CHAPTER 65

Kyle King

‘Alright, the results are out, Kyle. I think you should put a smile on your face. Your sperm count has increased over the years. I am not surprised. You kept to the treatments and were consistent with your appointments, even though you stopped after a while.’

I exhaled, like a weight had been lifted off my shoulder. Indeed, that was what just happened. I had held the guilt all these years that I was the reason why Tessa couldn’t give birth, and finally, I felt guiltless. I had recovered along the line. But when?

I asked. ‘When did I fully improve, or should I say recover?’

He looked at the results and said, ‘You recovered four years ago, but it wasn’t as great as now. Why do you ask?’

I shrugged. I didn’t want to bring up Tessa’s name since I noticed he didn’t talk about her.’

‘I am just curious, that’s all. Thank you, doctor. You just helped me solve a big mystery.’

‘You are still going to confront your wife about the fake results?’

I nodded. ‘Of course. I am going to confront her. She lied to my face and needed to know why! If she says nothing is wrong with her body, then she shouldn’t be afraid to run tests. I am going to show her my result and bring it to her during the weekend. She is hiding something, and I must know what it is.’

Doc. Brown smiled and said, ‘I am surprised about your reaction. You seem upset about her tweaking her test results, but you did for five years to Tessa. You are an interesting fellow, friend.’

My heart jumped a bit. He finally said what I didn’t want to hear myself say or think about.

‘ That’s different. I mean, according to you, I was okay during the latter years of our marriage, but she didn’t get pregnant. Ava, on the other hand, is the key to my prayers. I know now that I can get a woman pregnant, but the woman is proving to be a stubborn, disobedient being. I am going to tame her and ensure she fulfills her motherly duties.’

‘Of course. I won’t intervene in your family matters, though. I wish you the best of luck with Ava, and if she refuses to see me, then it’s fine. I am sure she’s okay, but she's not ready for test results or to even have a child. I guess she’s trying to put you off her back.’

I agreed. I believe that was what Ava was trying to do. Get me off her back and continue flaunting her body curves on cover pages, fashion run-aways, and ads. Well, she had it wrong. I was going to focus more on her case until she gave me a child.

‘Thank you, doc. You have said enough, and I respect you for not saying anything in those years. You have shown that you are a good friend. Thank you for that.’

‘It’s alright. I hope to see you on Saturday, then. ‘

‘Sure, thank you. I will be leaving. You have a group of women waiting, or should I say gossip?

He chuckled, ‘You have the three musketeers of the town. I hope they didn’t give you trouble. They always cause something when they are here. I have tried to schedule their appointments, but their husbands are doctors here and my friends, so it’s difficult to do that.’

‘I have met them, and I am not sure if I would like to be around them in this hospital or outside. They gossip a lot and are talkative. I could barely hear my thoughts in the reception as they argued about baking soda. Who argues about baking soda?’

Doc. Brown chuckled, ‘It’s alright. They’re not that bad, but I know how they can be. Enjoy the rest of your day, okay?’

I nodded, giving him a handshake. Doc. Brown was another friend I couldn’t take for granted. He was a helpful and loyal friend. I know the trouble I was putting him into all those years when I begged him not to reveal my situation to Tessa. He did it without hesitation, and that took a lot, honestly.

I returned to the King’s company to catch up with work activities. Due to the tech company, I hadn’t been able to attend meetings, leaving it to my mom. It wasn’t easy running two businesses, especially when your uncle was waiting for you to make a big mistake.

I picked up the first document that needed my signature and review. It was the company’s quarterly financial statement. There were a lot of typing errors. Christine’s trademark. I called her in immediately.

‘What’s the meaning of these errors? Did you not review what you typed before printing them out?’ I asked, slamming the document on the table.’

She shifted back a bit. ‘I am sorry, sir. I was really busy that day and had no time to review the document. I will fix it now.’

I raised my left hand and said, ‘Wait, let me check the other documents to see if you repeated the same mistakes.’

I scanned through them. Errors and approval of payments that were received by my mom What? They were all cash payments, which explained why the accountant didn’t call me.

‘Who authorized these payments to my mom?' I demanded, calculating the figures in my head. Seventy thousand dollars in one week, I was absent from the company. Thankfully, I won’t have to deal with Uncle David since I settled his debts and returned half of the investments he made in the company. He had like fifteen percent shares and no business with the business account.

Christine replied, ‘Your wife approved it. You signed as the second signatory after your marriage, sir.’

I sighed. I had forgotten because I was half drunk that particular day, and Ava had been so sweet to me. I had to remove her before she ruined the company with her excessiveness.

‘Oh, that’s true,’ I replied, pretending to remember. ‘Call the attorney and inform him to remove her as a signatory. I will send an official document stating my reasons and approval, okay?’

She nodded. ‘Can I go now, sir?’

‘No, take these files and retype them. If you can’t do it properly, meet with the junior interns to teach you. If you still make the same mistakes after they have taught you, then you will leave me no choice but to sack you, okay?’

‘I am sorry, sir. It won’t happen ever again, please.’ she begged.

I waved her off. ‘You can leave. I will expect the document in an hour’s time. Don’t be late for your own good, Christine.’

She mumbled a thank you and rushed out.

I felt an envelope pop out of my briefcase. Ava will be receiving a similar treatment once she returns from her fashion show trip.
