CHAPTER TWO

HUNTER’S POV

She finally fell asleep after failing to fight the effect of the sedatives I’d given her after eating, her eyelashes warping her soft cheeks. No one ever ran away from Rowan and whatever made her run, knowing the imminent danger she was placing on her head, had to be something really worth losing her life over. But what could it be? The question was gnawing at me more than I cared.

“What are you hiding little wolf?” I muttered under my breath knowing she could not really hear me.

I glanced at her sleeping face, sighed then walked outside to watch the sun dip in the horizon. The orange streaks decorating the horizon were the only glorious sight in this goddamn life. I sat on the small dry tree stump overlooking the expansive area. Watching sunset was the only good thing I could actually bring myself to do, apart from training, riding my motorbike and working.

“Stop,” A piercing scream rented the quiet evening air.

In a heartbeat I was inside the room, beside the bed. Her eyes were still tightly shut but her temperature had shot up, her fingers pulling on the white sheet on the bed. Her fingers tips began to change into claws, her body shuddering with soft sobs as she clawed desperately on the mattress. Tears fell fast from the edges of her eyes onto the fluffy pillow. Hmm…The effects of the wolf lichen had to be wearing off if she could turn. What was it about her that made an alpha as powerful as Rowan have to give her wolf lichen?

“Please Rowan. Stop! You are hurting me,” She was definitely having a nightmare but I was not going to have her rip apart that mattress. Hell! I only bought it last week and money was not a luxury to me. When you are constantly on the run, never staying in the same place for too long, money becomes a commodity you can’t afford to lose.

Using all my strength, I pinned her against the bed, ignoring the rush of heat inside my body. She tried prying off my grip but I was stronger than her, or so I thought until her efforts grew relentless.

“Dammit!” I cussed. Her wolf was awakening inside her and clearly at the worst possible time. Fuck it!

Just when I thought I would have to forcefully awaken her, her eyes flew open. The green in them was replaced by the lightest shade of blue, the unique feature of Blood Pack, Maddison’s birth pack. I could not afford to have her turn right in my house. Trust me, I had a very good inkling on what a werewolf could do to a house; especially when they are disoriented.  It took less than a minute and an immense amount of straining before her eyes returned to their normal green. Even still, she looked shaken and scared. Her eyes darted around the room in panic, only sighing in relief after realizing I was the only one around.

“I really need to get away, “She muttered in determination.

“Your wound is not properly healed yet,” little, stubborn wolf. Just what did I do to find myself in this position? Of all these days, why did I have to go out last night? I wouldn’t be caught in this nightmare if I’d remained indoors.

“You really don’t get it, I need to get away before Rowan finds me,” She gritted her teeth but it was not just her patience wearing out. I was so damn close to losing my mind.

“Just stay fucking put! You had a fucking nightmare and you were screaming Rowan’s name, so if you think for one moment I’m going to let you go just like that with a raw wound, then you are mistaken,” I thundered, eyes blazing.

She started back, panic gripping her as she shifted uneasily on the bed. Dammit! I hated having to shout at anyone but her stubbornness was making me do all that.

“I’m not sure whether you think you can protect me or you are just buying my time for some unknown agenda,” Suspicion was evident in her irises. That was a little unfair. I saved her from those men.

“Trust me, I don’t really give a fuck what happens to you but at least I don’t want to die with an unclean conscious. If I let you out of that door and that wound gets infected then you die, who the fuck do you think will have to live with that for the rest of their life?” Rage burned through me like an inferno.

Her eyes softened as she sighed. I could actually hear the thoughts running in her brain but I did not want to know what they were, so I blocked her off. If there is one thing I’d learnt over the years; its much easier to keep people at bay. If you let them in; if you let their thoughts in, you’d lose your mind faster than you could blink. They would consume your sanity.

“Fine but once this wound heals, I’m out of here,” She stepped off the bed after yanking the covers off her lithe body.

My eyes unwillingly wandered over her skin, lust burning through me at the sight of her flawless layers of creamy skin. As if she had just realized she had no clothes on, her palms cover her bust as she shifted uncomfortably on her legs.

“Turn around please,” Her meek voice had me whipping round, keeping my back on her.

The image of her perfect body however was a taunting image in my brain. Perfect round tits that formed a seductive cleavage under the bra to tease my appetite, molded over a well-rounded figure. And I had my vampire side to blame for this; for feeling everything else a thousand times over. I drew in a huge breath, eyes shut to ease the sudden hunger flowing through each of my bones. Fuck! What was wrong with me? You know what? It was probably because I hadn’t been with a woman in a really long time. There could not be another plausible explanation.

“You can turn around now,” She said quietly.

CHAPTER FIVEWe’d stopped for gas at least twice before reaching the outskirts of Crest Falls in the early morning hours. From what I’d gathered, Hunter wasn’t much of a talker. Whether it was due to paranoia or just a deeply ingrained habit, I couldn’t be sure.“Fancy a cup of coffee, Maddison?” he asked, pulling into the parking lot of a small, almost deserted diner. Just as quickly, his expression shifted. His face paled as he mumbled, “Unless... pregnant women shouldn’t drink coffee. I don’t know jack about the do’s and don’ts of pregnancy.”The panicked look on his face was enough to make me crack a small smile as I pulled off my helmet.“I don’t mind a cup,” I replied, leading the way inside. The place had a quiet, sleepy atmosphere, like it was caught in a time warp. She hadn’t stopped watching me since Hunter left, and her stare felt like it could peel away layers of secrets I wasn’t ready to reveal.“Good décor,” I said impulsively, trying to break the silence, though the words felt hollow.“My daughter’s idea,” Claire replied, her voice softening with a note of pride. “She’s an interior designer in Illinois.”For a fleeting second, the warmth in her tone hit something deep within me.
