind completely.

"I don't remember working for you. If you are hungry, go get something yourself, neither I nor my mother are paid to serve you. The only person who has the right to give orders here is John," I said, pointing my finger right in the middle of Bryan's face, who laughed sarcastically.

"Who do you think you are to tell me what I should or shouldn't do, cutie?" he tried to touch my face and was promptly stopped by my hand that abruptly pushed his.

"Bryan, that's enough!" John scolded him in a harsh tone of voice. He got up irritated from the lounger and walked towards us.

"And who do you" I stressed "think you are? You don't touch me," I warned.

"I remember a time when you almost begged me to touch you," Bryan moved closer to my ear and whispered in a sordid tone so that only I could hear him.

I no longer possessed control of my movements or actions, fury ruled over me and the palm of my hand hit the face of the man in front of me, causing a loud pop to sound and a burning sensation to take over where it came in contact with his skin. He staggered backwards with his hand resting on the area where the slap had been struck, looking at me indignantly. Milliseconds later John had already located himself where we were, shoving Bryan by the shoulders to get him to move away.

"Dude, stop acting like a little kid! How old are you?" he warned, his voice, always deep, was altered. I looked at him somewhat surprised by his reaction, I wasn't expecting him to mess around, let alone get his friend's attention.

"I was just playing with her!" Bryan retorted, removing his hand from his face and I could see the mark of my fingers on his cheek. I almost smiled at that. Cassie looked at the situation dumbfounded, as did the others. She came over and pulled Bryan back into the pool, not without first giving me a disapproving look.

"Can someone explain to me what just happened here?" Mistress Kyara made herself present, not looking happy at all. I immediately froze "Helena, did you just slap a guest?" she looked at me indignantly.

"No, ma'am. It wasn't the..." I began, gesturing in utter distress.

"I don't care what it was like! My anger only grew as Mrs. Carter spoke. It was so unfair.

I was ready to fight back, however, I remembered that I couldn't hurt my mother and her job, much less be kicked out of "our" house.

"Mom, it wasn't her fault" John interjected "let it go, I'll handle it.

"Are you serious? She just beat up a friend of yours! I alternated my gaze between mother and son, not knowing how to act.

"I know, but I told you I can handle it," he countered, resolute.

"Helena, come with me" Mrs. Carter ignored her son and ordered, giving me a superior look before walking towards her house.

I took a deep breath before following her, however, I was stopped when I felt John's hands gently touch my wrist, curbing my steps. I stopped walking and faced him, finding his determined and understanding face reassuring.

"Fine, if I don't go with her it will be worse. I assume what I did, you don't need to get involved in this" I explained, trying to sound calm "your friends and your girlfriend are watching, I think you should go back" I informed him and he turned slightly, seeing that everyone was staring at us.

Bryan was now sitting on the lounge chair later occupied by John and Cassie and watched us with a frown of dissatisfaction. Cassie, though evidently annoyed, just watched with crossed arms, not moving from her seat. By now Mrs. Carter was getting further and further away, not even noticing that I wasn't following her.

"Helena, go home quietly. I saw what happened here, the friend is mine, I'll take it upon myself to talk to her" indicated Mrs. Kyara with her head. Once again her speech sounded determined, transmitting firmness through her thoughtful look.

"If I don't go, my mother will be the one to listen," I replied.

"She won't, stay calm. You can go."

I let out a tired sigh and nodded, not having much to do and hoping that the consequences of all this wouldn't take on unpleasant proportions.

"Thank you, you really didn't have to do that," I smiled gratefully and noted that this was the second time I had thanked him in less than a week. John just shook his head as if he had done nothing at all.

I headed home extremely discouraged and frustrated, cursing Bryan for ruining my good mood and creating all this unnecessary drama when all he should be doing is pretending I don't exist, as he had done so many other times. I threw my purse in a corner of the room and jumped on the sofa, closing my eyes and feeling my body relax, although my head was torturing me with an unpleasant pain. Suddenly I remembered the day Bryan had spoken to me for the first time. FLASHBACK I stared exhausted at the third page of math exercises, feeling my wrist aching from writing, writing down, and erasing. I was sitting at a small table that I had placed on the veranda so that studying on hot days would be more pleasant. I had spent the whole afternoon studying, the last year of high school was extremely hard and I did my best to absorb all the subjects, since all I wanted was to go to college the following year. I rested my head on one of my hands and sighed, watching the night fall. "I heard someon

John's POV I felt extremely out of patience. What was supposed to be a pleasant day in the company of my friends had turned into a stress that could have - and should have - been avoided, if not for Bryan and his childishness. Talking to Helena that way was despicable, she had become unstructured and I was bothered by the sorrow on her features while listening to my friend's provocations, so I decided to intervene, although it was too late considering the slap the girl gave him. To be honest, I was amazed at her courage in speaking so confidently. I usually saw Bryan's provocations directed at her, and she always fought back with dignity, and all I did was observe her behavior in front of my friend's immature behavior - behavior that I disapproved of completely - I had thought of reprimanding him several times, however, Helena usually took the reins of the situation and defended herself very well, it was interesting to know that a girl who seemed so serene had such a sharp tongue.

Helena's POVIt was after three o'clock in the morning, I could feel my feet hurting from the high heels, and the atmosphere made me uncomfortable because of some of the dirty looks I was getting. The party was great, I couldn't deny that, but it wasn't my world. All that luxury was surreal! Really, who buys a triplex to live alone? I would never understand, but who am I to argue, right? Sophie was chatting with a guy and it was noticeable that they were flirting with each other, so I signaled to her that I would take a walk with the obvious intention of leaving the two of them alone. I walked around the stunning apartment, contemplating all the refinement of the place, from the furniture that was certainly worth millions, to an extensive glass wall. I stopped there admiring the enchanting landscape of the city at dawn, marveling at the lights forming small bright spots seen from up here."Did you see it? I think Carter and Cassie had a fight" I heard the instant two girls approach

Silence settled over the room and I glanced over at him, seeing that he, like me, was gazing at the view lost in thought. I don't know how long we remained like this, but the stillness was broken by the sound of his cell phone ringing. Still with a little difficulty, he took the phone from his pants pocket and answered without even seeing who it was."Hello? Hello?" he repeated. Seeing that he was not answered, he stared at the cell phone screen and frowned, putting it away soon after. The silence was again present, and although it was not at all uncomfortable, it still made me uneasy."I know it's none of my business, but I don't think it's a good idea for you to drive home," he turned his attention away from the view ahead and stared at me, his gaze meeting mine, which stared back at him. The half-light illuminated his face, and his opaque eyes seemed to want to unravel mine through the absence of sound. For a few moments I felt disconcerted, his curious and silent analysis made so

"Helena, I can't take it anymore!" Sophie exclaimed, resting her head on top of the numerous sheets scattered across the desk. It was about five o'clock in the afternoon and we were working on our senior thesis project.I had had enough sleep, unlike the girl in front of me, who was the personification of disaster. After a restless night with Adrian, he took her home and, according to her, she had slept for only three hours, then came to get her car and bring my things that were at his place. Taking advantage of this, we decided to advance some topics of our project. Sure enough, we lost a good few hours before actually starting it, since I made her tell me - almost - everything about the previous night. And so did she.And when I say also, it is because she made me talk about my late-night companion: John Carter."Staying up all night having fun with the party cat, you can handle that, can't you?" I gave her a mischievous look, and she returned it with her middle finger."Let's not m

John's POVDuring my childhood, I loved watching action movies and seeing the characters run, fight, and make the most unbelievable escapes. I loved the way the twists and turns occurred, I saw the villains' schemes and the victory of the good guys, and although I didn't understand much, I found it all very interesting. Now, as an adult, I realize that nothing is as wonderful as it seems. Since the moment I took over the Zummarck case, I have been receiving strange calls from a private number, and they happen at various times of the day. The last one occurred in the early hours of the morning. I wasn't sure if I was just paranoid, but as I was in the car with Helena, I had the impression of seeing a motorcycle a little behind us. I stared intently at my cell phone screen, pondering the reasons why someone would spy on me, already having an idea.I would wait for the next move of whoever it was and take the appropriate measures for this type of situation. No one could frighten me. I

John’s POVDinner night had arrived and my mood was terrible. My parents, Cassie's parents, and the two of us were seated at an abundant table, and the atmosphere was filled with the most explicit sucking and kissing. This kind of situation was commonplace, but that night it was out of bounds. The subject of "engagement" had been brought up countless times, and now my mother and my girlfriend's mother were excitedly showing a wedding dress magazine to Cassie, who looked as uncomfortable as I was. "Okay, that's enough. You're going to scare her," I forced a smile and pulled her close to me, who almost celebrated with relief."Imagine that, son. We were just looking. I have to say, Cassie, you would look magnificent in a Mauro Adami, dear," my mother said, smiling vainly. "That would be in great taste, we should certainly arrange that when the time comes," my girlfriend's father complemented. I took my champagne in one gulp, receiving a scolding look from my father and even Cassie.

I turned and faced them, impatience expressed on my face."I just wanted to know something.... "I spun on my heel, facing them again. "How old do you think I am? You want to decide when I'm going to get married, what it's going to be like, what I'm going to do... That's it!" I exclaimed. I felt another twinge of pain in my head. Benedict sprang up in front of me and I gave a start, bringing my attention to the German Shepherd sitting with his tail wagging frantically. I saw that the sash was no longer on his paw and smiled at him."Good boy, you have recovered nicely! "I stroked behind his arched ears.An extremely familiar scent invaded my sense of smell and I looked up only to confirm the veracity of such a characteristic aroma. John stopped in front of me and I quickly tried to wipe the traces of weeping from my face that surely gave away my tears. He moved closer and I cut off eye contact, focus

It was all so unbelievable, I had never even considered the possibility that one day I would be in the situation I was in: confused about getting involved with John beyond what could be considered normal, if you keep in mind the fact that he had always seemed unattainable to me. I didn't know whether to enjoy the moment, or rationalize about the problems that this unusual involvement would bring. I hardly knew if I could risk calling...this involvement. As much as it hurt to admit, Bryan was right. John had just gotten out of a long relationship, and although I did not know what had occurred for the breakup to take place, I knew that getting rid of the fragments of a relationship was not usually that easy. A few minutes later, John reappeared in the room with damp hair, and the unmistakable scent of his perfume wafted into the room before he had even finished coming down the stairs as he shook out his newly wet hair. He raised his eyes and found me staring like a perfect

"He added visibly stunned, releasing my thighs and helping me down from his lap.The feeling of incompleteness hit me full force and I was thankful that John was still supporting me, for my wobbly legs were not enough to support my trembling body, which was extremely vulnerable to the touch of the man, who was staring at me seriously. I withdrew my hands from the back of his neck and he turned away, walking to the door.I ran my trembling hands over my face with my heart racing to the point that I forced myself to breathe in and out several times in order to calm him at least a little, not believing what was happening. What was about to happen. "And what would that context be, John?" I asked, forcing naivety. He finished his cigarette and left it in an ashtray nearby, all in the utmost tranquility. He turned his shameless eyes to my cynically innocent figure and ran them through mine to the point of sparking. A strong gust of wind hit us, and I cringed, though I felt warm inside. John stood up without saying a word and nodded for me to follow him; I did so. He gave me room to pass first, and then walked into the room, closing the window. I was already feeling like a complete jerk for playing his game, but when his presence was felt just behind me, a warning bell sounded that this was not going to be left out in the open like the situations between John and me used to be."I'm not sure I'm good at explaining. "Good afternoon. As I expected, John made an expression of not believing a word I said."You're greener than this plant, Helena. You're greener than that plant, Helena," he said, referring to the fern located near the barbecue grill. He stood up, and I stopped myself from biting my lip at seeing it all revealed like that, just after waking up. His pants were just a few fingers below his waist, leaving the bar of his black underwear showing as if it were an underwear commercial or one of those mindless advertisements for imported perfumes, in which the beautiful people only play the role of embellishing the scene, which, to my mind, made no sense at all."I'm fine," I remembered saying when I saw him a few ste
