The two of them did end up going back into the party separately but that didn’t stop the manager from catching on. He reached out to Edward a few days later about having dinner with his client to try and nail him for a sponsorship. He had no intention of sponsoring Angel but did want to see her again so he agreed.
When she met up with him, the first thing she did was raise an eyebrow at him and speak wryly. “Edward Todd, huh? My manager says you’re a pretty big deal.”
He shrugged. “Doesn’t prevent me from getting taken advantage of. In fact, it’s the primary reason people do. By all means, don’t get all formal with me now. You’re the only person who has ever called me Eddie and I kind of like it.”
Angel relaxed slightly at his words. “Fair enough. I’m the one that got all informal on you last time anyway. Sorry about that…I’d never had alcohol before and my tolerance is low. Guess that’s another reason to stay away from it. I didn’t do anything too weird, did I?”
“Aside from asking a complete stranger to be your pillow while you took a nap? No. But I didn’t mind. I was actually flattered that you trusted me so much right off the bat.”
Her expression grew sheepish. “Yeah…sorry about that too. Listen, I don’t expect any money out of you so why don’t we just enjoy dinner to get my manager off our backs? We can go our merry ways afterward and forget how much I embarrassed myself in front of you last time.”
Edward didn’t want to do that but agreed so he wouldn’t make her uncomfortable. He appreciated her straightforwardness, if nothing else. It was unlike everyone else he knew. Drunk or sober, she held to the same principles and that was definitely a good thing.
Dinner was the most pleasant experience he’d had in longer than he could remember. So he kept making excuses to see her again by stringing the manager along. Angel got a good laugh out of that and didn’t complain because she also got to eat better food than she usually did.
They had dinner together nearly every night for two weeks and he learned more about her, such as how her mother actually died and the fact that she was already signed up for online college courses in the fall that could work around her pageant schedule. Her goal was to get her biology degree online in preparation for medical school once she made her way up to the top pageant in the country.
She was beautiful, witty, and their shared experiences made him feel like he wasn’t alone for the first time in his life. He was head over heels in no time and that was where things went wrong.
The manager wasn’t happy with how slowly things were progressing on the sponsorship front and delivered Angel to him one night doped up with an aphrodisiac drug to seal the deal, thinking nothing career ruining would happen because she was on birth control. Edward misread the signals based on their time together and thought she genuinely wanted to spend the night with him.
The next morning, Angel was horrified and ran out on him without giving him a chance to explain that she came on to him first. He was confused and miserable but after realizing what happened, he wasn’t about to give that horrible manager what he wanted in terms of a sponsorship.
At this point, he would gladly sponsor her if she asked him personally but that manager had to go. He had abused her limited trust in him horribly.
About a month later, the manager dragged her back to see him—the first contact they’d had since that night—and explained that she was pregnant. She couldn’t keep the child but to compensate her for the trauma of having to abort it, he demanded sponsorship money or they would sue.
Angel wouldn’t even look Edward in the eye. She looked like all of her hopes and dreams had been crushed, which stabbed him right through the heart. He needed to fix this.
“Get out,” he said furiously to the manager. “Don’t you dare act like you care about her when you did this in the first place. We will discuss this but not with you present. Leave before I call the cops to escort you off my property.”
The manager’s smug expression was wiped right off of his face but he left as Edward said. Once they were alone, he desperately tried to appeal to the woman sitting in front of him. He didn’t want her to lose her dreams but also didn’t want her to abort their child.
She had been the first person to accept him for who he was rather than his wealth or status. She hadn’t wanted anything from him but a listening ear that he was happy to provide. He loved listening to her talk.
If Angel would let him…he would make things right. He would marry her and pay for her medical school himself. He told her so too. He would provide for her and the child for the rest of their lives.
She looked up at him with dead eyes. “Then what, Eddie? Everything my mother put me through was for nothing? I’ve come this far to lose my chance right before I make it to the big league? Married women or women with children can’t compete.”
“Then we’ll wait!” Edward blurted. He hated seeing that look on her face. “My offer doesn’t have to happen now. The next major pageant you need to compete in shouldn’t be until after the baby is born anyway, right?
“I’ll sponsor you. You can take that time to prepare in any way you need to. I’ll swear everyone involved in the birthing process to secrecy and we won’t get married until after you make it to the Miss Americana pageant, win or lose.
“I’ll make sure our baby wants for nothing and support your dream of being a doctor no matter what. Just don’t do this. I don’t have anybody in this world except for the two of you so please don’t take that away from me.”
His begging made her agree and he did his best over the next few years to take care of everything Angel could possibly need. She was very well taken care of physically but there was nothing he could do about her depression. She was little more than a shell the entire pregnancy.
As soon as Aria was born, she fell in love with her so that helped a little but there was still always a wall between them. Her warmest smile was reserved for their daughter alone.
Edward didn’t care about that as long as he still got to see it. Angel might be busy with all of her pageants and insisted on separate rooms but she was undeniably a part of his life. They had a contract; she couldn’t back out on marrying him in exchange for his financial assistance.
He did his best to show her that he cared but no matter what he did, it wasn’t enough. Her losing her memories of all the pain he unintentionally caused her might be a blessing in disguise. Even thinking that way made him feel like a horrible person though.
She had already lost her freedom; losing her memories too was horribly unfair. Especially if it ended up benefiting the man she resented. But that didn’t change the fact that he wanted to make things up to her and see if their relationship could change for the better.
Angel noticed that Eddie was particularly solicitous of her after they went to the beach. He brought her food she liked before the accident and spent whatever time he wasn’t in the office by her side with Aria. She still hadn’t managed to figure out what she had been doing on the beach after straining her memory. She had the feeling she needed to go back to know for sure. But she couldn’t get out of bed. Whatever medication she was on now for her epilepsy made her feel off. She tried getting up to go to the bathroom once and ended up having a seizure, which totally freaked out poor Aria who had been sitting on the bed watching Disney movies with her.Everything felt off. Her glasses prescription. Her medication. Her so-called family. How could that be when she was obviously Angelina Dawson?“I want to go to the beach again,” Angel said firmly when Eddie got home on her third day of being at his house. He frowned. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? Lily couldn’t believe this. It sounded like something straight out of a soap opera. She had a long-lost identical twin! A long-lost identical twin with a seriously complicated life. How could she have the same DNA as a pageant queen with a secret daughter and lover?“Look, I’m sure this is a great shock to you but can I please have the phone now?” she begged. “You did promise.”Eddie handed it over without a word, still looking like the sky was falling. Well, he had just found out the woman he loved was still missing. That was kind of a big deal. She felt sorry for him but not sorry enough to keep dawdling while her loved ones panicked. She dialed the familiar number by heart and her mother picked up on the second ring with a frantic voice. “Hello? Do you have information about my Lily?”Her heart twisted. They had been looking for her. They probably put up missing posters and everything. “It’s me, Mom. I’m okay. I got a concussion and lost my memory for a few days but the people that
Mark was hesitant to answer. After all these years, he was finally talking to Lily Bennett and she wanted to know about her absentee identical twin!He didn’t think much of her, to be perfectly honest. Finding out she was the busy and semi-famous Angelina Dawson had changed his impression slightly but before that, he thought of her as a deadbeat mother who didn’t reciprocate the love his boss had for her.“I don’t have much of an impression of her. She’s hardly around when I am and if I do see her, she’s usually coming and going. Sometimes I see her with Aria. I’ve worked for Mr. Todd since she was an infant and I’ve never really interacted with her in all that time.“I didn’t know she was Miss California until you were in the hospital…but I’d have to guess that her busy schedule is related to the pageants themselves and all of the community service that comes with whatever title she’s currently holding.”Mark didn’t know much about pageants but knew they had different levels from tal

That might increase your chances of success.”An excellent idea. Edward retained his wits even though he was obviously worried sick about Angel. He would do everything in his power to get her back and in the meantime Mark would take care of the rest.He desperately hoped Lily would agree. Everyone always told Lily Bennett not to go check out the tide pools by herself. Her professors did. Her overprotective family members did. Her friends did. But she hated being held back by her illness so that particular day she threw caution to the wind.Being a highly independent person was difficult when you had epilepsy. For about a year and a half, her seizures had been too active so her driver’s license was suspended until she did a whole lot of paperwork and proved her doctor said she was okay to drive again. That had been awful. She only got it back six months ago.But there hadn’t been a single seizure since then. Her medication kept things stable. That was why she felt confident enough to go out to the tide pools alone today. The people in her life were concerned that if Lily ever went to the beach by herself and had a seizure she might drown. She was a marine biology student! Sometimes she had to go to the beach when she couldn’t get anyone to go with her.Assigning a repor
They had shared a P.E. class when Lily was a freshman and Mark was a senior. During the gymnastics unit she did a cartwheel and her glasses slid right off her face. They were the kind of thick black frames commonly referred to as ‘hipster glasses.’A lot of the boys catcalled her. One was particularly brave (or was it stupid?) and called out to her directly. “What are you hiding behind those clunkers for? You look better without your glasses!”Lily, who had put her glasses back on by then, took them off and squinted at him before delivering a scorching burn. “What do you know? You look better without my glasses too.”Everyone in the class went “ooooh” and the boy that dared mess with her turned beet red and tried to explain himself. “I didn’t mean anything weird by it!”She raised an eyebrow. “Oh? I think you did. I think you believe in the outdated notion than women have to conform to men’s beauty standards to get by in this world. Let me tell you something; I can’t wear contacts bec
Her head was fuzzy but she could feel someone holding her hand and hear someone trying to talk to her. Where was she? What happened? She couldn’t remember anything.Opening her eyes took tremendous effort and a very handsome, very blurry man appeared in front of her. She squinted trying to get a better look. He had chiseled features and dark hair with hazel eyes that were filled with worry despite his blank expression.“Angel? Are you alright?” the man asked in as casual a manner as possible considering he was gripping her hand rather tightly.“Who…who are you?” she asked. His face fell. “You’re messing with me, right? This isn’t funny. You know me…you have to know me. I’m Eddie, though you’re the only one that has ever called me that. Your fiancé.”Her fiancé? She had a fiancé? So he knew who she was then, right. “If you’re my fiancé then who am I? What happened to me?”“You’re scaring me. You’re Angel—Angelina Dawson. How hard did you hit your head? Angelina unsteadily hopped off the railing and leaned against it to look back up at him. He was half a foot taller than her. “Nobody’s ever asked me that before, let alone someone I just met. No one cares about a pageant girl’s motivations.“But I’ll tell you for the heck of it. I want to be a neurologist and help people like me. I have epilepsy. You know, the seizure disorder? Edward Todd was getting more and more confused. The DNA report that he got Dr. Anderson to put a rush on had been emailed over to him and the evidence was conclusive. The amnesiac currently on Angel’s bed shared 50% of Aria’s DNA. Only he and her mother were capable of showing such a result on this kind of test. Yet he remained uneasy. The amnesia was bad enough but acting like a completely different person when confronted with the ocean was even worse. With amnesia alone, she would come back to him eventually. All it would take was patience and constant reminders of the familiar. But if her personality had changed, he was dealing with a wild card.A terrible part of him wondered if he could take advantage of her amnesia and personality changes to improve their relationship. He knew Angel didn’t love him. He had ruined her life, after all, even if it was an accident. They met when he was twenty-six and disillusioned about the world. “You’re wrong,” Angel said firmly. “I’m not afraid of the ocean.”Hearing the ocean mentioned brought something back to her. Longing. Familiarity. She had the thought that it was only natural they found her on a beach because she spent a lot of time there. But how would she know that when she couldn’t remember anything else? Her confusion grew worse despite the clarity of that one piece of information. The ocean was important to her.Eddie frowned. “Angel…you’re confused. The whole time we’ve been together, you haven’t stepped foot on a beach. You said it brought back bad memories. You won’t go on boats either, even if there are dinner parties on them that you need to attend for your career.”“You’re wrong!” she insisted. “I love the ocean. I was doing something at the beach…I know I was. Something important.”The doctor looked back and forth between the two of them before addressing Angel. “What were you doing that was so important? Do you remember?”She strained trying to think of i
