Joey, seeing this scene, thought Luke was just acting tough but secretly waiting for her. She was delighted.

She stood next to Luke, feigning shyness.

This girly side of Joey felt jarring to me.

Brian and I, afraid of ruining this "beautiful" atmosphere, instinctively stepped back in perfect unison, as if we'd been trained for it.

Luke's brow furrowed, a chill emanating from him.

When did the elevator get so cold?

I wondered, quietly pulling back my hand that was about to rub my arm for warmth.

Perhaps Brian's gesture of holding the elevator gave Joey the false impression that Luke cared for her but couldn't show it publicly. As soon as we exited the elevator, she said to Luke in a coy voice, "Lu, I haven't had breakfast yet."

"Our company doesn't provide breakfast," Luke replied professionally. "Brian, get her some snacks we offer to clients."

"Thank you, Lu. I knew you cared about me!"

Hearing this, I looked up, exasperated.
