He didn’t remember her.
She stared him dead in the eyes, and Syanna was certain he didn’t know who the hell she was. But how could he not? How could the man she had seen in her dreams for the past two years and thought about every passing second not know who she was?
It was bad enough that she was here at a school for supernaturals when she was the only human. But could she really exist with him on the same campus, knowing they knew each other, but he obviously didn’t?
Gosh. This was a nightmare.
“Just look on the bright side,” Juliet, Syanna’s roommate and only friend, said.
“What’s that?” she mumbled, picking at her doughnut.
“He’s a jerk, anyway. You dodged a bullet.”
Syanna gasped. Coming from anyone else, this would’ve seemed logical and normal. But Juliet was a Cupid—one of three in the entire academy. In the short two weeks that Syanna had known her, Juliet had never said anything bad about anyone or anything. It was just in Juliet’s nature to be friendly and, well, loving.
Not to mention that she was a romantic. Literally.
When Syanna found Juliet and replayed the entire incident to her, telling her how she and Cole met two years ago, Juliet was actually relieved that he didn’t remember Syanna.
Syanna had no idea that he was even supernatural. When they met at the diner, he was just a lost, confused boy looking for somewhere to rest. Even after invading her dreams every day for the last two years, Syanna had never imagined that he would’ve been a Phoenix, let alone be at the school she had been dreaming of attending since she even knew what it was.
After he left and didn’t come back, Syanna figured that he had found his way home. But when two nights came, and he was in her dreams, then two nights moved to three, four and ten, she realised something wasn’t right.
And it stayed that way for an entire two years, which strangely stopped when she came to Unici two weeks ago.
Unlike all the other new supernaturals, Syanna’s entry to Unici Academy for Supernaturals was planned since the day she was born. She didn’t know why, but Jake—the only father she had ever known—told her everything she needed to know about Unici.
He didn’t keep the supernatural world from her, even though he never told her why she needed to be at Unici once she turned twenty. He simply told her, ‘It’s what your parents would’ve wanted and where you’ll belong.’
But that had been a lie when Syanna arrived and learned that she was the only human here. There were dragons, werewolves, vampires, gryphons, witches and The Uniques, like Juliet, Cole and every other supernatural that were considered rare and special. Even the headmistress was supernatural.
Headmistress Simpson and the other heads of the school were the only fairies in the supernatural world. They were one of the first mythical creatures to exist.
They were given the task by the higher beings to protect the supernatural world on earth. Perhaps an academy was the best choice in their eyes. This way, they could guide the supernaturals from when they were young.
Of course, the supernaturals at the academy weren’t every supernatural creature in the world. Vampires were reckless at heart, witches tended to stay in covens and live among humans, dragons were primarily nomadic, and werewolves lived in packs. Unici was barely a scrap of supernatural creatures, but the fairies still believed they made a difference.
But then came Syanna—the only human in the entire school. Some of the supernaturals didn’t like it, and she had to admit, she didn’t either. It was only when she arrived two weeks ago that she even noticed that she didn’t even know WHY she was here.
It was all orchestrated by her parents, who died when she was a baby, and Jake, who had loved and cared for her since. Syanna was pretty upset with him for hiding the fact that she’d be the only human here, although the other supernaturals weren’t allowed to harm her.
Still, she was so occupied with wondering why Jake hid it and why she was even here to realise that her dreams of Cole had stopped the minute she entered Unici Academy. Was it because they were in the same school all along?
She had spent most of her days in her room with Juliet, catching up on everything she needed to know about the academy. But how could she not have noticed? For something that haunted her for two whole years, she should’ve at least realised that the dreams had stopped.
She felt like an idiot.
“You should stay away from him,” Juliet warned, grabbing hold of Syanna’s doughnut that she had now abandoned.
Syanna frowned but said nothing.
“He’s already hurt you, and you hadn’t even talked for more than three minutes. Cole is bad news, Syanna. They don’t call him the Prince of Darkness for nothing.”
“Wait, what?” Syanna was still trying to wrap her mind around this new image of Cole. The guy she met a year ago wasn’t cold, dark and scary, and he definitely wasn’t a jerk. But perhaps she didn’t know him at all.
“You don’t know?” Juliet scoffed, chewing on her pastry. “He’s hot and all, but he’s the biggest jerk on campus with the most annoying temper. No one—not even the headmistress—dear tries to get him angry. It gets… ugly. Rumour has it, he’s more than supernatural. He’s like a superior being.”
“No way.” Syanna couldn’t try to fathom this.
“Yes, way,” Juliet insisted. “He’s bad news, Syanna. So, call yourself lucky for escaping him.”
Syanna didn’t want to believe it, but how could she not? She had just witnessed the most embarrassing moment of her life when she ran into him, and he had no idea who she was.
Was she really that forgettable? Did she wrap herself in that stupid blanket she had found trampled in the mud in vain all this time?
Of course she did, and she felt like a fool.
Juliet was the sweetest person she knew. It was sort of her nature, being a Cupid and all. Juliet would see the utter best in literally anyone—even a serial killer! So Syanna should’ve known that Cole was truly a jerk if Juliet, of all people, said so from her own lips.
And now, she won’t deny it any longer.
This was her chance to start new and fresh. Her dreams of him stopped when she came here, and she could finally enjoy being at Unici and somehow focus on finding her true purpose.
The academy, after all, was wonderful.
It was massive—probably even larger than her hometown. Unici was for supernaturals of all age groups, but they didn’t mingle. So, the younger ones had their section of the campus blocked by massive gates, and so did the teenagers and, of course, the young adults where Syanna and the others fell in.
The buildings were ancient, each made from brownish bricks, with statues of different creatures at every corner. Whichever part of the ground wasn’t grass was covered in golden-like bricks, making the entire place look magical. Then again, it was a school for ‘supernaturals.’
Right now, they were at Juliet’s favourite chill place, and Syanna could easily see it becoming hers as well. It was a little pastry shop near the Ivy Lake on campus, owned by a small family of gophers. As far as Syanna could see, there were the best doughnuts in the academy, and they sat at the tables outside, where they had the perfect view of the crystal lake.
It’s said that Ivy Lake has healing powers and could heal any wound. It was a sight to behold, along with everything else at the academy.
So, there really was no reason for Syanna to be drooping around thinking about Cole.
Screw Cole.
He was a jerk and didn’t deserve a minute of her thoughts.
If he could forget her so easily, then so could she.
“Are you okay?” Juliet asked, holding her hand across the table.
Syanna nodded. “I’ll be fine.”
“Good. Because, don’t look now, but Cole is heading this way.”
Syanna’s eyes widened. “What?”
“And he does not look happy.”
Syanna should’ve heeded Juliet’s advice. She shouldn’t have looked back. Because when she did, she wanted to run. No, forget that. She wanted to evaporate into thin air. The look on Cole’s face as he stormed toward them was nothing but wrath, and he was staring directly at her. What the hell did she do? Only ten minutes ago, he was staring at her with a blank expression as if he didn’t even know her! And now… now he was looking at her as if he wanted to kill her—as if she was the very bane of his existence, and he would do anything to wipe her from the face of this earth. The worst part? Syanna had no idea why. The flowers along the ground shrivelled and died as he got closer, and Syanna’s grip on Juliet’s hand grew impossibly tighter. What would he do to her? What COULD he do to her here at Unici? It was then that Syanna realised he couldn't possibly hurt her right here in front of everyone in the middle of the first day of school. And so, she decided that she wasn’t
The bad thing about being a human in a school full of supernaturals was that one would be considered a ‘Unique.’ As Syanna had gathered from Juliet, the Uniques were the rare supernaturals in the academy. In this particular class, the supernaturals who weren’t common studied together. It was a cool group, with an actual banshee and gargoyle. Syanna didn’t even know those things existed. The class consisted of about twenty people, with two or three creatures alike, and of course, the human, Syanna. The good thing was Juliet was also in this class. The bad thing was, so was Cole. And right now, he was perched on a girl’s desk, and Syanna’s chest had been squeezing since the second he started talking to her. The girl seemed utterly annoyed by his presence, but the way he smirked at her proved that they knew each other quite well, even if that wasn’t in a good way. The girl's eyes were blue and diamond-like—like most of the high witches in the school—and her hair was jet black,
Cole didn’t plan for this to happen. He didn’t get up this morning and decide that he’d push on a stupid brick and get him and Syanna stuck in a witch’s secret library. Yet, he couldn’t deny the fact that he liked it. She looked terrified, that was for sure. And Cole didn’t know if he liked it or not. On one end, this seemed like what she deserved. But on the other hand, seeing her in pain made his chest feel weird. She was pacing the tiny room with her hands in her long, silky hair. Cole couldn’t help but wonder how soft it was, and her big brown eyes were wide in terror. He also noticed how her breaths had gotten shorter and heavier, but he knew it wasn’t because of his presence this time. She obviously didn't like tiny, cramped places. Cole had two choices. He could either relish in the sight of her in pain, knowing that it would be what she deserved for doing whatever the hell she did to him. Or, he could actually try to help her. Help her? He has never helped anyone b
Screw bad decisions. Screw regrets and everything bit of self-loathing she would feel after this moment. Because right now, all Syanna wanted was to feel more of Cole. She knew it was a bad idea from the start to sit beside him. She wasn’t sure if he was aware, but something in his eyes and his entire aura was seductive. They undoubtedly had a connection that she still couldn’t seem to understand, too. So, the moment he held her, she was done for. And now he had his nose buried in her neck, driving her crazy with just the bare hint of his breath fanning against her. It was warm, and by the second, it grew hotter as his fingers dug into her waist and his body drew closer to her. “What is it about you, Syanna?” Cole mumbled, but Syanna could tell it wasn’t a question to be answered. “From the minute I saw you yesterday, you have been doing something to me that no one has ever done before. No one.”“I’m sorry,” she found herself saying, completely forgetting that she was mad at him f
It’s been a week. An entire week had passed, and Cole had made it his duty to ignore Syanna at all costs. He would see her and snarl at her, but he wouldn’t say a single word to her. Syanna didn’t know why. On one hand, she assumed he was still upset about the entire ‘stuck in a witch’s library and almost kissing’ thing, not that it was any fault of hers. But deep down, Syanna knew he was avoiding her because of what she saw. It puzzled her. Because Cole didn’t seem like the type of person to be ashamed of his darkness. From what she’s gathered from Juliet, Cole was a devil in the body of a handsome phoenix. He never changed or hid from anyone. So, she had no idea why he would start now. Maybe she should’ve just left him alone. Perhaps that was best. But every time she closed her eyes, she would remember the feeling of his breath against her neck, and she’d ache for more. Gosh, how she wanted more of him. And she hated herself for it. She felt like a love-sick fool. This
It happened again. The second the vampires arrived, Cole’s eyes grew dark. And if it was even possible, they were darker than they were the first time it happened. Syanna jumped from her seated position as more and more vampires arrived at the border. It was about twenty against Cole and Isaac, and Syanna knew it was an unfair match. “Don’t,” Cole warned without looking at her, as if sensing that she was about to approach them. “Stay behind the border.” “But why?” a vampire asked through a snarl. His blood-red eyes watched Syanna as if she was the garnish on his plate. She knew he was the leader from his position and the way the others were arranged around him. “You’re not getting anywhere near her,” Cole growled, and the other vampires shrunk back as the grass beneath his feet shrivelled and turned black. Syanna gulped as she watched the encounter. She wanted to scream, run, and, most of all, cry. She wanted to cry because a group of vampires was ready to have her head,
In a minute when it felt like the world had utterly stopped spinning, Syanna didn’t know what to do besides scream. One moment she was trying to stop Cole from committing murder, and in the next, someone or something had grabbed her from behind. Isaac was the only one who saw it coming. He had been pushing against the barrier and growling at something behind her. But Syanna had been too consumed in Cole to notice, and Cole was too busy threatening the vampires. Either way, he wouldn’t be able to help. He was behind the barrier, and there was no way that Syanna could run back to the other side now. It was too late. The sun had started to dip beneath the hills, and the birds flew to their respective homes in flocks of blue and green. At least she’d go peacefully. At least she could watch the beauty of nature as this vampire--because she was sure that he was--would kill her. The minute it all became clear to Cole, his eyes widened, and he launched forward, but was stopped by the barr
Was this what death felt like? Was it supposed to be dazy, crippling and even painful? Syanna didn’t think so. But who was she to know what death felt like? She had never really died before, until now. There was mumbling in the background, and she shuffled in her spot, thinking it might be her parents. Were they waiting for her? Would she be at peace with them, knowing she lived a good 20 years, and that now Cole was free? Cole. Gosh, she remembered the look on his face when that vampire grabbed her. The look of utter pain and agony, and he didn’t even like her. She remembered how he pushed passed that barrier, trying to save her. What force was so greater than the headmistress’s barrier, that Cole, of all people, managed to break through solely to save her? It couldn’t be what she thought it was. It was too soon--far too soon. They barely even shared a proper conversation other than the night two years ago, and he didn’t even remember that moment. So it couldn’t be what she th
It had been six hours since Genevieve was still not back yet. But Cole wasn’t worried about her. No matter how long she was away, he knew she could take care of herself. So there really was no reason for him to worry about her. He knew she didn’t walk there this time. She must’ve taken a portal or something, so she shouldn’t have taken to long to return. But Cole tried not to let it bother him so much. He had to stay calm. Yet, he couldn’t help his nerved. Because if something happened to Genevieve, then that meant he might never get Syanna back. And, hell, the thought was scary. It that didn’t stop the feeling he had in his stomach every passing second. It was almost the same like what he felt the first time he realised that something bad would happen to Syanna, and to think that something else might happen when Genevieve wasn’t here made his stomach ache. There was no way he would’ve known what to do if something were to indeed happen. And if anything happened to Isaac or Sya
Cole was relieved Genevieve was back from the academy, although she won't talk about the demon attack on her last night. He tried to pry it out of her, but she remained tight-lipped. Cole couldn't blame her, though. His own experience with demons had taught him that sometimes, speaking about them could lead to even more trouble. While Genevieve locked herself away in her room, Cole headed out to find the demon that attacked her. He was determined to put an end to it before it harmed anyone else.As he roamed the streets, he kept his senses sharp. He could feel the demon's presence nearby, but it was elusive, flitting from shadow to shadow, never staying in one place for too long. It was like chasing a ghost. Finally, after hours of fruitless searching, Cole saw the demon. It was a hulking beast, towering over him, with skin as black as night and eyes that glowed like embers. Its wings were torn and ragged, and its claws glinted in the moonlight.Cole didn't hesitate. He drew his sword

Two hours had passed since Genevieve left, and Cole was begging to get antsy. He moved from his seat to the chair next to Syanna’s side of the bed, where he held her hand. He knew that her body was practically lifeless, and the real Syanna was inside of Isaac, but he couldn’t sit in front of Isaac and talk to her. It would just seem too weird. “Hey,” he whispered, caressing her cheek with his thumb. “I miss you, Syanna. But I’ll get you back, okay?” He kissed her forehead, and if he didn’t know better, he would’ve thought he saw Isaac’s lips twitch. Cole had to give it to the guy, he was a real friend. He didn’t think he wou
Part 2: The Vampire QueenRain. Gloomy weather had never mattered to Cole before. But now—somehow, he understood why it was always so dark, so cold and so sad. He started at the patch of dirt, hating how the soft patter of rain didn’t wash away the pain in his chest. Cole had no idea how it came to this… how he went from having the love of his life in his arms, to standing in the rain for an hour, staring at the ground. The open world didn’t feel as free as he had anticipated. Although he managed to leave Unici-him and Genevieve—the feeling of the wind in his hair and the bite of freedom on his ski didn’t feel like he had expected it to. Instead, it felt like bondage. It felt like pain, agony and everything in between, not having Syanna by his side. He and Genevieve left Unici two days ago before the headmistress caught onto them, taking Syanna and Isaac with them. Turns out, Genevieve knew of an old, abandoned house about five miles away from Unici. It seemed as if it had been
To say I was shocked was un understatement. I couldn't believe that all this time, so many people had been sent to kill my family. Including Anthony. I gulped and met his eyes, wondering if he somehow still wanted to complete that mission. But he simply continued the story, seeming completely out of it. “Yes,” Anthony confirmed. “But we had killed the wrong people. Your ancestors were smart—smart enough to stay in hiding well.” “But you had already murdered hundreds of people.” “It was about seventy people,” Anthony snapped, though the guilt in his face was evident. “Kids, elders… pregnant women.” “Oh my gosh.” Syanna couldn’t bear it. Dimitri ordered this sort of evil so he could save his own ass? “My mama was the first to fold. She wouldn’t do it a second time. My papa, feeling as though he always needed to protect us as the man of the family, begged her to try again. My sister ran away, and I followed her.” “So, what happened?” Anthony sighed. “I didn’t find my sister
This couldn’t be happening. It just couldn’t. There was no way Syanna was unconscious in Genevieve’s bed, with no sign of life. She wasn’t even breathing normally, and it took everything in Cole not to burn this damn academy to the ground once and for all. “Why isn’t she breathing?” Cole demanded as Genevieve stood in front of the bed where Syanna had been lying unconscious for the last two minutes since they arrived. “She was bitten, Cole.” “What does that mean?” Genevieve seemed on edge, as if, for the first time ever, she didn’t know what to do. And Cole didn’t like that. He sort of depended on Genevieve to always know everything and fix things. But now, she was looking at Syanna as if she had no idea what to do, and it terrified Cole. He paced Genevieve’s room, pulling at the root of his hair as if they were an abomination to him. “It means,” she said, sounding on edge. “That the vampire venom is killing her slowly.” “That doesn’t make any sense!” He threw his hands in the

She felt like she’d been there for hours, when I had only been about twenty minutes. Syanna couldn’t believe someone had kidnapped her in the middle of the school. Wasn’t Unici supposed to be safe? Wasn’t it supposed to be all rainbows and sunshine for all species here? But she guessed not. Because now, she was in someone’s old, abandoned cabin, with a vampire and a large, large class. Syanna knew before he even said anything what his plan had been, but she didn’t want to believe it. Mark assured her that none of the vampires would hurt her or try and drink her blood for power. But he was wrong, and she was wrong for believing him. Mark couldn’t speak for everyone, and it was her mistake for thinking so. So this was the big thing that Cole felt was going to happen, huh? A vampire was hoping to drain her dry and use her blood for power. “You don’t have to do this,” she said for the umpteenth time as the vampire, who’s name she had known as Anthony, stared at her from across the ro
