Second Year College, 2016
The bell rings signaling the end of class.
"Guys, don't forget your papers are due this Friday. It's been the second time the submission is pushed back. There will be no more extension after that," the professor said.
"Hi Trevy," Samantha greeted Trevor in a sweet tone.
As usual, Trevor gets thrilled every time Samantha comes closer and especially when she calls him "Trevy". He's the typical uninteresting nerdy guy in campus and his story is as typical as he is – he's head over hills for Samantha, the it girl in school who also wants to establish the reputation of being beauty and brains that she tries to achieve by dominating the school's beauty contests and using others like Trevor to do her assignments and projects.
"Hi Sam," Trevor responded. He's so mesmerized.
"Awww….so sweet of you to call me by my nickname. Not everyone gets to call me that," she said.
"Really, Sssam?" he said in a trembling voice. He feels so lucky like he won the lottery just by that.
"You heard Professor Yoon's announcement, right?" Samantha asked. She shifted the topic abruptly.
"Yes. The deadline of the papers is this Friday," he answered.
"Are you sure you'll be finished with my paper by Thursday night? I want to add some personal inputs to that," Samantha asked.
"Of course. It will be ready by then," Trevor said to assure her.
"Ohh, you really are the best, Trevy! I don't know what to do without you," she continued to praise him.
"I know you've tons of things to do as well," he said.
"Yeah. I need to have my hair and nails treatments done before the concert. Gosh, those two procedures take a lot of time," she said.
"The concert. I'm really excited to come with you so I need to make sure this paper is off your plate immediately so we can enjoy," he said.
"Us? Enjoying the concert? Ahhh…of course, of course," she said.
Billie sits near Trevor. He's organizing his books inside his bag and unintentionally hears the conversation. He knows what's going on.
"Oh hi, Billie!" Samantha greeted him to start ending the conversation with Trevor.
"Hello, Samantha," Billie responded.
"What's with 'Samantha'? Just call me 'Sam'," she said.
Billie smiled. "I'm having lunch in the canteen. Are you guys staying here longer?" he asked the two.
"I'm going to lunch too. My friends are there already in the canteen," she said.
"How about you, Trevor. C'mon, let's eat first," he asked him.
"Oh, Trevy needs a little more time. He's rushing some papers. He can join a little later," she said.
Billie looked to Trevor.
"I'll catch up with you," Trevor said.
In the canteen, the girls are thrilled seeing Billie and Samantha entering together.
"Oh, new pair?" one girl asked.
"Hi, ladies," Billie politely greeted Samantha's friends.
"Are you going to watch the concert, Billie?" another friend of Samantha asked.
"Yes. I'm coming with my friend," he said to close the topic.
"Girlfriend?" Samantha asked. She looks a little intrigued.
Billie just smiled. "Oh, I'll save this seat for Trevor. He' coming shortly. I'll go order," he said.
"He's a little snob, isn't he?" one of the girls asked.
Billie heard it. He just shook his head.
"I think he's just playing mysterious but it's fine. It suits him," Samantha said.
"How about you and Trevor? I heard you're going to the concert together," her friend said.
All the other girls giggle.
"Sssshh…shut up. Others might hear you. Of course, I'm not," she said.
While waiting for his turn to be served, Billie watches the girls as they laugh non-stop. He can even see Samantha mimicking Trevor's mannerism. He feels bad for him.
He calls Zofi on the phone.
"Hey, what are you doing Friday night?" he asked.
"Wow, what a random question," Zofi said.
"C'mon, are you free?" he asked.
"I have exams on Monday so I better study starting Friday night," she said.
"We can study on weekends. Come with me to this concert in our campus. We have a mission," he said.
Zofi's eyes got wider upon hearing the word 'mission'. They haven't had one recently.
"Okay, count me in," she said.
Come Thursday afternoon, Samantha's paper is ready. Trevor made sure to finish earlier than what he promised.
"My goodness, this is so good! Thanks, Trevy!" Samantha said.
"It's nothing. Your topic is interesting and smart," Trevor said.
"I will read it tonight and add some of my inputs," she said. What she actually means is she will study the paper so she will sound like as if she created it herself when asked about it.
"Excited about the concert?" Trevor asked with more confidence now. He knows he's good shot to Samantha because of the favor.
"Ah yeah. Great. See you there," she answered with less enthusiasm.
"What do you think I should wear. Can you tell me or better come shop with me?" he asked.
Samantha closed her eyes.
"I told you the other day that I'd have my treatments today so I can't shop with you. But if you wanted my advice, I'd recommend that you buy from any high end store inside the mall. Anything above $100 is okay," she said.
"$100? That's a lot of money for an outfit," he said.
"Oh, if it's just me, I'm fine with anything you want to wear. Even this one you're wearing right now is no problem with me. I'm all for simple things. However, other pretentious concert goers might make fun of you if you dressed simple and I don't like that to happen," she said.
Trevor is touched by Samantha's concern.
"Before I go, can I have our tickets?" she asked.
Trevor got one of the tickets he purchased for them.
"I mean both tickets," she said.
"But why?" he asked.
Samantha sighed. "Of course, I want to make sure that you will show up tomorrow. I don't want to be stood up," she explained.
"I won't do that to you," he said.
"Sorry but I have trust issues. Just make sure to meet me at the entrance. Let's text, okay?" she said.
The day of the concert comes. Everyone can't wait for the bell to ring signaling the end of class.
Zofi waits at the gate of Billie's university. She looks every inch an it girl going to a concert. She doesn't mind onlookers.
"Fi!" Billie called her.
Zofi showed off her get up for a moment before Billie pulled her inside.
"You look stunning," he said.
"Thanks. Where's your friend?" she said.
"He's there at the entrance of the auditorium," he said.
"Is that him? Trevor?" Zofi asked. She feels sad instantly for that lanky guy with boring haircut walking away from the venue. His lack of confidence speaks volume in the way he carries himself. His outfit looks pricey but does only a little to improve his overall look.
"Trevor!" Billie called him.
Trevor responded immediately. It's the first time someone noticed and greeted him in the event.
"Where are you going?" Billie asked.
"I'm going home now," Trevor said.
"But why? Are you not feeling okay?" Billie asked.
Trevor shook his head.
Billie and Zofi glanced at each other.
"By the way…," Billie started to introduce Zofi to him.
"Hi, Trevor! I'm Zofi," Zofi quickly introduced herself interrupting Billie.
"Hi, Zofi," Trevor said. He's obviously no longer in the mood for fun.
"Nice shirt!" Zofi said. By now, it's too late to do a makeover so she tries to lift up his spirit by complimenting what's nice about him or on him.
"Thanks, Zofi. I broke the bank for this outfit," Trevor said.
"Then why are you leaving?" she asked.
Trevor is shy to answer,
"Billie, would you mind getting us something to drink," she said so she could be alone with Trevor without him hinting they are doing something for him.
"Sure, I will. I think my friend could use some refreshments," Billie said.
"Hey, Trevor. Did you come here with a date?" she asked Trevor in a volume that's meant to be heard by others.
Trevor turned from sad to confused.
Zofi acts like a flirty, carefree girl to draw attention to other concert goers.
"I thought I had a date with someone but she stood me up. She got my ticket too and have her friend bring this ticket to me but it's in the bleacher not the near the stage," he said sounding like a loser.
"Oh, actually, it's perfect. I would thank her for that," she said.
Billie came back with refreshments.
"Billie, would you be kind to exchange your stage side seat with Trevor's? I think this guy's so fun to be with in this concert?" she asked.
Billie pretends to be surprised and sad that he's forced to give up his seat.
"Oh, you don't have to do that," Trevor said to Billie.
"It's settled. Let's go inside. Thanks, Billie for the drinks and the ticket. See you later!" Zofi said while almost pulling Trevor inside the venue.
Onlookers are both amazed that Trevor got a date for the concert and curious about Zofi who dumped Billie for him.
Billie smiled. He knows their plan is working and Zofi is nailing it.
Inside the venue, Samantha couldn't believe when she saw Trevor enter the venue with Zofi and they sit much nearer to the stage.
During the concert, Zofi performs her mission even better. She gets noticed by the vocalist.
"Hey, Ms. Fashionista, are you from this school?" the vocalist asked her from the stage.
They focus Zofi on the projector. She looks cute on screen.
"Nope! But my date is," she answered.
"Who's the lucky guy?" the vocalist asked.
Zofi points to Trevor. "His name is Trevor, sophomore, BS Management," she said.
"Lucky guy!" the vocalist said.
The rest of the band acted like they were jealous while Trevor is being shown on the screen.
Trevor's confidence fired up. He smiled for the first time.
Samantha's face is blank. She doesn't look anywhere while the crowd cheers for Trevor.
"That's so nice of you, Zofi," Trevor said.
"It's nothing. On Monday, Billie will do something. Just go with the flow," she told him.
"What is it?" he asked.
Zofi just winked.
The following Monday, Billie pretends to be cold towards Trevor.
"Dude, are you mad at me or something?" Trevor asked him right after the class is dismissed.
Samantha and her friends heard Trevor asking Billie. They stay in the classroom pretending to wait for the others to leave first.
"Well, don't mind me. I'm just not over the fact that Zofi set me aside for you in the concert," Billie said.
"Don't be jealous. We're just friends. She gave me some pointers to dress up and carry myself and I think it's working already. I'm meeting someone this afternoon," Trevor said.
"Well, good for us then. Make sure it's not Zofi," Billie said.
"Definitely not her. We can go on double date soon," Trevor suggested with excitement.
Samantha left the room immediately.
It's another mission accomplished for Billie and Zofi.
"How's he?" Zofi asked Billie about Trevor.
"Oh, he's over the moon. You should've see him today," he said.
"Actually, I'm more curious how that girl – Samantha is after the concert last Friday," she asked.
"Well, I don't pay much attention to her but for sure, she still regrets doing it to him," he said.
"Yeah. Trevor's not bad at all. He just needs some advice on how to look smart. He's got the brains to begin with," she said.
"Hmm…are you liking him?" he asked.
"He's likeable but…oh my God, don't start. I know where this is going," she said.
"Defensive?" he continued to tease her.
"Jealous? she countered.
"Why would I?" he asked.
"It's obvious," she said.
"I'm not," he said.
"Okay," she said.
The bickering goes on and on and on.
Month after college graduation, 2018The students start to vacate the dormitory. Ms. Molly looks teary eyed seeing them preparing to leave. She is the dorm's sweet landlady who takes care of her tenants like her own little sisters or nieces. She's an only child who naturally inherited the property from her parents upon their demise.Ms. Molly is single, childless, and almost a golden girl. Despite looking younger than her age, she cannot be spared from being referred to as a spinster. Her friends are those she met in Zumba classes. They are either spinsters or widows."You don't need to hurry, Zofi. You can stay until next week free of charge. That's my graduation gift to you," she told Zofi."Oh, thanks, Ms. Molly! I've so many stuff to pack," Zofi said."So, what do you plan to do now? Vacation? Job hunt? Masters?" Ms. Molly asked. "Vacation but more of rest, I guess. I'm just not ready to plunge into what they call as the real world. I'll stay under the wings of my parents
Zofi's First Job, 2019It is like the first day of school only even better. Everything is new – shoes, bag, dress, and an ATM card! "I hope you can be settled soon. Your desk and pedestal cabinets are both new," the HR manager said. "Thank you! I feel so excited to work. It' so much better here than in school," Zofi said. The people around look to each other as if saying she doesn't know what she's up to. "Let her discover and learn on her own. For now, let her enjoy the honeymoon stage at work," one of her senior colleagues said.Come midmorning, everyone is already busy working while Zofi finds herself bored reading the company manual. She feels like she is back in school again. She decided to approach the most senior in the team to offer help."Hi, Ms. Mitch. Do you need help? Photocopying? Sorting? Filing?" she asked.Ms. Mitch smiled. "Oh, dear. Here, everyone is independent. We don't ask anyone to do things for us. Keep that in mind so you won't be taken advantage of,"
Summer, 2019"You're working on weekends now?" Billie asked Zofi. The two next door neighbors now."We have teambuilding," Zofi said."Ah, you should be ready with your ideas for mission/vision," he said."Oh, it's actually more of bonding," she said."Your HR plans teambuilding that way?" he said."Well, it's just our unit doing this. Ms. Mitch thought it would be best for the team to go out and bond on one weekend. They haven't done it for so long," she said."Okay, then. I'm the only one who's going to pick up Saatchi from the airport," he said."Why does it have to be you? I mean, does she have no relatives?" she asked."Because she's staying in our house. She's our guest," he explained."Alright. You're close," she said."You still don't you like her, do you?" he asked."Oh, I think it's the other way around," she said."Alright then, let's not meet this weekend," he said.Saturday comes. Billie waits early in the airport. He's not sure how Saatchi looks now. It's been years s
Zofi has been staring at the colorful cotton candy for a few minutes now. "Are you feeling guilty too?" Billie asked. "I feel bad for her. I didn't know she liked you that much," Zofi said. The two sit on the bench near the Ferris Wheel. The amusement park is full of young people like them who probably have not yet entirely moved on from being kids. "We could've enjoyed the rides with her. I feel her loneliness," she said. "I know. And considering the mission that we've done for others, I feel I abandoned her," he said. Zofi pats Billie's back. "Don't be so hard on yourself. It's not your fault if you don't feel the same way for her," she said. "There's too much going on inside my head this past week," he said. "I haven't been a bother to you lately so besides the situation with Saatchi, what else has been bothering you?" Zofi asked. Billie becomes quiet. "C'mon, tell me," she said. Billie sighed. "Cindy hasn't returned my calls or messages this entire week," he said.
Billie and Zofi sit on the couch looking at the TV. They're not watching. They're just staring at it. "Do you want anything to munch or drink? Softdrinks? Juice?" Billie asked. Zofi grabbed one throw pillow and hugs it. "Are we going to pass the night like this?" he asked. "Tell me why were you sad yesterday. I see you're still sad until today," Zofi asked. "Then, tell me why did you go to your parents' house," he asked. Zofi sighed. "I was devastated and I couldn't go to you because you were unreachable and I recalled you telling me last night that you already had so much in your head, I shouldn't add up to that," she said. "I'm sorry," he apologized. "Is it still about her?" she asked. Billie nodded. He can't say anything after that. "You don't have to tell me now if you're not ready yet," she said. Billie is still quiet. "I think I'm hungry now. Let eat whatever you have in your fridge," she said. "Cindy married his employer," he said quickly. His eyes start to te
Zofi wiped traces of pizza sauce off Billie’s mouth. They spent the night airing out each other’s heartaches until he fell asleep on the couch without brushing his teeth. It moved her to smile seeing him messed up, a far cry from his usual self. “Shoot, I slept with pizza sauce in my mouth,” Billie said after waking up and tasting the pizza sauce on his mouth. “You're so gross,” Zofi began joking. “Give me your phone,” Billie asked. “My phone? Oh, you’re lucky, I forgot to take a photo of your helpless moment,” she said. “C’mon, give it to me. I don’t trust you,” he said. Zofi giggles more. She once took a photo of him in an awkward pose and showed it to others. He learned his lesson to be always careful. “You’re invading my privacy,” she reminded her jokingly as she hands her phone to him “Well, you can't blame me,” he said as he scrolls her phone. “You’re running late,” she reminded him of the time. “What's my breakfast?” he asked trying to start teasing her again. “
“Are these your bags?” Zofi’s mother asked while looking at the two medium sized luggage bags near her room's door.“Yes plus I have my carry on,” Zofi answered.“No, I meant to ask if these are just the ones you’re bringing? These are very few,” her mother clarified.Zofi smiled. “I’ve always been a light traveler. I don’t bring a lot. I can buy stuff from there,” she said.“But it isn’t just a vacation or a short trip. You’ll be based there,” her mother said.“I know and I want everything to be new,” Zofi answered.“But at least bring some pictures. Here are some good ones from your albums,” her mother asked again.“Pictures? I have a lot in my phone if I want to see your faces,” Zofi answered.“Alright. I’ll return these in your room,” her mother said.A picture slipped from the albums her mother is holding. She picked it up and saw it’s her and Billie’s picture from high school taken during the dance where she dolled up Cindy. They looked so happy in the picture and clueless
It’s already past noon when Zofi arrived at her temporary Airbnb accommodation.“How was your flight, Ms. Zofi? We were expecting you earlier,” the receptionist asked casually.“The flight was smooth but it was delayed so I just arrived now,” Zofi answered.“Our housekeeping is short-staffed today but you will be the next to be assisted,” the receptionist said.“Excuse me, are these your only bags?” a guy resting in the lobby asked. He looks like a foreigner.Zofi smiled but didn’t say a word. The guy is a stranger.“I can help you bring these to your unit,” he offered.“Is that okay, Sir Richard?” the receptionist asked.“If that’s okay with her,” Richard said. He must have sensed that Zofi is not trusting him.“Ms. Zofi, he’s Sir Richard. He’s also our guest. Sir Richard, this is Ms. Zofi,” the receptionist introduced them.“It’s okay, I can wait for the staff. Thank you, Richard,” she said.“Alright then. I’ll go up now. The humidity outside was killing me. It was a bad idea t
The face, the hug, the feeling – they are not just familiar but have been longed for. It’s been three long years since Billie got sick and everything else happened. All the misunderstandings and things that both of them already want to forget have presented themselves again in the moment.“What time is your flight tomorrow?” Billie asked.“After lunch,” Zofi said.“So soon. I was hoping it would be at night,” he said.“I want to rest a bit before the next flight,” she said.Billie looks away and stays focused there.“What is it?” she asked. He shakes his head while trying to hide the sadness in his eyes with a fake smile.“You’re turning 29. We are both 29 now and one of us is already taken,” he said.Zofi understood what he meant.“It can’t be pushed back anymore this time,” he said.“Are you assuming that I am going to end up with him?” she asked bravely.“I know he’s not going to let you go,” he said seriously.“We are still getting to know more about each other,” she said nervo
Lizzie looks around the café while having her favorite drink. The place has improved a lot and it attracts more customers everyday. “Happy mood?” Zofi asked.“I’m enjoying this drink and this place,” Lizzie said.“I can see that,” Zofi said.Jiro entered the café and saw them immediately. He waved at them before heading to the café’s office. He looks so cool and handsome while juggling his duties in the café and his job as a consultant for a company.“We’ve been frequenting this place for months now,” Lizzie said.“It’s the closest to our office,” Zofi said.“I mean, you come here regularly,” Lizzie said.“And?” Zofi asked.“You’re really not afraid of him anymore?” Lizzie asked.“He’s nothing to me,” Zofi asked.“C’mon. Have you seen him lately?” Lizzie asked.“I see him almost every time I come here,” Zofi said.“Maybe….you know? You could explore the possibility?” Lizzie asked.“Of what?” Your imagination is getting weird,” Zofi said.Lizzie leans forward. “Don’t tell me you
Zofi and Luke catch their breath upon reaching the entrance of the restaurant. “We should freshen up first before we meet them. I’m getting ready for a full lecture from my mother so you should be ready to,” she told Luke. “Maybe if we looked haggard she would be more understanding,” he said. “You don’t know her. Go wash your face first,” she said. Hundreds of thoughts come running in Zofi’s head. Explaining how they lost Danica is a big challenge. “Ready?” she asked Luke as he came out of the men’s room. The two walk slowly to their reserved table. Contrary to what they thought, her mother is in high spirit. Danica looks like she’s happy too. There’s no hint of what happened in the early part of the day. The two look at each other. Everyone in the table is happy but there’s one she doesn’t remember inviting to this dinner. “Why are here?” she asked Jiro who’s sitting in front of her mother. Jiro looks uneasy. “Hey, that’s not how you greet a guest,” her mother said
It’s Zofi’s twenty-eight birthday. She woke up even before her alarm goes off. Her phone is full of messages but Billie's message stands out. It reads, "Happy 28th birthday. I pray for your success and happiness. Enjoy your day.”“Were you expecting more like 'I love you'?” Natalie asked.“Don’t be silly. Of course not,” Zofi said.“But your tone said otherwise,” Natalie said.“I don’t know what you're talking about,” Zofi said.“Not me seeing you stalking his account,” Natalie said.“You did not,” Zofi almost screamed.“You left it open yesterday and I happened to see it,” Natalie said with a naughty smile.“Anyway, my parents are arriving anytime now,” Zofi said to change the topic.“Why do they need a bigger place? Are they coming with friends?” Natalie asked.Zofi looked at her for a moment then began thinking.“I was busy and just went ahead and looked for a bigger one. I didn’t care to ask,” Zofi said.“Hmmm….are they not bringing you a surprise guest for your birthday?” N
Natalie opened the door with a big smile on her face.“I knew you saw it. And don’t pretend that you had nothing to do with him waiting for me in the airport today,” Zofi told her.The smile on Natalie’s face quickly vanished. Ryan listens to the girls’ conversation.“Hello there,” Zofi greeted him as she walks to her room.Ryan signaled that she follows her and try to explain.“Listen, he was just concerned about you,” Natalie said outside Zofi’s door.Zofi stays quiet inside her room. She too couldn’t believe she got inside a cab with Jiro. Her neck hurts a little from not moving during the short cab ride.“It's a good start,” Ryan told Natalie.“Is he really a good person?” she asked.“He is. He’s just misunderstood because he cares a lot for her but he’s a little careless too,” he said. The mood in the office is light as everyone anticipates an outing for all employees and interns.“Finally, you’re here!” Lizzie said as soon as Zofi entered their area.“What did I miss?” Zofi
Zofi slowly opened her room’s door. The entire unit is dark with only the light coming from the kitchen. There’s no sign of Natalie being awake. She then carefully pulled her luggage and walked quickly and quietly to the main door. She catches her breath as she stands outside of their unit. A car service taking her to the airport awaits downstairs.“Miss, would you like to have some coffee or tea?” the flight attendant asked.“Coffee, please,” she said with a sign of relief on her face. It’s two more hours before she lands in Manila. She messaged Natalie to tell her about her early flight.“I couldn’t believe myself,” she said to Natalie yesterday afternoon.“What happened? Why are you panting?” Natalie asked.“My mind was wandering. I knew I saw Jiro coming from the opposite direction but I didn’t bother taking a different route,” Zofi said.“Wait. He came from the opposite direction so he’s not following you,” Natalie clarified.“It’s a different way of doing it but I wasn’t
Billie waits a little anxiously in the living room of a modest home. The moment brings him back to his very first date in high school where Zofi arranged him and Cindy together to prove to all the mean girls in school that anyone deserved to attend the prom.“I’m impressed, Billie. You are impressive,” Auntie Tessa said while looking so delighted at the flowers he gave her.“Thank you, Auntie, but what did I do that impressed you?” he asked.“This and you coming here to pick up my niece and go on a proper date. I never imagined these things could still be possible these days. Most of the guys who wanted to date her would simply ask her to meet them somewhere,” she said.“I'm an old school kind of guy,” he said.“And I appreciate old school. You already have my approval,” she said.“Auntie, we are still getting to know each other. Don’t scare him,” Lena said. She silently walked in to the living room.“Good afternoon, Lena. You look beautiful,” he said.Auntie Tessa couldn’t hi
Violet kissed a half-awake and drunk Billie. She leaned closer to see his face one last time.“Thanks, Billie,” she said.Billie woke to the sound of his phone. He searched for it in his wallet with his eyes still half-closed. “Billie, where are you? We’ve been calling you the whole night,” Uncle Bruce asked on the other line.“Where I am? I’m here…..,” he couldn’t tell where he is.He looked up at the ceiling and realized it wasn’t his room’s ceiling. He found himself on a couch with his shirt unbuttoned.“I’m in a friend’s house. I drank too much yesterday and I spent the night in here. I’m going home now,” Billie said.“You’ve to control your drinking. Our plans might get ruined by it,” Uncle Bruce said.“Don’t worry about it. This was the last, I promise. Sorry, Uncle,” Billie said.He immediately dialed the reception area’s number.“Good morning, Mr. Billie. You woke up early,” the lobby staff greeted him.“What?” he asked. “Ms. Violet left an instruction to wake you u
The place is full of people wanting to find love. Everyone adds to the happy vibes except for Billy who sits in a corner watching them go through the matchmaking process.“Thank you everyone from joining and best of luck to those who found a date tonight! But the night is not yet over. Let’s have some fun and drinks until midnight!” the host announced the end of the event.“How was it?” Crinkles asked Billie on the phone.“It was fun,” Billie answered.“You don’t sound like you had fun,” she said.“It was fun watching, I should say,” he said.“I knew it. I knew you wouldn’t even try,” she said.“It’s not my thing,” he said.“Or you haven’t moved on yet,” she said.“C’mon, Crinks. It’s just a couple of months versus years that I need to move on from,” he said.“I know but you’ve to start helping yourself little by little,” she said.Billie smirked. “Yeah. Coming from you,” he said sarcastically.“Listen, I’m not really good at this but I know the help that you need starts within
