Genevieve Tessa Roberts
My body stopped moving but my fingers didn't. I stood there, eyes wide with disbelief and apparent shock as I listened to my husband, Kyle go on and on about a lot of things I was too shocked to decipher. He was talking to Xavier, his childhood best friend who had always been in our lives. I had no idea what to say to that or what to think.
My heart must have died on the spot because I suddenly found it hard to breathe. Grasping the fabric of my coat, I willed myself to take in deep sharp breaths but it was extremely hard. All I felt was pain. Excruciating pain that rendered me numb.
“But, do you really think that you need to do that? Maybe you should take more tests or consider another option. IVF? Surrogacy?” Xavier was talking, asking the mother fucker I called my husband.
“IVF, we have already done and concluded. Nothing's worked out. My mother would have my head at the thought of surrogacy. You know how uptight she is and how she wouldn't bend to the scorns of society’s judgements.” He replied and this time I gasped, slowly.
“Pity.” Xavier scoffed. “But you, my man , will have to start making your own decisions soon. One of these days, you will have to grow a pair and stand your ground with your mother.” He hissed, annoyed.
“If I don't already have one. I see the reasons why my mother is saying so…” He shrugged, half-heartedly like he couldn't be bothered. This time, I visibly clutched my chest in pain.
“I really like Eve though. She brings out the best in you. I always…”
I couldn't stand around and hear any more of it again. So, I clutched my heart tightly and hurried out of the place. Christine rose to her feet when she saw me but I ignored her and got into the elevator. My fingers were shaking as were my lips as a sudden cold overwhelmed me, making my body shake.
I managed to get into my car and once I'd succeeded in putting enough distance between my car and the location of the company, I broke down. I couldn't stop the tears from breaking free from my eyes neither could I stop the wheezing.
I was crying like I had just been hit with a shit storm. Literally, that was what I had just experienced. All my life, I had always thought that I wasn't enough. That I wasn't going to be enough or of value to anyone and that was what had blown up before my eyes.
Unable to stop myself from crying anymore, I grabbed my phone and placed a call to my best friend. My red-haired fireball best friend picked up on the second ring. Sniffing silently, I placed the phone on my ear to talk to her.
“Vee,” I called quietly, trying to hide the tremble of my voice.
“Bitch, where have y—Wait. Are you crying?” she demanded, picking up on what I hadn't said. It was as if her question was the sudden realization I needed to dawn on me that my husband really was going to dump me as the tears wouldn't stop flowing.
“What happened? Who do I need to kill, babe?” she was quick to ask and I imagined her rising to her feet, worry etched on her features while she paced the room.
“Kyle,” I mustered all I could at that moment. I was a mess. I was trying to get the details out to her but I wouldn't stop crying and my spare hand wouldn't stop moving to wipe those tears off.
“Tell me. What has he done? I will take the next flight to your place now and blow his brains out.” She swore and I believed her.
“He-he wants to divorce me, Vee. He doesn't want me anymore because I can't give him a child.” At the end of my statement, I bursted into tears again. For a few seconds, Vera remained quiet but I could sense her growing anger. She was a ticking time bomb always ready to explode.
“Fuck!” she screamed when she finally found her voice. “What the fuck is his problem? Who the hell does he think he is? You are his goddamn wife, not a baby -making machine!” Vera wasn't having it.
I sniffed.
“You know what? I'm coming. I'm taking the next available flight over, okay? I will bring all my fight along because Kyle isn't getting out of this unscathed.” She swore again and this time, my lips twitched into a small smile even though my heart was heavy.
“You don't have to come, Vera. I'm a big girl. I can handle myself.” I tried to smile as I wiped off a stray tear that was cascading down my face. “Besides, Kyle hasn't presented me with the divorce papers yet. He was discussing it with Xavier.” I told her.
“Well, that bastard always follows through with his plans so I guess we could be expecting it.” She hissed while I winced.
“Maybe we can talk it out. Maybe I can fix things with him. Maybe it won't happen after all.” I whispered as I stared down at my tiny baby bump. It wasn't noticeable yet since I had an extremely flat tummy.
Vera said something else to what I said and I responded before I ended the conversation to continue my trip home. When I arrived home, I went straight to the room to get rid of the clothing I had on me and put it into something more comfortable to work around in the kitchen.
“Welcome, madam.” Romina, the house help and cook greeted me when I walked into the kitchen. She had begun to prepare all I would need for dinner tonight as I had asked.
“Thanks, Romina.” I managed a smile at her as I grabbed a canned juice from the fridge which I poured into a glass for myself.
My mother-in-law always demanded nothing less than perfection and for years I'd always tried to give her exactly what she wanted. But it seemed like nothing I did was ever enough for her. She always had something to say which was why I had stopped Romina from making meals whenever we were having her over for dinner or lunch. The last time I hosted dinner, she had complained about the silverware.
The last two times, it was table clothing embroidery.
All those things I thought didn't matter were what she always frowned at. By the time I finished cooking and setting up the table with Romina, it was almost time for dinner. I still needed to take a shower and change into the perfect outfit and so I hurried upstairs to the bathroom. I was still in the shower when I heard Kyle come in. I hesitated for a few minutes in the bathroom before I decided to just step out.
With the towel tied around my body and still dripping wet, I walked into the room. Kyle was by my vanity table, slowly loosening his tie. He didn't turn when I walked in.
“Hi,” I called out to him. He grunted back a reply I didn't hear which made my heart break. Ignoring his lack of enthusiasm, I went ahead to start getting dressed silently. I thought about breaking the news to him then but at the same time, I wondered; would he really divorce me because I couldn't give him a child?
I found it hard to believe that was the husband I had married.
My mother-in-law and sister-in-law arrived just as I finished getting ready and so I hurried downstairs to welcome them. Dahlia, my mother-in-law didn't even spare me a glance as she sidestepped me and headed straight to the dining room.
“Katherine,” I muttered as a form of greeting to Kyle's older sister. She was three years older than Kyle and although she was married, she had happily declared that neither her nor her husband wanted children.
“Genevieve,” she sneered back in return before she brushed past me and went to have her seat.
I exhaled shakily, gripped my dress lightly and went ahead to join them at the table. Dahlia had already taken her seat at her usual place and her eyes were scrutinizing everything that was set on the table. We started to eat and I'd regularly spared them both a glance before Kyle joined us at the table.
“What’s the news, mom?” he asked, angling his head toward his mother in question. Dahlia had mentioned that she had news to share before she demanded that she was coming over to dinner with Katherine.
“Katherine here has something to say,” Dahlia responded as she took a sip of her white wine. She smiled softly at her daughter who in turn responded with a larger smile.
“Ethan and I are expecting a baby.” She announced, grinning widely. I paled on my seat.
“I thought you said that you didn't want children,” Kyle muttered, a bit surprised.
“I still don't but this has happened and we are excited for it.” She grinned even more. Kyle nodded before congratulating her.
“Congratulations, Katherine.” I told her when I finally found my voice but she just shrugged my words off while Dahlia eyed me.
“Kyle,” Dahlia reached out to grab Kyle's fingers. “Linda’s daughter, Ava will be arriving in the states tomorrow. She is one of the best designers we have in the world and she is single.” Dahlia smiled while I froze on the seat, mortified.
Kyle glanced at me for a second like he was truly considering me before he turned back to his mother. “When does she arrive? I can arrange for someone to pick her up.” He offered with a smile while I bristled on the inside.
“Or you could pick her up. She is a very charming lady who has spent some years in France. She is gentle and very kind. She would be perfect.” Dahlia continued to sing her praises. At that point, I could feel the tears coming but I didn't know what to do with them.
I gripped my knife tightly, my head directly facing the table while I blinked more than a few times to push those tears away. The level of disrespect before me. The audacity of my mother-in-law to talk about another woman to my husband right in front of me like I didn't exist. I was as irritated as I was angry.
But still, I sat there and waited.
I waited with bated breath for what my husband had to say. What Kyle had to say to that.
“Text me the time and place she arrives in and I will be there to pick her up. I will clear my schedule for that.” He smiled before he picked up his fork to continue eating.
I had had enough.
I pushed my chair back, wiped my hands clean with the serviette before finishing up the wine in my glass. Kyle stared at me and I looked him back in the eyes, fuming and not hiding my irritation at him. I turned around to walk away when…
“If only you had given us a child all these years, I wouldn't be going through the trouble. But as the barren woman you are, you are bound to be useless.” Dahlia taunted me.
I resisted the urge to turn around and give her the response that she deserved even as tears strolled down my face. Instead, I rubbed my tummy, my reminder of hope and sauntered off because this time, I knew I'd won.
Genevieve Tessa Roberts I laid in bed quietly with tears in my eyes, waiting. Five years that I'd been married to Kyle and I'd never received that level of disrespect. The disrespect was too much. I couldn't take it and the more I thought about it, the more the tears wouldn't stop flowing. I hated to think for even a second that it was because of me that this was happening. I knew exactly the time Dahlia and Katherine finished dinner and left. I also listened as he went straight to his study instead of coming to the room. My heart clenched. The Kyle I had married would have come into the room to check on me. Scratch that, he would have cautioned his mother the moment she opened her mouth and came around to check up on me to see if I was okay. The more I thought about it all, the more it hurt and it got increasingly harder for me to stop the tears. Kyle finally walked into the room at around two in the morning. The room was dark but I watched him move about, shuffling things and arra
GENEVIEVE Tessa ROBERTS I smiled weakly, settling into the chair and texting Vera the latest update. I shuddered a bit thinking about my new status, but I managed to keep myself stable. I couldn't afford to create a scene in the office, and there was also a life growing in me. I gently rubbed my stomach as I took a final glance at my wedding photo and threw it into the bin. `Are you okay, boss?` Gen asked, rushing towards me. I didn't realise I had been crying until Gen dabbed my face, and my eyes followed her gaze to my drenched blouse. I sniffed, standing up, `Yeah... I just received sad news, Gen. I will be returning to my hometown; my family needs me. It was really nice working with you, dear friend.` She hugged me tightly, releasing me when I shuddered. `I am going to miss you, Boss. I do hope all is well at home. I nodded, not wanting to release the news of my divorce. I decided to leave it for Christine, Kyle, or Dahila. I won't be the announcer of my defeat. `I will miss
GENEVIEVE Tessa Roberts I opened my mouth and closed it again. It can't be her. The figure is a young lady with flattened blond hair, a shapely figure, and glossy skin. She had full, perky cheeks and alert eyes. `You don`t remember me? It's Navalie Rhodes. The girl you stole Kyle from in college?` I gasped at the recognition. Ava Rhodes. They had been friends in college until Kyle started showing interest in her, and Ava got jealous. Their friendship fell apart, and they became sworn enemies. At last, Ava had gotten what she wanted—Kyle. The sweet twist of fate! `I remember you, Ava. It's good to see you after so many years. I heard you started a fashion label in France. Are you here to expand the business?` She laughed, taking a full glance at me. `That's none of your business, Mrs. King. Oh, sorry, you are just plain Miss Roberts. You know, it's funny how you fought hard to keep Kyle, and he divorced you in less than a day with nothing to compensate you. That's so pathetic, dear
Kyle KingI watched Tessa and the chauffeur arrange her luggage in the Porsche while my mother taunted her. I should stop my mom, but Tessa was taking care of her by giving her the silent treatment, and it was working well. I smiled a bit and dropped to the bed. I was going to miss Tessa, but not for long. I finally had the woman I had always wanted in my life—Ava—and from our last-night conversations, I know it won't be long before a baby comes into the family.I groaned, trying to suppress the memories of Tessa, but they won. Tessa was that college girl who was popular because of her grades and her family. She had few friends, and one was Ava, whom he had eyes on. He tried to get Ava, but she wasn't ready for a deep relationship, even though she liked him. So, he decided to go for Tessa, who had been crushing on him. She didn't know his family needed an heir, and marriage was the only way he could take the position. He hid from her and made sure he pretended he was in love with her
GENEVIEVE Tessa ROBERTSThe flight home was long and pretty boring because I kept thinking about what Kyle said and the years I invested in his life. Closing the book I was reading, I yawned, and the phone conversation I had with Vera slowly replayed.`I still can't believe that Kyle left you for Ava! That`s a step down, honestly, and I think he should have done better.` Vera said.I sighed, massaging my temples. `Forget it, Vee. I am just glad I am out of that house and coming home. I also have a surprise for you too.`She groaned, `You know I don't like surprises, so please spill the beans right now!``No. You've got to wait until I land in Arizona. I have really missed home and my parents. I hope you didn't tell them?` I asked, remembering the last fight I had with my mom.`I didn`t. I still feel you should have called and informed them about the latest update. I am sure they would forgive you immediately, Tessa. It's been six years already.` she replied sadly. The fight between me
Genevive Tessa Robert`Dad, is there a problem?'I asked. He heaved, `I am just shocked you left the father of your child and came here. That`s a big sacrifice, Tessa.` `It isn`t, Dad. He divorced me before I could even deliver the news to him, and he made me feel like I wasn't worth fighting for. His family never liked me, and he made it clear that I was barren, so I had no use in his household anymore.` `But you should have stayed. I know you agreed to the condition, but you can't raise a child on your own, Tessa.` Dad stretched, staring sternly at me.Mom coughed, clearing her throat a bit. `She's not returning to that household if that's what you are implying, honey. We`re going to support our only daughter to raise our grandchild and also ensure those lowly fools pay for making her life miserable.`I smiled, hugging mom. She always knew how to convince Dad and stand up for what she believed in. Also, the announcement of my pregnancy softened her heart immediately. She had always
Genevive Tessa RobertThe weeks passed quickly, and the next month came. I still hadn't started showing signs of pregnancy, i.e., that bump, but the cravings were there, and the chef, Santiago, was always available to take care of me.Vera had also become a regular visitor, and even after pleading with her to move in, she refused, insisting that my parents were overly nice. She had a feeling something was up. I gave up after that and accepted her visits like a child receiving his first Christmas gift.I stood up from the bed and strolled into the kitchen. Santiago was preparing his special chicken soup and other dishes I knew nothing of but had a good feeling about my baby, and I would be able to take them. `What're you thinking of, Madame?` Santiago asked over a pot of boiling chicken soup. `Nothing really. I`m just wondering how my parents survived staying in this big house after I left. I am sure a lot of times they travelled because, knowing the Roberts, they treasure exotic tri
Genevive Tessa Robert`I didn't mean to disrespect her, mom. I am just reminding her of her place in the family. She might be the elder one, but I am the one who remained and stood by you and Dad.` James replied, gaining the approval of other people on the table apart from my parents.I breathed hard, trying to suppress the anger rising up. I am carrying a child. I don't need this kind of negative feeling, but somebody needs to put James in his place. Thankfully, Dad came to the rescue.Dad raised his right hand, silencing everyone. `James, you`re right, but do I need to remind you about your failure as the company's head of operations? Your exorbitant parties that sucked our profits? The investments you made that made us lose investors and shareholders? If I hadn't sent you that seminar, maybe we would be sleeping on the streets at the moment.`James stuttered, `But, Dad, I apologised for the mistakes and went to the seminar because it was the right thing to do. Also, I don't know wh
Kyle KingFive months laterAfter sorting Avaline’s court case, I officially named Xavier the CFO of Planet O. The board accepted him with no grumblings, and I wasn’t surprised because he had been performing well even in my absence. I also took Mom to London, and we finally had a peaceful conversation with Tessa. Mom apologized for everything she did in the past and present. She also acknowledged the kids as her grandchildren. Tessa had been happy and didn’t hesitate to draw Mom into a hug.We scheduled a dinner with Tessa’s parents to officially declare my intentions. I had married Tessa the wrong way years ago, but now I wanted to do right by her. Her parents had been stiff during the dinner at first, but Tessa was a beautiful instrument in converting them to accommodating individuals. Mom also carried on the conversation by being herself, and before long, she and Mrs. Roberts were laughing like old pals. During a sleepover with kids at my place, Tessa had suggested we move in toge
Geneveive Tessa RobertI took the blanket from Kyle’s quiet housekeeper and covered the twins. I hadn’t planned on sleeping over, over, but the kids had fallen asleep after our third monopoly game. I kissed their cheeks and followed the housekeeper out. Another reason why I hadn't wanted to sleepover was Kyle.He had stirred my feelings with his call conversation on my way here. Lately, I had been struggling with admitting my feelings for him because I was afraid of envisioning a future with him. Would Kyle give me all the happiness I wanted in life? Would he wake up one morning and demand a divorce because I couldn’t give him more children? children? ThereThere was also Dahila. I didn’t want to think about what Vera had insinuated about her always having an ulterior motive for everything she did. I shrugged, entering the living room. I would also have to talk to Kyle about his mom and suggest a truce. If I was going to accept it into my life finally, Dahila and I needed to sort out
Kyle KingPlanning a perfect date was always a nervous activity for me because I had to ensure everything was perfect and tailored to my partner’s taste—in this case, my partner was Tessa, and she deserved to be treated perfectly well. I glanced at the table as the housekeeper helped arrange the dishes properly and set the tablecloths. I glanced at her work and nodded my approval. This was going to be a perfect date. I rushed into the shower, and a few minutes later, I was out. I picked a casual outfit—a Ralph Lauren shirt and black jeans. I ran my comb through my black curls. I mentally noted to check in with a barber across the street to reduce the fullness of my hair. I preferred it to be moderate and looking shabby or rough. After a quick view of my appearance, I strolled out of the room and settled in the living room, waiting for Tessa and the kids. I had wanted to take them out, but Tessa preferred a house date. She also felt it was right; the kids came. They were missing me e
Genevieve Tessa Robert‘My parents still believe I made a wrong mistake introducing Kyle to the kids. They don’t think he has truly changed, and I tried convincing them, but it was futile.’ I said, stretching my body on the mat beside the pool. Vera raised her head a bit. ‘You should know the Roberts by now. They never liked Kyle and will never like him. I think they are just tolerating him because of the kids.’I agreed. ‘If not for the kids, I am certain they would have scared him off and warned me to stay away from him.’‘Did you tell Kyle about it?’I nodded. ‘Yes, I have, and he wants us to meet with my parents. I declined. I don’t think it’s a wise decision yet. We’re still friends for now, and I am yet to decide if I want to go further with him.’She laughed, looking at me. ‘But you enjoyed his lips on yours, right? Honestly, I like the baby steps, but a man can’t wait forever, you know?’‘Kyle King would wait for me even if it takes years for me to decide. He’s obese and in l
Kyle KingIn the mirror, I stared at my eyes. I always thought they lacked the spark seen in other people’s eyes. But, after Tessa teased me about having the brightest eyes she had ever seen, the spark somehow emerged. I washed my face and returned to my bedroom. Today was the last day of King’s company headquarters construction. The project manager had been hard-working, and his team was perfect. They had executed everything according to the construction team plan, although there were some hiccups on the way, but we were able to scale through.I scanned through my outfits, and my eyes rested on a blue shirt with a love emoji at the side. Tessa had gotten it for me a few days before my decision to divorce her six years ago. I never had the courage to throw or wear it, but every morning after she left, I would stare at it like it was a reminder of what we had. My hands lingered on it as I remembered the kiss we had shared when she came to pick up the kids yesterday. She had been reluct
Genevieve Tessa RobertI knocked lightly at the door, opened slowly, and walked into my parent's large library. They had invited me for a meeting after James informed them about my night with Kyle. I rehearsed my speech and reminded myself why I had forgiven Kyle and revealed who he was with the kids.My dad was scrolling through his phone while Mom was laughing at something on her phone. They were seated on the long couch, ignoring my entrance until I settled near them.‘Good afternoon, Mom and Dad. I got your message. But firstly,’ I took Mom’s phone. ‘Aren’t you supposed to be on bedrest?’She folded her hands, pouting. ‘The doctor cleared me yesterday, and I decided to chill with my husband. Is that bad?’I handed the phone back. ‘Alright. It’s not bad, then. So, why did you guys request my presence here this afternoon?’Dad dropped his phone, sitting up. ‘Welcome, dear. I will go straight to the point. I called you because of Kyle. I thought we agreed that you wouldn’t be returni
Kyle KingI held Tessa’s hands as we stood outside her house and replayed our moment in her company. How she held my hand tightly and used her action to define our status. I smiled, looking at her. She was engrossed with a phone call. I decoded it was her father because of the way she kept laughing and calling him Pops. I watched her face, the tilt of her head, and the glow in her eyes. These were part of the reason why I reacted for her. She was mine. My Tessa.‘Are you done admiring my face?’ Tessa asked, smiling widely. ‘You know you take a picture and keep it, right?’I chuckled, releasing her hand. ‘You are irresistible, Tessa, and every time I see your face, I fall harder. You’re my obsession, and I am not afraid to admit it.’She blushed, shaking her head. ‘We’re still friends, right, Kyle?’I drew a breath, nodding. ‘Yes, we are, but that won’t stop me from admitting my feelings for you. I love you now and forever.’‘Okay, Kyle. Thank you. Can we meet the kids now?’I felt a b
Genevieve Tessa RobertI listened as Kyle told me everything that happened between him and Avaline. He also gave me updates on his case, and I wasn’t surprised when he said Avaline was an accomplice to the crime. She had all colours of suspicion written on her when we spoke in Nashville, or rather, when she forced me to listen to her ramblings. He was looking strangely at me. Did he say something that needed my response? ‘Did you say something, Kyle?’ I asked, not caring that I made him feel like I wasn’t listening to him.He shrugged. ‘I have been saying a lot of things, but it’s obvious that you aren’t listening to me. I am truly sorry for not showing up. Avaline just showed up suddenly, got me talking, and before I could figure out what was going on, I was gone.’I replied, taking his hands. ‘You didn’t return my calls. I was worried, and the kids were waiting for you. They refused to sleep after the party because they insisted on seeing you. Kyle. We were supposed to tell them a
Kyle KingI walked into her building, but the receptionist blandly told me she was busy with meetings. I dialled her number several times, but she wasn’t picking. I sent her numerous texts, pleading and informing her I was at the reception. She didn’t reply. I decided to wait until closing hours. She doesn't stay cooped up in her office all day. If she still kept to her schedule, I know by two p.m., she always drove over to her house to check up on the kids and Estella. I winked at the stiff security guards as I settled at the reception. They wouldn’t dare to disturb me because they knew my status. I scrolled through my phone as the early moment with Avaline replayed in my mind. I was going to start with her family. I will reduce them to dust and then ensure their family’s name becomes history. I sent a message to my Russian ethical hacker: Whenever I wanted to do dirty deals, I didn't want trace to my name. I used him. He knew how to walk into an encrypted bank account, drain them,
