CHAPTER 4: THE RESCUE.

KAELAN:

My warriors and I were on a regular duty of patrolling our borders every evening when I caught the scent of blood. The rogues’ foul stench was strong and unmistakable, but there was something else. Something faint yet familiar.

“Stay focused and alert,” I ordered my warriors as we followed the trail.

As soon as we turned the corner into the alley, the sight before me made my blood boil. There were three rogues attacking a lone wolf—a woman.

“Enough!” I growled, my Alpha aura washing over them like a wave.

The rogues froze, and their eyes widened as they turned to face me. My warriors flanked me, with low menacing growls.

“Alpha,” one of the rogues stammered, as he started to back away.

“Get out of my territory,” I commanded, with a cold and threatening voice. “Now.”

They didn’t need to be told twice. The rogues took to their heels, their tails between their legs. My warriors wanted to teach the cowards a little lesson but I held them back. Engaging in a combat in front of the girl might frighten her further. Besides, she needed to be taken to the clinic immediately.

I turned my attention to the woman. She was curled on the ground, her breathing shallow. Her scent hit me again, wild flowers and rain soaked earth. The scent was stronger this time, and my wolf surged forward.

Mate.

I crouched beside her and took a thorough look at her. “Are you alright?”

She nodded weakly, looking into my eyes. She probably was a strong woman to be able to withstand the attack of the Wolves but at this point, she looked so vulnerable and I felt something tug at my heart as I carefully brushed the hair from her face. She was injured, her clothes tattered, but as she looked up at me, I could see defiance in her eyes.

“Who are you?” she whispered, with a hoarse voice.

EVERLY:

I looked at the man before me and wondered where he appeared from. He probably was a messenger of the Moon Goddess, as he seemed to radiate power, his amber eyes piercing as he studied me. He was unlike anyone I’d ever seen—tall, broad, with an aura that commanded respect..

“I’m Kaelan,” he said, his tone gentler than before. “Alpha of the Crescent Moon Pack. And you?”

“I’m Everly,” I said softly, wincing as I tried to sit up.

“Don’t move yet,” he said, his voice firm but not unkind. “You’re hurt.”

I shook my head. “I’ll be fine.”

His brow furrowed, and for a moment, he looked worried about me.. “Those rogues attacked you and you almost got yourself killed. Why are you out here alone?”

The question stung more than I expected. “I... I don’t belong to any pack anymore.”

I watched as his expression darkened, and something like anger flashed in his eyes. “What happened?”

I opened my mouth as if to narrate my life’s story but no word came out. I lowered my lashes, fighting back a flood of tears that threatened to spill out.

He watched me for a moment. “They abandoned you?” he asked when he received no response from me.

“I left,” I corrected, my voice barely above a whisper. “It’s... a long story.”

He seemed to imagine my situation, as his gaze softened. “Well, you’re not staying here a minute longer. Come with me.”

I blinked, taken aback. “What?”

“You can’t stay in this alley,” he said simply. “It’s dangerous for you. Come on, my pack will take you in.”

I hesitated for a moment. I found it difficult to trust people these days , especially after what I’d been through. “Why would you do that? You don’t even know me.”

He leaned closer, his eyes locking onto mine. “Well, no one deserves to live like this. And I think the Moon Goddess sent me here for a reason.”

His soothing words stirred something deep in my heart and I felt a flicker of hope I hadn’t felt in months. But I reminded myself that hope was dangerous. It made you vulnerable.

“I don’t need your pity,” I said, my voice firmer than I felt.

He smiled, a small, almost sad smile. “Good. Because I don't feel pity for you, Everly. I’m offering you a chance to rebuild whatever it is your former pack took from you.”

Well a chance was what I needed right now. But the problem was if I was willing to trust him. But with the look of things right now, do I even have a choice? If not for his timely intervention, I would probably be dead by now.

I nodded slowly, my voice soft. “Okay. I'll go with you.”

KAELAN:

I felt relieved when she agreed to come with me. There was a fire in her, even in her broken state, that called to my wolf.

I took her hand and helped her to her feet, supporting her weight as we walked back to the patrol team. She leaned against me, her steps wobbly but determined.

When we reached the others, my Beta, Duncan, raised an eyebrow. “Who’s this?”

“Her name is Everly,” I said in a simple tone, my tone leaving no room for questions. “She’s coming with us.”

Duncan nodded, but I could still see the curiosity in his eyes.

As we made our way back to the Crescent Moon territory, I couldn’t help but glance at Everly every now and then. She was quiet, her gaze focused ahead, but she had a strength that I couldn’t ignore.

Whatever situation that had brought her to that alley, whatever it was that had left her scarred and alone, I would make sure she never felt that way again.

The Moon Goddess doesn’t make mistakes. And I had a feeling She had finally remembered me.

CHAPTER: WELCOME HOME EVERLY: As we stepped into Crescent Moon Pack’s territory, my jaw dropped agape. Kaelan's estate was a sight to behold and the sprawling forest seemed endless with beautiful villages nestled in the heart of the land. There were homes woven seamlessly into nature, occupied by vibrant shifters, both young and old. The lush greenery of this pack seemed to take on a life of its own and the air buzzed with life, making me wish I was part of this world. As we approached the central square, I felt a bit uncomfortable as Wolves of all ages stopped what they were doing and gazed at me with curiosity in their eyes. They welcomed their Alpha with honour and respect but I got nothing but scrutiny. I tightened my grip on Kaelan’s arm as their scrutiny made my skin crawl. “You’re safe here,” Kaelan said softly, as my body stiffened beside him. “Safe isn’t the same as welcome,” I muttered, glancing at the wary faces around us. I clung to his side as we entered his esta

The room was very large and could not be compared with any room I've ever been in. The bed was king-size, and I wondered how I could sleep in that bed alone. The fabric of the sheet looks softer than clouds and I liked how the floor-to-ceiling windows opened onto a private balcony. The room was cozy and warm, and I fell in love with it instantly. “Oh this room is beautiful. It feels like a dream,” I said, standing in the doorway.“You deserve a space where you feel comfortable.” He took my hand gently. “I don't go about bringing random people home.”I found myself stepping closer. “Why are you doing this, Alpha? Why do you care so much?”He hesitated, then focused his gaze on me. “I think the Moon Goddess brought us together for a reason.”I took a deep breath. I could not deny the sincerity in

She was a cautious person and as much as I tried to build a relationship with her, her walls remained firmly in place. I didn't give up and I knew her walls would eventually crack little by little. One afternoon, as I returned from one of my engagements, I found her sitting on a small stool by the edge of the castle, doing laundry. I moved closer to her and was shocked to see the clothes she was washing belonged to Rose, my Beta's mate and her children..“What are you doing?” I asked. She glanced at me, “I'm doing laundry. Welcome Alpha.”“Who told you to do this?” I was livid. “Where is Rose? And Maria?”Even though Everly has not acknowledged me as her mate, the bond is there and no one has the right to disrespect her. Honestly I wasn't willing to offend anyone in this pack. Doing laundry was the least task I handled in my former pack. So why should I feel offended because Rose asked me to wash a few of her clothes? Kaelan obviously didn't like it so I had no choice than to dump the task. He was the Supreme Alpha and his word was law.Sigh.I returned to my room and ate dinner alone. Falling asleep on my fine cozy bed came so easily and I slumbered away until the next morning.I opened my eyes and stretched out my hands, feeling very refreshed. His move was more playful than aggressive, but the force of it sent me sprawling.“Whoa!” I yelped, scrambling back. “Hey! I’m not—"My words died in my throat as my vision blurred, and my bones cracked loudly. Then I felt a surge of power flood through my bones. No, no, no! I tried frantically to stop myself, but it was too late. I was on all fours, before I made sense of what was going on. This was my second time shifting and I was puzzled cuz I thought I was supposed to have control over my wolf. The grey wolf, now looking slightly sheepish, whined and took a step back.“Everly?” Kaelan’s voice sounded quite… intrigued. Then another wolf, a sleek black female, darted forward, and growled playfully. She was obviously challenging me for a spar. My wolf responded in kin

He has assured me on several occasions that I was safe with him.I actually liked Kaelan, despite the fact that he looked very intimidating.“What are you thinking about?” He asked suddenly, as if he read my thoughts.“Nothing.” I responded quietly. After a thought, I said, “I'm just wondering how I went from being a homeless werewolf to being here with the Alpha King.”Kaelan chuckled. “It's fate, Everly. The Moon Goddess has already destined it.”I nodded. I think I actually believe him.We chatted over minor issues, and I was really beginning to feel at home when someone made a throaty cough behind us. Someone knocked at the door and snapped me out of my thoughts. Before I could answer, Kaelan walked in. The only explanation I could come up with was my refusal to let her go to battle with me.“You know, Everly, time will come when we'll go to battles together, side by side, defending our throne, our people and our love. I walked into my study and collapsed on the sofa, feeling totally drained. The events of today were definitely something to worry about and it weighed heavily on my shoulders. I sat in my study, and stared at the map of our territory spread out before me. Duncan soon walked in and stood nearby, his expression grim."The timing of this attack," I said, breaking the silence. "It’s too convenient."Duncan nodded. "You’re thinking someone inside the pack tipped them off?""Not just anyone," I said, my jaw tightening. "A member of the displeased Council members might have thought to put me on edge."Duncan’s eyes widened. "That’s a serious accusation, Alpha.""I don’t make accusations lightly," I said. "How many are they?""At least twenty," Duncan said. "But there could be more. Marcus appears to be... organizing them."Marcus. This is a bit serious. Rogues were typically scattered, and disorganized, and most times they acted on impulse. The fact that Marcus was involved meant they have strategized and that could be trouble.I turned to Everly, “I've got to go, my love.”“Can I come with you?”“No. Not even in your dream.”“But I could be of help,” she said with pleading eyes. “Please.”“The answer is no.
