Angel noticed that Eddie was particularly solicitous of her after they went to the beach. He brought her food she liked before the accident and spent whatever time he wasn’t in the office by her side with Aria.
She still hadn’t managed to figure out what she had been doing on the beach after straining her memory. She had the feeling she needed to go back to know for sure.
But she couldn’t get out of bed. Whatever medication she was on now for her epilepsy made her feel off. She tried getting up to go to the bathroom once and ended up having a seizure, which totally freaked out poor Aria who had been sitting on the bed watching Disney movies with her.
Everything felt off. Her glasses prescription. Her medication. Her so-called family. How could that be when she was obviously Angelina Dawson?
“I want to go to the beach again,” Angel said firmly when Eddie got home on her third day of being at his house.
He frowned. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? What if something happens to you? You could hit your head and drown.”
Those words were hauntingly familiar. She was fairly certain she had heard them many times before. A memory flashed through her mind of a middle-aged woman telling her the exact same thing as she prepared breakfast with children of various ages swarming around her.
Don’t go to the beach alone. Don’t go to the beach alone. Don’t go to the beach alone. The words swirled around endlessly in her head until she finally remembered something and shot straight up, causing a wave of vertigo to come over her.
“The tide pools! My paper! What happened to my backpack?!” she cried.
Angel didn’t remember everything but did remember that she wasn’t supposed to go to the tide pools alone because of her epilepsy and had gone anyway. That was what resulted in her getting washed up on the beach with her memory gone.
She was fairly certain she wasn’t Angelina Dawson now…but who was she? She couldn’t remember anything but her most recent memory before hitting her head.
Edward stared at her blankly. “What are you trying to say? What paper? Why were you at the tide pools? Is that how you got hurt?”
“Yes! I’m a marine biology student; I had to do an observation report and nobody could go with me so I had to go alone and I got swept away by a rip current after wading into the water and hit my head,” she babbled.
Talking about it made everything come flooding back so swiftly it made her head hurt. She knew exactly who she was. And she was so screwed. Spring Break was nearly over and she hadn’t written her paper or done any of her other homework yet.
Forget that, what about her parents? They were probably freaking out right now since she had been gone for days!
“I have to go home! I’m sorry but I’m not your fiancée. It just came back to me. My name is Lily Bennett. Can I borrow your phone? I need to call my mom. My parents must be really worried right now,” she said frantically.
Eddie didn’t seem to believe her. “That’s impossible.”
“What?”
“You have to be Angel. I…I ran your DNA against Aria’s because I wasn’t sure and you were a fifty percent genetic match. That wouldn’t be possible unless you were her mother.”
Lily was completely baffled. How did that happen? She had never given birth before. She hadn’t even had her first kiss because guys thought she was too much of a tomboy and were never interested in her.
“The test must be wrong. I’m not anybody’s mother. I only met you for the first time a few days ago in the hospital. I can prove it if you just let me borrow your phone. Please, my family has to be worried sick.”
Eddie did pull out his phone but didn’t hand it to her. He sent a text message before looking up at her with a piercing glare. “I need to confirm something first. If you are who you say you are, I’ll give you my phone.”
Confirm what? What could he possibly confirm? It wasn’t like he knew anyone that could verify her identity.
Or so she thought. Twenty minutes later, that assistant guy from before came rushing into the room. She had completely forgotten about him but he had looked familiar. Still did though she couldn’t place where she knew him from.
Eddie gestured toward her impatiently and demanded, “Who is this?”
The assistant looked incredibly confused. “...are you referring to Angel?”
“Say she wasn’t Angel. Who is the first person you think of that she could be aside from her?”
“Is this some kind of trick question, sir?”
“Just answer it!” Eddie demanded, his eyes flashing angrily.
“Okay! When I first met your wife, I thought she was someone I knew in high school because the resemblance was uncanny. If Angel wasn’t Angel, I would have to say she’s Lily Bennett. But why…” the assistant faltered. “Lily? Is that really you?”
Lily was so relieved her identity had been verified that she nearly jumped up and hugged him. Except she couldn’t do that because she was too weak from taking the wrong medication.
“Yes! I’m Lily! I knew you looked familiar; did we share a class or something? Never mind that; you know who I am so please let me go home!”
Eddie looked like the ground had been pulled out from beneath him. “But that doesn’t make sense! The DNA match can’t be wrong. And you look exactly like her. The only way that could be possible was if you were identical twins.”
Lily blinked at him. She hadn’t considered that. The way she knew it, her biological parents had abandoned her—likely due to her frequent seizures as a toddler—and she got picked up by social services before ending up with her family.
Over the years, she had wondered if she had biological siblings out there somewhere a few times but never would have imagined something as fantastical as an identical twin. “Is Angel adopted? Because I am.”
“I…she never said. If she was, I don’t think her mother ever told her that. And I’ve seen pictures; they’re both blonde so I never would have guessed,” Eddie admitted faintly.
Lily couldn’t believe this. It sounded like something straight out of a soap opera. She had a long-lost identical twin! A long-lost identical twin with a seriously complicated life. How could she have the same DNA as a pageant queen with a secret daughter and lover?“Look, I’m sure this is a great shock to you but can I please have the phone now?” she begged. “You did promise.”Eddie handed it over without a word, still looking like the sky was falling. Well, he had just found out the woman he loved was still missing. That was kind of a big deal. She felt sorry for him but not sorry enough to keep dawdling while her loved ones panicked. She dialed the familiar number by heart and her mother picked up on the second ring with a frantic voice. “Hello? Do you have information about my Lily?”Her heart twisted. They had been looking for her. They probably put up missing posters and everything. “It’s me, Mom. I’m okay. I got a concussion and lost my memory for a few days but the people that
Mark was hesitant to answer. After all these years, he was finally talking to Lily Bennett and she wanted to know about her absentee identical twin!He didn’t think much of her, to be perfectly honest. Finding out she was the busy and semi-famous Angelina Dawson had changed his impression slightly but before that, he thought of her as a deadbeat mother who didn’t reciprocate the love his boss had for her.“I don’t have much of an impression of her. She’s hardly around when I am and if I do see her, she’s usually coming and going. Sometimes I see her with Aria. I’ve worked for Mr. Todd since she was an infant and I’ve never really interacted with her in all that time.“I didn’t know she was Miss California until you were in the hospital…but I’d have to guess that her busy schedule is related to the pageants themselves and all of the community service that comes with whatever title she’s currently holding.”Mark didn’t know much about pageants but knew they had different levels from tal
Mark didn’t find her fourteen-year-old antics embarrassing at all. In his eyes, Lily had been a defender of justice. She didn’t go around picking fights for no reason. But he didn’t get the chance to say any more because they had arrived in front of her house. I thought you said they were taking good care of you?” she demanded.“Mom, they thought I was someone else, remember? I was taking her medication and it kind of threw me off. I’m really fine but I have so much homework to do so please don’t yell at me too much.”Her mother rolled her eyes. “You’re ge
Edward frowned. “Do you even have her contact information?”“No but I dropped her off at her house and happen to remember exactly where it is. We can find her no problem,” Mark said confidently. “Are you willing to try, sir? I can’t think of any other possible solution while we locate Mrs. Todd.”“At least wait a few days until she’s had time to catch up on her homework. That might increase your chances of success.”An excellent idea. Edward retained his wits even though he was obviously worried sick about Angel. He would do everything in his power to get her back and in the meantime Mark would take care of the rest.He desperately hoped Lily would agree. Based on the type of person she had been seven years ago, she would inconvenience herself to help others but this might be too big of a favor even for her.Whether or not she would help them wasn’t even his biggest question right now. Everyone always told Lily Bennett not to go check out the tide pools by herself. Her professors did. Her overprotective family members did. Her friends did. But she hated being held back by her illness so that particular day she threw caution to the wind.Being a highly independent person was difficult when you had epilepsy. For about a year and a half, her seizures had been too active so her driver’s license was suspended until she did a whole lot of paperwork and proved her doctor said she was okay to drive again. That had been awful. She only got it back six months ago.But there hadn’t been a single seizure since then. Her medication kept things stable. That was why she felt confident enough to go out to the tide pools alone today. The people in her life were concerned that if Lily ever went to the beach by herself and had a seizure she might drown. She was a marine biology student! Sometimes she had to go to the beach when she couldn’t get anyone to go with her.Assigning a repor
They had shared a P.E. class when Lily was a freshman and Mark was a senior. During the gymnastics unit she did a cartwheel and her glasses slid right off her face. They were the kind of thick black frames commonly referred to as ‘hipster glasses.’A lot of the boys catcalled her. One was particularly brave (or was it stupid?) and called out to her directly. “What are you hiding behind those clunkers for? You look better without your glasses!”Lily, who had put her glasses back on by then, took them off and squinted at him before delivering a scorching burn. “What do you know? You look better without my glasses too.”Everyone in the class went “ooooh” and the boy that dared mess with her turned beet red and tried to explain himself. “I didn’t mean anything weird by it!”She raised an eyebrow. “Oh? I think you did. I think you believe in the outdated notion than women have to conform to men’s beauty standards to get by in this world. Let me tell you something; I can’t wear contacts bec
Her head was fuzzy but she could feel someone holding her hand and hear someone trying to talk to her. Where was she? What happened? She couldn’t remember anything.Opening her eyes took tremendous effort and a very handsome, very blurry man appeared in front of her. She squinted trying to get a better look. He had chiseled features and dark hair with hazel eyes that were filled with worry despite his blank expression.“Angel? Are you alright?” the man asked in as casual a manner as possible considering he was gripping her hand rather tightly.“Who…who are you?” she asked. His face fell. “You’re messing with me, right? This isn’t funny. You know me…you have to know me. I’m Eddie, though you’re the only one that has ever called me that. Your fiancé.”Her fiancé? She had a fiancé? So he knew who she was then, right. “If you’re my fiancé then who am I? What happened to me?”“You’re scaring me. You’re Angel—Angelina Dawson. How hard did you hit your head? They found you at the beach; what
Nothing Eddie said was ringing any bells aside from having epilepsy. Somehow that seemed familiar to Angel.Still, she listened to him intently for hours in a state of disbelief but eventually he had to leave. “I need to go check in on Aria. I’ll be back first thing in the morning to take you home. Is there anything you want me to bring you?”Angel couldn’t think of anything. Her vision was blurry but she didn’t realize that was already a problem before she hit her head. She thought it was the result of her injury. So she sent him off to take care of their daughter.Eddie hesitated a moment before giving her a short but tender kiss on the forehead, scurrying away before she could say anything in response. She frowned at his retreating back. Isn’t kissing normal between fiancés? What sort of relationship did they normally have?He seemed nice enough, if a bit distant. She got the feeling he didn’t know how to properly express himself but cared a lot. If she didn’t normally understand t

The two of them did end up going back into the party separately but that didn’t stop the manager from catching on. He reached out to Edward a few days later about having dinner with his client to try and nail him for a sponsorship. He had no intention of sponsoring Angel but did want to see her again so he agreed. When she met up with him, the first thing she did was raise an eyebrow at him and speak wryly. “Edward Todd, huh? My manager says you’re a pretty big deal.”He shrugged. “Doesn’t prevent me from getting taken advantage of. In fact, it’s the primary reason people do. By all means, don’t get all formal with me now. You’re the only person who has ever called me Eddie and I kind of like it.”Angel relaxed slightly at his words. “Fair enough. I’m the one that got all informal on you last time anyway. Sorry about that…I’d never had alcohol before and my tolerance is low. Guess that’s another reason to stay away from it. I didn’t do anything too weird, did I?”“Aside from asking a
Angelina unsteadily hopped off the railing and leaned against it to look back up at him. He was half a foot taller than her. “Nobody’s ever asked me that before, let alone someone I just met. No one cares about a pageant girl’s motivations.“But I’ll tell you for the heck of it. I want to be a neurologist and help people like me. I have epilepsy. You know, the seizure disorder? I’m supposed to be the first person with epilepsy to become Miss Americana.“My mom talked about it in interviews all the time because she wanted to appeal to the audience’s sympathies about how brave I am. As if she would ever have such a selfless motivation. She’s just trying to make me look better.“I’ve never talked about this to anybody. I guess you have the kind of face that m
Edward Todd was getting more and more confused. The DNA report that he got Dr. Anderson to put a rush on had been emailed over to him and the evidence was conclusive. The amnesiac currently on Angel’s bed shared 50% of Aria’s DNA. Only he and her mother were capable of showing such a result on this kind of test. Yet he remained uneasy. The amnesia was bad enough but acting like a completely different person when confronted with the ocean was even worse. With amnesia alone, she would come back to him eventually. All it would take was patience and constant reminders of the familiar. But if her personality had changed, he was dealing with a wild card.A terrible part of him wondered if he could take advantage of her amnesia and personality changes to improve their relationship. He knew Angel didn’t love him. He had ruined her life, after all, even if it was an accident. They met when he was twenty-six and disillusioned about the world. His parents had never cared about him beyond what he
“You’re wrong,” Angel said firmly. “I’m not afraid of the ocean.”Hearing the ocean mentioned brought something back to her. Longing. Familiarity. She had the thought that it was only natural they found her on a beach because she spent a lot of time there. But how would she know that when she couldn’t remember anything else? Her confusion grew worse despite the clarity of that one piece of information. The ocean was important to her.Eddie frowned. “Angel…you’re confused. The whole time we’ve been together, you haven’t stepped foot on a beach. You said it brought back bad memories. You won’t go on boats either, even if there are dinner parties on them that you need to attend for your career.”“You’re wrong!” she insisted. “I love the ocean. I was doing something at the beach…I know I was. Something important.”The doctor looked back and forth between the two of them before addressing Angel. “What were you doing that was so important? Do you remember?”She strained trying to think of i
