Edward frowned. “Do you even have her contact information?”
“No but I dropped her off at her house and happen to remember exactly where it is. We can find her no problem,” Mark said confidently. “Are you willing to try, sir? I can’t think of any other possible solution while we locate Mrs. Todd.”
“At least wait a few days until she’s had time to catch up on her homework. That might increase your chances of success.”
An excellent idea. Edward retained his wits even though he was obviously worried sick about Angel. He would do everything in his power to get her back and in the meantime Mark would take care of the rest.
He desperately hoped Lily would agree. Based on the type of person she had been seven years ago, she would inconvenience herself to help others but this might be too big of a favor even for her.
Whether or not she would help them wasn’t even his biggest question right now. He was more concerned about what on earth happened to Angel. Edward might not be the most affectionate person in the world but she and Aria were everything to him. That much was clear.
If something truly happened to her, Mark wasn’t sure how his boss would continue to function. He hoped those private investigators were able to dig something up fast.

Lily was incredibly grateful she held on to her old pair of glasses as a backup. The prescription wasn’t perfect but it was better than Angel’s and would do until her replacement glasses were ready to pick up.
She never would have managed to finish all of her spring break homework by the skin of her teeth if she couldn’t see. As it was, she considered herself extremely lucky to finish. Especially since she was dealing with readjusting to her proper medication.
It was a terrible few days. She made it back to school with an incredible sense of accomplishment that she hadn’t fallen behind.
“Girl, you look like the undead,” her best friend Miranda Kelly noted as they ate lunch together between classes in the cafeteria on campus.
Randi was a philosophy major so their classes were in completely different parts of campus but they were able to meet up for lunch most days. They shared a Greek mythology class their freshman year filling a general ed requirement and hit it off. They had seen each other almost every day since except during school breaks when they had other things to do.
“Because I am the undead. I was pretty sick for most of spring break so I had a lot of catchup to do the last few days,” Lily said simply.
Her expression immediately grew concerned. “Did you have another seizure?”
“Yeah but it was because of a medication mix up. I’m really fine so don’t worry about me.”
‘Fine’ was a bit of an overstatement. Not only was she physically worn out from overdoing it to get all of her work done, she was emotionally worn out from processing the fact that she had a hidden twin all these years.
Lily wanted to meet Angel rather than simply hear about her but wasn’t sure if that would even be possible. She might still be missing. Either that or she now knew about her existence and simply didn’t want to contact her.
Both scenarios were bad for different reasons. Obviously, the first was terrible because Aria needed her mother and Eddie needed her in his own way too. The second meant that the one biological relative she had learned about her existence and didn’t care to know more.
The thought hurt more than it should have. She had gone nearly two decades without having any biological family. She had a wonderful adopted family and was close with all of her siblings. There wasn’t a lack of familial love in her life at all.
She didn’t care about the parents that abandoned her in the slightest but had wondered about other relatives, especially siblings over the years. If there were people who looked like her because none of her adopted family did.
Donovan was Black. Her sixteen-year-old sister Genevieve who used a wheelchair because of spina bifida had curly chestnut brown hair and blue eyes. Her eleven-year-old nonverbal autistic brother Adam was half-Asian. Her six-year-old sister Emma had the facial characteristics typical of Down’s syndrome but her hair was light brown and she had brown eyes. The Bennetts were an eclectic bunch.
Randi scrutinized her doubtfully. “You don’t look fine. Do you need a pick-me-up? Because I have a gift card to the smoothie place at the edge of campus that we can use.”
Lily smiled as warmly as her exhaustion would allow. She was such a good friend. “Thanks, Randi. You’re the best.”
“Of course I am,” she preened slightly before laughing. “So, are you ready for the last month and a half of our junior year? Midterms and spring break are now behind us but there is still so much to do.”
“Ugh, don’t remind me. End-of-the-semester stuff kills me every time. Why don’t you tell me about your spring break instead? How was the road trip up to Washington?”
Randi’s eyes lit up. “Beautiful! And so much fun. Four of us being packed into that little car with way too much junk food and endless road trip games was amazing. I wish you could’ve come.”
Lily had been the first person she invited but it didn’t work out because of the tide pool assignment. That ended up being a rather convenient excuse. Randi’s friends weren’t exactly her cup of tea so being stuck with them for a whole week sounded awful.
The rest of their break before their next classes was spent going over the trip in greater detail but she didn’t mind. Randi had a way of telling stories that could crack anyone up. It was nice having this bit of normalcy after the chaos of the last week.
Everyone always told Lily Bennett not to go check out the tide pools by herself. Her professors did. Her overprotective family members did. Her friends did. But she hated being held back by her illness so that particular day she threw caution to the wind.Being a highly independent person was difficult when you had epilepsy. For about a year and a half, her seizures had been too active so her driver’s license was suspended until she did a whole lot of paperwork and proved her doctor said she was okay to drive again. That had been awful. She only got it back six months ago.But there hadn’t been a single seizure since then. Her medication kept things stable. That was why she felt confident enough to go out to the tide pools alone today. The people in her life were concerned that if Lily ever went to the beach by herself and had a seizure she might drown. She was a marine biology student! Sometimes she had to go to the beach when she couldn’t get anyone to go with her.Assigning a repor
They had shared a P.E. class when Lily was a freshman and Mark was a senior. During the gymnastics unit she did a cartwheel and her glasses slid right off her face. They were the kind of thick black frames commonly referred to as ‘hipster glasses.’A lot of the boys catcalled her. One was particularly brave (or was it stupid?) and called out to her directly. “What are you hiding behind those clunkers for? You look better without your glasses!”Lily, who had put her glasses back on by then, took them off and squinted at him before delivering a scorching burn. “What do you know? You look better without my glasses too.”Everyone in the class went “ooooh” and the boy that dared mess with her turned beet red and tried to explain himself. “I didn’t mean anything weird by it!”She raised an eyebrow. “Oh? I think you did. I think you believe in the outdated notion than women have to conform to men’s beauty standards to get by in this world. Let me tell you something; I can’t wear contacts bec
Her head was fuzzy but she could feel someone holding her hand and hear someone trying to talk to her. Where was she? What happened? She couldn’t remember anything.Opening her eyes took tremendous effort and a very handsome, very blurry man appeared in front of her. She squinted trying to get a better look. He had chiseled features and dark hair with hazel eyes that were filled with worry despite his blank expression.“Angel? Are you alright?” the man asked in as casual a manner as possible considering he was gripping her hand rather tightly.“Who…who are you?” she asked. His face fell. “You’re messing with me, right? This isn’t funny. You know me…you have to know me. I’m Eddie, though you’re the only one that has ever called me that. Your fiancé.”Her fiancé? She had a fiancé? So he knew who she was then, right. “If you’re my fiancé then who am I? What happened to me?”“You’re scaring me. You’re Angel—Angelina Dawson. How hard did you hit your head? They found you at the beach; what
Nothing Eddie said was ringing any bells aside from having epilepsy. Somehow that seemed familiar to Angel.Still, she listened to him intently for hours in a state of disbelief but eventually he had to leave. “I need to go check in on Aria. I’ll be back first thing in the morning to take you home. Is there anything you want me to bring you?”Angel couldn’t think of anything. Her vision was blurry but she didn’t realize that was already a problem before she hit her head. She thought it was the result of her injury. So she sent him off to take care of their daughter.Eddie hesitated a moment before giving her a short but tender kiss on the forehead, scurrying away before she could say anything in response. She frowned at his retreating back. Isn’t kissing normal between fiancés? What sort of relationship did they normally have?He seemed nice enough, if a bit distant. She got the feeling he didn’t know how to properly express himself but cared a lot. If she didn’t normally understand t
Aria continued happily babbling about something Angel couldn’t quite decipher as she snuggled up against her and Eddie watched the two of them with a slight smile on his face. This was so strange. So foreign. Shouldn’t being home have triggered some of her memories by now?She didn’t recognize this adorable little girl or the man fondly watching over them. Now that she had her glasses on and could look around the room, none of this opulence looked familiar either. Her bedroom was huge. There were beauty products scattered all over the vanity and the bed could fit four people easily but there was still tons of space in the room itself. It was decorated in a rather feminine manner and she couldn’t help but wonder if Eddie stayed in this room too or somewhere else. There was only one dresser. Once again she found herself questioning the sort of relationship they had.A knock sounded on the door and Angel looked up to see a man with light brown hair, blue eyes, and more delicate features
“You’re wrong,” Angel said firmly. “I’m not afraid of the ocean.”Hearing the ocean mentioned brought something back to her. Longing. Familiarity. She had the thought that it was only natural they found her on a beach because she spent a lot of time there. But how would she know that when she couldn’t remember anything else? Her confusion grew worse despite the clarity of that one piece of information. The ocean was important to her.Eddie frowned. “Angel…you’re confused. The whole time we’ve been together, you haven’t stepped foot on a beach. You said it brought back bad memories. You won’t go on boats either, even if there are dinner parties on them that you need to attend for your career.”“You’re wrong!” she insisted. “I love the ocean. I was doing something at the beach…I know I was. Something important.”The doctor looked back and forth between the two of them before addressing Angel. “What were you doing that was so important? Edward Todd was getting more and more confused. The DNA report that he got Dr. Anderson to put a rush on had been emailed over to him and the evidence was conclusive. The amnesiac currently on Angel’s bed shared 50% of Aria’s DNA. Only he and her mother were capable of showing such a result on this kind of test. Yet he remained uneasy. The amnesia was bad enough but acting like a completely different person when confronted with the ocean was even worse. With amnesia alone, she would come back to him eventually. All it would take was patience and constant reminders of the familiar. But if her personality had changed, he was dealing with a wild card.A terrible part of him wondered if he could take advantage of her amnesia and personality changes to improve their relationship. Angelina unsteadily hopped off the railing and leaned against it to look back up at him. He was half a foot taller than her. “Nobody’s ever asked me that before, let alone someone I just met. Mark didn’t find her fourteen-year-old antics embarrassing at all. In his eyes, Lily had been a defender of justice. She didn’t go around picking fights for no reason. But he didn’t get the chance to say any more because they had arrived in front of her house. It seemed a decent size though it was in one of the older and cheaper parts of town. She mentioned all of her siblings were adopted and couldn’t help but be curious how many of them there were. The moment they pulled up to the curb, he didn’t even get to say goodbye. When the door opened, she was practically yanked out of the car into the arms of a short middle-aged Hispanic woman that had to be her mother.“Mija! You look terrible! I thought you said they were taking good care of you?” she demanded.“Mom, they thought I was someone else, remember? I was taking her medication and it kind of threw me off. I’m really fine but I have so much homework to do so please don’t yell at me too much.”Her mother rolled her eyes. “You’re ge
Mark was hesitant to answer. After all these years, he was finally talking to Lily Bennett and she wanted to know about her absentee identical twin!He didn’t think much of her, to be perfectly honest. Finding out she was the busy and semi-famous Angelina Dawson had changed his impression slightly but before that, he thought of her as a deadbeat mother who didn’t reciprocate the love his boss had for her.“I don’t have much of an impression of her. She’s hardly around when I am and if I do see her, she’s usually coming and going. Sometimes I see her with Aria. I’ve worked for Mr. Todd since she was an infant and I’ve never really interacted with her in all that time.“I didn’t know she was Miss California until you were in the hospital…but I’d have to guess that her busy schedule is related to the pageants themselves and all of the community service that comes with whatever title she’s currently holding.”Mark didn’t know much about pageants but knew they had different levels from tal
Lily couldn’t believe this. It sounded like something straight out of a soap opera. She had a long-lost identical twin! A long-lost identical twin with a seriously complicated life. How could she have the same DNA as a pageant queen with a secret daughter and lover?“Look, I’m sure this is a great shock to you but can I please have the phone now?” she begged. “You did promise.”Eddie handed it over without a word, still looking like the sky was falling. Well, he had just found out the woman he loved was still missing. That was kind of a big deal. She felt sorry for him but not sorry enough to keep dawdling while her loved ones panicked. She dialed the familiar number by heart and her mother picked up on the second ring with a frantic voice. “Hello? Do you have information about my Lily?”Her heart twisted. They had been looking for her. They probably put up missing posters and everything. “It’s me, Mom. I’m okay. I got a concussion and lost my memory for a few days but the people that
Angel noticed that Eddie was particularly solicitous of her after they went to the beach. He brought her food she liked before the accident and spent whatever time he wasn’t in the office by her side with Aria. She still hadn’t managed to figure out what she had been doing on the beach after straining her memory. She had the feeling she needed to go back to know for sure. But she couldn’t get out of bed. Whatever medication she was on now for her epilepsy made her feel off. She tried getting up to go to the bathroom once and ended up having a seizure, which totally freaked out poor Aria who had been sitting on the bed watching Disney movies with her.Everything felt off. Her glasses prescription. Her medication. Her so-called family. How could that be when she was obviously Angelina Dawson?“I want to go to the beach again,” Angel said firmly when Eddie got home on her third day of being at his house. He frowned. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? What if something happens to you? You
The two of them did end up going back into the party separately but that didn’t stop the manager from catching on. He reached out to Edward a few days later about having dinner with his client to try and nail him for a sponsorship. He had no intention of sponsoring Angel but did want to see her again so he agreed. When she met up with him, the first thing she did was raise an eyebrow at him and speak wryly. “Edward Todd, huh? My manager says you’re a pretty big deal.”He shrugged. “Doesn’t prevent me from getting taken advantage of. In fact, it’s the primary reason people do. By all means, don’t get all formal with me now. You’re the only person who has ever called me Eddie and I kind of like it.”Angel relaxed slightly at his words. “Fair enough. I’m the one that got all informal on you last time anyway. Sorry about that…I’d never had alcohol before and my tolerance is low. Guess that’s another reason to stay away from it. I didn’t do anything too weird, did I?”“Aside from asking a
