Chapter 3

Author: NineSept
Susan: "So, how does it feel seeing all these comments? Even happier now?"

I gave a cold smile and replied: "Yes, being with him is my greatest happiness."

Seeing my response, Susan probably gritted her teeth so hard they cracked.

She'd been secretly in love with Daniel for years, but he only tolerated her because she was my friend. Every time I showed off our relationship, she was consumed with jealousy.

She thought I didn't know, but I'd known all along. I genuinely considered her a sister and didn't want to fall out over a man.

Susan: "That's right, seeing you happy puts my mind at ease. If you two could have a child, it would be absolutely perfect."

She knew perfectly well I couldn't have children, yet she deliberately brought it up, using a tone of fake sympathy to reopen my wounds.

Seeing the word "child," I couldn't help feeling a sharp pain. I touched the scar on my stomach—was it worth it?

For Daniel, I had paid such a high price, yet he betrayed me.

I continued: "It is unfortunate we can't have children, but Daniel says he loves me most and that won't change whether we have kids or not."

Susan: "Haha, sure."

I put my phone down and closed my eyes to sleep. There was a ninety percent chance Susan wouldn't reply again—if she did, she'd just be asking for trouble.

When I woke up, Daniel was already dressed and ready. As he adjusted his cuffs, he said softly, "Why not sleep a little longer? Be good and get more rest."

He used to be the one who couldn't get out of bed, wanting to cuddle with me. Since getting involved with Wendy, he'd been going to the office earlier and earlier.

I knew he was eager to see his mistress.

They must have made love countless times in his office. There was a rest area there—originally just a sofa and a tea table, but later, a large bed and bathroom were added.

Daniel's explanation was that sometimes he got too tired at noon and wanted to take a shower and nap there.

Ridiculously, I believed him. It wasn't until later, when he admitted his affair with Wendy, that I learned it was their little love nest.

"I can't sleep. I had a nightmare," I sat up, looking exhausted.

"What nightmare?" Daniel bent down and stroked my head.

I answered, "I dreamed you were cheating on me, with that secretary of yours."

Hearing my words, Daniel's face changed dramatically, as if he'd seen a ghost.

Fortunately, his mental resilience was strong. He quickly recovered and laughed, "Honey, why are you overthinking things so much lately? Even in your dreams? How could there possibly be anything between me and Miss Luther? If you don't trust her, I'll fire her today and hire a male secretary instead. Surely you won't worry about me being gay?"

He took out his phone, ready to call Wendy.

I got up and grabbed his hand to stop him. "It was just a dream. Don't actually fire her, or everyone at the company will think I'm a jealous wife."

Even if he fired her, he'd find a way to keep her as his mistress somewhere else. It would just be in a different location.

Better to keep things where I could see them clearly.

"I knew you would trust me, trust in our relationship." Daniel's relief was genuine. He placed a kiss on my forehead. "I'm going to work now. Feel free to check on me anytime."

After Daniel left, I got dressed and headed out.

I drove to the old villa district in the suburbs. This area was once home to only the wealthy and powerful—and it's where I was born.

From childhood, I was raised in comfort and luxury. My parents were educators—one a university professor, the other a high school teacher—an intellectual family.

Then I met Daniel, and for him, I transformed into a rebellious troublemaker. My parents finally gave up on me and cut ties.

I hadn't been back since.

My mother secretly sought me out once, begging me to break up with Daniel and apologize to my father. They promised to send me abroad to study since I couldn't get my high school diploma or attend university locally. They would secure my future.

When Daniel found out, he left me a suicide note and went to the seaside alone.

His extreme behavior, which I now see as manipulation, seemed like profound love to my younger self. I refused my mother's offer and bet her that Daniel and I would make something of ourselves and be happy.

After that, my parents left the country, truly leaving me behind.

Standing at my old home's entrance, I looked up at the peeling walls. Memories of our happy family life flashed through my mind, and tears streamed down my face.

"Luna? Is that Luna?"

A surprised voice came from behind me. I quickly wiped my tears and turned around.

"Auntie... Auntie Lanny?" I asked in disbelief.

Auntie Lanny had been our neighbor. Years had passed, and fine lines now framed her eyes and mouth, with strands of gray in her hair.

She and my mother had been close friends, and I often went to her house to play.

"It's been so long! Come, have dinner at my place. Nick is back from abroad today too. Remember him? You two used to do homework together and play badminton..." She was as enthusiastic as ever, taking my hand and leading me toward her house, chatting away.

Nick Peterson?

Hearing that name again felt like being transported to another lifetime.

Before meeting Daniel, Nick and I were childhood sweethearts. We grew up together, and he was my first crush.

After I got together with Daniel, Nick tried to stop me, but I ignored him. Eventually, he blocked me on everything and we lost contact completely.

I only heard about Nick occasionally through old classmates—he got into a top university, went abroad, and built his life step by step along the path of academic excellence.

I should have walked toward that bright future with him, but instead chose a completely different life.

Looking back, I gave up everyone I cared about for Daniel.

Those who remained in my life were all two-faced people wearing masks.

At Auntie Lanny's doorstep, I suddenly lost my nerve and stopped, afraid to go in.

"What's wrong? Come on in!"

Auntie Lanny urged me.

I shook my head. "Auntie Lanny, I'll visit you another time. Today I have to—"

Before I could finish, her phone rang. She answered it.

"You're not coming home today? You have a gathering?"

"I already bought all the ingredients!"

"Fine, fine. I was just about to tell you that I ran into—"

She didn't get to finish either. The person on the other end had already hung up.

I guessed it was Nick.

I summoned my strength to drive home, managing to lie in bed looking sick before Daniel returned. He really did come back—after publicly making out with Wendy in that private room, he dropped everything because of one phone call from me.My heart filled with both sorrow for what our love had become and fear at how easily he switched between masks."Honey, did you take your temperature? Why didn't you call Dr. Landon to check on you?" Daniel took off his jacket and bent down to feel my forehead, his face full of concern. "How did you catch a cold out of nowhere? Let me take your temperature first."He turned to get the medicine box, his busy figure something anyone would praise as "husband material."After checking my temperature, I did have a slight fever, probably caused by my emotional state—something Daniel didn't know.He prepared medicine for me, watched me drink it, then got into bed and held me. His movements were gentle and attentive, but the mixture of alcohol and perfum

Looking at his sleeping face, my eyes traveled down to just below his left collarbone, where a small blue moon was tattooed—the spot closest to his heart, my mark.In the near future, a white cloud would appear next to that little moon—the space Daniel secretly reserved for Wendy. His explanation to me would be, "A moon all alone is too lonely. Even for a tattoo, I couldn't bear the thought of you sitting by yourself on my chest, so I added a cloud to keep you company."How could I be lonely next to a heart that loved me?Unless that heart no longer did.—The next day was Saturday.Daniel didn't have to go to work. Boy-crazy," Nick's cool voice criticized me, making my face burn even through the phone.Back then, like my parents, he strongly advised against my relationship with Daniel. I completely brushed him off and even said some hurtful things.Looking back now, I was basically an idiot.I felt dejected realizing his only impression of me was as a lovesick fool. That time at the hotel, he'd handed me tissues and left. Clearly, we had nothing to say to each other anymore, not even worth catching up.Auntie Lanny objected to Nick's comment. "What do you mean 'boy-crazy'? Luna is doing quite well now. Daniel's expression darkened. "Susan, if you don't know how to speak properly, then shut up."Susan quickly covered her mouth, apologizing. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, my big mouth! What I meant was that Miss Luther works closely with you as your right-hand woman. If she gets involved with the wrong person, it could affect her work, which would be bad for you. Maybe you should look out for her!"Daniel's expression softened slightly, but his tone remained cold. "It's none of my business. She can date whoever she wants."Such distant words—anyone hearing them would think he had no romantic interest in Wendy whatsoever, that they had a purely professional relationship. But in my mind, all I could see were images of them entwined on the apartment bed and kissing passionately by the elevator."Right, what do other women matter to you? Just take care of your wife," Susan said, giving me a meaningful look.Daniel was annoyed by her cryptic remarks and essentially asked her to leave. "Susan,

I don't want to upset her—be more careful next time."Hearing these words, nausea surged through me again.Daniel didn't know I was awake, which is why he dared to speak so freely.I rushed back upstairs as quickly as possible, buried myself under the covers, and fought back the sickening feeling.Thankfully, he never realized I'd been downstairs. The housekeeper looked at me in surprise. In the past, Susan would often instruct them to prepare certain dishes, and I never objected—I'd even ask them to make extra for Susan to take home. This was the first time I'd ever refused her request.Susan finally realized what was happening. She stood up and glared at me. "What's your problem? I can't even have a meal at your house now? Is this about that stupid dress?"Stupid dress? I sat down on the sofa and replied coolly, "That 'stupid dress' you're referring to was custom-made. It's the only one of its kind in that style and color globally, worth around a million."Susan's face flushed red. She snapped, "But I told you, I didn't damage it! If a million-dollar dress is that poorly made, you should take it up with the brand, not suspect me. Besides, Daniel is so rich and so generous with you. It's his money anyway, and if he doesn't care, why are you being so petty?"Her words revealed not just impatience and embarrassment, but the

You know our relationship has been through so much. Of course we have basic trust."Melvin fell strangely silent for a few seconds on the other end. I'll get going then!""Okay."After hanging up, I took my medication and sat on the sofa, not wanting to go upstairs.I'd barely slept last night watching Daniel, and now drowsiness overcame me. As he finished speaking, he seemed to remember something and immediately looked at me nervously. "Honey, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been drinking with Miss Luther. I was wrong, and I promise it won't happen again!"Looking at his Oscar-worthy performance, I was astounded.I knew he was faking being drunk last night—he hadn't slept that deeply. I knew his alcohol tolerance too well. Besides, coming here with Wendy was clearly for intimate activities, so why would he allow himself to get completely wasted? He was just improvising after seeing me at the door.He did eventually fall asleep on the sofa—alcohol does have some effect, after all.“Miss Luther brought you here. You gave her the door code?" I stared intently into Daniel's eyes.He scratched his head, seemingly trying to recall something, then nodded. "Yes. Instead, I immediately spotted Wendy walking toward their group through the crowd.I tightened my grip on my phone as humiliation and anger rapidly swelled inside me.A few cold words from me this morning weren't enough to upset Daniel to the point of needing to drink away his sorrows. He was just using an excuse to avoid coming home, using Melvin and Leon as cover to meet Wendy. In that moment, I suddenly realized he truly loved Wendy. Daniel was obviously confused by my reaction. He got up too. "How can you say I don't care? If I didn't love you or didn't want you anymore, could you accept that? This is a normal reaction—I'm not trying to force you. Why are you suddenly angry?"He reached for my hand, trying to calm me down.Men who stray always become extra patient and accommodating with their wives at home. "She offered to give me her dress, and you didn't notice?" I looked incredulous.Daniel laughed helplessly. "Honey, you were so beautiful that day—how could I pay attention to any other woman? She probably bought a knockoff. Those shouldn't be expensive."I pretended to have a realization. "You're right, it must have been a fake. And since I realized I don't like wearing clothes others have worn, I threw it straight in the trash."Daniel's brows furrowed slightly. The dress was expensive, and it was a gift to Wendy. He could give her money, but definitely within limits. This was something he'd confessed to me in my previous life after I discovered his affair."Well, if it's gone, it's gone.
