Chapter 1: Old friend

ROSE

"Alpha..." I heard from the other side of my door.

"Not now!" I said scanning through a stack of paperwork which had made its way onto my desk a few hours ago. This stack of paper contained the exceptionally long, and very boring financial report which I needed to double- no- triple check. Part of being an alpha of the largest pack ever was to make sure all our finances were in order and I preferred not making any mistakes.

"Alpha!!" The voice, I now recognised as having belonged to my beta, screamed from outside of the wooden door to my office, and soon her loud voice was accompanied by loud banging noises from the door.

As she screamed my pencil slipped causing a long dark grey streak across my page filled with numbers. I growled in anger and prepared to rip my hair out. This was the fifth time this week that she had pulled a stunt like this, and I was running out of copies of the report, patience, and I suspected I would soon be running out of hair as well.

"Just come in!!!" I said and flung my pencil at my beta as she entered the room. It hit her head and bounced off, only to land onto the floor. She winced slightly and rubbed the part of her head which it had landed on.

"Very mature Rose!" She said as she shook her head, picked up the pencil and threw it back at me.

I rolled my eyes and caught it with a quick swoop. The entire pencil fit like a reversed dart between my thumb and index finger.

"What is it Carina?" I asked as I erased the dark mark off of my page.

She came right next to me and I looked up into her worried green eyes.

"Alpha Rose,” she then stayed silent for a while and breathed out heavily before speaking. “Deamian is here..."

My eyes widened and I froze as the blood in my veins ran cold and a strange pang crept into my chest. I didn't expect him to actually show up... considering the fact that he hadn't wanted anything to do with anyone for seven years. Considering…

I cleared my throat and said, "Tell him to come here."

Hopefully, I could get through to him now... But what actually made him decide to agree to see me now? Deciding that it was not my place, nor in my interest to wonder further into his reasons, I shook my head.

I smelled him before I saw him. This time, however, he smelled different... his scent resembled that of a fully grown werewolf, replacing the slight puppy scent he still had on him the last time I’d seen him. He smelled of something indescribable. It was a scent so intoxicating that I could barely discern any other scent, no matter how many times I attempted to sniff. Eventually I placed my hand in front of my nose for a second, afraid that I would become intoxicated and lose track of what needed to be said. As soon as I saw him, confusion struck and I rubbed my eyes a few times to ensure I was not imagining the tall figure standing before me. He was gorgeous?

He had dark; shiny black locks styled perfectly in a way which looked messy, but neat at the same time. His eyes were piercing blue, just like his mother’s. His jaw looked so sharp that it threatened to cut my eyes out as they scanned over his face. His well-defined muscles were hugged perfectly by the black suit he was wearing. The man standing before me now was total contrast from the nerdy, acne-covered seventeen-year-old with silver and blue braces covering his skew teeth.

"Alpha Rose, looking stunning as always," he said walking up to me, a smirk making its way onto his face. His eyes shamelessly drank in my appearance. Clearly his personality was also upgraded from well-manner young man to dodgy creep.

I walked towards him, finally coming back to my senses and said, " Flattery gets you nowhere with me. I thought you'd have learnt that by now.” When he was just inches away, I stopped. “Long-time no see, old friend."

He kept quiet and we stared at each other for a few long seconds, both aware of the unspoken past we shared, the pent-up feelings and my anger.

"Why am I here Alpha?" Cutting to the chase, as always.

"I don't know. You tell me. What made the rat decide to finally come out of hiding?" I asked venomously. I was in no mood to play his games. Besides, the awkwardness had me on edge.

He looked down at me- gosh he was tall- practically towering over me. So, I looked up at him, but stared hard at him, making him know I wasn't afraid, nor was I inferior to him.

"Why am I here, Rose?” He repeated, this time softer than before, as if trying to muster up a side of himself he thought I would be willing to reason with.

"Your mother-" and that was when all reason was thrown out of the window.

"I should've known!" He said as he turned around and began to walk out. He was practically fuming, and all evidence of any previous civil behaviour had evaporated.

"Running away from your past won't solve anything." I said, trying to stop him from leaving. He, however, was too quick and as I attempted to grab the ends of his blazer, the fabric slipped from my grasp.

"Yes, it will. Now if you'll excuse me, I have my own agendas to get through. It was nice meeting you but-"

And then he froze, and so did I.

She stood there, resting her slender body against the doorpost. She was beautiful and dressed in a pale blue. Her face, which closely resembled Deamian's own, was ageless, as though time had never once had the opportunity to use its wrinkled poison to corrupt her supple skin

"Mother..." He breathed, more in shock than anything else.

She smirked, causing a tiny dimple to form on her left cheek.

"You make sure that if you'd don't want to be found, you aren't. How are you doing, son?"
