Kyle King
The cafe reminded me of Avaline. It was strange that I hadn’t thought about her until now. She had been a mistake, or better yet, a pill I had taken to cure a remedy. The pill didn’t work, but I remained addicted to it until the effects were glaring. I preferred not to think about her as a lover or wife because it only hurt me more, and the memories of what we had together made me feel used.
Okay, she didn’t use me, but we used each other. I must admit that I enjoyed the time we spent together. She was the fire in our marriage, and her influence in the social circle improved the King’s Company’s ratings. Somehow along the line, when I discovered her wasteful habit and also her entitled nature, I began to lose interest. Thank goodness, she was finally out of my life for good.
‘She’s at that right corner. I hope she doesn’t cut my head and place it on a platter, Kyle. Your mom is more dangerous than Avaline. I hope you know that.’ Xavier said, walking behind me.
I grinned, ‘Little wonder you and her never get along. She hasn’t done anything yet, and you're already crucifying her.’
He drawled, ‘You won’t blame me. Your mom has threatened me more than cops, man! Anyway, I agreed to come with you, so let’s get over this meeting.’
‘Alright. Play it cool and only disagree when necessary, alright?’ I said, stopping in front of her table. ‘Hello, mom. You look gorgeous. How was Paris?’
Dahila smiled, showcasing her manicured fingers. ‘It was fun. My friends ensured I tasted everything about France, including their men.’
I coughed, ‘Come on, mom. I don’t need to know that part. I'm glad you’re back. Can I place our orders now?’
‘Oh, you brought him. Xavier, don’t you have a client to meet up with, or are you jobless now?’ Dahila asked, not hiding her displeasure.
Xavier settled near me. ‘No, I am not jobless, Dahila. I just wanted to say hi to you. It’s been months since we saw each other, right? Almost seven months.’
She chuckled dryly. ‘Whatever, son. I didn’t miss you, though, but anyway, I am glad you’re back with my son. Kyle, I called you because of Avaline.’
I sighed. I knew it. ‘What about her? Is the court increasing her sentence or reverting to what it’s supposed to be?’
Avaline was supposed to receive three years for what she did, but her parents had pulled a lot of strings for her.
‘Don’t be that person, Kyle. I know what she did was bad, but justice has been served. She will be out by the end of the year, and her mom... I mean, we want you guys to work things out. We know the divorce can be swept under the rug, right? Dahila winked and smiled broadly.
Xavier chuckled. ‘Forgive me, but do you really want your son to return to someone who wasn’t adding to the family’s business and progress? She almost ruined your son and then attacked his children. Why do you like this Dahila?’
She snapped, ‘I wasn’t talking to you, Xavier! Why don’t you keep quiet and pretend to be a non-living element while my son responds to me? Fool!’
I held Xavier’s hands to prevent him from retailing. I knew mom was trying to get on his nerves. ‘Mom, there’s no need for condescending remarks, okay? Xavier is telling the truth. Why would you want me to return to an ex-convict? She almost ruined me. Can’t you remember all the problems she caused?’
Dahila sighed, ‘What problems? You didn’t even try to solve anything but kept on rubbing her face. You kept comparing her to that barren thing!’
I yelled, ‘She isn’t barren, mom! She has two kids who are your grandchildren. I thought you were happy about this.’
‘I am. I am sorry I said that. I just feel Tessa doesn’t fit the picture for the medium, according to Avaline. Tessa might come from a wealthy family, but her social status is basic. We need social status, and Avaline has been giving us that until the divorce happened.’
Of course, it was always about her and not me.
‘Avaline and I are over. There’s no coming back for us. No coming back, mom.’ I repeated. ‘I will be returning to the U.K. in two weeks time to be with Tessa and my kids. If you want to meet them, you can hop along; if you don't, it's your loss.’
She hissed, standing up. ‘Alright, suit yourself. I wonder what you will do when I collect the company from you. All that arrogance. What will it get you? Nothing!’
Xavier laughed. ‘You always think about fame, money, and status, but not your son’s feelings. It’s not always about you, Dahila. Learn to be empathetic and selfless, okay?’
She rolled her eyes. ‘And learn your place, fool! I know what to do anyway. Enjoy your afternoon, fools!’
I chuckled, watching her storm off. That woman was something else. I had to find a way to make her come around. I couldn’t go ahead with Tessa if my mom was still pissed at me, and there was company too.
‘Are you going to bend to her rules? You can’t do that, Kyle. You are no longer that hard-core CEO who everyone feared back then. You have become a better person. More approachable, and I am certain that’s why Tessa is giving you a chance. If you listen to your mom, you will lose Tessa and the kids. Do you want that?’
I sighed. ‘I can't lose the company. It is what makes me Kyle King. I don’t have any other business to fall on if she takes it from me.’
Xavier hummed, ‘Speak to your uncle. He could help out. Maybe ask other family relatives to force your mom to sign the company completely to you.’
I shook my head. ‘That won’t work. Uncle David is in North Korea. He relocated after he sold his D.K. shares. I will find a way around this. Thank you for coming with me.’
He shrugged. ‘Be careful. Your mom is preparing something we wouldn’t like.’
I agreed. Dahila King would do anything to get what she wanted. That was how the kings were.
Geneveive Tessa RobertI blinked at the alarm clock and closed my eyes for the eleventh time. It was two a.m., and I was still unable to sleep. I opened my eyes and reached out for the novel chosen by the book club, an old read for me—Firestarter by Stephen King. I wondered why we had to read something like this in a book club where the majority of the members were hopeless romantics. I stared at the folded page and slowly opened it. I was still stuck in chapter eight since I started the book at the beginning of the month. Even though it was an old read, I was still finding it difficult to read it because I was distracted and worried. Kyle King.He kept creeping into my mind every now and then. Today made it the third week we had been speaking since he left for Nashville. We don’t speak every day, but the interaction has been top-notch. He always updated me on everything he did over there, while I reciprocated the energy. I caught myself more than I expected, and slowly, I began to
Geneveive Tessa Robert‘I don’t think I want the room to be pink. What if it’s not a girl but a boy?’ Vera asked, rubbing her stomach. The bump wasn’t obvious yet, but she did everything to make everyone aware that she was expecting a baby.I glanced at the pale walls. ‘We don’t have to paint the walls until the sixth month, you know? We can just arrange the room and put up the cradle for now. What do you think?’‘Nah… I want to paint it now. This is my first child, and I want everything to be ready before he or she comes.’ she sighed.I knew something was wrong when a tear fell. ‘Vera, what’s the problem? Did the doctor say anything concerning the baby?’She sniffed. ‘Yes, it’s not a big issue, though. It’s more me than the baby. My blood pressure increased again, and the doctor is really concerned. He thinks the baby is the cause! Can you imagine?’I took her hands and made her sit on the only couch in the room. ‘Vera, you know he’s just giving you a medical opinion. I also think yo
Kyle KingI replied to some emails, typed my task list, and reviewed reports all through the morning. I instructed Christine not to allow anyone in except the Planet O executives. I needed no distraction at the moment. Even though there was one lurking in my heart, I picked up my phone and dialled her number again. It went to voicemail again. I typed a message and hoped she would reply. I didn't want to stop replying to her messages, but work activities had been so hectic, and Mom was monitoring my activities. She saw a text from Tessa, and we had one of the biggest fights. The fight destroyed my mood, and I couldn't bring myself to call Tessa because I knew I might end up transferring the aggression to her.Maybe she was busy at her end or she was rethinking her stance in my life, which would not be good. I scrolled through my phone and called the last person I never thought would need his time now or ever. Her junior brother is James. Her sole protector. During my stay in the Unite
Geneveive Tessa Robert‘Take it easy, Hope. There's still more spaghetti here.’ I yelled, watching her take another mouthful.‘Let her be, Tessa. She’s enjoying the meal, and look at Nicholas; he’s also swallowing the food.’ Vera said, laughing.I sighed. When it comes to food, they have no control. They ate like there was an appointment; they needed to keep up with it. I glanced at Vera and smiled. Her bump was coming out faster than we expected, and I could feel the pride in the way she carried herself lately. She wasn’t brooding anymore or thinking about her health condition. She had another attack before we finally decided to take a long vacation and return next year. The doctor had agreed to the idea and instructed that Vera rest and ensure she didn’t do anything that would increase her blood pressure.Vera had been reluctant, but I had to remind her about the benefits of the vacation, and Murphy played the final role in convincing her. We agreed to stay at a resort for the rest
Kyle King‘Are you sure you can’t do anything about her? She’s clearly on my neck and now wants to stop my deal with Planet O! You've got to try something for me. We can't just give up just like that.’ I slammed my fists on the desk, frightening Attorney Smith. His fingers shook as he took a long gulp of the bottle of water he held tightly like it was his mother. ‘I read through the company’s contract, and you actually signed the company to her by giving her the higher veto power. You shouldn’t blame me for that mistake.’I glared at him, fantasizing about the idea of using his bottle of water to slam his face. It was cruel, but at least he would know how serious I was. Planet O had agreed to sell the company to us. We had the right capital, and my business plan seemed innovative to them. Mom suddenly came in, and the executives switched to her side, or, like Xavier said, became her lap dogs, and voted against buying the company. After all the papers had been signed, we were expecte
Geneveive Tessa RobertI felt sick even before I stepped out of bed. It wasn’t a fever. I have been worrying and been unable to sleep ever since I started the silent treatment. The one where I read Kyle’s messages, ignored his calls, and zoomed him off my thinking radar. I stepped out of the bed and walked into the shower. Showers had a way of relaxing my thoughts and allowing me to review my decisions on certain things. This time around, all my decisions revolved around Kyle. A few minutes later, I stepped out of my room, feeling better. I knew what I had to do. ‘Hey, dear. You look better than yesterday. How’s the headache?’ Vera asked, arranging the plates for breakfast. I sighed. She wasn’t supposed to be doing anything but resting. Vera never listens.‘You should have allowed Estella and the men to do the arrangement. You shouldn’t stress yourself. You promised.’She shrugged. ‘Okay, doctor, but you know I am indisposed, just pregnant. Y'all are treating me like I would break
Kyle KingI checked through the window blinds and continued pacing. I was beginning to feel the idea wouldn’t work. Mom hadn’t shown up, and she wasn’t picking up calls. The meeting was supposed to start at one p.m., but apparently, Mom didn’t want it to hold because she knew she was going to lose the battle.Xavier had employed the services of his uncle, a prominent attorney, and somehow, the man had found a hole in the contract. He explained the condition in layman’s language, and from what I deduced, mom was supposed to step down once I had children and increase the profits of the company to at least eighty percent.I hadn’
Geneveive Tessa Robert‘All right, everyone. I hope we packed everything?’ I yelled, glancing at the suitcases. Mom had called about an emergency at Hoplas. One of my high-paying clients was about to cancel a major contract with us because she had mistakenly sent a document that contained X-rated links of her kinks to the creative team. The creative head, who had always hated my client’s guts, had released the links to the media. It was crazy drama, and Mom had tried to manage it, but the client's lawyer had gotten a lawyer to sue us for invasion of privacy and sharing contents without her permission. I couldn’t last night because I kept thinking about how I had already reached the peak of my career and that creative head. What’s her name again? Mary just had
