"Did you not sleep well last night?" I asked, noticing the dark circles under Penelope's eyes and the faint bloodshot look. I reassured her, "The doctor said Jon will be fine once he stops taking the medication."

"I was up late working on something. I'll catch up on sleep during the day," Penelope replied, glancing at the thermos in my hand. "That's thoughtful of you, Jen."

"The soup was made by Marianne. I'm just delivering it. It's Mr. Walker's way of showing concern for Jon." I had mentioned Marianne to Penelope before, so she knew about her employment relationship with Luke.

I had called Annette on my way to the hospital. Not wanting to keep her waiting, Penelope and I continued talking as we entered the hospital building.

In the early morning, the hospital smelled of disinfectant as cleaners went about their work. There weren't many people around, and compared to the daytime hustle and bustle, it was quiet enough to hear our own footsteps.
