Kaelion

I stood by the black SUV, arms crossed, as the packhouse door creaked open. She appeared—Seraphina. She was barely holding herself together, each step looking like it might be her last. Her skin was pale, sickly, and bruises bloomed across every visible inch of her body like she’d been dragged through hell.

Pathetic.

I watched her limp toward me, her gaze unfocused, her lips trembling as if she was mumbling something to herself. She didn’t even make it halfway before her knees buckled. She stumbled forward, collapsing right into me.

For a second, I froze.

Her body was like dead weight against mine, her head falling against my chest. I could feel the heat radiating off her skin—unnatural, burning hot. My wolf growled in the back of my mind, restless, agitated.

“She’s burning up,” he muttered, his usual gruff tone laced with concern. “You’re neglecting your mate.”

She’s faking it, I shot back, shoving the annoying voice aside.

I grabbed her by the arm and yanked her away from me like she was nothing more than a sack of grain. She didn’t even flinch. Her body hung limp, her head lolling to the side, a weak, unconscious mess.

“Tch,” I muttered under my breath.

With no patience for this nonsense, I tossed her into the back seat of the SUV. She hit the leather with a dull thud, but she didn’t react. Not even a whimper. I slammed the door shut, the sound echoing through the quiet night.

Sliding into the front passenger seat, I leaned back, staring ahead as my gamma, Dax, settled into the driver’s seat. The engine roared to life, the headlights cutting through the darkness as we pulled away from the packhouse.

But no matter how much I tried to ignore it, my wolf wouldn’t shut up.

“You can smell it, can’t you?” he growled, pacing in the back of my mind. “She’s sick. Fever’s high. She reeks of infection.”

I clenched my jaw, refusing to acknowledge him. But he was right. The stench of sweat, blood, and something sour—like rotting flesh—filled the car, creeping into my senses.

“You left us single till twenty-five, and now you’re ignoring our mate? You’re a damn fool,” my wolf spat, his voice a low, irritated rumble.

I exhaled sharply through my nose and risked a glance into the rearview mirror.

She lay there, motionless, her face turned slightly toward the window. The moonlight streaming through the glass highlighted the sharp angles of her cheekbones, too pronounced from what had to be months—if not years—of neglect. Her lips were cracked, dry, and her skin was ghostly pale beneath the smears of dirt and dried blood.

She looked fragile. Breakable.

It irritated me.

“She’s weak,” I muttered, my voice low enough that only Dax might hear. “Useless.”

But my wolf wasn’t buying it. I could feel his judgment, his disdain directed at me this time.

“She’s not weak. You’re blind.”

I gritted my teeth, dragging my eyes away from the mirror. I didn’t care if she was my mate. I didn’t want a mate. I’d built my pack, my reputation, without needing anyone. And I sure as hell didn’t need some half-dead omega dragging me down.

Dax’s nervous cough snapped me out of my thoughts.

“Uh… Alpha,” he started, his eyes flicking between the road and me, “are you sure about this? I mean… she doesn’t even have a wolf. And, uh, she doesn’t look like she’s going to make it through the night.”

I shot him a glare through the mirror, my eyes narrowing into slits. Dax visibly flinched, his hands tightening on the steering wheel.

“Do I look unsure to you, Gamma?” I snapped, my voice ice-cold.

“No, alpha," he muttered quickly, his shoulders stiffening. “Just… just thought I’d ask.”

I leaned back in my seat, my jaw clenched so tight it ached. But Dax’s words echoed in my head, mixing with my wolf’s constant growling.

She didn’t seem like she had a wolf back there in the office. She was beaten down, submissive, nothing more than a broken girl. But there was something that didn’t sit right with me.

Because I felt her wolf.

When I stood in that office, looking down at her like she was beneath me, her wolf had stirred. It had cursed at me. Me. No omega without a wolf could do that. No one without a spirit burning inside them could radiate that level of defiance, even if it was buried beneath layers of pain.

There was more to this story.

Much more.

And I didn’t trust it. Not for a second.

Her father was a manipulative bastard. Everyone knew that. Why the hell would he offer me his daughter unless he had an angle? Maybe Seraphina wasn’t as broken as she looked. Maybe this was all some ploy. A trap.

I wasn’t about to be anyone’s fool.

I turned slightly in my seat, glancing back at her limp form again.

“Keep her under 24/7 surveillance,” I ordered Dax flatly. “I want eyes on her at all times. If she so much as breathes wrong, I want to know.”

“Yes, Alpha,” Dax responded quickly, but I could still hear the unease in his voice.

I watched as Seraphina stirred slightly, a soft, pained sound escaping her lips. Her brow furrowed, and she shifted like she was trying to wake up but couldn’t.

My wolf growled low in my mind, his frustration bleeding into my own thoughts.

“You’re an idiot if you think she’s faking this.”

I ignored him.

But deep down, a part of me wondered if maybe, just maybe, he was right.

4Seraphina’s POVI wasn’t sure how long I’d been unconscious, but when I finally woke, my body felt like it had been trampled by a stampede. Every muscle screamed, and the dull, persistent ache in my ribs told me they were either cracked or bruised—probably both. Chapter 5KaelionThe scent of fear clung to the walls of the council room like smoke after a fire. It was thick, heavy, and satisfying. I sat at the head of the long wooden table, fingers steepled under my chin, as my pack members fidgeted in their seats, their eyes darting nervously.None of them dared meet my gaze. Good. They were learning.“Explain,” I growled, my voice low but deadly enough to make even the most seasoned warriors flinch. My Gamma, Dax swallowed hard. “Alpha, during the… incident with Seraphina, there was an escape attempt from the prisoners we captured in the last raid.”I arched a brow. “And?”Jareth hesitated before clearing his throat. “They were desperate. The guards—”“Failed,” I finished for him, my voice dripping with disdain. I let the word settle, enjoying the way tension tightened the air. “Kill them all.”A ripple of unease passed through the room, but no one dared to question me. I leaned back in my chair, watching them, their fear a quiet symphony. “A

Chapter 6 – Seraphina’s POVThe cold winter air cut through the fabric of my clothes as I ran, pushing my legs harder, harder. The pounding of my heart matched the rhythm of my footsteps. I had made it out—finally, finally free. The guards had relaxed, believing I was nothing more than a caged animal too broken to fight back. They’d let their guard down while I feigned weakness. The moment I sensed their carelessness, I slipped away.I hadn’t expected it to be this easy. The hospital had been my prison for days, but when they relaxed their vigilance, I was ready. Now, my destination was clear—across the river, into the rogue territory, where no one could touch me. Or so I thought. As I reached the edge of Kaelion’s land, the river before me seemed to grow wider, more menacing. The cold waters reminded me of my past, of my father’s pack, of the Luna’s cruelty. Memories flooded back—the mistreatment, the humiliation—and my calm shattered. My breath hitched, the image of the past flashing

Chapter 7 Seraphina’s POVI gasped for breath, my chest heaved—not from what I just did or the effort of running, but from the aftershocks of the panic attack that gripped me. My body trembled violently, each shake a fight for control. I gasped for air, desperate, but my lungs betrayed me.His grip tightened, and I struggled against him, weak and helpless. “Let. Me. Go.”Around us, the guards remained motionless, not out of mere surprise, but fear. Fear of what Kaelion would do. Fear of the defiance I had dared to show. He was a leader who commanded absolute obedience, a man few had ever seen challenged—yet I had done so.Kaelion’s jaw tightened, a bruise already forming from my strike, but his smirk never faltered. If anything, it deepened. Chapter 8Seraphina’s POVThe cold iron door slammed shut behind me with a deafening clang, the sound echoing through the dark, damp dungeon. My breath came out in short, shallow puffs, the chill in the air seeping into my bones. The faint torchlight barely illuminated the stone walls, casting shadows that danced with every flicker.I took a slow, steadying breath, but it did little to calm the simmering anger inside me. My wrists throbbed where Kaelion had gripped them, and my body ached from the struggle. The scent of damp stone and decay filled my nostrils, a grim reminder of what this place was—a tomb for those deemed unworthy.A sharp, mocking laugh broke through the silence.“Did you really think you were special?” Kiera sneered, stepping forward. Her red hair gleamed under the dim light, her eyes filled with cold amusement. She crossed her arms, towering over me as I sat slumped against the wall, my body exhausted but my mind still burning with defiance.“I don’t think anything

Chapter 9 - Seraphina’s POVThe darkness of the cell was suffocating, but it was the silence that gnawed at my mind the most. I had lost track of how long I had been here. Time had become meaningless without any reference, especially since Kiera hadn’t bothered to feed me—when she did, it was never enough. Most of the time, though, I was left to endure the gnawing ache of hunger, just as I was now.Every breath I took felt heavy, as if the very air itself was conspiring against me. I pulled my knees to my chest, hugging them tightly, trying to hold onto whatever shred of control I had left.My wolf was restless, pacing frantically in the depths of my mind like a trapped animal. What was I even saying? She was the trapped one. How many years had it been since I last set her free? Her presence flickering erratically between waves of burning rage and hollow silence. Every lead I followed only seemed to pull me deeper into the shadows, and it was becoming harder to tell what was real and what was a carefully constructed lie.She was a mystery wrapped in chaos, and damn it, I needed answers.Dax found the rogue first. My Gamma never wasted time, especially on those who crossed us. He shoved the man into the clearing. The rogue was disheveled, eyes wide with fear. “He’s got a message for you, Alpha Kaelion,” Dax said. “From Seraphina’s father.”I stepped forward, narrowing my eyes. “That’s a hell of a claim.”The rogue swallowed hard. “I-I was with her pack before she left. 28 Kaelion’s POV I didn’t trust this woman. Luna was too smooth, too sweet, her words like honey laced with poison. And the way she kept smiling at Seraphina, like she actually cared, made my skin crawl. I watched her closely as she raised her glass to her lips, sipping her wine slowly, her eyes flicking between me and Seraphina. She was playing a game, and I hated not knowing the rules. When the food arrived, I didn’t hesitate. I reached for Seraphina’s plate, pulling it toward me. She didn’t protest, just watched as I picked up her fork and cut into the meat. Slowly, I brought the piece to my mouth and chewed. Luna let out a soft chuckle, tilting her head. “My, how protective,” she mused, swirling the wine in her glass. I didn’t answer. I was too focused on the taste. Nothing seemed off. No bitterness. No strange aftertaste. But that didn’t mean anything. If Luna wanted to harm Seraphina, she wouldn’t be so obvious. After a moment, I placed the plate back in front of her.
