Chapter 1

Seraphina

The cold night air stung the open cuts on my arms and legs as I ran. My torn clothes barely clung to my body, soaked in blood, sweat, and mud. Every step was agony, my muscles burning, my chest heaving for air. Behind me, their laughter echoed through the forest, mingling with the taunting howls of wolves.

“Keep running, little rabbit!” a voice jeered, followed by a howl that sent a chill through my bones.

My foot caught on a root, and I went down hard, my arm crumpling under me with a sickening snap. Pain flared white-hot, and I couldn’t hold back the scream. I bit down on my lip, the taste of iron flooding my mouth, and dragged myself behind a fallen tree trunk.

I pressed my back against it, trying to stay silent. My breaths came quick and shallow, each one rattling against my broken ribs. My ears strained to pick up any sound, any clue as to where they were.

The forest went quiet. Too quiet.

Then I felt it.

A crushing weight slammed onto my chest. The air was knocked from my lungs as a giant paw pressed down, pinning me. I choked on a sob, tears spilling as the sharp edge of a claw dug into my skin.

“You think you can run from us?” a voice growled, rough and mocking.

The figures emerged from the shadows, some human, some wolves. Their eyes glowed faintly, filled with malice. They surrounded me, closing in slowly, their sniffs loud and exaggerated.

“She reeks of fear,” one of them sneered.

I thrashed, trying to push the paw off me, but it only pressed harder. My ribs screamed in protest, and my vision blurred.

My wolf stirred. I could feel her, clawing at the edges of my mind, furious and ready to tear them apart. My pupils darkened, my body trembling as her strength tried to break free.

“Stop,” I whispered to her, my voice barely audible.

“Let me out!” she roared inside me.

“No!”

Before she could take over completely, a familiar voice cut through the tension.

“She’s lucky the Alpha wants her alive.”

The weight on my chest disappeared instantly. I sucked in a ragged breath, clutching my ribs as I turned my head toward the voice.

Luna stood there, her gaze hard and unforgiving. The men stepped back, lowering their heads slightly in submission, but the disdain in her voice was sharp.

“You’re pathetic,” she spat, her lip curling as she stared down at me. “If it were up to me, I’d leave you here to rot.”

I swallowed hard, my body trembling under her glare. She crouched down, her cold fingers grabbing my chin roughly, forcing me to meet her eyes.

“But your father wants to see you,” she said, her voice dripping with venom. “Today. Don’t make him wait.”

My father was the old alpha.

I tried to pull away, but her grip only tightened, her nails digging into my skin like claws.

“And if you ever pull a stunt like this again…” Her smile twisted into something cruel, her eyes gleaming with a dark promise. “I’ll make sure you suffer the way I did. You’ll feel the pain of losing everything, just like I did when I lost my two children.”

She shoved me back, letting me drop to the ground like I was nothing more than dirt beneath her feet.

“Get up. Now.”

Every muscle screamed in protest as I forced myself to move, my body trembling from the effort. My wolf snarled low in my mind, furious at the humiliation, begging to rise and fight back. But I shoved her down.

Not now.

I grabbed the torn pieces of my shirt and pants, pulling them together enough to cover myself. My legs wobbled as I stood, the fever making my vision swim. Every step was agony as I followed Luna back toward the packhouse.

“You’re a disgrace,” she hissed over her shoulder. “Don’t think for a second anyone pities you. You’re alive because of him. Remember that.”

Her words echoed in my head as I climbed the stairs to my father’s office. The pain in my side was unbearable, and my wolf snarled, her voice a constant reminder of my weakness.

“Why do you keep running back?” she growled. “Are you waiting for them to catch you next time? To take everything from you?”

I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to block her out.

I can’t run. Not yet.

“You’re pathetic,” she hissed, but I could feel the edge of worry beneath her anger.

I paused at the door to my father’s office, my hand trembling as it hovered over the handle. Luna wouldn’t dare hurt me here. Not in front of him.

He saved me. Again.

I swallowed the lump in my throat and pushed the door open, forcing myself to step inside. My wolf growled one last time before going silent.

I had to pretend she w

asn’t there. As far as they knew, I was wolfless. And I had to keep it that way.
