DAMIEN
“Dear Damien,
I trust you’re doing very well now. I know the day you read this I will be gone to be with my beloved wife your mother. My son I am writing this letter to you to tell you how much I love you and how I want you to be happy even in my absence. Damien, I know you’ll be missing me daily as the day goes by without me by your side. But hey son do not worry I am always with you in spirit. The main reason for this letter to you is to request you to fulfil the promise you made to me during my last days on earth.
My son, I want you to continue to manage the company very well to make the legacy of Donovan Media still stand tall in the whole of the United States of America, not just Seattle. I believe so much in your abilities to run the company and other businesses so please do not disappoint me.
Most importantly the reason for this letter is to require you to get married to Miss Anna Smith the daughter of our driver Mr Smith who happens to be my good friend as well. Son my reason for this is to make sure that you have a family of your own to be a complete man. I know you love how your life is right now but Son marrying a girl like Anna will make you very responsible.
I have instructed Mr.Luis, my Attorney, to ensure that you marry Anna within two weeks of receiving this letter and you must be married to her before you gain full ownership of whatever I have willed to you in my last will.
Damien do not disregard this wish of mine as you promised to do whatever I have instructed you to do. You’ll not have complete access to my properties until you have fully done whatever is required of you in this letter especially your marriage to Miss Anna Smith.
Make the most of your marriage with Miss Anna Smith and try your best to uphold the name of the legacy Donovan.
I love you son.
Your Father.”
My hands are shaking as I look at the paper I just read from. I just cannot believe what I have just read. I raise my head to look at Mr.Luis who is glaring at me with a look of concern on his face.
“My father can’t be really serious about this. Marriage? No Luis I am not sure I will be able to do this.”I am raging inside and it’s just a matter of time for me to have an outburst.
“Calm down Damien, I know this is a lot to take in but as stated by your father the only way you can fully have control as the sole owner of his properties you have to do what he demands.”Mr.Luis cautiously says.
“And you also think getting married to a stranger is something that I want? Answer me, Luis! I don’t know this woman he’s even talking about. You expect me to marry a woman who is not in my league because clearly, Mr Smith is nowhere close to where I Damien Donovan is in life. My father got to be joking Luis.” I rant aggressively to Luis.
Mr.Luis tries to calm me down by saying “Damien I understand that you’re angry by what your father is demanding of you. Remember this is the lifestyle you are used so you got to do what is demanded of you in this letter to have the rightful ownership of your father’s wealth.”
“ Luis you got to be kidding me . Did my father think this through carefully because all this does not make any sense to me”.I retorts.
“Remember the promise you made to him during his last moments Damien. You promised to do whatever is asked of you. So now is the time to do what you promised your late father. Be a man of your word.” Mr.Luis reminds me of the promise I made to my father when he was hospitalized.
“Seriously Luis, I need to think about this because this changes everything I have planned out for myself. Marriage is something that is very far from my thoughts but as you just said I have to be a man of my word and do whatever I promised my father before he took his last breath.”
“That works perfectly Damien but note that you have very limited time because according to your father’s instructions, you have to meet Miss Anna Smith next week to finalize the preparation of your marriage in two weeks.” Mr.Luis tells me.
“You got to be joking Luis. Like how can my father do this to me” I angrily lash out at Mr.Luis.
“Well, your father was very serious about everything he wrote in the letter in your hands Damien. I best advise that you heed to whatever is stated in the letter and act according to it.”Mr.Luis cautions me.
“Fine if that’s what he wants then he gets it. There’s no need for me to think of this then. Arrange the meeting for next week and lemme see my supposed perfect future wife selected by my beloved father.” I say in a sarcastic tone.
“Alright, Damien. Wednesday it is then. You get to meet your future wife on Wednesday at exactly 10:00am.No lateness.”
“Noted Luis. However, does she know about all this?” I question Luis.
“Yes, she does. She got to know about this two days ago after I met with her and her father. And she is well aware of meeting you.”Luis informs me.
“Hold on for a second. You mean Mr.Smith knows about this too?”I ask sounding shocked at the same time.
“Yes he does Damien,” Luis replies.
“Fuck! This explains his sudden change in behaviour today. Wow, I can’t believe he’s going to be my father-in-law in a matter of two weeks. Gosh this is so messed up, I just can’t believe my father put me up to this. I need to clear my mind now.”I stand up and exchange a handshake with Mr.Luis.
“Thank you for understanding Damien. Your father will be very proud of you wherever he is.”Mr.Luis says to me with a smile on his face.
“I hope so Mr.Luis because this is absurd to me. Do enjoy the rest of your day.”
I leave Mr.Luis’s office with my father’s letter in my suit pocket. I call Jasmine and cancel all pending meetings I have scheduled for the rest of the day. I need to clear my mind so that means drinks with my best friend Evans will help.
“Yo bro”, he says after answering my call.
“Yo Evans, can we meet up at our usual spot?” I ask him in a low tone.
“Bro it’s just 1 pm on a Monday and you want to drink?” Evans teases me.
“Fuck you Evans I know that. Are you coming or not?”
“I’m coming let me clear my schedule and meet you,” he says and hangs up.
One thing about Evans is he’s always there for me. He’s been my best friend since we were in preschool. We went to Princeton University together and we both graduated with honours. He’s the only person who I guess gets me in this world.
I make my way to the car park to find Mr.Smith already seated in the driver’s seat. I decided to keep mute about everything since I knew very well that I would lash out at him if I were to speak.
“Drive to Onyx Club, now,” I demand.
“Alright sir” he stammers in response. Well, I guess he gets that I am not in a very good mood.
Anna, be ready for a very rough marriage. Damien Donovan does not love.
DamienThe drive to Onyx Club is a quick one as my mind is miles away. I am so consumed with questions as to why my father would let me get married to his driver’s daughter. A girl I guess is way below my league and not my type of woman.“We are here Sir”.Mr.Smith says drafting me back from my thoughts.I got out of the car without acknowledging him and I headed straight to the VIP session of the club. Yeah, I am Damien Donovan and I have exclusive services wherever I go. I get seated at my usual spot and wait for Evans.“Yo bro where the hell are you?” I say to him the moment he picks up my call.“Shut the fuck up man, I will be there in a few mins. Lily needed my help with something,” he replies.“Alright, waiting for you.”Lily is Evans’s college girlfriend well now fiancee and to be honest I don’t like her. She’s always blaming me for making Evans do things a man who is in a committed relationship is not supposed to do. I am partly to be blamed but hey Evans is a fully grown adu
CHAPTER 6ANNA“Hello?”I’m too dumbfounded to speak as I wonder how Damien gets my contact and why he’s calling me.“Errm hello..”I finally managed to say.“Anna right?” he ask.“Yes, Anna Smith here.”“Okay, I called to inform you about your father. He has been rushed to the hospital.”The words hit me like a ton of bricks and the room feels small as I find it hard to breathe.“What happened? I just got off the phone with him a few hours ago this got to be some joke.”I manage to say.“A joke? Why would I joke about Mr Smith’s health? I found him unconscious in my car park and rushed him to the St.Louis Hospital. I struggled to get your contact to be able to call you and you think this is a joke. You better get here soon as things are not looking good at the moment.”Damien says irritated. The words shook me to my core and for a moment, I am unable to comprehend them. The walls of my room start squeezing in like the room is shrinking with every beat of my heart. The air grows thick a
CHAPTER 7ANNA“Huh?"He asks with a look of confusion on his face.“You heard me right I said get out.”“You got to be joking.” he lets out a little laugh.“Do I look like I am joking? My father is on this hospital bed fighting for his dear life and what you say to me is your soon-to-be husband? You do not even have the decency to ask how he’s faring now since you left him here all by himself after you brought him here. You are just unbelievable. For the very last time leave,” I tell him with a hint of agitation in my tone.He looks at me with an expression I really can’t explain and jeez he still hasn’t made any move to leave the hospital room.I’m so agitated by his presence that I do not even realise the time I am yelling and throwing a tantrum that he should leave the hospital room.“I said leave!” I scream so bad shaking vigorously with tears running down my cheeks. I use all my strength to try to push Damien out of my father’s hospital room. I am so focused on dragging him out o
CHAPTER 8Damien“Fuck!”I slam the door of my SUV and drive home. I am furious as I have never been so humiliated in my life before. Jezz that girl is a psycho, I don’t understand why she would be mad at me after bringing her father to the best hospital and ensuring that he is receiving the best treatments.I stepped out to attend to some business calls that’s why I was unable to stay with Mr.Smith when I rushed him to the hospital. I understand her outburst but she was overly dramatic. I can’t imagine how I would be able to live with such a person and let’s I forget her looks. She’s so small around 5’2 with a curvy stature. I can’t say much about her facial features since she barely looked at me.It’s 1 am and I am unable to sleep. The meeting with Mr.Luis is tomorrow well it’s today at 10 am. I just want to get this done as soon as possible ‘cause I have a very busy day. I try to catch some sleep but sleep is still far from me.I call Vanessa to help me whine away some time. Vaness
CHAPTER 9ANNA“Hello, Miss?”A gentle and soothing voice woke me up from my sleep. A nurse stood beside me, her expression kind but serious."Sorry to wake you," she said softly. "I need to check your father's vitals."I nodded, quickly sitting up and rubbing my eyes. "It's okay. I must have dozed off."She smiled gently. "It's completely understandable. You've been here all night. How are you holding up?"“I am okay I guess,” I tell her my voice cracking slightly. The nurse nods sympathetically,” I understand you. You don’t need to worry your father is in good hands. He’ll be fine”“Thank you”, I watch her as she checks my father’s pulse, blood pressure and other vitals.“How is he doing?” I ask the nurse with a bit of uneasiness in my voice.“From his vitals, he’s a little better. However, the doctors will be in the best position to tell you about your father's health so far,” she says softly.“Alright, thank you very much,” I tell her."Do you need anything? Some water or coffee, m
CHAPTER 10Anna “Why are you shocked like you have just seen ghosts? Good morning my dearest soon-to-be wife,” Damien says with a fake smile. He continues to talk “ I just spoke to the doctors this morning and they have assured me that Mr.Smith will be out of coma very soon and he’ll be fine.” “Okay, thanks,” I say quietly still very confused as to why they’re here much earlier than I expected. I look at Mr.Luis with so many questions running in my mind but I am unable to speak up. “Good morning Miss Anna,” Mr.Luis finally speaks. I give him a small nod to acknowledge his greetings. I don’t why all of a sudden I have lost my ability to talk. I guess it’s because Damien is here and I am still very much ashamed of how I behaved towards him last night. I can’t tell if he’s angry at me for how I behaved towards him yesterday. He doesn't look like he’s mad at me though. Well, he’s so handsome that I can’t even look at him straight in the face. Honestly, the pictures of him on the inte
CHAPTER 11 ANNA“Let’s have the meeting,” I say with all the strength I have in me in order not to appear weak. I don’t want them to find out that my house was broken into. The last thing I want from anyone right now is pity.“Finally, the queen of Seattle is out. I wonder what you were telling that boyfriend of yours that kept you so long,” Damien says sounding very agitated.“Boyfriend? That’s my best friend Lola who called.” I shoot a rude response to him since he’s beginning to irritate me.“Best friend huh? Well if you say so wifey dearest,” Damien says sarcastically.“Thanks for understanding soon-to-be husband,”I respond to him in the same tone.“Can we start now? I would appreciate it if you two don’t pick at each other. Let’s all remember we’re in Mr.Smith’s hospital room and he doesn’t need this. You two should act like adults,” Mr.Luis cautions us.I sit next to my father’s bed and take his hand into mine. I need him now more than ever because I am really going through a l
CHAPTER 12ANNA“Anna, oh my goodness”, Lola rushes to me and gives me a tight hug. “Lola, I feel like dying,” I say to her whilst sobbing.“Hey don’t say that my girl. You have to be strong for your father he needs you more than ever. Everything is going to be fine,” she says.“What about my apartment?Any news from the police yet?”“Not yet Anna. Don’t worry too much about it. They’re doing their best to find the culprit.”Lola reassures me.“ I brought you some clothes and got you a new phone charger as you requested. I also got you some food.”“Thank you, Lola.”“Don’t mention. I want you to go to the washroom and freshen up. Girl you look very rough. Don’t stress I’ll look after your Dad.” she shoves me towards the washroom.I take a quick shower and dress up. I look at myself in the mirror and for the first time in the past 24 hours, I feel a bit better. I hope everything goes well now. I go back to my father’s room and he’s being checked by a team of doctors.“Miss Anna right?”
DAMIENThe warmth of her body against mine lingers even as I lie awake, staring at the ceiling. Anna is asleep again, her breath slow and steady, her fingers still loosely curled around my hand as if she’s afraid I’ll disappear if she lets go.But I know she won’t sleep peacefully for long. Not with what I have to tell her.The weight of it presses down on me like a stone.Lola.How the hell do I tell my wife that I had her childhood best friend arrested?I exhale sharply and turn onto my side, watching Anna’s face in the dim light. She looks too exhausted to handle another heartbreak. But I know I can’t keep this from her.She deserves to know. And it’s going to hurt her.The sun spills through the curtains, casting a soft glow over the room. Anna stirs beside me, stretching slightly before her eyes flutter open. She blinks up at me sleepily, a small smile touching her lips."Morning," she murmurs."Morning, baby," I say, brushing a strand of hair from her face. She nestles closer, r
DAMIENThe bar is dimly lit, the golden glow from the overhead lights reflecting off the half-empty glass of whiskey in front of me. I swirl the liquid absentmindedly, my thoughts far away from this place. Across from me, Evans leans back in his seat, his gaze fixed on me as if he can see straight through my mind."Talk to me, man," he says, breaking the silence. "You're drowning in your thoughts."I exhale sharply, rubbing my temples. "How do I even begin?""The beginning is always a good place."I let out a dry chuckle, shaking my head. "The beginning? If you had told me months ago that I'd be sitting here, thinking about a woman about Anna the way I am now, I would have laughed in your face."Evans smirks, taking a sip of his drink. "And yet, here you are, married and completely whipped."I shoot him a look, but he isn’t wrong. I lean back in my seat, staring into the darkened corners of the bar as memories flood in."When my father’s last wish made me marry her," I begin, my voice
DAMIENI sit on the edge of our bed, Anna’s tearful confession still echoing in my mind. Every word she shared about Lola, every betrayal she uncovered it’s a storm I’m barely holding back. She’s asleep now, her breathing shallow but steady. I don’t even dare to move too far; I’ve kept one hand on hers all night just to feel her warmth and reassure myself that she’s here, safe for now.But I’m not okay.Lola. Vanessa.Nicholas.The names feel like poison, burning through my veins. How could the person Anna trusted be so vile, so calculating? And to think Lola sent that text, the one that had Anna breaking down on the phone. My jaw tightens at the memory.I glance at the clock on my nightstand. It’s 3:42 a.m., but there’s no way I’m sleeping tonight.I carefully slip my hand from Anna’s and get out of bed, pulling on a sweater. My mind is already running scenarios, plans, and ways to quietly and efficiently end this. If I have to burn bridges or make enemies for life to protect her, so
DAMIENI'm greeted by a cacophony of voices when I step into Donovan Firm's sleek, glass-walled office. The bustling energy of the building, the hum of conversations, and the soft click of keyboards contrast starkly with the quiet, intimate world I’ve shared with Anna for the past two weeks.“Welcome back, Mr.Donovan,” my assistant, Jasmine, says brightly. “It’s good to see you again.”“Thank you, Jasmine,” I reply, adjusting my cufflinks. “What’s on the agenda for today?”She hands me a tablet with my packed schedule: " I have a strategy meeting with the board at 10, a financial review at 11:30, and a client luncheon at 1. You also have a meeting with the legal team at 3 and a call with our European branch at 5.”I suppress a sigh. It’s a packed day, but I expected no less after being away for two weeks. As I stride through the open office floor, I catch snippets of hushed whispers.“Did you hear about Mr. Donovan? His wife was kidnapped!”“I heard she’s been traumatised ever since.
ANNAThe morning is serene. Golden sunlight streams through the windows, painting our room in soft hues. Damien, still half-asleep, has his arm draped across my waist, pulling me close. His breathing is steady and comforting, and I savour the warmth of his presence.“Good morning, Mrs.Donovan,” he murmurs, his voice rich and deep, laced with the remnants of sleep.I smile, running my fingers through his messy hair. “Good morning, Mr. Donovan.”He lifts his head slightly, his piercing blue eyes meeting mine. “How are you feeling today? Better?”“I am,” I reply, leaning into the safety of his embrace. “Because of you.”Damien tilts my chin, his lips brushing against mine in a tender kiss. “I’ll always protect you, Anna. No matter what.”His phone buzzes, shattering the peaceful moment. He groans, reaching for it reluctantly.“Work?” I ask, though I already know the answer.“Yeah,” he sighs, rubbing the back of his neck. “I have a meeting I can’t postpone. But I hate leaving you.”I cup
DAMIENA scream shatters the silence of the night. It’s sharp, raw, and filled with so much pain that it jolts me upright in bed. My heart pounds as I turn to Anna, who’s thrashing wildly, caught in the grip of a nightmare. Her cries are broken and desperate, her hands clawing at the air as though fighting off invisible demons.“Anna!” I call out, shaking her gently. “Baby, wake up. It’s just a dream. Wake up!”She doesn’t respond. Her face is damp with sweat, and tears streak down her cheeks as she sobs in her sleep. The sight of her like this a mixture of fear and vulnerability feels like a punch to the gut.“Baby,” I say again, my voice softer but urgent, as I gather her trembling form into my arms. “It’s me, Damien. I’m here. You’re safe.”Her eyes snap open, wild and unfocused before they lock onto mine. She doesn’t seem to recognize me for a second, her body stiff and trembling. Then, like a dam breaking, she collapses against me, sobbing uncontrollably.“I couldn’t get away,” s
ANNAThe car glides to a halt in front of the house, and I spot Miss Rosie standing on the porch, her face etched with worry and hope. Her hands are clasped tightly in front of her, her lips moving silently as though in prayer. The moment Damien steps out of the car and rounds to my side, she’s already descending the steps, rushing toward us like a mother hen reuniting with her chicks.Damien helps me out of the car, his touch firm yet tender. The cool evening breeze brushes against my skin, but his hand is a source of steady warmth, grounding me in this surreal moment of finally being home.“Anna!” Miss Rosie exclaims, throwing her arms around me the moment my feet touch the ground. Her embrace engulfs me, a warm, maternal cocoon I didn’t realize I needed until now. “My child, you’re home! Oh, you’re home.”The floodgates break. I sob into her shoulder, clutching onto her as though letting go would send me back to the nightmare I’d just escaped. “Miss Rosie,” I manage between gasps,
DAMIEN The low hum of the private jet’s engines fills the cabin as we finally leave New York behind. My body aches, and my arm burns where the bullet grazed me, but none of that matters. Anna is seated beside me, her fingers clutching mine like a lifeline. I haven’t let her out of my sight since the rescue, and I have no intention of doing so now.Evans stands a few feet away, speaking in low tones with Don Emilio. They’re strategizing the next steps, but my focus is entirely on Anna. She’s wrapped in a soft blanket, her face pale and her eyes hollow. Even though the ordeal is over, the scars are fresh.“Damien,” she whispers, her voice barely audible over the engines.I turn to her immediately. “I’m here my baby,” I say, squeezing her hand gently. She leans her head against my shoulder, her body trembling slightly. “I don’t know how to thank you,” she murmurs.I kiss the top of her head softly. “You don’t have to thank me,” I reply. “You’re my wife. I’d walk through hell to keep you
ANNAThe rumble of the boat engine fades as Nicholas’s men drag me into yet another damp, cold hideout. My body is trembling from exhaustion, starvation, and the relentless torment Nicholas has inflicted. The faint glimmer of hope I’d held onto is almost extinguished. Every door feels like another step closer to death, but I can’t stop thinking about Damien. Despite everything, his face, voice, and promise to protect me keep me clinging to life.Nicholas’s dark laugh breaks through my thoughts. He stands by the window, barking orders into his phone, his frustration palpable. Something has rattled him.“Boss,” one of his men mutters, stepping inside with a nervous glance. “They’re close. Gusavo’s men are closing in on the docks.”Nicholas’s eyes snap to the henchman, and his jaw tightens. “Gusavo…” he hisses like the name is venom on his tongue. “That rat. Fine. Let them come. I’ll burn this place to the ground with every one of them inside.”The man hesitates. “And… her?” He nods towa
