‘So this is how it feels…’
Random thoughts kept lingering on Chris’ mind, as if someone else is controlling it. He sees several memories, some happy, and most are the saddest moments of his life. He closed his eyes. He could almost feel every moment again, like it is currently happening.
Chris is being embraced by the demon or at least, that’s how Chris perceives it. He was being enveloped by the demon’s darkness. He doesn’t feel any physical pain, only the utter silence and coldness which he unusually feels refuge. He thinks it was ridiculous, he really thought that the demon would bite him or anything similar to feed on him.
His mind starts to wander, he wanted to see them more. Even though he is well aware that it was all in the past. He simply wanted to see them again; alive and smiling at each other like all other “head-over-heels to each other” couples. He missed it, how long has it been since he saw it?
The memories suddenly blurred, he feels like he’s been dragged away. He extended his hands, trying to reach for it, but the force is too strong for him to resist. The memory completely faded in his sight and was replaced by the memories he recently earned.
He heard the news of his parents being killed by cruel people, it repeated over and over again until he couldn’t think of anything but the fact that he wanted to serve them justice; that he wanted the people behind this to die like what happened to his dear parents.
“Why does it have to be them?” He mumbled. Tears are escaping from his firmly closed eyes.
The demon detached itself from the human. Damien saw how wrath fuels on the Chris’ eyes as soon as he opened it. Demons corrupt humans by tapping into their minds, finding their deepest desires and translate it into sinful acts.
Tears continued to flow on the human’s face. Damien grinned, Chris’ miserable state proves him how worth his five years of wait.
Chris watched how the demon’s appearance changed before his eyes. The black fog that always surrounds the demon is as if being absorbed back to its body. Chris is too pre-occupied to be even amazed but he must admit to himself that he is curious with what is happening. It continued until the black fog finally reveals a man with strong features. Chris first noticed the demon’s eyes which are very dark, much like the fog that previously surrounds him.
“Surprised?” Damien spoke. His voice also changed, still deep but it sounded human.
Damien looks like a human, with a very dangerous aura. Chris stared at him with a flat expression. He would never admit that he’s astounded. The demon already played with his emotions earlier, he won’t let the demon to completely control him.
“So you copied a human’s face?” He replied.
The demon laughed, “Now you have a sharp tongue, this is my real face. I am the original.” Damien answered. He sat on the couch then crossed his legs lazily and like an arrogant king would do.
“Then why didn’t you reveal it in the past? Is it also part of the contract?” Chris just wanted to supply answers to his curiousness, or maybe he’s just trying to divert his attention to the fact that his parents died and he just sold his soul to a demon.
He felt suffocated just with the mere thought of not seeing his parents anymore. So many things he wanted to say and do for them but now all of it is gone. He cannot revert back the time, but he can do something in the present.
“Nope,” he leaned forward and pointed his face, “This is my appearance from the start. Your human eyes just can’t see it. You’re a bit special, because you can see me but not entirely. Now that we’re in a contract, you can now see me as well as other creatures like me in clear form, isn’t that amazing?” Chris felt annoyed, now that he can see Damien’s face he can now see how smug his face is.
“Tell me what you know.” Chris ordered. He doesn’t have enough time to fool around.
“Hmm,” the demon grinned, “What should I know?” Chris hands are already balled into fists. He couldn’t control his emotions, he’s angry that Damien sees his tragedy as an amusing thing. He knows that he’s a demon, Chris is aware that they are cruel creatures and it is exactly what the demon is waiting to happen to ruin him. But he is still angry even with all that knowledge.
“Stop playing innocent with me, I’m not dumb. I know that this is what you have been anticipating!” Chris exclaimed. He’s losing his patience.
“Can you calm down? Damn, why does it have to be wrath your deadly sin? I have to deal with hot headed kids for years. You humans are so attracted with it.” Damien clicked his tongue and stared right into Chris’ eyes, “I don’t have anything to do with your parents’ death. Don’t growl on me like a hound.”
“I didn’t ask if you’re innocent, I want to know everything that you know about my parents’ death. All of it.” Chris tone is firm, but the demon sees it as a child trying to scare a wolf.
Damien scoffed, “You said you’re not dumb, are you sure about that?” Chris didn’t respond and simply glared at him.
“Maybe you just chose to be blind? Or you’re simply an innocent child. With the sudden wealth your family acquired, do you really think that your parents are simply working as office employees in some company?” The demon’s playful grin is back. Damien saw how Chris’ expression changed from furious to plain confused.
“What do you mean?” Chris asked.
Damien sighed dramatically, “Do I have to spell everything to you? They are lying to you. Go check their room and find out for yourself.” The demon challenged Chris.
Chris didn’t answer and stormed his way towards the kitchen and rummaged through the drawers. He sprinted towards his parents’ room as soon as he found the master keys in the drawers. His parents always locked the door of their room. Chris never asked why nor tried to enter their room.
The room is peaceful when he entered, too peaceful. He started to find whatever Damien is talking about in the drawers, in the closet and even underneath the bed but he didn’t find anything suspicious.
“What the hell is he talking about?” He mumbled to himself. His eyes went to the family portrait hanging on the wall, his heart started thumping hard. He approached the portrait and started removing it with trembling hands.
His hunch was right. A vault is behind the portrait. Chris sighed, mostly to stop himself from crying again and because he realized how dumb he is just like what Damien said. He slid the cover of the keypad and stared at the numbers. He realized that he has to figure out the passcode to open the vault.
He immediately tried a combination of the days of his and his parents’ birthday but the vault failed to open. Chris bit his lower lip, he shouldn’t be careless or it might end up locking. He sat on the bed as he starts to figure out the possibilities of what the passcode is. He didn’t know how many tries he still has so it has to be certain.
Maybe the passcode he entered is right but just in a wrong order? Chris kept overthinking as he starts to mentally list all possible combinations including his parents’ wedding date.
He’s about to try putting his parents’ wedding date when he realized and remembered something. If they are hiding something then they wouldn’t put a passcode that is easy to figure out like important dates and such.
Chris remembered his younger self asking what is the date engraved in his mother’s wedding ring since he knows that it is not his parents’ wedding date.
Her mother smiled and ruffled Chris’ hair, “It is the date when your father and I first met. The date is also engraved in your father’s ring.”
Chris racked his brain trying to remember the date. It’s been years since he saw it and he doesn’t have the best memory. Chris took a deep breath before blindly punching the date he barely remembers.
‘032100’
The vault produced a sound then a soft click. Chris felt his knees giving out, thank goodness that he remembered the right date. He opened the vault and took out everything inside the container. He immediately checked the thick documents in several folders.
The demon is right. All this time he was a clueless fool.
“I assume you have the answers you wanted?”
“I’ll kill them.” Chris muttered, purely out of blind anger. He checked the documents once again. He couldn’t grasp the entirety of his parents’ work but he is certain that they are killed because of it.“Heh, you should see them first before you do that.” Damien materialized beside him and handed over his phone, “Someone called you earlier when you are all frantic searching for the truth. The man over the phone told me that he's a close friend of your parents, from the company they are working from.” The demon grinned after seeing Chris’ reaction. There is obvious distrust in his eyes, he now sees everyone as an adversary.“You talked to them? What did you tell them about you?” Chris had to ask, he simply can’t explain Damien’s existence to people. The demon rolled his eyes, “I told them the simplest lie, that I’m your friend. What, do you really think I would go aro
“Please take your seats.” The man inside said. Chris politely sat, he’s not nervous as he was earlier but he still can’t do eye contact to any of them. He is afraid that he would reveal every weakness he has the moment he meets their eyes. “Welcome to Fantasia, Chris. It’s your first time going here, am I right?” The man greeted. He only sees the man in internet pictures, the CEO and founder of Fantasia Co., Henry Davis. Chris estimated that the man is already in his early 60’s. From the articles that he had read in the past, he is known to be a generous man. The company always does numerous charity events, environmental campaigns and all sorts. But it’s a lot different now that he’s facing the CEO. He looks very intimidating even with the old age. “My mother brought me here once, but it was for a short time. It was back when they just got employed.” Chris answered in detail. He remembered being introduced to other employees but he can’t recall their faces an
“Chris.” Kurt immediately approached his friend. Chris stood and welcomed the newcomers. He could see his other classmates arriving one by one. Chris figured that they came here as soon as the class dismissal since they are still wearing their uniform. It was his parents’ wake which is organized by Henry, just like what he promised. The same man that escorted him arrived to his house again, fetched him then brought him in the funeral parlor. It’s been hours but he didn’t dare looking at his parents from the casket. He knew that he would cry again so he chose not to. He still had to accept visitors. He haven’t seen the demon today, he assumes that Damien sees this event as boring. He is thankful too, because he wouldn’t have to deal with his daily dose of taunting. “Our condolences, Chris. Our adviser also said that she will come later.” One of his classmates, their class president spoke. Chris smiled, it didn’t reach his eyes but he’s trying to be as
The demon that Damien called as Linus is smiling arrogantly. Linus is still busy feeding from Joaqin who’s obviously flustered. Everyone could see how his face is flushing, from embarrassment or anger, Chris can’t really tell. Joaqin pushed Linus away after regaining his composure. The demon laughed merrily, “You’re blushing!” “Shut up demon.” Chris knows that it is wrong to judge people from their first meeting, but Linus is getting on his nerves. He’s more arrogant than Damien! Linus didn’t mind Joaqin’s burst out, “Miss me?” Linus said with a playful smile. Damien snorted, “As if. It’s been a while though. I really thought you were killed somewhere.” Linus pursed his lips like a child sulking to his parents. “What’s with the cold treatment? Here I am so excited to meet you again after…5 years? Or was it 7?” Both Chris and Joaqin totally felt out of place, both are asking why they in their current situation. Joaqin cl
Chris fixed his tie as they prepare for the funeral. The wake is over and the funeral is quickly held. Some of Chris’s classmates are present and most are his parents’ colleagues. He tried hard to memorize each faces that came to his parents wake so he would know if there are new faces that would attend the funeral. He saw Fidel approaching with 3 other people he’s not familiar with. Chris is sure that they didn’t attend the wake. “Hello. It’s probably your first time seeing us but your parents told many good things about you, especially Melissa. She’s so proud of you.” The only woman in the group spoke, “we’re in the same team as your parents and Fidel.” Chris’ attention is quickly piqued by her words. He immediately observed each person in the group. The woman who approached him looks a bit younger than her mother. Her short hair made her look more sophisticated and her smile is quite intimidating. “I’m Leila Forbes,” the woman extended her hands fo
“What’s with that outfit?” Chris grimaced. Damien is wearing an oversized sweater, and large eyeglasses. Damien placed the laptop bag he’s holding at Chris’ study table and quickly retaliated, “You don’t have any fashion sense in you so don’t you dare critique my outfit.” Chris rolled his eyes but he’s curious to what is up. Damien pulled the laptop out and casually sat beside Chris on the bed. Chris crossed his legs and waited for the demon to settle. He still wonders where the demon gets all of his things but Chris knows that the demon wouldn’t answer decently so he won’t bother asking. He doesn't want to induce more stress to himself. “What are you doing?” Chris asked as Damien opens the laptop. He is too curious to wait patiently. Damien pulled out the flash drive he stole from Fantasia, “We’ll check the flash drive now.” Damien answered and plugged the flash drive. “I have my own laptop you know.” Chris answered and pointed his laptop placed on t
Leila stared at Chris’ face, she could almost see Melissa in him. Chris, without a doubt, is her son. Melissa always says that they should protect Chris if ever something happened to her and Christopher. Leila would often dismiss their conversation by saying that all of them would surely live a long life. She even remember saying a week before they died that Melissa would still see her grand children’s children. She didn’t expect that they would really depart early. She immediately broke down after hearing the news. They are her good friends, she treats Melissa as her older sister more than her own kin. She couldn’t imagine how it feels for Chris. He’s still young to be an orphan. “Melissa saved my life.” She said as a response to Chris’ question. “I used to have a trashy life back when I haven’t arrived at Fantasia. My family already abandoned me, I’m in a very toxic romantic relationship and I do all sorts of illegal things to survive. I knew that I don’t h
“Finally full.” The demon said contentedly and detaches himself from Chris. The human didn’t answer and used his limited time to recover. He immediately stood and went on his way downstairs. “Be careful on your way to school.” Damien grinned sweetly. Chris rolled his eyes, all he can feel is disgust. “Stop taunting me. Gather some info while I’m out.” He ordered. The demon laughed, “who are you to boss me around?” Damien said and disappeared. “Useless demon.” He mumbled before going out. “Woah, you’re really here.” Kurt reacted like Chris didn’t mention it to him yesterday, “are you… okay now?” Kurt asked. “Let’s not talk about it,” Chris answered and started walking, “I wanted to divert my attention that’s why I went back early.” He said, just like what the demon told him. Kurt nodded, “Okay, I won’t ask any more questions about it.” He grinned and hanged his arms to Chris’ neck, the latter had no choice but to duck as Kurt is shorter
Kurt impatiently waited for the bus to arrive at its designated stop. He would run towards Chris’ house if he needs to, but he knows that commuting will be lot faster. He dashed his way out of the bus and towards Chris’s house. He even bumped to some people because of his rush.He kept on calling Chris on his way but his phone is already turned off.“What is wrong with you?!” he exclaimed as he catches his breath. He’s still trying to walk as fast as he can. Kurt eventually arrived at Chris’ house, he pressed the doorbell numerous times but no one responded. Kurt’s heart is beating fast, both from running like crazy and from worry. He sighed, he has no other choice then. He punched the passcode to open the gates. It was disclosed to him by Chris ages ago.He run towards the front door and he found it open. He pushed the door and entered inside.“Chris.” He called but no one responded, “Chris wher
Kurt couldn't concentrate on class. Chris didn’t show up on class again and it’s worrying him to death. He already flooded him with messages but Chris didn’t reply to any of his chats. He impatiently tapped his foot as he discreetly checked his phone for any reply. He didn’t know why but he’s getting more and more anxious as time slowly passed by.“What’s happening to you Chris?” he mumbles. They just talked yesterday, and Chris even said that he’ll explain why he has to go already today.Kurt is already losing his mind. Something feels off and he just knows it.He checked his phone again after the teacher turned his head to write something in the board. His eyes widened, Chris finally replied!“Happy Birthday Kurt. Thank you for everything.” He read the message. Kurt felt a pang in his chest.“No…” he mumbled and stood. Everyone's eyes went to him when he
Chris woke up with a heavy head. He couldn’t even remember how he fell asleep. He feels wasted even though he didn’t drink. The first thing he did as soon as he got up is to check his phone. He was expecting for any update but he didn’t get any. He heaved a sigh, it’s just like the first weeks when he was waiting for any updates on his parents’ case to come up.He’s getting so tired of this set up.People would give him hope then makes him wait and then something will be up and they will be back to square one again. The cycle continues. He waited enough.“I’m tired.” He mumbled. He’s tired in every aspect possible. He went downstairs to eat. He doesn’t have the energy to, nor that he sees any reason to but he’s still human. He has to eat so he could survive for the mean time.“I thought you die on your sleep.” Chris’ face immediately soured. Seeing Damien early in th
Chris still wanted to bury himself because of embarrassment, day already passed and he’s still blushing from the mere thought of him crying in front of Kurt. What more is that he instantly broke when Kurt yelled at him. Chris literally buried his face to his pillow.“I’m such an idiot.” He mumbled to himself. He knows that he didn’t cry because Kurt yelled at him, but because of how much effort it took for him not to confide everything to Kurt. He hates how weak he gets whenever he’s with Kurt.“Are you planning to die in there?” He heard Damien’s voice. Chris’ head is still buried in his pillow.“Wait!” Chris suddenly lifted his head. Damien’s attention went back to the human. Chris immediately took his phone from being charged and checked the calendar.“What is it?” Damien curiously asked. Chris sighed and buried his head on the pillow once again. He heard the demo
“That killer officially pissed me off.” The demon is obviously furious. Chris could see the black smoke that used to surround Damien back when Chris couldn’t see his true form. He distanced himself from the demon as he was feeling the familiar suffocating sensation whenever Damien just fed. The demon continued rambling while following Chris. Would Damien come with him in the classroom?Chris sighed as he walked towards his classroom. He was scolded for entering the elementary building when it wasn’t allowed for cutting classes. It’s the first time, so the teachers are visibly worried about him. His teachers are noticing that he’s been usually spacing out in classes lately. They must be thinking that he was acting up because of what happened in his life. They aren’t wrong, but for a different reason. Chris was asked several times, but he dodged their questions and simply apologized for his actions. He even has to go to detention later.
“Could demons get drunk too?” Joaqin asked out of the blue. He turned to Linus who’s busy checking the fridge for food. Linus momentarily stopped his snack search and looked at Joaqin with questioning eyes. They have been together for a while but the demon never saw Joaqin drink.Joaqin stared at him while waiting for Linus’ answer, “we don’t.” Linus answered with an arrogant grin, “why? Are you asking me to drink with you?”Joaqin nodded, “Yeah. It’s exactly what I’m implying.” Joaqin could see Linus’ surprised reaction. He chuckled, is it so unusual that he’s inviting a demon to drink with him?Linus eventually laughed, “You’re challenging the wrong demon.” Joaqin stood and took out bottles of liquor he’s stocking. He brought four bottles and placed it on the table. He then took out two glasses. The demon shrugged and took out some food and sat bes
“Are you going to school today?” That’s the context of the messages he got when he checked his phone. The messages are from Kurt and Leila. Chris checked the time before he replied. He woke up earlier than his alarm again. He replied the same thing to them. He’s still going to school, he has to. Chris thinks that it’s better to be surrounded by people, instead of moping around the house the whole day. He needed to stay sane until he was able to serve his revenge. Hell he cares what happens after.Leila is the first one to reply saying that Eugene would pick him up. He sighed and simply replied thank you. Kurt’s reply came right after he replied to Leila. Chris scratched his head after reading Kurt’s long message. Kurt is reminding him to eat and drink his meds before he goes to school and even linked a recipe for a healthy breakfast. He did his morning routine while actually considering the recipe Kurt had sent.
Chris woke up with a heavy head. It’s been a week but his body still hasn’t recovered from what happened. He kept thinking of the memories he saw from Troy’s mind. He wrote it the other day while pretending to study. He continued repeating it on his mind too. Chris is convinced that there must be something in those memories that could lead him to the truth, if only he’s strong enough to last longer.“You’re still thinking about that?” Damien appeared beside him. He’s sitting on the edge of the bed and there are a lot of spaces but the demon chose to squeeze him in. Chris sighed but stayed still, he already knew what Damien wanted to do. The demon started feeding on him, just like what he expected. He simply closed his eyes. It’s been physically draining him more than in the past.“It’s getting tiring…” Chris thought. He knows that the demon could also hear his thoughts.
Damien materialized elsewhere after cutting Chris’ little trip in Troy’s memories. He didn’t even expect Chris to last that long. Humans aren’t supposed to do it for long because it will drain their energy but Chris lasted with sheer willpower. It didn’t only drained Chris but also him. Angels could easily do it but they are advised to only use it during emergency situations. It is a labor for an exiled like him.He could’ve fed from Chris but he might kill his host if he did, he would, but not until their contract is fulfilled. He walked around to find someone to feed on, but he saw Xavier instead. The angel looked at him with the usual disgusted look.“I’m not in the mood to deal with you today so out of my way.” Damien spoke first. He’s not in the perfect condition to piss off an angel. Xavier didn’t budge and continued blocking the demon’s path.“Why? Scared that I will kill
