Angelina unsteadily hopped off the railing and leaned against it to look back up at him. He was half a foot taller than her. “Nobody’s ever asked me that before, let alone someone I just met. No one cares about a pageant girl’s motivations.
“But I’ll tell you for the heck of it. I want to be a neurologist and help people like me. I have epilepsy. You know, the seizure disorder? I’m supposed to be the first person with epilepsy to become Miss Americana.
“My mom talked about it in interviews all the time because she wanted to appeal to the audience’s sympathies about how brave I am. Ha. I’m not brave at all. I simply exist with what I’ve been given.
“I’d rather work behind the scenes than be the poster girl for overcoming epilepsy but I guess whatever publicity I do get helps raise awareness for people like me. As if she would ever have such a selfless motivation. She’s just trying to make me look better.
“I’ve never talked about this to anybody. I guess you have the kind of face that makes people want to spill all their secrets, Eddie. Thanks for listening, I guess. I should get going before my manager freaks out on me.”
Edward frowned. She was dumping all of that information on him and just wanted to walk away? He had never shared such an intriguing, albeit one-sided, conversation with another person before.
“If you have health problems, why are you drinking alcohol as a minor?” he blurted.
Angelina stared at him blankly for a moment before bursting out laughing. “Like I said, no one cares about me. I’m not a minor—I turned eighteen two weeks ago—but suppose I count as one when it comes to drinking…
“Truth be told, I’m not supposed to have alcohol at all. My doctor warned against it but my manager insists I need to drink to be polite. He says no one here is going to rat me out for being underage. And they probably won’t because they all want a piece of me. Hypocrites.”
Her expression suddenly fell as she began swaying. “Hey…I don’t feel so good…”
Edward immediately rushed forward to grab her and picked her up princess-style. She began convulsing in his arms a moment later. This must be one of her seizures. Had the alcohol brought it on?
Oh, what did that matter? He didn’t know anything about helping people with seizures! He needed to get her out of here without making a scene. He doubted she would want that.
And if what she said about her manager was true, he definitely wouldn’t do anything to help. It was up to Edward to take action.
The seizure stopped faster than he expected though. It only lasted about a minute before Angelina blinked up at him weakly. “Hey…can you get me out of here? I really want to go lie down.”
She trusted him, a virtual stranger, to do that? Obviously, he had no intention of doing anything to her but what if she had ended up asking this of someone else?
“…do you have any sense of caution at all? You’re a beautiful woman and I am a man, you know.”
“Yeah but you wouldn’t take advantage of me,” she said as confidently as she could considering how exhausted she looked. “Someone who gets used all the time wouldn’t use someone else. So, are you going to help me or not?”
Edward couldn’t argue with her logic. “I was going to help you anyway. I’m just saying you need to be more careful. Not everyone is as chivalrous as me.”
Angelina laughed slightly before coughing. “Thank you, Sir Eddie. Now, take me away on your noble steed before my manager drags me back in there.”
With the way that man had schmoozed everyone earlier and forced an at-risk underage girl to drink, he wasn’t even surprised. He did as she said and took her out to a secluded part of the garden with a long bench, setting her down before sitting next to her and readjusting things so her head was in his lap.
“Are you sure you don’t need to go to a hospital?”
“Nah, I know the drill by now. There’s nothing they can do for me anyway. I should just lay down here for a while until the dizziness passes and then drink lots of water. I’ll live,” she said matter-of-factly.
Edward felt a pang of sympathy for this girl. She might not think she was brave but he certainly did. Seeing her have a seizure had been somewhat terrifying and she dealt with those at least somewhat regularly based on her nonchalance.
Angelina yawned. “Hey…is it okay if I take a little nap on you? That should help me regain my strength. Then we can go back in one at a time so there aren’t any weird rumors.”
She didn’t want to have rumors with him? That was a first. Every young woman he had met since making it big in the real estate world had tried to use rumors with him to their advantage.
He found himself thinking that he wouldn’t actually mind having rumors with someone like her. Which was ridiculous because he loathed gossip.
“That’s fine. But if you’re going to do that, I think I’ve earned the right to call you by a nickname too, Miss Teen Monterey Angelina Dawson. Is that fair?” Edward asked.
A half-smile made its way onto her face. “So you knew who I was the whole time. Unfair, since I don’t even know your last name. But sure. Go ahead and call me Angel. Some of the girls at the toddler pageants called me that when I was little because they couldn’t pronounce my full name.”
She closed her eyes and he found himself staring down at this unique girl who seemed to hate her life yet continued on with things as if to spite it. A beauty queen taking advantage of the system to become a doctor was an intriguing concept.
Pageants were scholarship programs, after all, even though they were primarily known for being beauty contests. Angelina—no, Angel—was both beautiful and practical. A dangerous combination.
The two of them did end up going back into the party separately but that didn’t stop the manager from catching on. He reached out to Edward a few days later about having dinner with his client to try and nail him for a sponsorship. He had no intention of sponsoring Angel but did want to see her again so he agreed. When she met up with him, the first thing she did was raise an eyebrow at him and speak wryly. “Edward Todd, huh? My manager says you’re a pretty big deal.”He shrugged. “Doesn’t prevent me from getting taken advantage of. In fact, it’s the primary reason people do. By all means, don’t get all formal with me now. You’re the only person who has ever called me Eddie and I kind of like it.”Angel relaxed slightly at his words. “Fair enough. I’m the one that got all informal on you last time anyway. Sorry about that…I’d never had alcohol before and my tolerance is low. Guess that’s another reason to stay away from it. I didn’t do anything too weird, did I?”“Aside from asking a
Angel noticed that Eddie was particularly solicitous of her after they went to the beach. He brought her food she liked before the accident and spent whatever time he wasn’t in the office by her side with Aria. She still hadn’t managed to figure out what she had been doing on the beach after straining her memory. She had the feeling she needed to go back to know for sure. But she couldn’t get out of bed. Whatever medication she was on now for her epilepsy made her feel off. She tried getting up to go to the bathroom once and ended up having a seizure, which totally freaked out poor Aria who had been sitting on the bed watching Disney movies with her.Everything felt off. Her glasses prescription. Her medication. Her so-called family. How could that be when she was obviously Angelina Dawson?“I want to go to the beach again,” Angel said firmly when Eddie got home on her third day of being at his house. He frowned. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? Lily couldn’t believe this. It sounded like something straight out of a soap opera. She had a long-lost identical twin! A long-lost identical twin with a seriously complicated life. How could she have the same DNA as a pageant queen with a secret daughter and lover?“Look, I’m sure this is a great shock to you but can I please have the phone now?” she begged. “You did promise.”Eddie handed it over without a word, still looking like the sky was falling. Well, he had just found out the woman he loved was still missing. That was kind of a big deal. She felt sorry for him but not sorry enough to keep dawdling while her loved ones panicked. She dialed the familiar number by heart and her mother picked up on the second ring with a frantic voice. “Hello? Do you have information about my Lily?”Her heart twisted. They had been looking for her. They probably put up missing posters and everything. “It’s me, Mom. I’m okay. I got a concussion and lost my memory for a few days but the people that
Mark was hesitant to answer. After all these years, he was finally talking to Lily Bennett and she wanted to know about her absentee identical twin!He didn’t think much of her, to be perfectly honest. Finding out she was the busy and semi-famous Angelina Dawson had changed his impression slightly but before that, he thought of her as a deadbeat mother who didn’t reciprocate the love his boss had for her.“I don’t have much of an impression of her. She’s hardly around when I am and if I do see her, she’s usually coming and going. Sometimes I see her with Aria. I’ve worked for Mr. Todd since she was an infant and I’ve never really interacted with her in all that time.“I didn’t know she was Miss California until you were in the hospital…but I’d have to guess that her busy schedule is related to the pageants themselves and all of the community service that comes with whatever title she’s currently holding.”Mark didn’t know much about pageants but knew they had different levels from tal

Everyone always told Lily Bennett not to go check out the tide pools by herself. Her professors did. Her overprotective family members did. Her friends did. But she hated being held back by her illness so that particular day she threw caution to the wind.Being a highly independent person was difficult when you had epilepsy. For about a year and a half, her seizures had been too active so her driver’s license was suspended until she did a whole lot of paperwork and proved her doctor said she was okay to drive again. That had been awful. She only got it back six months ago.But there hadn’t been a single seizure since then. Her medication kept things stable. That was why she felt confident enough to go out to the tide pools alone today. The people in her life were concerned that if Lily ever went to the beach by herself and had a seizure she might drown. She was a marine biology student! Sometimes she had to go to the beach when she couldn’t get anyone to go with her.Assigning a repor
They had shared a P.E. class when Lily was a freshman and Mark was a senior. During the gymnastics unit she did a cartwheel and her glasses slid right off her face. They were the kind of thick black frames commonly referred to as ‘hipster glasses.’A lot of the boys catcalled her. One was particularly brave (or was it stupid?) and called out to her directly. “What are you hiding behind those clunkers for? You look better without your glasses!”Lily, who had put her glasses back on by then, took them off and squinted at him before delivering a scorching burn. “What do you know? You look better without my glasses too.”Everyone in the class went “ooooh” and the boy that dared mess with her turned beet red and tried to explain himself. “I didn’t mean anything weird by it!”She raised an eyebrow. “Oh? I think you did. I think you believe in the outdated notion than women have to conform to men’s beauty standards to get by in this world. Let me tell you something; I can’t wear contacts bec

Edward Todd was getting more and more confused. The DNA report that he got Dr. Anderson to put a rush on had been emailed over to him and the evidence was conclusive. The amnesiac currently on Angel’s bed shared 50% of Aria’s DNA. Only he and her mother were capable of showing such a result on this kind of test. Yet he remained uneasy. The amnesia was bad enough but acting like a completely different person when confronted with the ocean was even worse. With amnesia alone, she would come back to him eventually. All it would take was patience and constant reminders of the familiar. But if her personality had changed, he was dealing with a wild card.A terrible part of him wondered if he could take advantage of her amnesia and personality changes to improve their relationship. He knew Angel didn’t love him. He had ruined her life, after all, even if it was an accident. They met when he was twenty-six and disillusioned about the world. His parents had never cared about him beyond what he
“You’re wrong,” Angel said firmly. “I’m not afraid of the ocean.”Hearing the ocean mentioned brought something back to her. Longing. Familiarity. She had the thought that it was only natural they found her on a beach because she spent a lot of time there. But how would she know that when she couldn’t remember anything else? Her confusion grew worse despite the clarity of that one piece of information. The ocean was important to her.Eddie frowned. “Angel…you’re confused. The whole time we’ve been together, you haven’t stepped foot on a beach. You said it brought back bad memories. You won’t go on boats either, even if there are dinner parties on them that you need to attend for your career.”“You’re wrong!” she insisted. “I love the ocean. I was doing something at the beach…I know I was. Something important.”The doctor looked back and forth between the two of them before addressing Angel. “What were you doing that was so important? Do you remember?”She strained trying to think of i
