Hazel

.

.

Four days after Elijah had informed me about the event we had to attend, I gazed at my reflection in the mirror. The long black gown that hugged my frame. The dangling earrings and the sharp red lipstick contrasted with my blond hair. The gown looked beautiful, but I felt different in it.

Was this what Anna would have won? Despite Elijah’s amnesia, I still needed to act in a certain way.

“How do you like the outfit, Luna?” Malia questioned. Elijah had hired her two days back. It seemed he felt more comfortable with her cooking than mine. I couldn’t help but wonder if my cooking was that horrible.

Shaking off the thoughts, I swung around. My bare back, now visible. Although I had lost weight, my curves were still there.

“I think it’s beautiful,” I said, trying to ignore my pale skin that was becoming more pronounced or my eyes that had begun to sink. I’d have to get my medicine as I was looking like a door away from death.

Malia gave a respectful nod. “Alpha Elijah is waiting for you downstairs.”

Picking up my clutch bag, I headed out of the room and down the stairs. My eyes met with Elijah's, who was waiting in the sitting room.

Elijah was clad in a black suit that underscored his masculinity, and over his black suit, a long charcoal overcoat draped elegantly over his shoulders. It wasn’t worn—just rested there, the sleeves left to fall. The sight of him in a suit always struck me in the same way—a twitch in my stomach. The way it made him look powerful. Perhaps it was him that made the suit look powerful.

“I’m ready,” I said, standing before him.

Elijah’s striking eyes darkened as they traced my figure. The intensity was as though he was gulping me in. My stomach twitched again—a sensation I could barely explain.

The tension between us thawed as he quickly shifted his gaze to the expensive watch on his wrist as if he had gazed a moment too long. “We are running late.”

With a nod, I trailed behind him as we left the house. Slipping into the car, we drove out of his mansion to the event. The space between us was filled only by the hum of the engine.

.

.

Standing beneath the chandelier that cast its golden light off the white walls of the hall, my eyes widened, swallowing every detail—the elegant outfits of the guests, the wide smiles on their faces as their chatter filled the air. Seeing this many people made my heart thump in excitement but also made my stomach tighten. What if I embarrass myself? I had never done anything like this.

With Felix by his side, Elijah introduced me as his Luna to people; for someone who had no memory, he played his part well. And for someone who didn’t care about me, he seemed strangely enthusiastic; the way he gently placed his hand on the small of my back, the way his fingertips burnt on my skin. His eyes would light up when he smiled at me.

We had to look like a happy couple. But if I knew it was a pretence, then why did I cling to it? And sometimes images of Nathan would slip in, uninvited—a life I had once dreamed of sharing with him, yet I stood here with Elijah, caught in a pretence that felt too real for comfort.

Their heavy stares nibbled at me. Some with admiration, some with curiosity and the other with skepticism. Many were probably wondering who I was, or how powerful I could be, to become the Luna of New York’s most powerful pack. If only they knew I was just an omega pretending to be another person.

But then I felt it—a nibbling awareness of someone watching me. Since Elijah and I had been here, we had earned the gaze of many others, but this felt different. I could feel the raw emotion behind it.

My gaze traced the sensation, and my breath hitched as my eyes met with Nathan’s. His sharp gaze pierced through me, freezing me. Beside him, a woman—a blonde with blue eyes—leaned into his space, laughing into his ears.

Even without seeing her before, Iimmediately recognized her—she was the one Nathan had been unfaithful with.

The sight of them together robbed me of my breath any my heart twisted in pain. Nathan had always said he never attended such parties; he always sent his Beta, so I hadn’t expected to see him here, let alone with her. Guess it was another lie he had told me.

Amanda—a name I wouldn’t have known if he hadn’t mentioned it while drunk and having sex. With a wide smile on her red-painted lips, her hand slithered around his shoulder.

She was mocking me—reminding me that she had won. A sharp ache shot through me, and the betrayal I thought I had buried came crawling back to the surface.

As Elijah noticed the subtle shift in my demeanour, his eyes trailed mine, and they landed on Nathan. My lips parted in surprise as Elijah slipped his hand around my waist and pulled me closer to him before returning to his conversation.

Nathan’s expression darkened and his eyes dimmed with jealousy as they fell around Elijah’s hands.

As we continued moving around, Elijah’s hands never left my waist as though he was protecting me from Nathan. Elijah’s touch was bolder now, possessive—like I belonged to him. Nathan’s jaw clenched, his darkened eyes lingering, his jealousy laid bare for all to view.

I didn’t know why Nathan was jealous; he had told me I was useless to him. And I didn’t know why Elijah acted this way—not like he cared about me, but his eyes narrowed anytime they met with Nathan. Despite being meters apart, I could taste the tension between them.

The tension got thicker, and having both men stare at me with such intensity clogged my nostrils. I had to pull away; I needed some fresh air.

I tugged at Elijah's coat, and he slinked his head towards me, his hazel eyes boring into mine. “I need to step out.” My voice tightened, maybe from the tension, or from his face so close I could feel the warmth of his breath on my skin.

Quickly I turned around; Elijah didn’t stop me, but his gaze lingered as I left the hall to the outside.

.

I sagged against the wall and jerked my head back, my eyes falling on the empty sky. My feet throbbed from the heels, and my heart was heavy from all the pain it just experienced.

Then Nathan appeared before me, his eyes glazed with all hell fury.

As I tried to walk, Nathan pinned me to the wall. My breath hitched.

“What do you think you are doing?” He growled, his face inches from mine.

As devastation stood before me, I whispered internally, "Moon goddess, save me."
