CHAPTER 62

Kyle King

‘That’s the result. It says I am okay and you are, so tell your mom to exercise patience. We’ve only been married for two years. I am not in a hurry to get kids, anyway.’ Ava slammed the test results on the table. ‘If she can't exercise patience, then we go for a surrogate. I don’t manufacture babies!’

I picked up the test results. Everything was okay, according to the doctor. The same thing that happened with Tessa was almost repeating itself again. I couldn’t understand why fate was playing tricks on me.

All I wanted was a child and to get Mom off my back. She kept forgetting she had a grandchild already, and each time I reminded her, she claimed the child belonged to Seth’s family but not hers. She wanted a grandchild from me.

Her friendship with Ava’s mom was strained due to her constant reminder that she had cheated. Mum felt that Ava's mum knew Ava couldn’t have children quick like she wanted but didn’t tell her because of the woman’s greed. I tried to intervene, but it only made matters worse.

‘I am sorry about everything, Ava. I just need a child to get my mom off my back and people too. We have been together for two years, and you haven’t shown any signs at all. My mom has to be worried that she didn’t make the wrong decision. You already know how she's behaving towards your mom; do you want her to start with you?’

Ava laughed. ‘You just keep yapping left and right, Kyle. I have told you that if you aren’t ready for a surrogate, then wait for a miracle. I can’t manufacture a baby for you, okay? As for your mom, leave her to me. She won’t dare do anything after everything we have been through together. Did she tell you she was the one who pushed to take all that money back then?’

‘What money?’ I asked, staring confusedly at her.

She grinned, flipping her hair. ‘Your uncle’s money then. She used to complete her nose job payment, and I promised to keep it secret.’

Now, that explains why mom never blinks an eye when I report that case.

‘Yeah, you had to let it out immediately because she’s against you now?’

‘Yes, of course. She’s trying to turn you against me, but she has forgotten that is impossible. She’s indebted to my family, just as I am indebted to your family. Anyway, since you are her mouthpiece, inform her that it’s surrogacy, or she waits. If she can’t do either, she should adopt her child with her loneliness.’ Ava winked, taking the staircase.

I was flinching at the venom in her words. She was beginning to show her true colours, and I was beginning to reconsider my options. I had to speak to my mom. Ava couldn’t be underestimated.

I checked the test results again. Something worried me about it. I couldn’t tell, but did the signature seem like an original now? From a hospital? I checked it again and dropped it. My drowsiness was beginning to affect me.

After a few hours of sleep, I took a long shower and picked some casual outfits—a black jean and a blue shirt. I had some unfinished work at the tech company. I had a design to make for a client’s cafe, and it was due in four days. Uncle David had been an incredible help so far, even though we still held an unspoken disagreement. He still didn’t want me or him to handle the company’s finances. I have given up trying to prove my point. However, he ensured we got our equal shares, salaries, and bonuses. My ratings on the billionaire list in the city had increased. I was number ten, while Uncle David was in the top five. Roberts still enjoyed the first position.

I thought about Tessa and wondered if she had married too. I hope she has. She deserved to be happy. Being married again taught me that I could be a better person and be in charge instead of allowing my mom to intervene in every matter.

Also, I learned that love wasn’t something that could be bought with money. When I look at how Ava cherishes me and holds on even after everything that happened while we were dating and married, I know that is love.

The chauffeur parked in front of Gabrielle’s Cafe. It has become my favourite place for rice, chicken, and salad. I strode in and made an order.

The place was filled as usual, and I noticed someone familiar. Ava? What? She was sitting close to a man I recognised as her father’s client. The anger in me took control immediately. She had informed me earlier that her father had asked her to come over for a business meeting, but the scene right in front of me looked more like a business date.

I walked towards them, getting pissed more as the man touched her face. ‘Ava, what are you doing here?’ I demanded, holding her hand tightly.

She seemed surprised for a second, but she recovered and said, ‘How dare you, Kyle? Can’t you see I am in an important meeting? The one I told you about?’

I glared at her. She had the guts to lie to me. ‘Is this your fatter or new warm body you decided to hook up with?’

She raised her hand to slap me, but I held it.

‘You’re a shameless woman, Ava! After everything I did for you, is this how you repay me? You even have the guts to raise your hands at me? You ungrateful woman!’

‘You’re a fool, Kyle,’ she shook her head. ‘I told you, I had a meeting with my dad, and instead of you exercising patience while I explained the situation, you jumped to a conclusion. Look over your shoulder, Kyle. That’s my dad over there with another client.’

I followed her gaze, and my eyes settled on her dad, who was at the far end of the room. I felt ashamed immediately. I uttered an apology and returned to my seat, but something made me worry. Why hadn’t her dad said anything when he saw my stupid display? He was obviously not surprised by my behaviour.

I squashed the worry. The main thing now was to think of a way to make it up to Ava and hope I hadn’t ruined her business meeting.

She won’t forgive me if that happens.
