Kyle King
She had accepted my date offer and also agreed to eat at Charles’ Lounge. However, I hadn’t expected that she would ask me to pick her up. It was strange, but I agreed. All the times we had gone out, she had always rejected my offer to pick her up. I used to suspect that it was because I was using a rented Jeep. I couldn’t fly mine from Nashville, and buying one here when I wasn’t sure of my movements most of the time would be a bad investment. I confronted her once about it, and she denied my suspicion. According to her, she didn’t want to give her children or family the idea that we were an item. I didn’t believe her.I stopped in front of her house and dialled her number. She picked up after the second dial.
Hi. I will be out in five minutes. Please, hold on.I replied with a thumbs up and checked the Jeep again. I had taken extra care to clean the inside and ensured the air freshener was her favourite. I checked my outfit again—a white shirt, black trousers, and thirty thousand dollars in black shoes. A comfortable outfit for a dinner date with my ex-wife.
I saw her before she saw me. She wore a long black gown that clung to her hourglass shape. Dear Lord! Save me. She was breath-taking. I quickly got out as she stopped in front of the vehicle. ‘Hi. You look stunning, Tessa. Wow.’ She smiled widely, not caring to hide her red cheeks. ‘Thank you, Kyle. You look good too.’ ‘Thank you. What about the kids?’ ‘Oh, they are with my parents. You can see them during the weekend.’ I nodded, closing the door and entering the driver’s seat. ‘I would love that, Tessa. Have you thought about what I suggested?’ She sighed, looking at me. ‘Yes, I did. I am not ready to have that discussion with the kids yet. When it’s time, I will let you know. For now, just enjoy your time with them.’ ‘Tessa, I think you should tell them soon, though. They are my children, and I am tired of pretending to be just a friend to them. They need to know I am their dad.’ ‘Is this what the date is going to be about? Giving me orders like I am your employee? If this is what you are going to do throughout the dinner, please let me get down. I didn’t accept your offer to do this.’ I sighed, starting the Jeep. ‘I am sorry, Tessa. I just wanted you to know how I feel about your decision.’ She said nothing and ignored my comments about her business strides. I sighed. The dinner date was going to be a silent journey, from what I could perceive. Not wanting to accept the defeat, I slid in her favourite artist cassette and increased the volume. She had always been a Phil Collins fan, right from college. She looked at me. ‘You still remember him. Thank you, Kyle. I haven’t listened to him since we got divorced because he reminds me of our memories.’ I swallowed, noticing the pain in her eyes. ‘I still listen to him because you introduced him to me. I became closer to music because of you. I became closer to looking forward to waking up in the mornings because of you.’ She shook her head. ‘Kyle, you have no idea... Let’s not just talk about our past, please.’ ‘Alright, Tessa. What do you want to talk about?’‘Nothing, please. I just want to enjoy the music, if that’s okay with you.’
I nodded, saying nothing. It seems my attempt to make her feel comfortable with me has failed. I glanced at her and noticed her eyes were closed. Well, not failed, though. I wondered if she was thinking about us. Our memories. Our past lives. _Charles Lounge was my favourite place to eat and enjoy their karaoke nights on Wednesdays. They also had a sensational chef, and their waitresses were perfect. I had chosen it because Tessa had a thing for fine cooking and karaoke nights. During the early days of our marriage, she always booked our outings at diners that did Karaoke nights, but that ritual stopped when I joined my family in shaming her.
I still felt stupid about what I did then and hoped this place wouldn’t trigger bad but good memories. I glanced at her as I stopped the engine. ‘We are here. You know, Charles Lounge is known for its remarkable chef’s specials, and their services are top-notch. She scoffed. ‘I am sure there are other places that beat Charles Lounge. Can we go in now? I shrugged, wondering why she reacted that way. ‘Yes, we can. I already reserved a table for us, so we won’t have issues getting a seat. She stepped out of the car, and I followed her. The waitress helped us locate our reserved space and collected our orders. The karaoke had started already. There was someone on the stage singing ‘Stay’ by an artist I didn’t care about. ‘You want to try Karaoke after we are done eating?’ I asked, smiling at the waitress as she dropped our orders. She shook her head and said, ‘Not tonight. I need to talk to you about something. I wanted to bring it up on our way here, but the atmosphere in the vehicle made me change my mind.’ ‘Oh, what is it, Tessa? I drawled, dropping my cutlery. She sighed. ‘It’s about how I feel about you, Kyle. I am not in love with you. I mean, I haven’t fallen for you as much as you have for me, and that’s because of what happened between us then. I know I have forgiven you and promised to finally let go, but it’s hard for me. I don’t want to push you away, but I just want you to know that I may never fall in love with you again. I am sorry.’ I stared at her for minutes, not knowing what to say. I thought and felt that we were making progress, but hearing her full confession and repetition of what she once said about us broke me in ways I couldn’t explain. ‘Tessa, did I hurt you so much that you can’t find a space in your heart to love like you used to?’She shook her head. ‘I am afraid if I let you in again, you would break my heart again. There is also my financial status and how you view me now. Kyle, I am not ready to be power-drunk like you. The Planet O’s project shows how crazy you can be when you want something to be yours. You bought all your competitors' businesses! Just because you want to remain at the top.’
I took her hands. ‘I took an opportunity; Tessa and I didn’t buy all their businesses, just a few. I am not returning to you because of your status, but because I love you so much. My life is nothing without you in it. If you give me the chance, I know I won’t mess it up again.’ She withdrew her hands, shaking her head. ‘I’ve made up my mind, please. Let’s continue with our meals. How’s the King’s company? Are you planning on relocating the company here?’ And just like that, the conversation changed. I respected her decision and provided answers to her questions. ‘I am not relocating the company, though, but Xavier and I are thinking of opening a second branch here. Nashville will be the headquarters. We have some investors here, thanks to Xavier’s connections and also the market research so far. I think we will work.’ ‘That’s nice. The King’s Company is like the jack-of-all-trade, even though the niche is robotics and architectural and mechanical design. The United Kingdom has the right market for you, so go ahead. I can’t wait to see what you guys do.’ I smiled, enjoying her enthusiasm. It turns out the change of conversation has changed the atmosphere. ‘Thank you. I will keep you updated on our progress.’ I replied, turning my head to the song playing. It was our favourite. ‘Do you remember this song?’ She chuckled, singing the lyrics. ‘Yes, I do. Your mom hated it because she couldn’t get the dance steps right.’ I laughed. ‘She still can’t. Remember when we first taught her?’ Tessa laughed loudly as I retold the story over and over again. The dinner date started not so well, but we were able to make the most of it. Tessa avoided topics that led to our divorce and talked more about the early years of our marriage. I guess that was the best part of our marriage to her. After the dinner date, I drove her home. The atmosphere was silent, and she only said one or two things when I tried to lift the mood. ‘Thank you for tonight, Kyle. Maybe we can do this again with the kids,’ she said, unbuckling her seat belt. I nodded eagerly. ‘I hope we can. Thank you too for tonight, and I apologize once again for everything.’ She sighed. ‘You apologize a lot, Kyle. I have told you already: I forgive you for everything.’ ‘So, maybe I still have a chance with you?’ She smiled, stepping out. ‘Never say never, Kyle King.’ I chuckled, watching her away. She gave a backward glance and waved.Never say never, Kyle King.
Geneveive Tessa RobertI completed the last piece of paperwork on my desk and gave myself a pat on the back. It had been a long day, with several clients popping in with difficult requests. I turned down most of them and stuck with ones whose job requests required streamlined processes.I glanced at the wall clock. It was almost nine o’clock. Thankfully, the kids were still with my parents, enjoying the new year’s celebration before school resumed, so there was no one waiting for me at home. I reviewed the last email on my laptop and switched it off. A note captured my attention. ‘Day four apology: Never say never. I took it, read it again, and kept it in my drawer. Kyle had sent the note with a basket of chocolate packs and Chinese food, which were sitting in my stomach now. He had resumed his lunch surprise packages, and strangely, I loved them.My relationship with Kyle was a hot and cold one. I had finally told him how I felt, and instead of me not keeping him expectant, I told h
Kyle KingResuming the position as the Chief Executive Officer of the most-fought-for company in Nashville was a dream come true. I never thought I would be able to accomplish this feat at my age, but here I was, sitting in a board meeting as every member introduced themselves to me. A few of the executives didn’t hesitate to show their grievances, but I put them in their places as I reminded them who was in charge and why they needed to obey me, or they would be out of the door holding their resumes for whoever wanted to listen to them.I was in the middle of a virtual meeting with one of those unsatisfied executives when the Tessa call came in. I didn’t even think twice as I ended the meeting with an abrupt wave and signed off without waiting for their regular grunts. Immediately after she told me about her problem, I almost booked a flight back to the U.K.I had to call Xavier’s number several times, threaten him, and make a stupid offer for him to get on his feet, drive, and pic
Geneveive Tessa RobertI applied makeup, did my glossy blonde hair in a bun (I had changed the colour during the weekend), and wore my favourite red long dress with enough lining to reveal my glowing thighs. I doused my body with a new brand of perfume Vee had recommended and wore my ear rings. I smiled at my appearance. This was enough to make a statement at the Roberts Charity Gala. Dad had founded Robert’s foundation after the twins came. He saw it as another way to give to society. He had other NGOs he was affiliated with, but he wanted the one he owned and could invest in without the usual politics.I checked myself again and walked out of the room to check on the kids. They were attending the gala for the first time, and I needed to ensure they were comfortable.‘Hope, are you and your brother ready to attend the event? Your friends would be there, but not all of them, and there will be no games. Just long talks and dancing.’Hope giggled. ‘Momma, we are ready. Nico, you will k
Kyle KingThe library door closed with a gentle click. I looked up, and Ava crossed the room, smiling slyly and wearing a see-through gown. I noticed she wore nothing. Was she trying to seduce me? I scoffed, tapping my slender fingers as she settled on the couch, facing and spreading her legs. She wore no pants either. If only she knew I wasn’t in for her slutty behaviour tonight, she would have thought twice before she entered here. ‘What do you want, Ava?’ I asked when it was evident she wasn’t going to say anything. She smiled, spreading her legs wider. ‘I just came to say hi since you have been avoiding me for three days.’ I shrugged, taking a lazy sip of my wine. ‘ I have my reasons for avoiding you, and I remember warning you to stay away from my library and room. You’re my mother’s guest and not mine. Now, I ask again: What do you want?’She closed her legs, standing up. ‘Come on, Kyle. It’s just the two of us here. Mom won’t know you did anything with me. Don’t you miss all
Geneveive Tessa RobertThe twins' birthday were coming up soon, and my parents were making another grand plan. Bigger and better than last year’s own. Nicholas and Hope had agreed to have a simple party, and they didn’t want any clowns this year. Last year’s own had made Hope cry and Nicholas frightened. Up to date, they still disliked clowns. I almost blamed my parents for their fear, but it wasn't entirely their fault. The clown we hired gave up at the last minute, and James got one of his acquaintances to act as the clown, and the guy failed woefully. He couldn’t even make his balloons look beautiful.I had suggested we do a royalty-themed party since Nicholas always called himself King and Hope believed she was Cinderelli. I had gotten tired of correcting her that the Disney princess’s name was Cinderella, not what she called it, but she refused to listen. She is a stubborn five-year-old
Kyle King‘I told you not to let anyone in except those on the visitor list. Can’t you take simple instructions?’ I asked, staring coldly at Sharon, the new assistant my new-found buddy, Jones at Planet O, had hired. ISharon stammered, ‘I am sorry, sir, but she claimed to be your girlfriend, and before I could stop her, she was in already.’The object of my anger—Ava—laughed, showing her straight, long legs. ‘Calm down, Kyle. She didn’t do anything wrong by allowing me in. I am your girlfriend after all.’I glared darkly at her and refocused my attention on Sharon. ‘Next time she comes in here, you will lose your job. Leave.’She muttered an apology underneath her breath and scrambled out of the office. I would also have a discussion with the security team about Ava. She had been stalking me everywhere since I forced my mom to
Kyle KingI tried to open my eyes, but the pain surging from my head made me close them immediately. There were voices. A familiar one I hadn’t heard in awhile. No. It couldn’t be her. I was probably dreaming, or the blows to my head had done more damage to my brain. I tried to stay awake to listen to the voices, but I slowly lost consciousness.I felt a calm hand on my wrist and slowly opened my eyes. The room was bright, and I squinted to adjust my eyes to the light. There was a face looking expectantly at me. Mom. No, not Mom. She was truly here, and I wasn’t dreaming. Tessa.‘Finally, you decided to wake up. We thought you were enjoying the unconscious stage.’ Tessa said, smiling.I tried to get up, but the pain at my side made me rethink my decision. ‘You’re really here. I thought I was dreaming.’She smiled, holding my hands. ‘Xavier showed up at my office and told me what happened
Geneveive Tessa RobertMy parents had been against me travelling to Nashville with the kids to see Kyle, but I had to stand on my ground and make them understand that I needed to be there in his darkest moments. He was also the father of my children, and it was necessary that I be by his side.Mom had been angry, but she was able to convince Dad to let me go. However, I had to go with one of Dad’s security men. An ex-Navy officer. Mr. Hover. He had an intimidating air around him, and his blank face made people think twice before approaching him. I agreed because he was different with the kids, and they liked him.He also provided extra security because I knew coming to Nashville wasn’t the best idea due to my status, and I added my family’s too.I stared at Kyle as he slept. He looked like an angel, with his dark hair, brown eyes, and chiselled face chiselled in a charming way. I always suspected God took extra time creat
