"Sierra! You won't believe what I have to tell you!"
Sierra winced as she heard Callie’s enthusiastic voice over the phone. People next to her shot irritated looks her way as if she had just made a huge mistake.
Well, accepting a video call while sitting in a waiting room for a job interview was probably a criminal-level offense that deserved to be considered a fatal mistake.
"Callie, can I hear the news later? I’ll be happy to hear whatever you have to tell me, but right now, I’m about to interview for a job, and I don’t know when they’ll call me in."
Callie frowned, "Hell! Since when was a job interview more important than me? Do you really not want to hear my story?"
"You know that’s not what I meant. I just said I’d hear it later after my interview is done. They might call me at any moment, and I don’t want to make you cut your story short."
"Oh my gosh! Why aren’t you prioritizing me right now, Sierra? Is that job really more important than my story?" Callie pouted, and Sierra knew her friend was upset with her.
"This job is really important, but of course, not more important than you. Don’t worry. I’m free this afternoon, so I can come over to your apartment, or you can come to my place to spend the night."
"Do I really have to wait until this afternoon to tell you my story? This is so unfair because—"
"Miss Kayleigh,"
Sierra looked up from her phone as a blonde woman opened the door and called her name. She quickly hung up the phone and stood up, "That’s me." she said.
"You’ll be interviewing directly with Mr. Scott, as you’ve been selected as a candidate for his new secretary. It’s important for him to know your character to determine if you’re a good fit for the position." The woman spoke while walking beside her, leading her to the room where the interview would take place.
"Me?" Sierra pointed at herself, "As far as I remember, I didn’t apply for a secretary position, did I?" She was a little panicked at this new information and couldn’t stop thinking about how mad Callie probably was for hanging up before she could finish her story.
"Yes, but the company is in need of a new secretary for Mr Scott, and HR believes your background fits the role. If you’re willing, you’ll be interviewing with Mr. Scott. However, if not, you can leave now."
Sierra blinked.
Becoming a secretary was a crazy opportunity.
It was insane.
For whatever reason, there was no way she was going to pass up on this crazy opportunity.
"Of course, I’m willing to interview with Mr. Scott. I was just a little surprised. That’s why I reacted that way."
"Sure, Miss. You can meet him in his office."
Sierra nodded and followed the blonde woman down a long hallway, then took the elevator to the top floor, which she guessed was Mr. Scott’s personal floor.
Oh God, she really hoped luck was on her side this time.
She also wanted to share the good news with Callie, not only hear her good news.
"Good morning, Mr. Scott." Sierra bowed her head as she entered the spacious, luxurious office at the very top floor—the most lavish space in the entire building.
The woman who had guided her quickly left the room, leaving Sierra alone with the man in the black suit sitting behind a laptop. Her legs felt a bit shaky from nervousness, but she prayed her luck wouldn’t allow her to mess up.
"Miss Sierra Dove Kayleigh, please have a seat." The man looked up from his desk, and Sierra was met with his piercing black eyes framed by long lashes. His jawline was strong, his nose sharp, and his tan skin didn’t come from sunlight—it seemed natural. His tanned complexion complemented his jet-black hair perfectly.
Sierra blinked several times, realizing her potential new boss was incredibly handsome. Hell, was this a blessing or a curse for her?
She could work under pressure, but could she work under the influence of a good-looking man every day?
"Miss Kayleigh? Are you okay?"
Sierra cleared her throat and nodded. "Sorry for that, Mr. Scott," she said as she sat down in the chair in front of him.
"That’s okay," the man nodded. "My name is Axton Frederich Scott. I believe my staff already told you I need a new secretary, right?"

Sierra swore this was one of the most uncomfortable moments of her life. If the awkwardness of this morning wasn’t enough, tonight wasn’t much different as she sat with Callie in the lounge on the second floor.
Two cups of tea and Callie's favorite biscuits were placed on the table. All the maids in the house knew what Callie liked and would prepare it before she even asked.
"There’s something I need to tell you because..." Sierra couldn’t find the right words to explain, so she stayed silent for a few seconds.
Right after Callie knocked on her door, Sierra jumped off of Axton and forgot everything they had done. She dressed quickly and slipped out of the room without letting Callie see that her husband was in bed with her.
Sierra hadn’t said anything to Axton because she was sure he knew what to do. Rather than letting Callie into her room, she chose to sit in the lounge, as they often did in the evenings after work.
"You’re making me a little worried." Callie frowned and shifted closer to Sierra, "Why didn’t you go home with Axton? This place is farther from your home, so it would’ve made sense to go with him, Sierra. He acted strange when he came home with a cut on his face, and you disappeared all afternoon, too."
Sierra shook her head.
Going home with Axton, when her mind was about to explode from what he had done to her, was the last thing on her mind.
"Actually, I wanted to talk to you about what happened today." Sierra let out a long sigh.
"What happened today? Is there a problem?" Callie frowned. "Look, I didn’t come to your room to ask about what happened. I came because I brought you a new hair dryer. But you brought me here, and now I know something's up with you. Tell me, what’s going on?"
"The debt collectors came to the office, and they caused a scene there. Axton came to help me. He hit the debt collectors, but unfortunately, someone hit him in the face, and he got hurt."
Sierra watched as Callie’s shoulders slumped upon hearing the truth. From her reaction, she realized Axton hadn’t told his wife what had happened.
"Did you get hurt?" Callie asked softly.
Sierra shook her head. "Axton paid off my debt and handed over my house deed."
Callie gave no response, and Sierra began to feel worried. She reached for Callie’s hand, gripping it tightly. "Nothing will change between us if you’re worried about that. Our agreement still stands, and I’ll give you a child, Callie," she said earnestly.
Callie looked up, and Sierra saw her face streaked with tears. "You won’t go back on your promise, will you?"
Sierra shook her head. "No, Callie. I would never do that."
Callie didn’t respond, and Sierra knew her friend was doubting her words.
"Do you know that Axton’s family never fully accepted me because they know I can’t give him a child?" Callie wiped her tears, but they kept flowing down her face.
In all the years Sierra had known Callie, she had never seen her in such a bad state—not even when she was first diagnosed with lupus four years ago. Callie had remained the same, even though her life had never been the same since the illness. But now, her best friend was crying in front of her, and there was nothing Sierra could do to fix things except try her hardest to give her a child with her husband.
Having a child and then giving it to her best friend.
It was the craziest idea that had ever crossed her mind, but she knew it was the only way to make things right.
"Axton is an only child, but his father has several brothers. In their family, it’s normal for them to undermine each other. His uncle wants Axton’s position, but they know they can’t take it yet. The family business has never truly been run by a family; everyone is trying to bring Axton down and profit from him. And I’ve given them an opening because they know I can’t give him a child." Callie closed her eyes, and her breathing became irregular as if she was struggling to catch her breath.
"Callie," Sierra looked at her, worried.
"When I was diagnosed with lupus, you were the first person to hug me and tell me everything would be okay. I thought the world worked the way you said it did because I always trusted you. But when I found out that Axton’s parents were worried about him because he married a woman who can’t have children, do you think I would be okay?"
Damn. Sierra wanted to curse the lupus that had taken away all of Callie’s happiness. It wasn’t fair to her best friend. This disease had taken things it had no right to take from Callie.
"I don’t mind the idea of never having my own child. But Axton needs to have a child of his own blood, Sierra. They need an heir with Scott's blood, and I could never allow Axton to lie to his family if we adopted a child and said it was ours. Axton thinks it’s the easiest way, and he doesn’t mind lying to his family, but I can’t."
"You’ll have an heir soon, Callie. You’ll have one soon, trust me." Sierra hugged Callie tightly, feeling her own tears flow as they cried together.
"Do you know how much I’ve wanted to help you since I found out you were in trouble, Sierra? I wanted so badly to pay off all your father’s debts and make your life easier. But I also needed a guarantee that you’d help me until this is all over. I hate myself for not trusting you enough, which led you to be in the mess you're in now."
Sierra tightened her embrace.
She knew how much Callie needed her. She also knew how much this woman loved and cared for her, just as she cared deeply for her. They had been together and known each other for years—no one had ever cared for her more than Callie had since her mother passed away. And for Callie, Sierra would do anything, even sell herself.
"Promise me you’ll end my suffering and give me and Axton a child. That’s all I’ve ever wanted in life, and what I want can only come from you, Sierra."
Sierra closed her eyes.
What could she not give to Callie? If she could, she’d take on Callie’s illness herself. There was no need for Callie to lose the happiness she deserved. Callie had everything—a family that loved her, a husband who was in love with her, a business in the heart of New York City that she had entrusted to others, a lovely home, and a future full of hope. The only thing she needed was a child, and then her life would be perfect.
Compared to Sierra, who had lost everything—her mother, her father’s betrayal, the many hardships she had faced in school, and her struggle to survive with the debts her father had left behind—she was far more deserving of Callie’s disease. At least she wouldn’t mind if she couldn’t have children because she... didn’t plan on getting married or living the life she had always dreamed of. But Callie?
"Sierra, you’re all I have. If you don’t help me, I don’t want to live anymore." Callie’s voice broke through Sierra’s thoughts, pulling her back to reality.
"Callie, of course, I’ll help you. Didn’t I already tell you that I would—" Sierra looked at Callie in shock and fear. "Callie!" she screamed as she realized Callie had fainted in her arms.
"Callie!"
"What happened?"Sierra held Callie’s hand and sat next to her. She looked up, wiping her tears as Axton stood in front of her—standing beside Callie, who was now lying on her bed after Axton had brought her into the room.Luckily, Axton had arrived shortly after Callie fainted. Sierra didn’t know what she would’ve done if Axton hadn’t come quickly when she screamed and repeatedly called Callie’s name."Callie’s condition has worsened lately. What were you two talking about that made her faint, Sierra? The maid said Callie was crying with you." There was something different in Axton’s voice, and Sierra knew what it was.Everything that had happened just a few minutes ago vanished, and now the air was thick with tension as if they were no longer two people who had ever touched."I told her you had paid off my debt, and I got my house deed back. I think she got emotional because she was worried I wouldn’t follow through with our agreement. I already—""Why did you tell her that?" Axton
Sierra closed her eyes as she felt Axton's hand begin to move down, caressing her private area. Once again, she lost herself in the intense sensation that gripped her, making it impossible to pull away."Ah," she bit her lip tightly, struggling to keep any sounds from escaping. She hoped she had locked the bathroom door or that, at the very least, this place was soundproof so no noise would slip out of this room. Her eyes remained shut as she felt water trickle down her face, following the path of Axton’s fingers as if drawing a trail on her chest. His lips were there, and Sierra really hoped he would end this game quickly, just as she wanted.Sierra was entirely prepared when Axton lifted one of her legs and guided himself inside her. Her eyes stayed closed, but now her hands searched for something to hold on to as Axton moved in and out of her. He pushed hard, his hands gripping her waist tightly as if setting a rhythm for their movements.Sierra felt as if she were going crazy. She
Flashback5 Years Ago…Axton frowned as two women approached his table. One of them, with black hair, was waving at him. The other had blonde hair, and Axton swore he recognized her face.“Hey, Axton. Sorry for being late. I had to drag Sierra out of her room to accompany me here, and she was really hard to pull out,” the black-haired woman smiled while rolling her eyes.“Wait,” Axton muttered, furrowing his brows. He glanced at the two women alternately, trying to piece together the puzzle forming in his mind. This was a blind date, their first meeting. Yet, he found himself facing two women, both of whom happened to appear in the photos Callie had sent him.So, which one of them was Callie?“Oh, I’m sorry! My name is Callie. You’re Axton, right?” The black-haired woman extended her hand, which Axton promptly shook.“To be honest, I was a bit surprised for a moment. I thought you’d come alone.”“Ah, yes. This is my friend, Sierra. We’re always together wherever and whenever. So don’t
This morning felt as crazy as the mornings before.Sierra didn’t know how to face Axton after what happened between them last night. To be honest, she could never shake off everything they had done, and it frustrated her.Throughout her life, she had only dated a few times and never slept with any of them. She only kissed, and that was the boundary she offered to her boyfriends. She had been busy working because she needed money, and she couldn’t remember the last time she dated—maybe two or three years ago. Then, suddenly, she slept with a man who had no ties to her whatsoever. If she felt emotional afterward, was that a normal thing? After walking quite a distance from Callie and Axton’s house, Sierra finally had time to think about everything that had happened. Maybe she would go crazy if she had to stay longer at the dining table and act as if everything was fine when her head was so noisy with all her wild thoughts.A car horn startled her steps, and she cursed inwardly—damning w
“You didn’t fire them, did you?” Sierra walked into Axton’s office after waiting for 15 minutes until the three women from the finance department left. She had wanted to go in earlier but knew she couldn’t. She couldn’t argue with Axton while his employees were in the room.“You don’t need to worry or care about them, Sierra. I’ll hire new employees if that’s what I need,” Axton said flatly.“What?” Sierra couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “Look, they won’t stop talking about rumors about me if I keep working with you. Honestly, it’s not entirely their fault, and I want to say that they’re not completely wrong about the things they’re saying about me.”“So, you’re just going to stay quiet after they called you a slut?”“They didn’t call me that—I admitted it myself. Do you think I’m not a slut after the deal we made?” Sierra almost laughed at herself for saying such a thing. But before she could, Axton grabbed both her arms and suddenly pushed her.She was shocked by his actions.
Sierra might burn in hell after everything she has done. However, she knew that she had no choice in her life. She had let everything fall apart and might make it even worse over time."How about your life, Sierra? We hardly ever see you because Callie says you're always busy. Where do you work now?"Sierra lifted her head from the teacup in her hands and looked at Amy, a brunette woman who had just asked her the question."Me?" She smiled briefly, "Nothing has changed in my life. I still work at Callie's husband's company until now.""Wow, you've been working there for so long. Don't you have any plans to work somewhere else?"Sierra didn’t understand why Callie brought her friends home and ended up throwing a tea party in the backyard. Surprisingly, she was also expected to join the tea party."Guys, Sierra is the best secretary Axton has ever had. She works well and rarely makes mistakes. My husband needs a secretary like her to help with his work. So, I hope you don't make Sierra
Sierra ended up unable to sleep all night as she thought about what might happen to her.She had never imagined she would find herself in a situation where she might be pregnant. And now that it was happening, she had to face the harsh reality—she didn’t have a husband and wasn’t in a serious relationship with anyone. She had slept with her best friend’s husband, and now, she might be carrying his child after everything they had done together. When morning came, Sierra honestly couldn’t think of what to do.She followed Callie, who had been very enthusiastic since the early hours. Callie prepared breakfast and made her finish a bowl of soup before they left for the doctor. Callie hadn’t told Axton anything, and he looked confused when Sierra said she was taking the day off because she had plans with Callie. In truth, Callie had forbidden her from working since the day before, insisting they go straight to the hospital. However, Sierra refused because she remembered an important work s
FlashbackSeven Years Ago…X191016: Send me your photo so I won’t mistake you for someone else. I’m sure there will be plenty of people wearing red sweaters, and I don’t want to mess up by not recognizing you.Sierra turned her head when she heard a notification from the dating app she was using. For a moment, she put down her hairdryer and read the message. Her heart raced as she read it—a message from her friend… or whatever she should call him. They had been exchanging messages for six months, but they had never met in person because X, as Sierra called him, had not yet returned to New York. He was studying in the UK and had just finished his degree, returning to New York two days ago. Today was the day of their first meeting. How did Sierra feel? Of course, she was extremely nervous.Honestly, this was something she had never done before—using a dating app and connecting with a stranger she had never met. However, she found herself feeling comfortable with what she was doing, and h
Lately, Sierra had grown fond of gardening. She enjoyed planting flowers, and since she had a spacious backyard, she was free to do whatever she pleased there. After returning from their honeymoon across various countries, she had already planned a beautiful concept for her backyard. Her mother used to love gardening, even after coming home tired from work, though they didn’t have an adequate plot of land to do so. Now that Sierra had better opportunities than her mother ever had, she wanted to honor that hobby—bringing something her mother loved into her new home. When Sienna was with her grandmother, Sierra found herself with free time to indulge in something she enjoyed, keeping herself entertained so she wouldn't feel bored. Occasionally, she would step out to purchase gardening tools and thoroughly enjoyed those moments. In the past, she couldn’t afford this kind of relaxed lifestyle because she always had a demanding schedule. Since college, she’d been accustomed to working part
Axton made Sierra leave the United States for a honeymoon in Europe one month after their wedding. He didn’t tell her where they would go or how long they would be on vacation, leaving Sienna with her grandparents. He only said that he had everything planned but wanted it to be a surprise, so the only thing Sierra had to do was to look beautiful every morning and look forward to each surprise he would give. This morning, they woke up in Norway after spending the night watching the beautiful Aurora Borealis. It felt like a dream—a place so beautiful it seemed unreachable by humans. But Sierra was there with Axton, and it was a truly wonderful experience. Then, in the night, they traveled to Switzerland and stayed there for an unknown number of days, visiting places they would explore.“I can’t believe I’m unemployed and traveling the world with you,” she commented while standing near the window of the villa they were staying in.The view of nature there was so soothing to her eyes. Eve
Sierra and Axton had agreed to host a simple wedding celebration attended only by close family and friends. Most of the guests were Axton’s family and friends, as Sierra didn’t have either.Well, she had invited Andrea—if the woman could even be categorized as a friend. And Damian…Actually, Sierra wasn’t the one who invited Damian. It was Axton, which had completely surprised her.“To my daughter-in-law, Sierra Scott, I love you, pretty girl,” Axton’s mother said, blowing an air kiss and smiling warmly. Sierra laughed as she stood next to Axton. After all the formal wedding, it was time for speeches from the couple’s closest people. Sadly, Sierra had to remind herself once again that she had no parents or close friends to speak for her.“I always wished I could have met Sophia, Sierra’s mother because she raised such an incredible woman with all her strength,” Axton’s mother began. “Sierra is a passionate woman with a beautiful perspective on everything in the world. She loves everyo
Sierra stared at her reflection in the mirror, disbelief evident in her eyes.It was hard to accept that all of this was real. But of course, she wasn’t dreaming as she stood there in her wedding gown, her face adorned with flawless makeup. She was almost too afraid to touch her own skin, worried she might ruin the carefully applied look.“You look absolutely stunning,” Axton’s mother said, wiping tears from the corner of her eyes as she admired Sierra standing in front of the mirror. “You are the most beautiful bride I’ve ever seen.”Sierra smiled and turned her head slightly. “Don’t exaggerate, Mom,” she replied, taking a deep breath. “I feel unsure about walking out there. What if people judge me?”The woman immediately took her hand, looking at her with genuine warmth. “When Callie—the most important person in your life—gives her blessing for what you’re about to do, why should you care about what anyone else thinks?”Sierra had read the letter Callie had given her. She must have
“I’m here,” Sierra said softly.A week after receiving Callie’s letter and all the gifts the woman had sent her, Sierra finally decided to visit Callie.“I also stopped by the store you worked with, just to thank them,” Sierra said, taking a deep breath as she sat down on the damp ground of Callie’s grave, ignoring the possibility of her skirt getting dirty. “They were confused, looking for me at your old house. I don’t live there anymore, Callie. I moved after giving birth because Axton thought it would be better for us to find a new home. Staying there made it hard to move on, constantly reminded of you.”She glanced at Axton, who was walking toward her from a distance.Today, she wasn’t alone. Axton and Sienna had come with her. But when they arrived, Sienna wanted to breastfeed, so Sierra left them in the car. Axton could handle her to help her drink her milk, and it wasn’t an issue for him.“I’m sorry I didn’t realize how much you cared for me and Sienna. I thought you were angry
Sierra couldn’t blink, and it felt like time had stopped for a moment. Her body felt stiff, even though the only thing she desperately wanted to do was run away. What Damian had said entirely left her at a loss for words. If she were honest, those words moved her deeply, making her feel even guiltier toward him. That wasn’t what he should have said. Damian should have angrily cursed at them for causing a scene in front of his apartment in the morning. He should have... He could have said something harsh to her if he truly wanted to show how upset he was with everything. But instead of doing that, Damian chose to say something kind—words that should never have come from someone who had been wronged.Thankfully, Axton could read her mind well enough to step forward, grab her hand, and lead her away from there.“Let’s go home!” he said, walking briskly.Of course, Sierra followed Axton. She walked without turning her head because she didn’t want to see Damian again.“I never knew that Da
This morning, Sierra cooked breakfast for everyone because she knew that the maids in her house must be exhausted after participating in last night's party. She didn't just prepare breakfast for her family but also for the entire staff."This is a simple menu, but I hope you'll like it," she said with a quick smile. "I'm not great at cooking, but I made sure it's safe to eat." She brought the food to the dining table near the kitchen. Usually, the maids and workers gathered there to eat together, which is why Sierra had come in now."You really shouldn't have gone to so much trouble. You must be exhausted after last night's party," said one of the staff.Sierra waved her hand with a playful smile. "Please, don't be so stiff when talking to me. If I'm tired, then you all must be tired too. This is just a small thing I can do. But this afternoon, I'll ask Axton to buy food for us all so you don’t have to cook.""Oh God, looks like this party made you happy," Percy commented casually, un
Sierra felt much more relaxed once she was back with Axton and Sienna. Of course, they were still the center of attention since it was their party, but now she didn’t have to stand alone in the middle of it all.“I don’t know what to give her, but she seems to like everything I give her,” a middle-aged woman, whom Axton introduced as his aunt, handed Sierra a large paper bag with the logo of a luxury brand.Sierra was quite stunned by this, but she quickly nodded and offered a polite smile. “Thank you for taking the time to visit Sienna. I hope you enjoy the party tonight.”“Well, of course, I’m enjoying it,” the woman smiled. “Isn’t Alicia the one who organized all of this? I’ve been to every one of her parties, and I can always tell which ones she’s organized. And I can say this one is definitely hers.”Sierra turned her head toward Axton and smiled again. “She put this together in just three days, and it amazes me.”“She’s a legend when it comes to parties in New York,” the woman c
Sienna’s bedtime routine often started with the family gathering in the living room after dinner. Percy and Bethany would prepare light snacks, and once Sienna fell asleep, Axton’s parents would head back to their home.“I’ve been thinking about this since Sienna was born,” Axton’s mother began with a warm smile, holding Sienna close in her arms. “But things have been quite hectic lately. I just wanted to spend as much time as possible with this beautiful girl. However, all our relatives and acquaintances keep asking about her, and I don’t want us to waste too much time hosting them one by one.”Sierra frowned slightly, resting her head on Axton’s shoulder as he held her hand and played with her fingers.“Some family members managed to visit the hospital, but others haven’t had the chance yet. They keep asking me when they can come, but I don’t know when to let them. I’m worried they’ll take up too much of our time.”Sierra’s frown deepened, but she remained silent.“So, what are you
