*Two Years Later*
Five minutes.
He had five minutes to get to the East Gate, and he’ll bid the godforsaken academy goodbye.
For two years, Cole had been stuck here. For two years, he had wanted nothing but to get the hell out.
And finally, after months of trying, he would be free.
The witch, Genevieve, was a hard shell to crack. She was the one who brought him here, and Cole was sure to make her life a living hell because of it. But, a year ago, she promised that if he could leave her alone for twelve months, she'd arrange for him to go.
Of course, it hasn’t been easy. Cole was called the Prince of Darkness for a reason. Everyone here feared him, or at least respected him, even the headmistress. So, going all this time without poking fun at Genevieve was hard, but hell, it was worth it.
He rechecked his watch, which showed him that he had four minutes to go. He could make it. He had to.
Unici Academy for Supernaturals wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t the place for Cole. He was dark, powerful and the only Phoenix in the entire school. There was no way he belonged here. But Genevieve, that damn witch—she was hell-bent on keeping him here, telling him nothing but it was ‘her duty.’
But her duty can kiss his ass.
He was busting out of here. And he was sure as hell going to enjoy squeezing her neck while he did.
That, obviously, wasn’t part of the deal. But did she really expect that he’d just leave quietly after all this time and not get one last chance to cause some real damage? Hell no. She deserved it, and he was going to ensure she felt his wrath.
Three minutes.
Of course, he could’ve easily dashed through the school like a maniac with his supernatural speed. But, someone was bound to notice if he did. So, he moved at a collected pace but still fast enough to ensure he wouldn’t miss his chance.
Today was also the perfect day for him to slip out unnoticed. The new supernaturals were coming in, so there was much more in and out traffic than usual. It happens every year. So, the barriers wouldn’t make any alerting vibrations when Genevieve set him free.
It was all perfect. And it was finally going to happen.
Cole’s strides became longer as he moved towards his goal. Finally, the gate was in sight, and he knew he could be there with a minute to spear if he kept his pace.
But then something—or someone, rather—bumped into him. A tiny squealing sound came from her, and her grip on his shirt was iron to keep herself from falling.
Her books crashed to the ground, and her phone skidded across the grass, crashing into a tree.
“Oh my gosh. I’m so sorry,” she mumbled, and Cole no longer noticed anything around him.
He no longer remembered his goal two seconds ago. All he could see and hear was… her.
If it was anyone else who bumped into him like this—even the headmistress herself, Cole knew damn well they would have seen his wrath. They wouldn’t even want to show their faces in this academy again.
But this girl—whoever she was—all she did was talk, and she had him paralysed both by the mind and by his body.
She stepped away from him and ran to collect her phone, which was now in pieces. She had yet to look at him, but he saw all of her.
It felt like he knew her—like his entire purpose of living was in this small person right in front of him. Yet, he knew had never met her in his life.
He watched her movements. So gracious and delicate, as if she didn’t want to hurt the grass. A frown lingered on her lips as she examined her phone, and Cole gathered the books she had dropped when she bumped into him.
Her name was scribbled on the front in dainty handwriting. Syanna.
Syanna.
It rang in his mind like a familiar song and caused his body to move with tingles he had never felt before.
Gosh. What was this? What was this thing he was feeling for this girl he didn’t even know?
“It’s okay, I guess. I’m sorry for bumping into you like that—” But she stopped as she looked at him for the first time, and her eyes lit with something like realisation as the phone slipped from her hands again.
Her fingers trembled as they rose to cover her mouth, and if Cole didn’t know better, he thought she might cry.
But all she did was stare at him for an entire minute until her face fell in…hurt?
Why would she be hurt?
“I’m Syanna,” she said, sounding slightly out of context as if she were testing him. She watched him a bit longer and pulled her dark, long hair from her face up into a high messy ponytail.
She stared at him for a bit longer, and Cole had no idea why he didn’t say anything. But then her face fell in defeat, and she released her hair, allowing it to fall over her shoulders again in voluminous curls.
“Sorry.” She cleared her throat and avoided his eyes at all costs. “You seemed like you were in a rush to be somewhere, and I needed to find my roommate. I’m sorry, I don’t need to tell you anything. Sorry.”
“Why are you apologising so much?” Cole asked, finally somehow finding his voice.
Syanna shrugged, still not meeting his eyes. “I need to go.” And then, she did.
She retrieved her books from him and grabbed her phone before moving down the path like fire was on her heels.
Cole watched her in confusion. He was confused about how she affected him so much and why her demeanour suddenly changed when she looked at him.
Syanna.
How could one girl do so much to him in three minutes?
And then it hit him. Three minutes!
Shit.
Without even thinking, he dashed towards the East Gate with supernatural speed, arriving in a split second. But as he suspected, he was too late. Genevieve, along with the portal, was gone, leaving him once again trapped here.
And if he knew Genevieve, she wouldn’t give him another chance to leave, at least for another year. She wouldn’t risk it, and she’d tell him specifically that it was his fault that he was late.
“Fuck!” he shouted, slamming his fist against the gate. The twigs and vines on the gate shrivelled and turned black, falling to the ground along with the other dead leaves he had unintentionally burned.
He closed his eyes, trying to compose himself so he didn’t set the damn school on fire. But he was angry. Gosh, he was angry.
He was mad at himself for missing this one chance. Mad at Genevieve for being so damn specific about time.
But most of all, he was livid with HER—with her mesmerising eyes and enchanting voice. What had Syanna done to him to make him miss this one chance? And now, he was yet again stuck here.
Stuck at this academy all because of her.
He didn’t remember her. She stared him dead in the eyes, and Syanna was certain he didn’t know who the hell she was. But how could he not? How could the man she had seen in her dreams for the past two years and thought about every passing second not know who she was? It was bad enough that she was here at a school for supernaturals when she was the only human. But could she really exist with him on the same campus, knowing they knew each other, but he obviously didn’t? Gosh. This was a nightmare. “Just look on the bright side,” Juliet, Syanna’s roommate and only friend, said. “What’s that?” she mumbled, picking at her doughnut. “He’s a jerk, anyway. You dodged a bullet.” Syanna gasped. Coming from anyone else, this would’ve seemed logical and normal. But Juliet was a Cupid—one of three in the entire academy. In the short two weeks that Syanna had known her, Juliet had never said anything bad about anyone or anything. It was just in Juliet’s nature to be friendly and, well
Syanna should’ve heeded Juliet’s advice. She shouldn’t have looked back. Because when she did, she wanted to run. No, forget that. She wanted to evaporate into thin air. The look on Cole’s face as he stormed toward them was nothing but wrath, and he was staring directly at her. What the hell did she do? Only ten minutes ago, he was staring at her with a blank expression as if he didn’t even know her! And now… now he was looking at her as if he wanted to kill her—as if she was the very bane of his existence, and he would do anything to wipe her from the face of this earth. The worst part? Syanna had no idea why. The flowers along the ground shrivelled and died as he got closer, and Syanna’s grip on Juliet’s hand grew impossibly tighter. What would he do to her? What COULD he do to her here at Unici? It was then that Syanna realised he couldn't possibly hurt her right here in front of everyone in the middle of the first day of school. And so, she decided that she wasn’t
The bad thing about being a human in a school full of supernaturals was that one would be considered a ‘Unique.’ As Syanna had gathered from Juliet, the Uniques were the rare supernaturals in the academy. In this particular class, the supernaturals who weren’t common studied together. It was a cool group, with an actual banshee and gargoyle. Syanna didn’t even know those things existed. The class consisted of about twenty people, with two or three creatures alike, and of course, the human, Syanna. The good thing was Juliet was also in this class. The bad thing was, so was Cole. And right now, he was perched on a girl’s desk, and Syanna’s chest had been squeezing since the second he started talking to her. The girl seemed utterly annoyed by his presence, but the way he smirked at her proved that they knew each other quite well, even if that wasn’t in a good way. The girl's eyes were blue and diamond-like—like most of the high witches in the school—and her hair was jet black,
Cole didn’t plan for this to happen. He didn’t get up this morning and decide that he’d push on a stupid brick and get him and Syanna stuck in a witch’s secret library. Yet, he couldn’t deny the fact that he liked it. She looked terrified, that was for sure. And Cole didn’t know if he liked it or not. On one end, this seemed like what she deserved. But on the other hand, seeing her in pain made his chest feel weird. She was pacing the tiny room with her hands in her long, silky hair. Cole couldn’t help but wonder how soft it was, and her big brown eyes were wide in terror. He also noticed how her breaths had gotten shorter and heavier, but he knew it wasn’t because of his presence this time. She obviously didn't like tiny, cramped places. Cole had two choices. He could either relish in the sight of her in pain, knowing that it would be what she deserved for doing whatever the hell she did to him. Or, he could actually try to help her. Help her? He has never helped anyone b
Screw bad decisions. Screw regrets and everything bit of self-loathing she would feel after this moment. Because right now, all Syanna wanted was to feel more of Cole. She knew it was a bad idea from the start to sit beside him. She wasn’t sure if he was aware, but something in his eyes and his entire aura was seductive. They undoubtedly had a connection that she still couldn’t seem to understand, too. So, the moment he held her, she was done for. And now he had his nose buried in her neck, driving her crazy with just the bare hint of his breath fanning against her. It was warm, and by the second, it grew hotter as his fingers dug into her waist and his body drew closer to her. “What is it about you, Syanna?” Cole mumbled, but Syanna could tell it wasn’t a question to be answered. “From the minute I saw you yesterday, you have been doing something to me that no one has ever done before. No one.”“I’m sorry,” she found herself saying, completely forgetting that she was mad at him f
It’s been a week. An entire week had passed, and Cole had made it his duty to ignore Syanna at all costs. He would see her and snarl at her, but he wouldn’t say a single word to her. Syanna didn’t know why. On one hand, she assumed he was still upset about the entire ‘stuck in a witch’s library and almost kissing’ thing, not that it was any fault of hers. But deep down, Syanna knew he was avoiding her because of what she saw. It puzzled her. Because Cole didn’t seem like the type of person to be ashamed of his darkness. From what she’s gathered from Juliet, Cole was a devil in the body of a handsome phoenix. He never changed or hid from anyone. So, she had no idea why he would start now. Maybe she should’ve just left him alone. Perhaps that was best. But every time she closed her eyes, she would remember the feeling of his breath against her neck, and she’d ache for more. Gosh, how she wanted more of him. And she hated herself for it. She felt like a love-sick fool. This
It happened again. The second the vampires arrived, Cole’s eyes grew dark. And if it was even possible, they were darker than they were the first time it happened. Syanna jumped from her seated position as more and more vampires arrived at the border. It was about twenty against Cole and Isaac, and Syanna knew it was an unfair match. “Don’t,” Cole warned without looking at her, as if sensing that she was about to approach them. “Stay behind the border.” “But why?” a vampire asked through a snarl. His blood-red eyes watched Syanna as if she was the garnish on his plate. She knew he was the leader from his position and the way the others were arranged around him. “You’re not getting anywhere near her,” Cole growled, and the other vampires shrunk back as the grass beneath his feet shrivelled and turned black. Syanna gulped as she watched the encounter. She wanted to scream, run, and, most of all, cry. She wanted to cry because a group of vampires was ready to have her head,
In a minute when it felt like the world had utterly stopped spinning, Syanna didn’t know what to do besides scream. One moment she was trying to stop Cole from committing murder, and in the next, someone or something had grabbed her from behind. Isaac was the only one who saw it coming. He had been pushing against the barrier and growling at something behind her. But Syanna had been too consumed in Cole to notice, and Cole was too busy threatening the vampires. Either way, he wouldn’t be able to help. He was behind the barrier, and there was no way that Syanna could run back to the other side now. It was too late. The sun had started to dip beneath the hills, and the birds flew to their respective homes in flocks of blue and green. At least she’d go peacefully. At least she could watch the beauty of nature as this vampire--because she was sure that he was--would kill her. The minute it all became clear to Cole, his eyes widened, and he launched forward, but was stopped by the barr
It had been six hours since Genevieve was still not back yet. But Cole wasn’t worried about her. No matter how long she was away, he knew she could take care of herself. So there really was no reason for him to worry about her. He knew she didn’t walk there this time. She must’ve taken a portal or something, so she shouldn’t have taken to long to return. But Cole tried not to let it bother him so much. He had to stay calm. Yet, he couldn’t help his nerved. Because if something happened to Genevieve, then that meant he might never get Syanna back. And, hell, the thought was scary. It that didn’t stop the feeling he had in his stomach every passing second. It was almost the same like what he felt the first time he realised that something bad would happen to Syanna, and to think that something else might happen when Genevieve wasn’t here made his stomach ache. There was no way he would’ve known what to do if something were to indeed happen. And if anything happened to Isaac or Sya
Cole was relieved Genevieve was back from the academy, although she won't talk about the demon attack on her last night. He tried to pry it out of her, but she remained tight-lipped. Cole couldn't blame her, though. His own experience with demons had taught him that sometimes, speaking about them could lead to even more trouble. While Genevieve locked herself away in her room, Cole headed out to find the demon that attacked her. He was determined to put an end to it before it harmed anyone else.As he roamed the streets, he kept his senses sharp. He could feel the demon's presence nearby, but it was elusive, flitting from shadow to shadow, never staying in one place for too long. It was like chasing a ghost. Finally, after hours of fruitless searching, Cole saw the demon. It was a hulking beast, towering over him, with skin as black as night and eyes that glowed like embers. Its wings were torn and ragged, and its claws glinted in the moonlight.Cole didn't hesitate. He drew his sword

Two hours had passed since Genevieve left, and Cole was begging to get antsy. He moved from his seat to the chair next to Syanna’s side of the bed, where he held her hand. He knew that her body was practically lifeless, and the real Syanna was inside of Isaac, but he couldn’t sit in front of Isaac and talk to her. It would just seem too weird. “Hey,” he whispered, caressing her cheek with his thumb. “I miss you, Syanna. But I’ll get you back, okay?” He kissed her forehead, and if he didn’t know better, he would’ve thought he saw Isaac’s lips twitch. Cole had to give it to the guy, he was a real friend. He didn’t think he wou
Part 2: The Vampire QueenRain. Gloomy weather had never mattered to Cole before. But now—somehow, he understood why it was always so dark, so cold and so sad. He started at the patch of dirt, hating how the soft patter of rain didn’t wash away the pain in his chest. Cole had no idea how it came to this… how he went from having the love of his life in his arms, to standing in the rain for an hour, staring at the ground. The open world didn’t feel as free as he had anticipated. Although he managed to leave Unici-him and Genevieve—the feeling of the wind in his hair and the bite of freedom on his ski didn’t feel like he had expected it to. Instead, it felt like bondage. It felt like pain, agony and everything in between, not having Syanna by his side. He and Genevieve left Unici two days ago before the headmistress caught onto them, taking Syanna and Isaac with them. Turns out, Genevieve knew of an old, abandoned house about five miles away from Unici. It seemed as if it had been
To say I was shocked was un understatement. I couldn't believe that all this time, so many people had been sent to kill my family. Including Anthony. I gulped and met his eyes, wondering if he somehow still wanted to complete that mission. But he simply continued the story, seeming completely out of it. “Yes,” Anthony confirmed. “But we had killed the wrong people. Your ancestors were smart—smart enough to stay in hiding well.” “But you had already murdered hundreds of people.” “It was about seventy people,” Anthony snapped, though the guilt in his face was evident. “Kids, elders… pregnant women.” “Oh my gosh.” Syanna couldn’t bear it. Dimitri ordered this sort of evil so he could save his own ass? “My mama was the first to fold. She wouldn’t do it a second time. My papa, feeling as though he always needed to protect us as the man of the family, begged her to try again. My sister ran away, and I followed her.” “So, what happened?” Anthony sighed. “I didn’t find my sister
This couldn’t be happening. It just couldn’t. There was no way Syanna was unconscious in Genevieve’s bed, with no sign of life. She wasn’t even breathing normally, and it took everything in Cole not to burn this damn academy to the ground once and for all. “Why isn’t she breathing?” Cole demanded as Genevieve stood in front of the bed where Syanna had been lying unconscious for the last two minutes since they arrived. “She was bitten, Cole.” “What does that mean?” Genevieve seemed on edge, as if, for the first time ever, she didn’t know what to do. And Cole didn’t like that. He sort of depended on Genevieve to always know everything and fix things. But now, she was looking at Syanna as if she had no idea what to do, and it terrified Cole. He paced Genevieve’s room, pulling at the root of his hair as if they were an abomination to him. “It means,” she said, sounding on edge. “That the vampire venom is killing her slowly.” “That doesn’t make any sense!” He threw his hands in the

She felt like she’d been there for hours, when I had only been about twenty minutes. Syanna couldn’t believe someone had kidnapped her in the middle of the school. Wasn’t Unici supposed to be safe? Wasn’t it supposed to be all rainbows and sunshine for all species here? But she guessed not. Because now, she was in someone’s old, abandoned cabin, with a vampire and a large, large class. Syanna knew before he even said anything what his plan had been, but she didn’t want to believe it. Mark assured her that none of the vampires would hurt her or try and drink her blood for power. But he was wrong, and she was wrong for believing him. Mark couldn’t speak for everyone, and it was her mistake for thinking so. So this was the big thing that Cole felt was going to happen, huh? A vampire was hoping to drain her dry and use her blood for power. “You don’t have to do this,” she said for the umpteenth time as the vampire, who’s name she had known as Anthony, stared at her from across the ro
