Chapter 400

I spoke seriously and earnestly.

Luke's face lit up with a smile. "During breakfast, Marianne has been observing you."

"Why is she observing me?"

I was completely focused on my food during mealtimes, as long as Luke wasn't discussing work. I didn't care about anything else.

Suddenly, it occurred to me. "Is Marianne trying to figure out what I like?"

"Jen, you can be quite oblivious sometimes," Luke said, his smile now tinged with a hint of helplessness. "But there are advantages to being oblivious, too."

Luke's last sentence was so soft that I could only tell he was speaking, but couldn't make out the words.

Before I could ask him to repeat himself, his phone rang, and he stepped aside to answer it.

Thinking about this now, I started to wonder in what other ways I might be oblivious.

Penelope had already set out the breakfast she bought on the small table provided in the private hospital room. She and Annette were sitting at the table, eating.
