ANNA.
“Am I speaking with Miss Anna ?” a voice across my phone asked.
“Yes. Who am I speaking with, please?
“I am Attorney Luis Davis from A and A Law Consult Seattle.” My heart skipped a beat since I had no association with a law firm so I am wondering why the call.
“Hello?”
“Erm, yeah I am. What’s the issue, please? Have I done anything wrong? I am quite confused that’s all.”
“Miss.Anna you have nothing to worry about. I am calling to have an important conversation with you,” he said.
“Alright, what’s it about?”I ask, sounding a bit curious now.
“Well, Mr Williams Donovan requested that I have a meeting with you to discuss something very important with you. He mentioned that you should visit my office with your father who was his driver for this meeting.”
“Okay but can I know what exactly this meeting is about?”, I asked.
“ I am sorry Miss Anna this is very confidential information which can not be discussed over the phone and without the presence of your father.”Mr Luis replied warmly.
“Alright, sir. I will inform my father about this meeting then. When is the meeting?”
“Tomorrow at 10:00 AM at my office,” he says
“Okay Sir”
“That’s perfect. I will send you my office address and please the time is 10:00 am do not forget.”Mr.Luis replied
Okay sure I won’t.
“That’s great then. See you and your father tomorrow at my office. Goodbye Miss Anna”
“Bye, Mr. Luis”.
I ended the call feeling a sense of nervousness for tomorrow’s meeting. I am confused right now because what in the name of hell was that all about? I honestly do not know what is so confidential that it can’t be discussed over the phone and needs the presence of my father.
I set the table for dinner and wait for my father to discuss this so-called meeting with him. I look around the house feeling very sad because I miss my mother so much. It has been a year already since we lost her to leukemia so now it is just Dad and I doing this thing called life together. I miss her meals and our endless conversations about my boring relationship life. My mom was my best friend we did everything together even during her last days on earth we were inseparable. Tears run down my cheeks as I remember her and miss her much more this evening.
“Mom wherever you’re I miss you so much today I do not know why but I just want to hug you tightly. Continue watching over us Mom. I will always love you”. I silently murmur to myself.
I hear the front door of our little apartment open and there he is the most important man in my life my father Mr Oswald Smith appears.
I hug him tightly as I always do. Yeah, that’s our little tradition.
“Welcome home Dad. How was your day?” I ask as I begin to set the table for dinner.
“Thank you, my Princess. Today was quite stressful since I had to drive my new boss around town most of the day,” he says as he sits for dinner.
“Your new boss?”
“Yes, Mr.Williams Donovan's son Damien is now my new boss”.
“Ow okay but I thought Damien could drive himself .”
“Yes he can but he has instructed me to be driving him around from now onwards. Come to think of it Anna if he decides to drive by himself, I will be out of a job. So I am grateful to drive him around.”Dad says with a sense of gratitude in his tone.
“Well, you’re right Dad. I hope that my job application as a Marketer at the new insurance company that’s about to be opened will be accepted so I can help with the expenses and if possible retire you.”
“I hope you get employed too, my princess. Enough of this talk what did you make for dinner?”My dad asks.
“Well, I made your favourite rice and chicken stir fry with vegetables. I”
“Great I am starving. This looks very delicious Anna. I am very sure it will taste good as always.” he says with a smile on his face.
As my father stands to serve us dinner, I decide to discuss the call I received from Mr.Luis Davis during the day.
“Dad, there is something I want to tell you,'' I say glancing up to see his reaction.
My dad gives me a worried look and takes his seat to listen to whatever I have to say.
“I am all ears. What's the matter?” his voice filled with concern.
“Okay Dad, so I received a call from one Attorney Luis Davis from A and A Law Consult Seattle today saying that he wants to meet us and discuss something very confidential with us. He said that he called because Mr.Williams Donovan before he passed on requested that we have a meeting with him to discuss this confidential information.” I spill out everything with a hint of confusion and anxiety in my voice.
“Hmm okay, my princess but did he give you any idea what this meeting might be about?” Dad asks, looking at me for clarity.
I retort saying “ No Dad he didn’t.”
“When is this meeting you’re talking about?” Dad asks looking up from his plate
“Well he said tomorrow at 10:00 am and he has already sent me the location of his office. I guess we have to meet him tomorrow so we know what it is about.”
“Hmm alright, I wonder what is so important that Mr. Williams wants you and me to meet his Attorney. Anyway, we will get to find out tomorrow. There’s no need to worry as Mr.Williams Donovan was of great help to our family when he was alive.”Dad reassures me and goes back to eat his meal.
My father is right, there is no need to worry because Mr.Williams helped to finance my college education and helped with my mother’s treatment until her last breath.
“Eat up my princess we will deal with this tomorrow. Do not worry everything will be fine. The food tastes amazing as always. Thanks for dinner, my princess.”My Dad says and leaves for his room.
ANNAAt exactly 10:00 AM, my father and I are seated in the office of Attorney Luis Davis.Although the office is spacious, it is packed with shelves holding law books that run from the length of the walls, from floor to ceiling. The office desk is very luxurious that is well-organized with an iMac and a family photo placed at the center.“Good morning Miss Anna and Mr.Smith.Glad to have you two here and thank you for honouring Mr.William Donovan of the blessed memory request.”Mr.Luis said.“You’re welcome, Mr. Luis. May we get to the reason why we’re all present here as I do not have a lot of time to spare.”My father replied calmly.“Alright let’s get straight to business then. Mr.Williams Donovan instructed me before his untimely death to meet up with you Mr.Smith and your daughter before going ahead to read out his last will.”My father looks as confused as I am but nods to whatever the attorney says. He pulls out a brown envelope and begins to read out what would be the greatest s
DAMIENLosing my father 3 months ago to a cardiac arrest was something I did not see coming. I clearly remember when I had the call from Miss Rosie our cook about my father’s attack while away on a business trip in New York, I stopped everything and headed back to Seattle within a matter of hours. Fortunately, he was still alive although on oxygen at the St.Louis Hospital I had the chance to have a conversation with him not knowing that was the last time.I arrived at the hospital in a rush immediately I landed in Seattle. I went straight to my father’s private hospital room only to find my father hooked on lots of medical equipment. My father looked very pale and weary.“Father”, I said the moment I sat next to him.He gave me a tired smile and said “My boy you came. I thought you wouldn’t be able to come see me because of your business trip.”“Dad you know you’re the most important person and the only surviving family I have. So what makes you think I won’t come see you after I got
DAMIEN“Dear Damien, I trust you’re doing very well now. I know the day you read this I will be gone to be with my beloved wife your mother. My son I am writing this letter to you to tell you how much I love you and how I want you to be happy even in my absence. Damien, I know you’ll be missing me daily as the day goes by without me by your side. But hey son do not worry I am always with you in spirit. The main reason for this letter to you is to request you to fulfil the promise you made to me during my last days on earth. My son, I want you to continue to manage the company very well to make the legacy of Donovan Media still stand tall in the whole of the United States of America, not just Seattle. I believe so much in your abilities to run the company and other businesses so please do not disappoint me.Most importantly the reason for this letter is to require you to get married to Miss Anna Smith the daughter of our driver Mr Smith who happens to be my good friend as well. Son my
DamienThe drive to Onyx Club is a quick one as my mind is miles away. I am so consumed with questions as to why my father would let me get married to his driver’s daughter. A girl I guess is way below my league and not my type of woman.“We are here Sir”.Mr.Smith says drafting me back from my thoughts.I got out of the car without acknowledging him and I headed straight to the VIP session of the club. Yeah, I am Damien Donovan and I have exclusive services wherever I go. I get seated at my usual spot and wait for Evans.“Yo bro where the hell are you?” I say to him the moment he picks up my call.“Shut the fuck up man, I will be there in a few mins. Lily needed my help with something,” he replies.“Alright, waiting for you.”Lily is Evans’s college girlfriend well now fiancee and to be honest I don’t like her. She’s always blaming me for making Evans do things a man who is in a committed relationship is not supposed to do. I am partly to be blamed but hey Evans is a fully grown adu
CHAPTER 6ANNA“Hello?”I’m too dumbfounded to speak as I wonder how Damien gets my contact and why he’s calling me.“Errm hello..”I finally managed to say.“Anna right?” he ask.“Yes, Anna Smith here.”“Okay, I called to inform you about your father. He has been rushed to the hospital.”The words hit me like a ton of bricks and the room feels small as I find it hard to breathe.“What happened? I just got off the phone with him a few hours ago this got to be some joke.”I manage to say.“A joke? Why would I joke about Mr Smith’s health? I found him unconscious in my car park and rushed him to the St.Louis Hospital. I struggled to get your contact to be able to call you and you think this is a joke. You better get here soon as things are not looking good at the moment.”Damien says irritated. The words shook me to my core and for a moment, I am unable to comprehend them. The walls of my room start squeezing in like the room is shrinking with every beat of my heart. The air grows thick a
CHAPTER 7ANNA“Huh?"He asks with a look of confusion on his face.“You heard me right I said get out.”“You got to be joking.” he lets out a little laugh.“Do I look like I am joking? My father is on this hospital bed fighting for his dear life and what you say to me is your soon-to-be husband? You do not even have the decency to ask how he’s faring now since you left him here all by himself after you brought him here. You are just unbelievable. For the very last time leave,” I tell him with a hint of agitation in my tone.He looks at me with an expression I really can’t explain and jeez he still hasn’t made any move to leave the hospital room.I’m so agitated by his presence that I do not even realise the time I am yelling and throwing a tantrum that he should leave the hospital room.“I said leave!” I scream so bad shaking vigorously with tears running down my cheeks. I use all my strength to try to push Damien out of my father’s hospital room. I am so focused on dragging him out o
CHAPTER 8Damien“Fuck!”I slam the door of my SUV and drive home. I am furious as I have never been so humiliated in my life before. Jezz that girl is a psycho, I don’t understand why she would be mad at me after bringing her father to the best hospital and ensuring that he is receiving the best treatments.I stepped out to attend to some business calls that’s why I was unable to stay with Mr.Smith when I rushed him to the hospital. I understand her outburst but she was overly dramatic. I can’t imagine how I would be able to live with such a person and let’s I forget her looks. She’s so small around 5’2 with a curvy stature. I can’t say much about her facial features since she barely looked at me.It’s 1 am and I am unable to sleep. The meeting with Mr.Luis is tomorrow well it’s today at 10 am. I just want to get this done as soon as possible ‘cause I have a very busy day. I try to catch some sleep but sleep is still far from me.I call Vanessa to help me whine away some time. Vaness
CHAPTER 9ANNA“Hello, Miss?”A gentle and soothing voice woke me up from my sleep. A nurse stood beside me, her expression kind but serious."Sorry to wake you," she said softly. "I need to check your father's vitals."I nodded, quickly sitting up and rubbing my eyes. "It's okay. I must have dozed off."She smiled gently. "It's completely understandable. You've been here all night. How are you holding up?"“I am okay I guess,” I tell her my voice cracking slightly. The nurse nods sympathetically,” I understand you. You don’t need to worry your father is in good hands. He’ll be fine”“Thank you”, I watch her as she checks my father’s pulse, blood pressure and other vitals.“How is he doing?” I ask the nurse with a bit of uneasiness in my voice.“From his vitals, he’s a little better. However, the doctors will be in the best position to tell you about your father's health so far,” she says softly.“Alright, thank you very much,” I tell her."Do you need anything? Some water or coffee, m
ANNAThe room is dim, lit only by a flickering bulb that barely illuminates the damp walls. My wrists are raw from the coarse ropes that bind me to the chair, and my throat feels like sandpaper. Nicholas’s menacing presence lingers, even when he isn’t in the room. I’ve lost count of how many hours or days I’ve been here. The door creaks open, and Nicholas steps inside, his dark eyes gleaming with malice. His lips curl into a smirk as he approaches, carrying a whip in one hand and a bottle of water in the other. My stomach growls at the sight of it, but I know better than to expect kindness from him.“Well, well, Mrs.Donovan,” he drawls, his voice dripping with mockery. “How’s your stay so far? Cozy?”I glare at him, my lips too dry to form words. He crouches down, holding the water bottle just out of my reach. “Thirsty?”I nod weakly, my pride shattered by my desperation.Nicholas laughs a cruel sound that echoes through the room. “Beg me for it.”My heart sinks. I know he’ll take ple
DAMIEN The walls of my office feel like they’re closing in as I stare blankly at the framed photo of my parents on my desk. It’s been years since I let myself feel this kind of raw, unrelenting pain—the kind that claws at your soul and doesn’t let go. My chest tightens, and before I know it, hot tears blur my vision. The last time I cried like this was the day we buried my parents. But now, I can’t hold it in anymore. I’ve failed Anna. I’ve failed to protect her, and the weight of that realization is unbearable.Evans sits across from me, his usual sharpness dulled by worry. "Damien, you need to pull yourself together. Crying won’t bring her back."His words, though harsh, ground me. I inhale deeply, wiping my face with trembling hands. "I know," I whisper, my voice raw. "But it feels like I’ve lost everything again, Evans. First my parents, and now Anna. She’s... she’s all I have left.”Evans leans forward, his tone softening. "Then we fight. You’re Damien Donovan, damn it. You don’
ANNAThe cold air bites at my cheeks as I step out of the terminal at JFK Airport, clutching my suitcase. The New York skyline looms in the distance, a strange mixture of awe and dread settling over me. Ian’s text with his address burns in my mind. My hands tremble slightly as I hail a cab.Was this the right decision?Doubt claws at me, but I shove it aside. Damien doesn’t care. He hasn’t cared for a long time or so I tell myself. The memory of his angry eyes last night twists something deep in my chest, but I force myself to breathe. This is about me now. About starting over. The cab ride feels endless, and when it finally pulls up to a towering building, my stomach churns. Nicholas’s directions lead me to a penthouse suite, the opulence of the place making me hesitate for a moment before knocking. The door swings open almost immediately, and there he is Nicholas, looking as polished as ever in a tailored suit, his dark eyes sharp and calculating."Anna," he greets, his lips curlin
DAMIENThe moment I read Anna’s message, my entire world shifts."Don’t bother coming home tonight. I won’t be here when you do."The words burn in my mind as I grab my car keys and race out of the office. Every mile I drive feels like a lifetime, the thought of her leaving consuming me. She can’t leave. Not like this. Not without me setting things right. My tyres screech as I pull into the driveway, the house eerily silent. The lights are on, but the emptiness screams louder than words. I storm inside, calling out her name."Anna!"No answer.I head upstairs, my chest tightening as I push open the bedroom door. The sight stops me cold. Her side of the closet is half-empty, drawers open and rifled through. A suitcase is gone. My heart pounds. She’s gone."Miss Rosie!" I bellow, my voice echoing through the halls. My appears at the bottom of the stairs, her face pinched with worry. "Damien, what’s wrong?"I take the steps two at a time, reaching her in seconds. "Where is she? Where’s A
ANNAI pace the living room, phone pressed tightly to my ear, waiting for Lola to pick up. My hands are trembling, a mixture of anger, frustration, and something I can’t quite name boiling inside me. After what feels like an eternity, her familiar voice answers."Hey, girl! What’s up?"Lola’s voice is light and casual, but I can’t match her tone."Lola," I say, my voice strained, "I need to talk to you."Her tone shifts immediately. "What’s wrong? Did something happen with Damien?"I sink into the couch, pulling a blanket over my lap. "Everything. Everything is wrong, Lola. We argued last night, and it was bad. He’s distant, I’m distant it’s like we’re tearing each other apart."I pour everything out, my words tumbling over each other in a rush. I tell her about the fight, about Nicholas, and how Damien discovered the messages. I even admit to avoiding Damien due to her advice on being distant from him. By the time I finish, I’m out of breath, my throat tight from holding back tears.L
ANNAThe room feels suffocatingly empty. I lie in bed, staring at the ceiling, tears sliding silently down my cheeks. The weight of my argument with Damien presses on my chest like a boulder, making breathing hard. How did we get here? One moment, we’re building something fragile yet hopeful; the next, it’s all crumbling beneath our feet.I glance at the door, hoping against hope that he’ll walk in and say something anything to bridge the widening chasm between us. But the house is eerily quiet. When the clock strikes midnight and there’s still no sign of Damien, the pain in my chest intensifies. He’s always been composed, never one to let his emotions get the better of him, but tonight, he was raw, unfiltered. The anger in his eyes, the hurt in his voice it’s all on replay in my mind.I pull the covers up to my chin, curling into myself as the tears come faster now, sobs shaking my body. The truth of it all stings: I messed up. I avoided him, and let Nicholas’s messages fill a void I
DAMIEN Tonight, I’ve had enough. As I walk into the bedroom, I see her sitting on the bed, scrolling through her phone. My chest tightens. Her phone. Again.“Anna,” I say, my voice low but firm. She looks up, startled. “What?”“We need to talk.”Her expression hardens immediately, and she puts her phone down on the nightstand. “About what?”“You know damn well what.”She crosses her arms, her defensiveness a barrier I know all too well. “If this is about me not talking to you much lately, maybe you should look in the mirror first.”That sparks something in me a simmering anger I’ve been trying to suppress for days. “Oh, so this is my fault now?”“Well, you’ve been distant, Damien! You come home late, barely say a word to me, and act like I don’t even exist. What do you expect me to do?”I take a step closer, my voice rising. “Don’t you dare put this on me? You’ve been avoiding me first! Don’t think I haven’t noticed you shutting me out, glued to your phone like it’s the only thing th
DAMIENThe tension in the house is thick enough to choke on. Anna and I move around each other like ghosts, existing in the same space but never really crossing paths. She barely looks at me, her silence a sharp blade that cuts deeper with every passing hour. I tell myself to give her time, but patience has never been my strong suit. It’s late evening when I walk into the living room and find her curled up on the couch, her phone glued to her hand. She doesn’t glance up when I enter, her fingers flying across the screen. I wonder who she’s texting so eagerly, but I push the thought aside. I don’t want to be the paranoid husband.“Anna,” I say, trying to keep my voice neutral.“Hmm?” she murmurs, not looking up.“I’m ordering dinner. Do you want anything?”“I’m fine,” she replies, her tone clipped.I nod, even though she doesn’t see it, and walk into the kitchen. The tension is unbearable, and I feel like I’m suffocating in my own home. I’ve tried to bridge the gap between us, but ever
ANNADamien comes down the stairs, his steps steady and deliberate. I’m sitting at the dining table, scrolling aimlessly through my phone. He stops in the doorway, his presence filling the room even before he speaks.“Morning,” he says, his voice soft but edged with something I can’t quite place.I glance up briefly and mutter, “Morning,” before returning my attention to the screen.“Any plans for today?” he asks, trying to sound casual.“Not really,” I reply, my tone clipped. He pauses as if waiting for me to say more, but when I don’t, he pulls out a chair and sits across from me.“Anna,” he says after a moment, leaning forward slightly. “What’s going on?”I don’t answer right away, pretending to be engrossed in my phone.“Don’t do this,” he says, his voice firmer now. “If something’s bothering you, just tell me.”I sigh, finally looking up at him. His eyes are searching mine, filled with an earnestness that makes me uncomfortable. “It’s nothing, Damien. I just need some space.”“Sp
