MARCELLAS POV
We stayed hidden behind the sofa, at this point it was just Uncle Tee and Alejandro against the dozen men firing their guns at us. I would have counted my self as part but I had no knowledge about firearms even though I was raised in a mafia house. Uncle Tee and Alejandro exchanged a nod in unison then got up simultaneously, firing their guns across the room. “Go, go, go,” Uncle Tee yelled over the loud gun sounds. “Be ready to jump” Alejandro said dragging me with him. “Huh” I replied just as we jumped off the building through the shattered glass window into the ocean down below. It took a while for my lungs to adjust to the new surface area, nonetheless , I pushed up to the surface of the water quite easily. I couldn’t see my brother anywhere at the surface neither could I remember seeing Uncle Tee jump behind us. My brother was a good swimmer like myself hence I expected him to show up on the water surface any moment. I scanned the water surface one more time and couldn’t see Alejandro, and where we had landed in the water was not too far from shore meaning, it wasn’t that deep for him to have difficulty swimming up. I began getting worried. “Alejandro?” I called out, no response. A figure stood at the edge of the window where we had just jumped off. I couldn’t see his face clearly but his figure looked like Zak. “Alejandro” I called out again and when there was no response I took in a deep breath and dived into the water. I tried to keep my eyes open as I scanned the ocean for my brother. I came up a few seconds later when I couldn’t find him. I took another breath and dived towards a different direction, then I saw blood. I swam quickly towards it, Alejandro lay against a rock, his head bleeding profusely. I yanked him up with all my strength, then let out the breath I was holding before swimming towards the shore, dragging my brother along. I immediately pounced on his chest once we were on dry land. I pumped as had as I could and breathing into his mouth after every few compressions. My prayer was a silent and simple one. ‘Don’t die on me Alejandro’ There was no sign of life, his eyes remained shut and his head kept bleeding. I removed my already wet T shirt realizing my own wound was bleeding mildly too, I nervously tucked it under his head and resumed pumping his chest my frustration growing deeper with each compression. “Fucking breathe” I yelled in frustration striking him across the face, tears rolled down my cheeks as my brother suddenly started coughing extensively. I released a huge sigh of relief as Alejandro continued coughing. “Lets get.” Coughs “out” coughs “of here” he managed to say getting up abruptly but falling back down almost instantly. “Take it easy” I said to him and offered my shoulder as support. “Keep pressure on the wound” I added as we got to the car. I assisted Alejandro into the back seat then set myself before the wheel. “What are you waiting for, lets go” Alejandro said “Uncle Tee” I replied looking around hoping he made it out. “Forget it man, he couldn’t have made it” “No, I know Uncle Tee, he always survives” I said hopefully. “Staying here will get us killed, drive Marcella” “He is going to make it” I said again, tapping on the wheel anxiously. “Fuck it man , move the damn car” my brother yelled impatiently. “Im not leaving without him” I insisted, my hope diminishing slightly. “Fuuuuuccckkkkk!” He screamed in frustration . There was still no sign of Uncle Tee and I knew my brother was right. We had to leave. Guilt engulfed me as I started the car and drove away, leaving my uncle to his fate. “What took so long” father asked anxiously as soon as we entered the room. “ where is Tyrone” he asked wheeling his chair towards us as fast as he could. “ Bring a first aid kit” I said to a maid that passed by. “Yes ma’am “ she replied and walked out “Why is no one fucking talking to me, what the hell happened and where the fuck is my brother!” Neither of us spoke, I flinched at the mild pain from my almost healed wound. Alejandro also fidgeted with his wound, he looked clearly scared of father. “We don’t know” I managed to say. “You don’t know what?” Father asked with a frown. “It was a trap, we were ambushed” I replied. “Trap? How” Dad asked even more confused. “Zak betrayed us, the Mexican mafia was in hiding, awaiting our arrival” “Shit.” Dad exclaimed, slamming his fist in his wheelchair. “I told you Salvador’s men will surely come after us” Alejandro added causing me to realize what could have actually happened. I shivered at the thought of this attack being my fault. My father’s business and the entire family was endangered because I killed one man. Staying with Antonio made me feel safe and I didn’t realize Salvadors men were still on the search for me. The realization weakened my knees as I sunk slowly into the sofa behind me. “You mean all this is my fault?” I asked as tears flooded my eyes. “All those men died because of me?” “No honey, you cant blame your self “ mother said from behind me. “But its all my fault” I said slowly. She came up from behind me and gathered me in her arms as my tears flowed uncontrollably. “You think you have the right to cry?” Father said causing me to turn my head to his direction. “ you never listen!, you are selfish!, your actions have cost this family dearly , and all you do is sit there and cry?” “Take it easy Giovanni” mom pleaded. “Take it easy? You think life gets any easier?” He asked no one in particular. I saw the maid walk in with the first aid kit and started cleaning my brothers wound, it looked pretty shallow thankfully. “ You have to grow up Marcella” father continued, drawing my attention back to him. “Life is not a Disney movie. Hard and painful decisions have to me made, sacrifices that drain your very soul have to be made, yet. You.have. To. Do it” he said slamming his chair with every word. The room was quiet, no one dared speak. I sniffled quietly. “Your stubbornness has caused me millions of dollars, dozens of trusted men, and now my brother, your Uncle!” He said shaking his head. “How much more sacrifices do I have to make to atone for your errors, while you simply sit and cry” “I’m sorry papa, I had no idea” I pleaded. “Get the fuck of my face” he yelled. I got up with a start. “And you too” he said to my brother “Useless, you are all useless” He screamed pushing down the tray of win glasses sitting on the table beside him. I kept a straight head as I walked upstairs, hoping the ground opened up and swallowed me.MARCELLA’S POVFive days had passed, and there was no sign of Uncle Tee, no word from the Mexican mafia either. The awful silence around the manor was painful and tiring, no one had visited the manor the entire week not even fathers down-liners.El Russo himself had spent most of his time sitting on the balcony upstairs staring into space. Occasionally I would see him deeply lost in thoughts, he was clearly grieving his brother but tried not to look weak before us.This morning, one of the guards had informed me that, father wanted me at the club tonight. I hadn’t stepped foot there in almost eight years but this wasn’t the time to get on father’s nerves.I was nervous as the club wasn’t a place that resonated with my soul. By the time evening came, I was already dressed and ready for the club and by eleven pm, father and I had arrived. The smell of smoke and hard liquor quickly filled my nostrils, I wiggled my nose briefly allowing it to adjust to the new smell. I knew I looked beautiful; I could feel the heavy make up on my face as I struggled to hold back the drop of tear that had been meaning to fall. As I stood in-front of Michael and the priest, I eagerly scanned the nearly empty room, my heart pounding loudly in my chest, hoping secretly that my parents or at least my brother would be present on my wedding day. I could feel Michael’s heavy gaze on me as my feet grew colder.I tried to clear my throat to get rid of the huge lump I could feel forming from disappointment and then opened my mouth to answer the priest’s question, but before I could form any words, the huge gates of the church flung open and about seven heavily armed men barged into the room.“Everybody down” One of them ordered.I went down immediately with Michael hovering over me to form a protective shield. The priest hid behind the pulpit and the few people in the auditorium mostly from Michael’s family and friends group quickly hid under their chairs. I could hear silen
The rest of the week went by quickly. My dad did everything to avoid seeing me since I kept trying to convince him to change his mind about my marriage to Salvador. My mother on the other hand seemed rather excited as she spent the whole week planning for the wedding, setting up our large living room as the venue and even ordering a wedding cake. The presence of heavily armed men from my father’s mafia guarded my door, ensuring I didn’t attempt another escape. I only caught a glimpse of what was going on outside my room under strict supervision as ordered by dad.The hairstylist shook me into reality “you’re all set to go ma’am” she informed me. I looked into the mirror and gave my reflection a weak smile then nodded at the stylist.I sluggishly got off the chair and walked out of my room, the train of my wedding gown following loosely. At the top of the stairs, I made a stop and looked around the room, all eyes were up and watching me, I didn’t expect this much people, most of whom I
The sun scorched so hard against my skin; my throat was dry from thirst. I wanted to stop for a brief moment as my legs could no longer keep moving, but a few meters behind me was Salvador’s men. I leaned against a huge tree for a few seconds trying to catch my breath then I heard one of them order from afar, “Search over there”I had to keep going, but immediately I moved, I felt the sharp end of a broken tree branch slice through my flesh. I covered my mouth with both hands to hold back the scream of pain. I looked down at the fresh red meat exposed on my thighs bleeding profusely. I couldn’t stop, I kept running through the bush, tree branches and leaves slapping my face as I maneuvered my way up the hill. I heard the search party drawing nearer, they seemed to be following the trail of blood from my wound that had stained the leaves behind me.I tore off a loose end of my already torn dress and tied the wound as hard as I could and when I raised my head, I could see a road in vie
It had been a week since I fled from Salvador’s men. Antonio and his men have been nothing but good to me. Alberta took care of my wound and it healed neatly, she however tried to avoid me most of the time. Whenever Antonio went out and I was alone with her, I tried to engage her in conversations to find out more about Antonio but she simply says “I’m not allowed to talk about this”I took a stroll down the river bank out of boredom. The sun reflecting sharply on the river surface, inviting me for a swim. I fetched a handful of the water and washed my face, it was warm so I decided to swim. I took off my blouse and pulled down my pants, then did some form of stretches to straighten my bones before I dived into the water. My parents had ensured I took swimming lessons since I was a baby making me love the feel of water on my skin always. Talking of parents, I wondered how they were doing, if they noticed I was gone, if they missed me or if my dad was looking for me, were his men looki
ANTONIO’S POVI don’t know how long it had been, a couple of minutes maybe, but I knew she was anxiously waiting. I looked at Alvarez wondering what news he had that couldn’t wait.I had asked Marcella to lay in bed, but just when I was about to go to her, my emergency phone vibrated in my pocket. After I had jumped into the river earlier to save her with the phone in my pocket, I was too upset and forgot to check on the phone, I didn’t expect it to still function. But when the device vibrated I knew I had to rush out.“Bravta, take a look at this” Alvarez finally spoke showing me his phone screen. “What is this” I asked snapping the phone from him. A picture of Marcella sat on the screen and under it the words Marked for $ninety million -Dead or Alive was boldly inscribed. My heart begun to race. I got up with a start, my fingers coiled tightly around the mobile device channeling all my anger to it. “Fuck” I exclaimed throwing the phone at the wall.To be marked in the mafia dark w
MARCELLAS POV“Hello? Mom?” I called through the phone, I could hear the relief and joy in her voice as she responded.“Baby, where are you my love”“I can’t tell you mom, but I’m safe and…” “Are you out of your mind?” Antonio yelled yanking the phone from my hands.“What the hell!” I yelled back“I told you no fucking phone calls without my knowledge. Why the hell will you do that?”“I needed to call my mom, its being weeks and she’s probably crying herself to death”“I don’t give a fuck about that Marcella. Do you realize what you have just done?” He questioned, slamming the phone on the table just as Alberta walked in.“Forgive me sir I must have left the phone unattended.” Alberta apologized.“This not your fault Alberta, just stay out of it.” he assured her“…and it’s my fault?” I questioned “It’s my fault I can’t choose whom to marry? It’s my fault I have to hide even from my own parents? It’s my fucking fault my life is miserable now?” “Don’t be pathetic, you agreed to the t
ANTONIOS POVI squeezed Marcella’s cold hands tightly with my left hand while my right-hand kept pressure on her wound. The fast-oozingblood from the hollow space left by the bullet on her abdomen had already soaked two shirts. As she lay on the table in my dining area, I anxiously awaited the arrival of Doctor Firestone,a trusted underground medical practitioner Alvarez had secured for situations like this when we first arrived here in Italy.I felt useless as all I could do was say silent prayers hoping she pulls through this. Alvarez, Alejandro and some of my men had gone out to trace the shooter. I had promised to keep Marcellasafe but right here in my home I put her in harms way.Firestone arrived shortly after and went straight to assess the wound on Marcella. He looked more worried than I had expected. I refused to let go of her hands as the little threadypulse I felt was my only assurance she was still alive and she could make it. MARCELLAS POV Dinner was pretty much quiet, no one said anything peculiar. I had expected father to throw more light on this new business deal as the anticipation was killing me, however, I knew not to over step boundaries and ask too many questions. Zak kept busy in his phone only occasionally engaging me in one random conversation or the other. In this brief interaction, I had gathered he was an underground dealer, pretty new in the business but good at what he does. I didn’t grabs what exactly he deals in as he avoided the questions severally. I also learned from our conversation that, he had joined police academy but could not complete his training because he suffered some depression when both his parents died around that time. He however still had a few corrupt connections in the academy that gave him solid police intel relevant for his business. Occasionally when Zak was buried in his phone, Uncle Tee would stretch his neck to peek and when my eyes met his, he gave some ki
MARCELLA’S POV I heard a rattling sound at the front of my door, I didn’t bother to check it out as I knew the door was locked. Before long, Uncle Tee Stepped into my room holding a ball gown and some accessories. “You father demands your presence at the diner party.” He said to me “What party, I don’t know about any party” I informed him. “Well, what I can tell you is, you father just struck a huge business deal with Zak and the party is to celebrate the win, anything beyond that I am not in the position to say” “I am not interested in anything relating to dad’s business, I am not coming” I said simply. “Like you have a choice. You know El Russo does not make suggestions, this is an order.” I shrugged, I understood the consequences of declining my father’s invitation, but I felt unbothered anyways. “Wear this, and look your best” My uncle said laying the gown on the bed beside me and walking away. I ignored the piece of material, but the silver necklace accompanying
MARCELLA’S POV Its been a couple of hours and no one had come in to check on me or offer food, this only confirmed my suspicion, my father was punishing me. The door remained locked and so was my bedroom window, the sky outside was dark with only a few stars sprinkled across it. The lights of the manor lit up the compound giving me a view of a couple of armed men patrolling its parameter.. I entered the bathroom to wash my face and drunk some water from the tap, then an idea struck.A broad smile appeared on my face as I rushed to the closet, I pulled out every piece of cloth, bedspread and any material I could lay hands on. I tied them end to end forming a long row of clothes joined by a tight knot. This was my only hope of escape and I prayed silently that it works. I went back to the bathroom and tied one end of my improvised rope to the window frame, and with my bag hugging my body tightly, I let my self out the window. It was a one story building yet my fear of heights prevented
MARCELLAS POVIt was a little pass midday when I arrived at the Russo Manor,my mother rushed down the stairs to hug me immediately she saw me, I simply waved a hand to dismiss her ensuring my other hand supported my wound. Its been just two days after the shooting and I had decided to pay my father a visit despite Antonio’s fruitless efforts to convince me otherwise.“You betrayed me” I said to my mother, “my abdomen feels like it had just been vacuumed you know why?”“Its not what you think baby” she sobbed“ Because you chose to betray me and put my life in danger.” She made another attempt to advance towards me and stretchedher hand to touch me.“Don’t you dare touch me” I said with a frown."I called you and you told dad my whereabouts, you were supposed to protect me!“ I added."Don’t be too hard on her” Alejandro said patting my shoulder as he joined us in the room. Uncle Tee followed closely behind wheeling dad into the space beside mom. I turned to walk away ignoring his pres
