Chapter 6

Penulis: NineSept
Looking at his sleeping face, my eyes traveled down to just below his left collarbone, where a small blue moon was tattooed—the spot closest to his heart, my mark.

In the near future, a white cloud would appear next to that little moon—the space Daniel secretly reserved for Wendy.

His explanation to me would be, "A moon all alone is too lonely. Even for a tattoo, I couldn't bear the thought of you sitting by yourself on my chest, so I added a cloud to keep you company."

How could I be lonely next to a heart that loved me?

Unless that heart no longer did.

The next day was Saturday.

Daniel didn't have to go to work. He woke up lazily, habitually reaching out to find where I was.

I had already gotten up.

"Honey, why are you making breakfast again? Don't we have a housekeeper? You should sleep in—" His words cut off abruptly as he came downstairs and saw two people at the dining table.

Melvin had a bacon sandwich stuffed in his mouth, and Leon was drinking fresh soy milk.

When they saw Daniel, they greeted him in unison, "Morning, bro!"

I brought over a bowl of overnight oats and set it on the table, wearing a faint smile. "You're up. Have some breakfast. Melvin and Leon came by early. I couldn't sleep, so I came down to take care of them."

Melvin winked suggestively. "Sorry to interrupt your morning intimacy."

"Are you two beggars? Can't afford breakfast at your own homes, so you come here and make my wife cook for you?" Daniel scolded, though his face showed he was smiling.

Leon finished his last sip of soy milk and wiped his mouth. "Luna still makes the best breakfast. Feels like old times."

Back then, we all shared a small courtyard house. I would occasionally make them breakfast, and we were all happy together, getting along well.

The corner of my mouth turned up in a slightly sarcastic smile.

These two were Daniel's ride-or-die brothers and supposedly my good friends too. I treated them like my own younger brothers and thought we had a genuine relationship.

Yet when Daniel was secretly seeing Wendy behind my back, they were his best wingmen.

Talking warmly and reminiscing about the past while actively treating me like a fool.

I didn't understand why, and I didn't want to. Eventually, I would prepare everything and leave these scumbags behind.

"Of course, my wife's cooking skills are far better than any restaurant," Daniel naturally wrapped his arm around my waist, showing off.

Melvin looked extremely envious. "Back then, Luna never did any housework. She learned to cook just for you. Why can't I find a woman like that?"

I sat down next to Daniel, my expression calm as I quietly listened to their conversation.

Melvin was a playboy who changed girlfriends like changing clothes. How could he possibly find a good woman? Even if he did, he wouldn't be able to keep her.

Perhaps because they were all so promiscuous, they not only felt no guilt about Daniel's affair but actually thought it brought them closer as brothers.

They talked about bits and pieces from the past, interweaving memories of Daniel's and my love story. For a moment, it felt as if we had truly gone back to the beginning.

Until Melvin stood up. "By the way, Luna, we need to borrow your husband today. The brothers are having a meeting, grabbing some food, shooting the breeze. Is that okay?"

"Go to hell. Can't you guys eat without getting together now? Every time I have a moment to spend with my wife, you come looking for me to eat?" Daniel appeared thoroughly annoyed.

But I knew they had all planned this together, creating opportunities for Daniel to meet his mistress.

Looking at these three people I once trusted most, putting on their clumsy performance in front of me, I felt nothing but disgust and mockery.

Seeing Daniel's reluctance to leave, I deliberately suggested, "Since Daniel doesn't want to go out, why don't I cook something here? You can invite the others over and we'll have a gathering at home."

When I said this, all three of them froze.

In my previous life, I trusted them completely, always happily agreeing and even encouraging Daniel to go out with them.

Seeing their reaction, I almost laughed out loud.

Daniel's expression changed slightly as he looked toward Leon.

Leon immediately spoke up, "Those guys love drinking. When they get drunk, they're messy and loud. Better not bring them home to bother you. Don't worry, we promise not to let Daniel drink too much!"

"Honey, I'll go with them for a bit to get them off my back," Daniel said, affectionately kissing my cheek. "I'll definitely be home before seven."

I pushed him gently. "Okay, go ahead."

The feeling of his kiss increasingly disgusted me, like a leech briefly attaching itself to my skin.

Daniel got up and left with Melvin and Leon, completely failing to notice my unusual reaction.

His heart had already flown to Wendy. As long as he had an excuse to get away from me, he couldn't wait to leave. He no longer had the patience to notice these details.

I asked the housekeeper to clear the dishes while I went upstairs to our bedroom.

I gathered all the gold jewelry from our wedding and a diamond ring, put them in my bag, and left the house.

I found a pawnshop and exchanged all the gold and the diamond for cash, which I then deposited into a bank account.

If I really wanted to leave, I'd need to go far away. That would require substantial money to relocate and live on.

On my way home, I passed a hair salon.

"Please cut my hair short and dye it brown," I told the stylist.

"Miss, your hair is in such good condition. It would be a shame to cut it short," the stylist said, examining my hair.

I looked at myself in the mirror, still wearing the same long, straight black hair I had at seventeen. But I wasn't seventeen anymore, and Daniel had found someone else to replace me.

I smiled slightly, my gaze determined. "Cut it short, just below my ears."

Daniel's fingers had enough of Wendy's hair strands to play with. I found it disgusting now.

After cutting my hair, I felt incredibly refreshed. My mood improved a bit. I paid and drove to the apartment.

In the apartment parking lot, Daniel's Rolls-Royce was in its spot, next to Wendy's red BMW.

At this very moment, they were probably enjoying their thrilling affair upstairs.

This was the first property Daniel and I had purchased together. From renting to buying, it had witnessed our love story. Even though we no longer lived there, we couldn't bear to give it to anyone else.

Now it had become the perfect place for him to have trysts with another woman.

Hotels risked discovery; this place was safer and more exciting.

He once said he saw my shadow in Wendy. I wondered if, in the heat of passion, he was imagining she was me?

Men are so good at finding excuses for their desires, labeling them with "love" as if that somehow made their affairs noble and pure.

I curled up in the driver's seat, recalling moments from my previous life while waiting for them to emerge.

Within an hour, Daniel and Wendy appeared together, one after the other. Their clothes were neat and clean, and they maintained a professional distance that showed nothing unusual.Daniel spoke to Wendy with the demeanor of a boss, giving her instructions. Even if paparazzi had captured this moment, they couldn't have detected any hint of intimacy from their behavior. He was careful—after their affair, his performer personality emerged during that moment of post-intimacy clarity. After finishing his instructions, Daniel prepared to leave, but Wendy called him back. From my angle, I could see the elevator entrance to the parking garage. Wendy stood just inside the doorway, looking at Daniel with lingering desire. Suddenly, she opened her coat, revealing lingerie underneath. This seemingly innocent, vulnerable woman making such a provocative gesture—Daniel strode back to her, eagerly embracing the temptress. They kissed passionately for a while, too excited to worry about someone po

Before I turned seventeen, Nick and I were close in that awkward space between friends and something more. That hint of romance vanished the moment I met Daniel."I vaguely remember her. Boy-crazy," Nick's cool voice criticized me, making my face burn even through the phone.Back then, like my parents, he strongly advised against my relationship with Daniel. I completely brushed him off and even said some hurtful things.Looking back now, I was basically an idiot.I felt dejected realizing his only impression of me was as a lovesick fool. That time at the hotel, he'd handed me tissues and left. Clearly, we had nothing to say to each other anymore, not even worth catching up.Auntie Lanny objected to Nick's comment. "What do you mean 'boy-crazy'? Luna is doing quite well now. Haven't you seen that TV show? Daniel treats her wonderfully. Stop being so snarky!"Nick let out a scoffing laugh but said nothing more.I gripped my phone tightly. "Auntie Lanny, I'm a bit busy lately, s

Daniel's expression darkened. "Susan, if you don't know how to speak properly, then shut up."Susan quickly covered her mouth, apologizing. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, my big mouth! What I meant was that Miss Luther works closely with you as your right-hand woman. If she gets involved with the wrong person, it could affect her work, which would be bad for you. Maybe you should look out for her!"Daniel's expression softened slightly, but his tone remained cold. "It's none of my business. She can date whoever she wants."Such distant words—anyone hearing them would think he had no romantic interest in Wendy whatsoever, that they had a purely professional relationship. But in my mind, all I could see were images of them entwined on the apartment bed and kissing passionately by the elevator."Right, what do other women matter to you? Just take care of your wife," Susan said, giving me a meaningful look.Daniel was annoyed by her cryptic remarks and essentially asked her to leave. "Susan,

"I can't make it tonight. And your lipstick got on my sleeve today. My wife noticed it. I don't want to upset her—be more careful next time."Hearing these words, nausea surged through me again.Daniel didn't know I was awake, which is why he dared to speak so freely.I rushed back upstairs as quickly as possible, buried myself under the covers, and fought back the sickening feeling.Thankfully, he never realized I'd been downstairs. For the rest of the evening, he acted completely normal around me, just like old times.—The weekend arrived, and the company anniversary celebration went ahead as planned. The venue was on the top floor of the company headquarters. All executives and management would be attending, along with various business partners.I got up early to get dressed. The mermaid gown still sparkled brilliantly. After I put it on, the makeup artist couldn't stop complimenting me.When Daniel saw me, amazement and delight filled his eyes. "Honey, you look stunning."

"Mrs. Smith, you—" Wendy noticed something was wrong, but before she could finish, Daniel saw what was happening and strode over, roughly pushing her aside.Wendy fell to the ground, looking up at Daniel with shock and hurt in her eyes.Daniel gripped my arm, realized my dress was compromised, and immediately took off his jacket to drape it over my shoulders. Then he glared coldly at Wendy. "What do you think you're doing?""I—"Wendy was so upset she was on the verge of tears, biting her lip and unable to speak.“Miss Luther was just chatting with me when my dress suddenly split. Daniel, can you come with me to change?" I stepped in to defend Wendy.I knew Daniel was afraid Wendy might slip up in front of me and reveal their relationship. That's why he reacted so angrily.Wendy stood up with a defiant look. "Mr. Smith, since Mrs. Smith’s dress is damaged, why not she borrow mine? I have a spare outfit anyway!"She was secretly testing him. The dress was Daniel's gift to her—me

Taking the brooch from my dress, I threaded it through the torn section, then put Daniel's jacket back on and returned to the party. But Daniel and Wendy were nowhere to be seen.“Luna, let's have a drink!" Melvin and Leon appeared, glasses in hand, blocking my search for Daniel.I gave them a cold look but played along, taking the glass and drinking. After that, I pretended to be tipsy and asked the driver to take me home.Melvin and Leon finally stopped interfering. In the elevator, I told the driver to wait for me in the parking garage. I claimed I felt sick from drinking and needed to use the restroom on the executive floor. The entire company was on holiday, so the executive floor was deserted.Faint moans came from behind the main office door. I stopped in my tracks, my chest heaving uncontrollably."This is your punishment. Next time you approach her on your own, I'll destroy you!""Mr. Smith, I was wrong, I'm sorry...""Did you say anything inappropriate in the chang

"It's quite nostalgic, isn’t it?” he said, polishing a silver cup with a nostalgic tone. "When you and Mr. Smith first came here for drinks, you were barely eighteen or nineteen. In the blink of an eye, so many years have passed. Now you're both wealthy. That's wonderful."I sipped my drink, a bitter smile on my lips, remembering the first time Daniel brought me to a bar.I never drank before that. He didn't want me to either, saying alcohol was no good, but I didn't want to watch his friends drinking while I sat awkwardly apart. I insisted on learning.Eventually, my tolerance improved, and Daniel rarely stopped me anymore."Mrs. Smith, you haven't been here in ages. Why are you alone today?" the bartender asked.I'd already finished my drink in one go and smiled. "He's busy. Give me another."Most of the bartenders Daniel and I knew had left. Only this one remained. The other staff were unfamiliar faces. I accepted my second drink and gazed blankly at the increasingly lively ba

I opened my mouth but couldn't call out to him.If I hadn't chosen Daniel, I would probably be like Nick now—with family, friends, and a career.I held my throbbing head and hurriedly left the bar, my thoughts in complete disarray.Back home, I took a bath to sober up.Susan had sent several messages.Susan: Where did you disappear to again?Susan: Daniel didn't go home with you? What's going on? Was he having an affair?Susan: That secretary kept hanging around Daniel. I saw several people mistake her for you. Aren't you jealous?Reading these thinly veiled provocations, I understood exactly what she was thinking."Honey? Honey?" Daniel's voice called from outside, full of tenderness. "Are you taking a bath? Come out soon. I brought you some food—you probably didn't eat enough earlier."I didn't answer, just submerged my head under the water.Daniel opened the bathroom door. Seeing me underwater, he rushed over as if crazed, shouting, "Luna!"He grabbed my arms in panic and

The housekeeper looked at me in surprise. In the past, Susan would often instruct them to prepare certain dishes, and I never objected—I'd even ask them to make extra for Susan to take home. This was the first time I'd ever refused her request.Susan finally realized what was happening. She stood up and glared at me. "What's your problem? I can't even have a meal at your house now? Is this about that stupid dress?"Stupid dress? I sat down on the sofa and replied coolly, "That 'stupid dress' you're referring to was custom-made. It's the only one of its kind in that style and color globally, worth around a million."Susan's face flushed red. She snapped, "But I told you, I didn't damage it! If a million-dollar dress is that poorly made, you should take it up with the brand, not suspect me. Besides, Daniel is so rich and so generous with you. It's his money anyway, and if he doesn't care, why are you being so petty?"Her words revealed not just impatience and embarrassment, but the

"We're fine. You don't need to worry," I interrupted Melvin. He cautiously probed, "Really? I'm worried you're angry, and that would make Daniel miserable again."Being with Daniel was my willing choice, but I was young and had never been in a serious relationship before, so I occasionally had emotional moments. In Melvin and Leon's eyes, I was the treasure Daniel held in the palm of his hand.I smiled lightly, "Really. You know our relationship has been through so much. Of course we have basic trust."Melvin fell strangely silent for a few seconds on the other end. I couldn't tell if he was pitying me or mocking me.Then he sighed with relief and answered cheerfully, "That's good. I'll get going then!""Okay."After hanging up, I took my medication and sat on the sofa, not wanting to go upstairs.I'd barely slept last night watching Daniel, and now drowsiness overcame me. My eyes quickly grew heavy. I wasn't even aware of when Daniel came downstairs or when he carried me to b

As he finished speaking, he seemed to remember something and immediately looked at me nervously. "Honey, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been drinking with Miss Luther. I was wrong, and I promise it won't happen again!"Looking at his Oscar-worthy performance, I was astounded.I knew he was faking being drunk last night—he hadn't slept that deeply. I knew his alcohol tolerance too well. Besides, coming here with Wendy was clearly for intimate activities, so why would he allow himself to get completely wasted? He was just improvising after seeing me at the door.He did eventually fall asleep on the sofa—alcohol does have some effect, after all.“Miss Luther brought you here. You gave her the door code?" I stared intently into Daniel's eyes.He scratched his head, seemingly trying to recall something, then nodded. "Yes. Since we had that disagreement, I was feeling nostalgic about our time living here. I wanted to spend the night here. Melvin and Leon were also drunk, so I had to troub

Wendy's eyes flashed with surprise, then her lips involuntarily curled into a slightly smug smile.Such a meaningful apartment, yet he'd given it to her. She must think she was about to replace me completely."By the way, Miss Luther, could you speak with building management for me? I need access to the security footage. I suspect someone's been living here," I said abruptly, fixing her with a piercing stare.Wendy's smile instantly froze, terror returning to her eyes.I was like a magic pen, able to rewrite her expressions at will. She stammered, "W-what? Mrs. Smith? Why would you th-think that?""Daniel and I haven't lived here for a long time, but when I checked the utility bills today, there's been normal usage every month. I suspect someone's been squatting here or stealing utilities," I explained with complete seriousness.Earlier, when I suspected Wendy was living here, I'd specifically checked the utility bills, confirming my suspicions.Wendy was genuinely panicking no

Me: Yes, he really is a good man. Then she sent me a video: They're close to us, but we have to leave now so we won't disturb them. Let's get together sometime.Me: Sounds good.I opened the short video Elaine had casually recorded. In those brief five seconds that panned across Daniel's area, I didn't focus on the men drinking. Instead, I immediately spotted Wendy walking toward their group through the crowd.I tightened my grip on my phone as humiliation and anger rapidly swelled inside me.A few cold words from me this morning weren't enough to upset Daniel to the point of needing to drink away his sorrows. He was just using an excuse to avoid coming home, using Melvin and Leon as cover to meet Wendy. In that moment, I suddenly realized he truly loved Wendy. I had been with him too long, we had been through too much, and he simply refused to admit his change of heart. He wanted to prove to everyone who had mocked us and opposed our relationship that he, Daniel Smith, wasn't

Daniel was obviously confused by my reaction. He got up too. "How can you say I don't care? If I didn't love you or didn't want you anymore, could you accept that? This is a normal reaction—I'm not trying to force you. Why are you suddenly angry?"He reached for my hand, trying to calm me down.Men who stray always become extra patient and accommodating with their wives at home. It helps ease their conscience a little."I'm just irritated and in a bad mood. Go to work—I'm going for a run to clear my head!" I refused to soften my attitude, maintaining this inexplicable anger as I changed into workout clothes and left.Daniel didn't follow me. I jogged around the track again and again, enjoying the feeling of sweat pouring down my face. Only when I figured he'd probably left for work did I return home for breakfast.Around noon, Melvin called me. “Did you and Daniel have a fight?""Why do you ask?" I was relaxing with a face mask on, my voice slightly muffled."He just called me t

"She offered to give me her dress, and you didn't notice?" I looked incredulous.Daniel laughed helplessly. "Honey, you were so beautiful that day—how could I pay attention to any other woman? She probably bought a knockoff. Those shouldn't be expensive."I pretended to have a realization. "You're right, it must have been a fake. And since I realized I don't like wearing clothes others have worn, I threw it straight in the trash."Daniel's brows furrowed slightly. The dress was expensive, and it was a gift to Wendy. He was clearly bothered that I'd thrown it away. What if Wendy demanded compensation from him?His attraction to Wendy was mostly physical. He could give her money, but definitely within limits. This was something he'd confessed to me in my previous life after I discovered his affair."Well, if it's gone, it's gone. If she needs compensation, I'll just pay her," Daniel clearly wanted to end this topic. He tossed the invitation aside and looked at the painting I'd bou

I looked utterly surprised. "Nick Peterson? You saw him?""Stop pretending. I saw you two on a livestream," Daniel said darkly. "If Susan hadn't told me, I'd still be in the dark. When you chose me back then—do you regret it now?"Looking at his unpredictable expression, I could see his insecurity and obsession showing through. He was all too aware that his background couldn't compare to Nick's. I had struggled alongside him, and he feared I might have regrets. If I had chosen Nick, my life truly would have been smooth sailing.I did regret it, but I couldn't say so.Daniel's background and experiences had left flaws in his character. He could never accept the truth. That would make it even harder for me to leave."Show me your chat with Susan," I held out my hand.Daniel opened his conversation with Susan. Apparently, someone was livestreaming the exhibition. Susan couldn't attend, so she watched from home and spotted Nick and me.But Nick and I had walked one behind the othe

Now my nervousness was mainly because I feared he'd see through how miserable and pathetic my life actually was."Here alone?" He walked up to me in a few steps. His light blue denim shirt was slightly wrinkled but fit him perfectly, paired with casual black jeans that looked elegant on him.He glanced at the painting I was carrying—one I'd purchased earlier today."Yes. What brings you here?" I asked, feeling awkward."Your parents are back. As their neighbor, I thought I'd buy them a painting as a gift," Nick replied casually. As a child, I spent more time at Nick's house, but his relationship with my parents was equally close. My father especially liked Nick, always praising him for being smart and level-headed—someone destined for success.I fell silent, reminded again of the little boy called “Peter.”Nick stood with his hands in his pockets, looking relaxed. "I remember you were an art student in high school, studying painting. Why don't you help me choose something?""O
