Summer, 2019
"You're working on weekends now?" Billie asked Zofi.
The two next door neighbors now.
"We have teambuilding," Zofi said.
"Ah, you should be ready with your ideas for mission/vision," he said.
"Oh, it's actually more of bonding," she said.
"Your HR plans teambuilding that way?" he said.
"Well, it's just our unit doing this. Ms. Mitch thought it would be best for the team to go out and bond on one weekend. They haven't done it for so long," she said.
"Okay, then. I'm the only one who's going to pick up Saatchi from the airport," he said.
"Why does it have to be you? I mean, does she have no relatives?" she asked.
"Because she's staying in our house. She's our guest," he explained.
"Alright. You're close," she said.
"You still don't you like her, do you?" he asked.
"Oh, I think it's the other way around," she said.
"Alright then, let's not meet this weekend," he said.
Saturday comes. Billie waits early in the airport.
He's not sure how Saatchi looks now. It's been years since they last saw each other. He, Zofi, and Saatchi were neighborhood kids but between him and Zofi, Saatchi would always go to him. She probably longed for a big brother and Zofi misread that she didn't like her.
"Billie?" a young lady greeted him.
"Saatchi?" he asked.
"Oh, I'm not Saatchi," she said.
Billie is embarrassed.
"Yes, I am Saatchi!" she told him. She pulled a prank on him.
"You got me there!" Billie said. He gave her a quick welcome hug.
"Do I look different?" she asked.
"You look great!" he answered.
"I know. I lost my baby fats and my skin cleared up finally!" she said.
"Looks good on you," he said.
Saatchi looks around.
"Where is the other half?" she asked.
"Other half?" he asked.
"Zofi. Who else?" she said.
"I didn't know she was my other half," he said.
"You two are inseparable. I expected her to come here with you unless she doesn't want to see me," she said.
"Zofi is in teambuilding," he explained.
Saatchi smiled.
"So, are we heading home now?" she asked.
"Mom's cooking your favorite dish for lunch today," he said.
"I miss Mommy Rose," she said. She calls his mother with more endearment than Zofi's "Aunt Rose".
"Is it really okay to stay in your house?" she asked.
"Of course. You're always welcome," he said.
Saatchi discreetly smiled.
"Besides, Mom really wants someone there. Dad is in business trip abroad and I'm staying in my rented apartment near my office," he said.
The smile on Saatchi's face vanished right away.
"You won't be there during my stay? I'll be here for only a couple of weeks," she asked.
"I can meet you after office. I'll see if Zofi is available too. She'll surely work on her schedule to meet you," he said.
Saatchi doesn't really care if Zofi doesn't meet her. She only cares about Billie.
"What are your activities, by the way?" he asked.
"I will be observing this preschool owned by our friend's family because I'm planning on putting up my own preschool after I pass the board. The school year ends next week so I have to visit soon," she said.
"Who's going with you?" he asked.
"Perhaps, Mommy Rose can help me," she said sadly.
"I can file a couple of days off - one for this coming week and the other for the next," he said.
"You're making yourself available for me?" she asked.
Billie smiled.
In the teambuilding, Zofi is the most energetic of all. Her teammates enjoy the games that she planned. Best of all, she makes Jiro smile more.
"Who are you calling?" Saatchi asked.
"I'm trying to get Zofi on the phone so you can talk," Billie said.
Saatchi feels awkward about the idea. She's never that close to Zofi.
"She's not picking up," he said.
"Do you guys go out every weekend?" she asked.
"Sometimes. We live next to each other," he said.
"Really? But you're living next to each other, not in the same house," she said.
"Yes. We live separately," he said.
Saatchi is glowing when they visit the preschool. Billie promised to join her until lunch.
"Teacher Saatchi!" cute little Lily excitedly greeted her.
"Hi Lily, good morning!" Saatchi said. She sounds cute talking to the kid.
"Hi!" Lily greeted Billie.
"Oh, this is Billie," Saatchi said.
"Is he your boyfriend?" Lilly asked out of the blue.
Saatchi's face turned red.
"I'm Teacher Saatchi's friend," Billie said.
The teacher called the kids to take their seats.
"I don't know how kids these days know about that," Saatchi said.
Truth is, Saatchi loved what Lily said. She wishes she can be as candid and as the kids these days.
After the class ended, Lily approached her again.
"Teacher Saatchi. I have a camera," she said while showing her pink polaroid camera.
"Oh, that's so cute, it suits you. Who gave you that?" Saatchi asked.
"My grandmother. She said I have to use it every day," Lily said.
"Let me take your picture," Saatchi said.
Lilly's polaroid picture developed nicely. She gave a hearty laugh after looking at it.
"May I take a picture of you and Teacher Saatchi?" Billie asked.
"Let's take a picture together," Lilly suggested.
Saatchi's heart beats faster than usual. Billie looks so happy too. She can't describe what she feels seeing him like that.
"I love it here. Too bad, my next approved vacation leave is for next week," he said.
"That's okay. As long as you come back. They will appreciate it," she said.
Going to the restaurant, they pass by an amusement park.
"Is that a Ferris wheel?" she asked.
"Ah, there's a newly opened amusement park in that area," he said.
Saatchi looks so amused. She reminisces the time she was growing up in the country before they left for the US.
"I remember you got lost one time and we all looked for you," he said.
"I wasn't lost. I was really lining up for the Ferris wheel ride," she said.
"Next time, you should have longer vacation so we can go visit more theme parks," he said.
She smiled. Everything Billie says easily leaves mark in her heart.
Friday comes. The start of the weekend is once again hectic for Zofi.
"What's happening this weekend?" Billie asked sarcastically on the phone.
"Nothing. Just rest," Zofi said.
"Okay. Let's go home early today so we can have catch up with Saatchi in our house," he said.
"I'll go home tomorrow. I have to finish some reports tonight so I can be free this weekend and rest," she said.
"Excuse again?" he asked.
"You're ridiculous. I'll meet her tomorrow," she said.
"Oh, I guess there's another reason," he said.
"Billie, don't start. I will go home tomorrow, not tonight," she affirmed.
"Alright, Mom's calling. Just take care when you go home to your apartment tonight. Lock your door," he said before hanging up.
Billie's mother worries because Saatchi's not home yet.
"Did you call her phone?" Billie asked.
"It's just ringing now. She must be lost in the mall," his mother said.
"She must have forgotten to reset her phone after the class. Did she tell you which mall?" he asked.
"No. I should've asked," his mother said.
Billie drives his car while thinking where Saatchi could have possibly gone. He thinks of going to the preschool to see if she's back there or if someone knows where she went after the class.
Then, something came to his head.
An hour later, he finds himself staring at the grand Ferris wheel inside the amusement park next to a mall.
"Move forward," the staff asked.
Billie looks around while moving forward to enter the ride.
"Ah, there she is," he said with great relief.
"Are you not riding?" the girl behind him asked.
He's there already so he decided to ride his favorite ride.
As his cabin hangs on top, he noticed someone below sitting on a bench near the ride called "Space Shuttle". He realized it wasn't Saatchi that he saw earlier.
He rushed to go out after the riding time ended.
"Saatchi!" he called her.
Saatchi realized it was Billie and her heart beats faster once again.
"How did you know I was here?" she asked.
"It's the only mall next to a theme park," he said.
He knows that about her and she's so flattered.
"So you rode this?" he asked while pointing to the space shuttle ride.
"Oh no. It looks fun but scary too," she said.
"C'mon, let's ride it before we go home," he said.
Billie knows she's scared so he took her hand.
The riding time hasn't started yet but Saatchi feels she's on cloud 9 already.
"Just close your eyes if you're scared," he said.
Saatchi can't say anything. Her heart is full.
Saatchi feels the thrill of the ride but the thrill of sharing the ride next to Billie is stronger. Her eyes are closed because she can feel it better that way.
Billie is a gentleman looking out for her. He noticed that she hasn't opened her eyes almost the entire ride. He thinks she's really scared so he grabbed her hand.
Saatchi can't ask for more. The tough ride has turned in to a sweet ride.
"I enjoyed it. Thanks to you," she said.
"I worried that you were so scared. I didn't think you opened your eyes the entire ride," he said.
"I was really scared but I'm willing to ride on it again," she said with a big smile on her face.
"So, you're staying longer?" he asked.
"Well, I'm seriously considering that. This trip is way too short and there's so much to see," she said.
"There's so many amusement parks that you have to visit," he said.
"And I'm so enticed right now," she said.
"Zofi loves amusement parks too. Her favorite rides are those that involve water," he said.
Saatchi turned quiet. Billie noticed.
"You always talk about her," she asked.
"Do I?" Well, practically see each other every day," he explained.
"But you said you're just friends. You're not a couple," she said.
Billie looked far then pulled over his car to the safe side of the road.
"I have a girlfriend. She's teaching in the UK," he disclosed.
Saatchi's world began to crumble just when she thought she's almost near her dream.
"Zofi dressed her up one time for the school dance and I was her date," he said.
"Zofi knows her well?" she asked.
"Yes. In fact, she's so supportive of us," he said.
All this time, Saatchi thought Zofi was her rival but it turned out her real competition was someone unknown to her.
"That's not fair. I didn't even have a chance," she said.
Billie starts driving. They are both quiet now.
"Can you just go back to your apartment tonight? I'll check in to a hotel tomorrow morning," she said.
"I'll do that but you must stay in our house," he said.
Zofi calls in the middle of their travel. Billie doesn't know if he should accept the call.
"Please acceept the call. I haven't spoken to her," she said.
The two girls talked casually on speaker. It was quick but it was a good distraction for both of them. Thanks to Zofi.
Saatchi decided to cut her vacation even shorter. She said she has something important to take care back in the US.
"Please let us know when you land," Billie said on the phone. They haven't seen each other after that night.
Saatchi holds the polaroid picture of them with Lilly. The picture that developed so fast now only brings memory.
Billie wants to say more but he also knows nothing he will say can make her feel better.
"I'm sorry, Saatchi but I can only offer you my friendship," he said to himself.
Zofi has been staring at the colorful cotton candy for a few minutes now. "Are you feeling guilty too?" Billie asked. "I feel bad for her. I didn't know she liked you that much," Zofi said. The two sit on the bench near the Ferris Wheel. The amusement park is full of young people like them who probably have not yet entirely moved on from being kids. "We could've enjoyed the rides with her. I feel her loneliness," she said. "I know. And considering the mission that we've done for others, I feel I abandoned her," he said. Zofi pats Billie's back. "Don't be so hard on yourself. It's not your fault if you don't feel the same way for her," she said. "There's too much going on inside my head this past week," he said. "I haven't been a bother to you lately so besides the situation with Saatchi, what else has been bothering you?" Zofi asked. Billie becomes quiet. "C'mon, tell me," she said. Billie sighed. "Cindy hasn't returned my calls or messages this entire week," he said.
Billie and Zofi sit on the couch looking at the TV. They're not watching. They're just staring at it. "Do you want anything to munch or drink? Softdrinks? Juice?" Billie asked. Zofi grabbed one throw pillow and hugs it. "Are we going to pass the night like this?" he asked. "Tell me why were you sad yesterday. I see you're still sad until today," Zofi asked. "Then, tell me why did you go to your parents' house," he asked. Zofi sighed. "I was devastated and I couldn't go to you because you were unreachable and I recalled you telling me last night that you already had so much in your head, I shouldn't add up to that," she said. "I'm sorry," he apologized. "Is it still about her?" she asked. Billie nodded. He can't say anything after that. "You don't have to tell me now if you're not ready yet," she said. Billie is still quiet. "I think I'm hungry now. Let eat whatever you have in your fridge," she said. "Cindy married his employer," he said quickly. His eyes start to te
Zofi wiped traces of pizza sauce off Billie’s mouth. They spent the night airing out each other’s heartaches until he fell asleep on the couch without brushing his teeth. It moved her to smile seeing him messed up, a far cry from his usual self. “Shoot, I slept with pizza sauce in my mouth,” Billie said after waking up and tasting the pizza sauce on his mouth. “You're so gross,” Zofi began joking. “Give me your phone,” Billie asked. “My phone? Oh, you’re lucky, I forgot to take a photo of your helpless moment,” she said. “C’mon, give it to me. I don’t trust you,” he said. Zofi giggles more. She once took a photo of him in an awkward pose and showed it to others. He learned his lesson to be always careful. “You’re invading my privacy,” she reminded her jokingly as she hands her phone to him “Well, you can't blame me,” he said as he scrolls her phone. “You’re running late,” she reminded him of the time. “What's my breakfast?” he asked trying to start teasing her again. “
“Are these your bags?” Zofi’s mother asked while looking at the two medium sized luggage bags near her room's door.“Yes plus I have my carry on,” Zofi answered.“No, I meant to ask if these are just the ones you’re bringing? These are very few,” her mother clarified.Zofi smiled. “I’ve always been a light traveler. I don’t bring a lot. I can buy stuff from there,” she said.“But it isn’t just a vacation or a short trip. You’ll be based there,” her mother said.“I know and I want everything to be new,” Zofi answered.“But at least bring some pictures. Here are some good ones from your albums,” her mother asked again.“Pictures? I have a lot in my phone if I want to see your faces,” Zofi answered.“Alright. I’ll return these in your room,” her mother said.A picture slipped from the albums her mother is holding. She picked it up and saw it’s her and Billie’s picture from high school taken during the dance where she dolled up Cindy. They looked so happy in the picture and clueless
It’s already past noon when Zofi arrived at her temporary Airbnb accommodation.“How was your flight, Ms. Zofi? We were expecting you earlier,” the receptionist asked casually.“The flight was smooth but it was delayed so I just arrived now,” Zofi answered.“Our housekeeping is short-staffed today but you will be the next to be assisted,” the receptionist said.“Excuse me, are these your only bags?” a guy resting in the lobby asked. He looks like a foreigner.Zofi smiled but didn’t say a word. The guy is a stranger.“I can help you bring these to your unit,” he offered.“Is that okay, Sir Richard?” the receptionist asked.“If that’s okay with her,” Richard said. He must have sensed that Zofi is not trusting him.“Ms. Zofi, he’s Sir Richard. He’s also our guest. Sir Richard, this is Ms. Zofi,” the receptionist introduced them.“It’s okay, I can wait for the staff. Thank you, Richard,” she said.“Alright then. I’ll go up now. The humidity outside was killing me. It was a bad idea t
Billie peeps through the glass window of Zofi’s previously rented apartment on his way out of the building. He feels a little sentimental just passing by the area.“Billie, good morning,” Mrs. Ruiz, his landlady greeted him.“Oh, good morning, Mrs. Ruiz,” Billie greeted her politely. “I was just checking the unit. One of my friends is interested in renting it. I already gave him your number,” he said.“Is that so? I actually thought you were missing Zofi. I saw you stopped by here yesterday too,” Mrs. Ruiz said. She’s a bit nosy.Billie smiled awkwardly trying to ignore whatever it is that his landlady is implying.“I heard she joined a tech company in Singapore,” she said.“That’s right, she did. Anyway, I’ll remind my officemate to call you today about this unit,” he said to stop the conversation about Zofi“Okay. There were already inquiries for this unit last weekend. Your friend must call me soon,” she said.Billie couldn’t believe Zofi told their landlady where she was
It’s like a dream but it’s not. The sound of that voice has made a magical comeback.“You missed me?” Billie asked first.“You said it first,” Zofi said instead. Both laugh and the wall between them just crumbled.“How are you?” she asked.“How are you?” he asked with more emphasis.“Tomorrow’s my first day at work,” she said.“I thought it was yesterday. I no longer know anything about you,” he said.“You never asked. You stopped asking,” she said.“Why did we let it happen?” he asked.“I don’t know,” she said.“Can we not do that again,” he asked.Silence means they have an agreement.“Why did you call?” she asked.“I couldn’t stop thinking how you are doing now, your new work, your new place,” he said.“Billie, I’m really scared. I’m having cold feet,” she said.“That’s first. I’ve never known you to be anxious of anything,” he said.“I’m alone. For real this time,” she said.Billie breathed deeply. He knew he was one of the reasons she feels alone.“I’ll always be here for y
Billie’s colleagues can’t help but look at him. He’s been humming songs while working all morning.“Better mood, huh? Must have a good night sleep last night,” Rowell, his ever nosy male colleague asked.“My guess is he has a new love interest,” Reese, one of his female colleagues who is friendly but also nosy when it comes to love affairs of everyone in the office.“How about you Rosie? What’s your guess being the most in love with love among us,” Rowell asked.“Stop it, Rowell,” Rosie said in a rather happy tone.“Stop it, Rowell,” Reese imitated Rosie’s speaking manner and voice.Billie laughs with them.“Looks like another one’s happy today. Ah…I’m envious right now,” Rowell said.Reese looked at Rosie and shook her head discreetly. The day’s about to end but Billie is still in the mood. His energy is the same as this morning.“Come with me, Billie. Let’s check this new bar they’re talking about,” Rowell said.“Next time, bro. I want to finish this deliverable today,” Billie
The face, the hug, the feeling – they are not just familiar but have been longed for. It’s been three long years since Billie got sick and everything else happened. All the misunderstandings and things that both of them already want to forget have presented themselves again in the moment.“What time is your flight tomorrow?” Billie asked.“After lunch,” Zofi said.“So soon. I was hoping it would be at night,” he said.“I want to rest a bit before the next flight,” she said.Billie looks away and stays focused there.“What is it?” she asked. He shakes his head while trying to hide the sadness in his eyes with a fake smile.“You’re turning 29. We are both 29 now and one of us is already taken,” he said.Zofi understood what he meant.“It can’t be pushed back anymore this time,” he said.“Are you assuming that I am going to end up with him?” she asked bravely.“I know he’s not going to let you go,” he said seriously.“We are still getting to know more about each other,” she said nervo
Lizzie looks around the café while having her favorite drink. The place has improved a lot and it attracts more customers everyday. “Happy mood?” Zofi asked.“I’m enjoying this drink and this place,” Lizzie said.“I can see that,” Zofi said.Jiro entered the café and saw them immediately. He waved at them before heading to the café’s office. He looks so cool and handsome while juggling his duties in the café and his job as a consultant for a company.“We’ve been frequenting this place for months now,” Lizzie said.“It’s the closest to our office,” Zofi said.“I mean, you come here regularly,” Lizzie said.“And?” Zofi asked.“You’re really not afraid of him anymore?” Lizzie asked.“He’s nothing to me,” Zofi asked.“C’mon. Have you seen him lately?” Lizzie asked.“I see him almost every time I come here,” Zofi said.“Maybe….you know? You could explore the possibility?” Lizzie asked.“Of what?” Your imagination is getting weird,” Zofi said.Lizzie leans forward. “Don’t tell me you
Zofi and Luke catch their breath upon reaching the entrance of the restaurant. “We should freshen up first before we meet them. I’m getting ready for a full lecture from my mother so you should be ready to,” she told Luke. “Maybe if we looked haggard she would be more understanding,” he said. “You don’t know her. Go wash your face first,” she said. Hundreds of thoughts come running in Zofi’s head. Explaining how they lost Danica is a big challenge. “Ready?” she asked Luke as he came out of the men’s room. The two walk slowly to their reserved table. Contrary to what they thought, her mother is in high spirit. Danica looks like she’s happy too. There’s no hint of what happened in the early part of the day. The two look at each other. Everyone in the table is happy but there’s one she doesn’t remember inviting to this dinner. “Why are here?” she asked Jiro who’s sitting in front of her mother. Jiro looks uneasy. “Hey, that’s not how you greet a guest,” her mother said
It’s Zofi’s twenty-eight birthday. She woke up even before her alarm goes off. Her phone is full of messages but Billie's message stands out. It reads, "Happy 28th birthday. I pray for your success and happiness. Enjoy your day.”“Were you expecting more like 'I love you'?” Natalie asked.“Don’t be silly. Of course not,” Zofi said.“But your tone said otherwise,” Natalie said.“I don’t know what you're talking about,” Zofi said.“Not me seeing you stalking his account,” Natalie said.“You did not,” Zofi almost screamed.“You left it open yesterday and I happened to see it,” Natalie said with a naughty smile.“Anyway, my parents are arriving anytime now,” Zofi said to change the topic.“Why do they need a bigger place? Are they coming with friends?” Natalie asked.Zofi looked at her for a moment then began thinking.“I was busy and just went ahead and looked for a bigger one. I didn’t care to ask,” Zofi said.“Hmmm….are they not bringing you a surprise guest for your birthday?” N
Natalie opened the door with a big smile on her face.“I knew you saw it. And don’t pretend that you had nothing to do with him waiting for me in the airport today,” Zofi told her.The smile on Natalie’s face quickly vanished. Ryan listens to the girls’ conversation.“Hello there,” Zofi greeted him as she walks to her room.Ryan signaled that she follows her and try to explain.“Listen, he was just concerned about you,” Natalie said outside Zofi’s door.Zofi stays quiet inside her room. She too couldn’t believe she got inside a cab with Jiro. Her neck hurts a little from not moving during the short cab ride.“It's a good start,” Ryan told Natalie.“Is he really a good person?” she asked.“He is. He’s just misunderstood because he cares a lot for her but he’s a little careless too,” he said. The mood in the office is light as everyone anticipates an outing for all employees and interns.“Finally, you’re here!” Lizzie said as soon as Zofi entered their area.“What did I miss?” Zofi
Zofi slowly opened her room’s door. The entire unit is dark with only the light coming from the kitchen. There’s no sign of Natalie being awake. She then carefully pulled her luggage and walked quickly and quietly to the main door. She catches her breath as she stands outside of their unit. A car service taking her to the airport awaits downstairs.“Miss, would you like to have some coffee or tea?” the flight attendant asked.“Coffee, please,” she said with a sign of relief on her face. It’s two more hours before she lands in Manila. She messaged Natalie to tell her about her early flight.“I couldn’t believe myself,” she said to Natalie yesterday afternoon.“What happened? Why are you panting?” Natalie asked.“My mind was wandering. I knew I saw Jiro coming from the opposite direction but I didn’t bother taking a different route,” Zofi said.“Wait. He came from the opposite direction so he’s not following you,” Natalie clarified.“It’s a different way of doing it but I wasn’t
Billie waits a little anxiously in the living room of a modest home. The moment brings him back to his very first date in high school where Zofi arranged him and Cindy together to prove to all the mean girls in school that anyone deserved to attend the prom.“I’m impressed, Billie. You are impressive,” Auntie Tessa said while looking so delighted at the flowers he gave her.“Thank you, Auntie, but what did I do that impressed you?” he asked.“This and you coming here to pick up my niece and go on a proper date. I never imagined these things could still be possible these days. Most of the guys who wanted to date her would simply ask her to meet them somewhere,” she said.“I'm an old school kind of guy,” he said.“And I appreciate old school. You already have my approval,” she said.“Auntie, we are still getting to know each other. Don’t scare him,” Lena said. She silently walked in to the living room.“Good afternoon, Lena. You look beautiful,” he said.Auntie Tessa couldn’t hi
Violet kissed a half-awake and drunk Billie. She leaned closer to see his face one last time.“Thanks, Billie,” she said.Billie woke to the sound of his phone. He searched for it in his wallet with his eyes still half-closed. “Billie, where are you? We’ve been calling you the whole night,” Uncle Bruce asked on the other line.“Where I am? I’m here…..,” he couldn’t tell where he is.He looked up at the ceiling and realized it wasn’t his room’s ceiling. He found himself on a couch with his shirt unbuttoned.“I’m in a friend’s house. I drank too much yesterday and I spent the night in here. I’m going home now,” Billie said.“You’ve to control your drinking. Our plans might get ruined by it,” Uncle Bruce said.“Don’t worry about it. This was the last, I promise. Sorry, Uncle,” Billie said.He immediately dialed the reception area’s number.“Good morning, Mr. Billie. You woke up early,” the lobby staff greeted him.“What?” he asked. “Ms. Violet left an instruction to wake you u
The place is full of people wanting to find love. Everyone adds to the happy vibes except for Billy who sits in a corner watching them go through the matchmaking process.“Thank you everyone from joining and best of luck to those who found a date tonight! But the night is not yet over. Let’s have some fun and drinks until midnight!” the host announced the end of the event.“How was it?” Crinkles asked Billie on the phone.“It was fun,” Billie answered.“You don’t sound like you had fun,” she said.“It was fun watching, I should say,” he said.“I knew it. I knew you wouldn’t even try,” she said.“It’s not my thing,” he said.“Or you haven’t moved on yet,” she said.“C’mon, Crinks. It’s just a couple of months versus years that I need to move on from,” he said.“I know but you’ve to start helping yourself little by little,” she said.Billie smirked. “Yeah. Coming from you,” he said sarcastically.“Listen, I’m not really good at this but I know the help that you need starts within
