CHAPTER 4

Its quite a mad quest if you think about it but then again, I hadn’t experienced an ounce of normality for ages. My life was beginning to be so good at growing chaotic each day and the only thing that proved to be the only shining light in my otherwise darkened life, was the baby growing in my womb.

The wind hit my face but I doubted it was as hard as the wind on Hunter’s face. We hadn’t exchanged a word since he began driving almost an hour ago and I’m certainly very grateful for that. I sincerely could not stand being caught in a conversation right now. Instead, I let my brain think of the one man who had single-handedly ruined my life and that the day he’d come into my life.

FLASHBACK

The chill evening air in River Moon town-home to the best pack in the city of Rosewood and consequently my pack-brushed my dark hair but that did not bother me even for a second. I took in a harsh load of breath, my frail arms hanging around my lithe body shakily. I stole a quick glance at my father, the mighty Alpha of the Blood Pack, one known for its ferocious , well-trained sentinels and also, my home since I graced this earth. The old man looked like he could collapse any minute if Rowan, the ruthless Alpha of White Moon pack, stared at him a moment longer. Rowan had ambushed the kingdom at the wee hours of the morning, killing more than half the sentinels since they were unprepared for such a well-cordinated attack and that had forced my father to concede defeat. We were no match to Rowan but my father did not want to go down without a fight and so we’d lost at least half of the sentinels.

I wanted to reach out, pat my father’s shoulder just to reassure him everything was alright but I was still very angry at him. No angry was an understatement. I was raving mad. My gaze snapped at Rowan, watching his every move. He eventually moved, slowly making his way towards me in short, calculated steps.

An air of command whirled around his silhouette frame like he ruled the whole damn world. His face remained a blanket of blankness but news of his cruelty had preceded him by far. He was the ferocious Alpha, conquering every pack he could lay his hands on and unortunatly the packs in my town had unfortunately had been no exception. Until this morning, I had been a free spirit, living the life of any teenage daughter of a revered Alpha. He stopped in front of me as I struggled to breathe normally. Shaken, I averted my gaze to the ground, suddenly finding interest on the patch of green near my feet. I felt his cold fingers ice their way from my right cheek, brushing my right jaw before he tilted my chin up to face him but I was a trembling mess inside and so I let my eyes squeeze shut. Worset part about all this? Coiled deep down, was the undenibale truth. I felt it. Leia felt it too. He was our mate. That undeniable, strong pull taunted me from every nerve and there was nothing I could do to stop it.

“Look at me, “He ordered softly but my eyes remain shut.

“I said, look at me!” His voice thundered shaking me up. I snapped my eyes open staring at his cold brown ones. He leaned in, his jaw brushing my cheek ever so delicately as he whispers, “Good because you will be seeing this face until the moment you draw your last breath,”

More tremors chilled down my spine as I tried not to tremble visibly. He strode away, a satisfactory smirk on his lips.

“It looks like my bride and I are leaving now,” the order resounded in the pin-drop silence outside the mansion I’d called home for all eighteen years of my life. Tears silently burned the narrow slits of my eyes, wondering how fate could suddenly be so cruel to me. Had the goddess forsaken us when we needed her the most? Or was this some sort of punishment she was bequathing me? Perhaps due to some transgretation I could have done in my past life?

“But she is only eighteen years old. Shouldn’t you wait till she is a little older?” My father tried but one glare from Rowan is enough to shut him up. I was the token mate, offered to help keep peace among what was left of our town. In addition, my father was to supply twenty thousand dollars to him every month as a way to make certain of Rowan keeping my live.

Dread was the only thing filling my mind as it dawned on me ever so harshly how my life had turned out. Just why could I not have been born a normal person with a normal life? If I were not of the royal wolf blood, I would have run away from this nightmare unfolding before me. If I had been someone else; someone of no importnace, he would have perhaps not looked twice at me. He would disregarded my mere existence.

My mother quickly whisked me inside the house to my room. My whole body was numb with fear as I watched her rushing about my room, pushing neatly arranged clothes in the two huge gold plated suitcases with the help of our househelp Rita. I couldn’t stop shaking even for a minute. I gripped my mum’s arm, staring at her eyes that were of the deepest shade of brown just like mine.

“Mother, please do not let him take me away,” I pleaded with her and for a moment her eyes softened.

“You know I cannot. I’m nothing but a Luna only by name. I may behold such a prestigious title but I’m not accorded any power whatsoever. If it were in my jurisdiction, I would not let that monster come any closer to you,” That was the thing about being a Luna. You were just a pretty face to make the Alpha look and feel good. Almost like people would perceive an expensive gem.

And that was the beginning of the six years of torture that culminated into the nightmare called my life.

END OF FLASHBACK

If I could go back in time, I would have run out of the place as fast as I could. I would have not have given two single shits if he found me after. At least I would have tried to save myself.

Whether it was due to paranoia or just a deeply ingrained habit, I couldn’t be sure.“Fancy a cup of coffee, Maddison?” he asked, pulling into the parking lot of a small, almost deserted diner. Just as quickly, his expression shifted. His face paled as he mumbled, “Unless... pregnant women shouldn’t drink coffee. I don’t know jack about the do’s and don’ts of pregnancy.”The panicked look on his face was enough to make me crack a small smile as I pulled off my helmet.“I don’t mind a cup,” I replied, leading the way inside. The place had a quiet, sleepy atmosphere, like it was caught in a time warp.
