Dying would have been less painful. It had certainly been a consideration for the last two hours Cole had been walking along a long, wet road, soaked from head to toe from the drenching rain that woke him up in the middle of nowhere.
Cole had no idea where he was, who he was or where he was going. All he knew was his name, and that he woke up in the forest with the utmost worst headache in what must’ve been the history of headaches. It didn’t help that outside was pitch black either, after the sun had left him to nothing but the dim moonlight and his instincts. Cole considered staying in the forest until a mountain lion or wolf found him, hoping to put him out of his misery. But he willed himself to try and find civilisation—only heaven knows why.
Yet, after two hours of walking, Cole’s feet didn’t feel tired or worn. He wasn’t sure if he was supposed to feel relieved or terrified. Surely, that can’t be humanly possible, right?
Heaving out a breath, Cole waved at another car as its beaming lights approached him, hoping the driver would have pity on him. But like the other two cars, the driver only honked and sped past him.
Cole cursed under his breath, thinking that he should have stayed in that forest. But as if it was a sign from above, he spotted something—something other than trees and birds. With newfound strength and determination to go on, Cole’s feet moved even faster towards the building on the side of the street. He didn’t know how, but he could tell that there was a town nearby. The way the road widened and how the trees got considerably shorter proved it.
Still, he was mentally exhausted to consider walking further when he found a perfectly good building right here.
The bright, flashing sign read ‘Jake’s Diner’, and from what Cole could tell, it seemed warm and welcoming enough.
He pushed the door open, being met by a bell that made his ears ring. He winced, throwing his hand over his ears as the woman behind the register flashed her head in his direction.
Cole stood frozen, his hands slowly falling from his ears as the girl stared at him. He couldn’t bring himself to move forward or backwards. He couldn’t even find his voice to say hi. He had no memory of his life before, so perhaps this was normal. But he had sworn that neither in his past life or life to come has he seen a creature so exquisitely perfect.
Her big, brown eyes shone in worry as her pink, lush lips pouted. She ducked under the bar and rushed towards him, wrapping her tiny fingers around his arm as she pulled him inside.
“Oh my gosh, you’re soaked!” she exclaimed, leading him towards a comfy booth. Cole didn’t notice that she had been pulling his hand until he felt the soft, warm chair cushion under his bottom.
“The rain,” he simply said, shocked by his voice. He hadn’t spoken since he woke up, so he cleared his throat to smoothen his voice. “I got caught in it.”
She pulled her lips between her teeth as her eyes focused on him. Cole thought it was the most perfect sight in existence.
“We’re closed, but I’d happily make you a cup of coffee. You must be freezing, especially at this time of the year! Gosh, you might wake up with a cold tomorrow.”
“Actually,” Cole mumbled as he focused on his senses, “I’m not cold at all. That’s odd, isn’t it?”
Really odd, he thought to himself. He didn’t feel a temperature below average.
She smiled softly at him, resting the back of her hand against his forehead. “You poor thing. You might have a fever. You are a bit warm.”
But Cole knew it wasn’t a fever. He didn’t know how to explain it, so he stayed silent.
He watched her as she rushed behind the counter, where she set a cup of coffee to brew and grabbed a blanket from her bag. It was quite small, perhaps just big enough to wrap around her petite shoulders. Cole couldn’t help the smile on his face when he noticed the cartoon design on the blanket, also that it was quite worn and pretty old.
“Here you are. This will warm you up,” she said, resting the cup before him and wrapping the blanket around his shoulder before she sat across from him. Her plump cheeks reddened against her fair complexion when Cole smiled at the blanket.
“I’ve had it forever. I know it’s embarrassing, but it was raining this morning, and I couldn’t find my umbrella or my jacket, so I resorted to—”
“It’s cute,” Cole said, cutting off her rambling. She giggled, tucking a curly, dark lock of hair behind her ear before gesturing to the cup.
“Drink it before it gets cold.”
And that he did. Cole took small sips of the coffee—smaller than he knew was normal because he wanted this moment to last forever. Sitting across from her, watching her stare at him while he drank, caused his heart to pound. She would sometimes drop her gaze to her dark-painted nails, and Cole could’ve sworn he heard her heartbeat increasing each time.
The scent of her was tantalising. It was a mixture of fresh coffee and forest, perfectly enveloped in the smell of roses. Her scent was quite distinct too, but he knew it wasn’t cologne. It was as if he could smell her skin, hair, and even aura which was impossible. She drove him wild, and he had only known her for a few minutes.
“My name is Syanna, by the way,” she said as Cole rested the cup before him.
“That’s a beautiful name,” Cole said. “Mine is Cole.” He couldn’t help how her voice and the sound of her name caused his heart to pound. It was almost painful.
She smiled. “My uncle… well, he’s sort of my dad, but we aren’t related… he raised me, so I see him as a dad, but I’ve always called him uncle when I was younger. Sometimes I still do…” She blushed after noticing her rambling. “Well, he owns the place. He left me to close up.”
“Jake?” Cole questioned, hugging the blanket closer to him though he didn’t need its heat. But gosh, her scent—it was all over it.
Syanna cocked her head to the side. “How did you know?”
“The sign,” came his simple reply.
Syanna dropped her gaze again, pulling her lips between her teeth. “Right.”
“Hey, don’t be embarrassed.” Cole reached across the table to hold her hand but instantly yanked away at the jolt that ran through his body. It seemed like she felt it, too, because her eyes widened, and her back went rigid as she peered at his hand.
Cole tried to understand the logic. She touched him earlier, more than once, and nothing happened. But it was different when he touched her.
Cole reached out to touch her again, wanting to know more, but she pulled her hand away, shifting her gaze to anything but him.
“Well, you seem warm enough,” she said, forcing a smile as she jumped from the booth. “We’re closed after all, so I think you should get going.”
“Right,” Cole mumbled as he shuffled from the booth. “I really should.”
“Is your destination close to Quinn Town? I didn’t ask where you were coming from. You seemed lost.” Her brown eyes shone again, watching him in mere curiosity but still keeping her distance.
Cole smiled, not wanting to worry her head as he said, “Quinn Town. I think I found where I was going.”
Syanna nodded. “Great. The square is just about a five-minute walk from here. There’s a motel and a police station. Just in case you really are lost.”
Cole smiled. “Thank you, Syanna.”
Syanna shivered. The way her name rolled from his lips evidently affected her, and Cole could see it. Something else bothered her too, but Cole thought there’d be another day for him to ask. So, with a single wave in her direction, he left, wincing as the bell at the door rang again.
He stepped into the fresh air with a smile, still wrapping her blanket around his shoulders as he headed toward the town square. Something happened between them. He could tell. And though her attitude towards him changed when he touched her, Cole decided to give his mind rest, hoping she was probably just as nervous as he was.
“Cole?” A female’s voice said from behind him. Cole’s strides paused as a smile grew on his lips, thinking it was Syanna. He didn’t question it until…
Until he realised this wasn't Syanna's voice.
He stiffened, suddenly growing defensive and rigid as he spun around. A girl around his and Syanna’s age stood before him, dressed in a black coat that covered everything but her ankles. Two men stood beside her, looking equally serious and rigid. He growled, taking himself by surprise at the sound from his chest and the sudden heat that grew in his veins.
“Who are you?” he demanded, his strength now unexplainable as he took a daring step towards them. But the girl, with a slight smile, simply held her hand towards him.
“Purdeu isa monshinka,” she mumbled, and Cole’s feet betrayed him by turning to jelly. His eyes widened as he stared at the girl, who stalked towards him with a smile on her face.
“You are a hard demon to find, Cole. Do you know that?” she mumbled, confusing and shocking Cole even more.
And then, with the snap of her fingers, everything went dark.
*Two Years Later* Five minutes. He had five minutes to get to the East Gate, and he’ll bid the godforsaken academy goodbye. For two years, Cole had been stuck here. For two years, he had wanted nothing but to get the hell out. And finally, after months of trying, he would be free. The witch, Genevieve, was a hard shell to crack. She was the one who brought him here, and Cole was sure to make her life a living hell because of it. But, a year ago, she promised that if he could leave her alone for twelve months, she'd arrange for him to go. Of course, it hasn’t been easy. Cole was called the Prince of Darkness for a reason. Everyone here feared him, or at least respected him, even the headmistress. So, going all this time without poking fun at Genevieve was hard, but hell, it was worth it. He rechecked his watch, which showed him that he had four minutes to go. He could make it. He had to. Unici Academy for Supernaturals wasn’t awful, but it wasn’t the place for Cole. He wa
He didn’t remember her. She stared him dead in the eyes, and Syanna was certain he didn’t know who the hell she was. But how could he not? How could the man she had seen in her dreams for the past two years and thought about every passing second not know who she was? It was bad enough that she was here at a school for supernaturals when she was the only human. But could she really exist with him on the same campus, knowing they knew each other, but he obviously didn’t? Gosh. This was a nightmare. “Just look on the bright side,” Juliet, Syanna’s roommate and only friend, said. “What’s that?” she mumbled, picking at her doughnut. “He’s a jerk, anyway. You dodged a bullet.” Syanna gasped. Coming from anyone else, this would’ve seemed logical and normal. But Juliet was a Cupid—one of three in the entire academy. In the short two weeks that Syanna had known her, Juliet had never said anything bad about anyone or anything. It was just in Juliet’s nature to be friendly and, well
Syanna should’ve heeded Juliet’s advice. She shouldn’t have looked back. Because when she did, she wanted to run. No, forget that. She wanted to evaporate into thin air. The look on Cole’s face as he stormed toward them was nothing but wrath, and he was staring directly at her. What the hell did she do? Only ten minutes ago, he was staring at her with a blank expression as if he didn’t even know her! And now… now he was looking at her as if he wanted to kill her—as if she was the very bane of his existence, and he would do anything to wipe her from the face of this earth. The worst part? Syanna had no idea why. The flowers along the ground shrivelled and died as he got closer, and Syanna’s grip on Juliet’s hand grew impossibly tighter. What would he do to her? What COULD he do to her here at Unici? It was then that Syanna realised he couldn't possibly hurt her right here in front of everyone in the middle of the first day of school. And so, she decided that she wasn’t
The bad thing about being a human in a school full of supernaturals was that one would be considered a ‘Unique.’ As Syanna had gathered from Juliet, the Uniques were the rare supernaturals in the academy. In this particular class, the supernaturals who weren’t common studied together. It was a cool group, with an actual banshee and gargoyle. Syanna didn’t even know those things existed. The class consisted of about twenty people, with two or three creatures alike, and of course, the human, Syanna. The good thing was Juliet was also in this class. The bad thing was, so was Cole. And right now, he was perched on a girl’s desk, and Syanna’s chest had been squeezing since the second he started talking to her. The girl seemed utterly annoyed by his presence, but the way he smirked at her proved that they knew each other quite well, even if that wasn’t in a good way. The girl's eyes were blue and diamond-like—like most of the high witches in the school—and her hair was jet black,
Cole didn’t plan for this to happen. He didn’t get up this morning and decide that he’d push on a stupid brick and get him and Syanna stuck in a witch’s secret library. Yet, he couldn’t deny the fact that he liked it. She looked terrified, that was for sure. And Cole didn’t know if he liked it or not. On one end, this seemed like what she deserved. But on the other hand, seeing her in pain made his chest feel weird. She was pacing the tiny room with her hands in her long, silky hair. Cole couldn’t help but wonder how soft it was, and her big brown eyes were wide in terror. He also noticed how her breaths had gotten shorter and heavier, but he knew it wasn’t because of his presence this time. She obviously didn't like tiny, cramped places. Cole had two choices. He could either relish in the sight of her in pain, knowing that it would be what she deserved for doing whatever the hell she did to him. Or, he could actually try to help her. Help her? He has never helped anyone b
Screw bad decisions. Screw regrets and everything bit of self-loathing she would feel after this moment. Because right now, all Syanna wanted was to feel more of Cole. She knew it was a bad idea from the start to sit beside him. She wasn’t sure if he was aware, but something in his eyes and his entire aura was seductive. They undoubtedly had a connection that she still couldn’t seem to understand, too. So, the moment he held her, she was done for. And now he had his nose buried in her neck, driving her crazy with just the bare hint of his breath fanning against her. It was warm, and by the second, it grew hotter as his fingers dug into her waist and his body drew closer to her. “What is it about you, Syanna?” Cole mumbled, but Syanna could tell it wasn’t a question to be answered. “From the minute I saw you yesterday, you have been doing something to me that no one has ever done before. No one.”“I’m sorry,” she found herself saying, completely forgetting that she was mad at him f
It’s been a week. An entire week had passed, and Cole had made it his duty to ignore Syanna at all costs. He would see her and snarl at her, but he wouldn’t say a single word to her. Syanna didn’t know why. On one hand, she assumed he was still upset about the entire ‘stuck in a witch’s library and almost kissing’ thing, not that it was any fault of hers. But deep down, Syanna knew he was avoiding her because of what she saw. It puzzled her. Because Cole didn’t seem like the type of person to be ashamed of his darkness. From what she’s gathered from Juliet, Cole was a devil in the body of a handsome phoenix. He never changed or hid from anyone. So, she had no idea why he would start now. Maybe she should’ve just left him alone. Perhaps that was best. But every time she closed her eyes, she would remember the feeling of his breath against her neck, and she’d ache for more. Gosh, how she wanted more of him. And she hated herself for it. She felt like a love-sick fool. This
It happened again. The second the vampires arrived, Cole’s eyes grew dark. And if it was even possible, they were darker than they were the first time it happened. Syanna jumped from her seated position as more and more vampires arrived at the border. It was about twenty against Cole and Isaac, and Syanna knew it was an unfair match. “Don’t,” Cole warned without looking at her, as if sensing that she was about to approach them. “Stay behind the border.” “But why?” a vampire asked through a snarl. His blood-red eyes watched Syanna as if she was the garnish on his plate. She knew he was the leader from his position and the way the others were arranged around him. “You’re not getting anywhere near her,” Cole growled, and the other vampires shrunk back as the grass beneath his feet shrivelled and turned black. Syanna gulped as she watched the encounter. She wanted to scream, run, and, most of all, cry. She wanted to cry because a group of vampires was ready to have her head,
It had been six hours since Genevieve was still not back yet. But Cole wasn’t worried about her. No matter how long she was away, he knew she could take care of herself. So there really was no reason for him to worry about her. He knew she didn’t walk there this time. She must’ve taken a portal or something, so she shouldn’t have taken to long to return. But Cole tried not to let it bother him so much. He had to stay calm. Yet, he couldn’t help his nerved. Because if something happened to Genevieve, then that meant he might never get Syanna back. And, hell, the thought was scary. It that didn’t stop the feeling he had in his stomach every passing second. It was almost the same like what he felt the first time he realised that something bad would happen to Syanna, and to think that something else might happen when Genevieve wasn’t here made his stomach ache. There was no way he would’ve known what to do if something were to indeed happen. And if anything happened to Isaac or Sya
Cole was relieved Genevieve was back from the academy, although she won't talk about the demon attack on her last night. He tried to pry it out of her, but she remained tight-lipped. Cole couldn't blame her, though. His own experience with demons had taught him that sometimes, speaking about them could lead to even more trouble. While Genevieve locked herself away in her room, Cole headed out to find the demon that attacked her. He was determined to put an end to it before it harmed anyone else.As he roamed the streets, he kept his senses sharp. He could feel the demon's presence nearby, but it was elusive, flitting from shadow to shadow, never staying in one place for too long. It was like chasing a ghost. Finally, after hours of fruitless searching, Cole saw the demon. It was a hulking beast, towering over him, with skin as black as night and eyes that glowed like embers. Its wings were torn and ragged, and its claws glinted in the moonlight.Cole didn't hesitate. He drew his sword

Two hours had passed since Genevieve left, and Cole was begging to get antsy. He knew she didn’t walk there this time. Because if something happened to Genevieve, then that meant he might never get Syanna back. And, hell, the thought was scary. He moved from his seat to the chair next to Syanna’s side of the bed, where he held her hand. He knew that her body was practically lifeless, and the real Syanna was inside of Isaac, but he couldn’t sit in front of Isaac and talk to her. It would just seem too weird. “Hey,” he whispered, caressing her cheek with his thumb. “I miss you, Syanna. But I’ll get you back, okay?” He kissed her forehead, and if he didn’t know better, he would’ve thought he saw Isaac’s lips twitch. Cole had to give it to the guy, he was a real friend. He didn’t think he wou
Part 2: The Vampire QueenRain. Gloomy weather had never mattered to Cole before. But now—somehow, he understood why it was always so dark, so cold and so sad. He started at the patch of dirt, hating how the soft patter of rain didn’t wash away the pain in his chest. Cole had no idea how it came to this… how he went from having the love of his life in his arms, to standing in the rain for an hour, staring at the ground. The open world didn’t feel as free as he had anticipated. Although he managed to leave Unici-him and Genevieve—the feeling of the wind in his hair and the bite of freedom on his ski didn’t feel like he had expected it to. Instead, it felt like bondage. It felt like pain, agony and everything in between, not having Syanna by his side. He and Genevieve left Unici two days ago before the headmistress caught onto them, taking Syanna and Isaac with them. Turns out, Genevieve knew of an old, abandoned house about five miles away from Unici. It seemed as if it had been
To say I was shocked was un understatement. I couldn't believe that all this time, so many people had been sent to kill my family. Including Anthony. I gulped and met his eyes, wondering if he somehow still wanted to complete that mission. But he simply continued the story, seeming completely out of it. “Yes,” Anthony confirmed. “But we had killed the wrong people. Your ancestors were smart—smart enough to stay in hiding well.” “But you had already murdered hundreds of people.” “It was about seventy people,” Anthony snapped, though the guilt in his face was evident. “Kids, elders… pregnant women.” “Oh my gosh.” Syanna couldn’t bear it. Dimitri ordered this sort of evil so he could save his own ass? “My mama was the first to fold. She wouldn’t do it a second time. My papa, feeling as though he always needed to protect us as the man of the family, begged her to try again. My sister ran away, and I followed her.” “So, what happened?” Anthony sighed. “I didn’t find my sister
This couldn’t be happening. It just couldn’t. There was no way Syanna was unconscious in Genevieve’s bed, with no sign of life. She wasn’t even breathing normally, and it took everything in Cole not to burn this damn academy to the ground once and for all. “Why isn’t she breathing?” Cole demanded as Genevieve stood in front of the bed where Syanna had been lying unconscious for the last two minutes since they arrived. “She was bitten, Cole.” “What does that mean?” Genevieve seemed on edge, as if, for the first time ever, she didn’t know what to do. And Cole didn’t like that. He sort of depended on Genevieve to always know everything and fix things. But now, she was looking at Syanna as if she had no idea what to do, and it terrified Cole. He paced Genevieve’s room, pulling at the root of his hair as if they were an abomination to him. “It means,” she said, sounding on edge. “That the vampire venom is killing her slowly.” “That doesn’t make any sense!” He threw his hands in the

She felt like she’d been there for hours, when I had only been about twenty minutes. Syanna couldn’t believe someone had kidnapped her in the middle of the school. Wasn’t Unici supposed to be safe? Wasn’t it supposed to be all rainbows and sunshine for all species here? But she guessed not. Because now, she was in someone’s old, abandoned cabin, with a vampire and a large, large class. Syanna knew before he even said anything what his plan had been, but she didn’t want to believe it. Mark assured her that none of the vampires would hurt her or try and drink her blood for power. But he was wrong, and she was wrong for believing him. Mark couldn’t speak for everyone, and it was her mistake for thinking so. So this was the big thing that Cole felt was going to happen, huh? A vampire was hoping to drain her dry and use her blood for power. “You don’t have to do this,” she said for the umpteenth time as the vampire, who’s name she had known as Anthony, stared at her from across the ro
