ARIANA

The moment I stepped into the house, I met Zayde and his mother in the living room. They looked livid spotting me at the door. Before I got a chance to speak, the woman lunged at me.

“How dare you? How dare you betray my son like that after all he's done for you?” She spat angrily.

I stood there confused and looking to my husband for help. Not once did he raise his face to look at me. “Where is this coming from?”

“Don't play innocent with me, you dumb whore!” She took another step into my space and I stepped back. “You said you were going into town to run a few errands. Did that also involve riding another man's cock? Your husband's rival of all people?”

Now I was pissed. “I understand that we don't get along at all but lying to my face like this is so low of you.”

“Don't you dare…” came Zayde's voice as he rose from his seat and approached me. “Don't you dare try to gaslight us here. Now, look at this…”

He put his phone in my face and on the screen was a photo of Gabriel and I, his hand around my waist and his lips on my cheek.

Gabriel was my husband's business rival. That photo wasn't depicting all that had happened.

“This is a misunderstanding. Gabriel sent me a text saying he had something to discuss concerning the company that could cause a dent in our reputation.” I shrieked, disgusted that they would even accuse me like that.

Selene barked out in laughter, branding me with a whole new look of scorn. “You expect us to believe that nonsense. What do you take us for, fools? I didn't know you could stoop so low to be such a cheat and a liar.”

I let out a dry, humorless laugh. “So, I step out for a few hours for the sake of the company only to return and find this lie piled up against me.”

“That's no lie. I know what I'm seeing here. If you're not meeting up with Gabriel and letting him fuck you while you moan out the secrets of Zayde's company, why didn't you tell your husband know where you were headed?”

“Because I thought I could handle it alone without creating a scene. It wasn't that big of a deal in the end. I was just about to leave when that stupid photo was taken. This is a setup obviously.” I scoff with an eyeroll.

But his mother wasn't letting up on me. “That lame excuse won't work.” She rivets to Zayde, already fuming. “I warned you about ending up with this leech. Now she's whoring away company's secrets.”

I shake my head in amusement, my hold on my handbag tightening as I begin my way into my room. Their rage bait wouldn't work on me this time. “This has to be some joke that I'm not interested in. Excuse me.”

“Not only are you such a prostitute, your mother didn't raise you not to walk away when elders are talking to you.”

‘It's rage bait, Ariana. Rage bait’, I tried to talk myself out of it but I found myself swiveling around to fire back.

“Keep my mother out of your lying mouth!” My words came out as a vehement hiss.

I'd barely taken a step when she grabbed me violently by the wrist, whirled me around and delivered a slap so loud that it resounded in my ears.

SMACK!

I wasted no second in raising my hand to deliver mine in defense when Zayde intercepted the hit with his hand and stepped in between us, his nostrils flaring open in anger. He glared down at me.

“Let this be the last time you raise a hand against my mother.”

Hurt multiplied with anger within me, drowning me in so much pain. “But you stood there and did nothing when she hit me.”

“Because you deserved it!” She barked from behind him, huffing and stomping her way to a couch to sit.

The anger in his eyes faded off and there was only disgust in there. Still, his voice was gentle when he said, “You pushed her, Ari. It was your fault she hit you. If you'd said nothing in retaliation, I'm sure she wouldn't have. After all, there's no beating the allegations of what you've done with Gabriel.”

I stared at this man I called my husband and wondered what was going through his head in that moment. As always, he would support his mother even if evidences proved she was in the wrong.

Tears brimmed in my eyes. “Cheat? I've done nothing but stay faithful even when all your mother does is intrude in our marital affairs and nag about the things I did and didn't.”

“Don’t try to turn this around, Ariana. I'm highly disappointed that you would go behind my back to go and have an affair with Gabriel.” Sadness and anger reflected in his eyes.

What was left to say when they had already made their conclusions?

I turned to his mother who was on the chair looked so smug as she watched the scene unfold. “I hope you're happy now.” With that, I spun on my heels to walk back to my car.

But as I did, I caught her harsh words. “Of course, go back to your lover like the cheap whore you've always been.”

Then I closed the door behind me with a loud thud.

ZAYDEAriana had been distant. I could tell because of how nervous she usually got, the impatient tap of her ring against something, how fidgety she was becoming. It had been too glaring and I discarded it as small fry.At first, I thought it was work as usual but deep down, my instincts pointed me in the lane I didn't want to venture down into. And like my mom usually said, “your intuitions are always right.” Of course, she was right. Maybe I'd been a fool blind to it.Some days ago, she had replied me in clipped tones, avoided my eyes a few times and even pulled away from my touch. Something was off. My gut twisted every time I thought about it.I sat at the dining table, staring absently at the meal on it. It was sumptuous alright, but not enticing enough to distract me from the burdens of my heart. When I raised my eyes, I found my mother watching me carefully from across the table.“Is something bothering you, Zayde?” She asked, her tone sharp as always. She used that tone on m

ARIANA“Maybe you should stay back one more day? It won't hurt.” Mom said, following me to where my car was parked vertically in the driveway. I'd parked it wrongly last night when I drove in, blind with tears. I spent the night in my old room with her arms around me, consoling me till morning. But now was the time to head back home and prove my truth to them. “No, mom. I need to call Gabriel and have him speak to Zayde. I don't care if they are rivals or not. I need to clear my name.”She sighed with a facepalm, wrapping her sleeping robe around her again. “With the way you described the situation last night, I doubt he'd want to listen to you. And his mother —”“Oh she can go fuck herself. I'm married to Zayde, not her.” She gave me a gentle smile. “Why don't I come along before she tries anything else stupid? Nobody gets the right to touch my daughter. Give me a minute, baby.”I put out a hand to stop her. “No, mom. I'll be fine. It won't be like last night. Nothing will go wron

ARIANAFour years later…The buzz of the city filtered through the glass walls of my office. On the table was a plaque on which my name was boldly inscribed.Unapologetically mine. My empire, fashion-forward and bold. It had risen like a phoenix, taking the other fashion houses in the city by surprise. Every event I attended, there were whispers of my name and achievements under a short time. Those whispers fueled me, plus the words from Gerry, a chef in my ex-husband’s home. “Your accident was more than meets the eye, ma'am. Isabella had it planned.”That devil. Plotted my accident and when she thought I was dead, got herself pregnant for Zayde and married him. By the time I'd be done with them, they'd be a sorry sight. “Ms. Ariana,” my secretary's voice cut through my thoughts. She peeked her head in, her hands gripped a sleek tablet. “It's almost time for the stakeholders’ meeting. Oh, and there's a man in the conference room. Says he's a representative from an old friend.”I no

Zayde“What on earth do you want from me? My life?” I screamed within me as I stared at my phone. The loud and continuous buzz of my phone’s notifications got on my nerves as I went through the mountain of files cluttered around my desk. It was freaking me out and pissing me off. The worst part? The numbers of files to go through was very demotivating even though I was staring at the profit numbers that my company has made in the past two weeks. It was all supposed to be fulfilling but instead, I didn't feel that way. I felt a deep hollow in my heart that could not get filled up. Something was definitely wrong with me but, what could that be? I leaned back in my chair, staring outside my office window. All I could see in front of me was a city out before me. A city that was nothing but a jungle that bustled with life and numerous life changing opportunities. It might amaze you that so many people's destinies were tied up there. As I stared out, with countless thoughts running

Ariana’s POVI felt it the moment he saw me. I could feel eyes following me wherever I went and I was surprised that he was here by this time. His gaze burned into my back, dragging me into the past I had sworn to leave behind. My fingers curled around my handbag and I didn’t need to turn around to know it was him.Zayde Kincaid.Four years, and yet one could still know if he was within a vicinity. His presence carried the same suffocating power that I felt the first day I met him. He hasn't changed one bit. Everyone seemed to be happy, exchanging conversations and contacts. While others who were not involved, clicked glasses as a grand orchestra played in the background. I had long anticipated this event but now, it felt like the world had become so suffocating because of his presence here. A waiter passed, offering a tray of an expensive drink. I ignored it and set my glass on the nearest table instead. If he wanted a confrontation, he would have to work for it.I took a step

Zayde’s POVI still haven't recovered from the disgrace and the humiliation that Arian put me through and at that gala, I got a lot of stares and whispers from people that made me call my driver to take me out there immediately. You know what? The past has a way of gripping you by the throat when you least expect it and this time, the shocking return of Ariana did that. I had spent four years forgetting about Ariana, forcing Ariana into the furthest corners of my mind, convincing myself she was nothing but a scar. Something that I healed from but never forgotten. I had sworn to myself that she wouldn't make my heart flutter. Not even for the last time but yet, here I was, drowning in the thoughts of her, unable to silence her voice in my head. Her accident. Her disappearance and above all, her shocking return. If I didn't see her physically, I could swear that it might be a doppelganger who looked exactly like her. But, it wasn't. I touched her. Zayde's pov "You should have stayed away, Isabella. I never had good intentions for you. Now, you are going to meet your end by coming to see me.”I said the words calmly, too calmly, considering what I was about to do. I was going to destroy her and put an end to this nonsense since she thought she could run back to me like a child running back to his mother. I was not in the mood for that. I didn't like her a bit. I hated her so I was going to eliminate her before she goes around causing trouble for me. Surprisingly, my mother has not called me. She used to be the first person who called me when there were issues between Isabella and I. But, now. I didn't receive anything like that. Maybe Isabella forgot to tell her this time around. She was such an idiot! A fool who thought she was very smart. But I was about to show her now that she was far from that. Isabella stood in front of me, completely unfazed, like she had already won everything. Like she knew no matter what, she h

Isabella After I was kicked out by Ariana, I went back to my room and cried my eyes out. I was not crying my eyes out because she sent me out of her office but because it was clear that I could no longer manipulate her to do my biddings. As if that was not enough, my conscience began to prick me hard simply because I haven't heard anything from Zayde. I knew we were done and I was trying to move on but I couldn't help myself any longer. I had to call him and hear that heartbreaking word from him one more time. “Isabella, you called? Don't expect me to ask you the reason for the call?” He asked over the phone and I wiped my tears with the back of my palm. "You don’t love me anymore, do you? I'm sorry that I'm disturbing you with my calls but my mind has not been at rest ever since we stopped talking,” I said to him and the words slipped out of my mouth very neatly. I wished I could hit my head on the wall because I already knew the answer to the questions I just asked. I just

IsabellaI was not happy for her and I could never be. Yes, my heart was still hurting from everything I had passed through because Ariana existed. I wish she didn't. It's been weeks since Zayde left me and I have been trying to move on. I have been to bars to drink my heart out and I have also had one night stands with men I knew not. Don't be too quick to judge me. I was just a young lady suffering from heartbreak who thought doing this would fix me. But, it didn't. It only made things worse for me. I had lost my looks, my spark and even the weight I had tried my best to gain. "She really thinks she’s better than me! I guess she must be laughing at me right now in her head!” I lamented and I knew I sounded so bitter. My fingers gripped the phone tighter as I stared at the breaking news on my screen.“No way! This shouldn't be happening. I had destroyed her life. I had wrecked her to the extent that she would never be able to get her feet back for a long time. How could this h

ZaydeAriana and I had been getting really along because of what happened between her and Gabriel. She promised me that she was not going to meet with him again and I told her to cut ties with him. In my presence, she blocked his number and deleted everything about him. It was a welcome development even though I knew that I might not have a chance with her. I loved her so much but yet, I couldn't remind her of that everytime. I had to make sure she sees it in my actions. We decided to go to a library to relax and read a few books since that was what she wanted. My mind was not fixed on the book we were meant to read because I wanted to talk to her about us. "Have you ever had a moment so perfect you almost think it's a setup?" I asked her, trying to strike a conversation and Ariana turned to me with her eyes narrowed and her lips curled in suspicion. “What are you talking about?" She asked and I cleared my throat. Gabriel“The mistake you two made was calling the cops on me!” I yelled at them, not scared of what was going on. I already had a lot of things in place. I was going to outsmart them and there is nothing they can do about it. What do they take me for? A criminal? Just because a girl who I was in love with made me mad?I sat back in my chair, watching the swarm of cops flood in with their guns drawn out. They were all barking orders like wild dogs but I couldn't blame them. They were doing their job. My wrists were already cuffed, but I barely felt the metal against my skin because I wasn’t worried. Not even a little. One of the officers, an ugly square-jawed, no-nonsense man stepped forward. "Gabriel, you are under arrest for…” he tried to speak but I laughed out loud. Idiot! Who said I wanted to listen to him? "Oh, spare me the script. We both know how this goes. You slap on the cuffs on me, drag me out, parade me in front of cameras like you had caught a criminal. Zayde’s POVI was halfway home when I checked my phone again, expecting a reply from Ariana but I got nothing from her. She hadn’t responded to my last message, and she always texts back quickly even if she is angry at me. The least she could send was a rather short reply .Something about it made me feel very concerned. I got to thinking that something was off somewhere. Her silence for over an hour was something I could question. I frowned, pulling over to the side of the road. My fingers moved quickly, opening our shared location app.The location showed that she was at Gabriel's office but that was not what she told me earlier when we spoke briefly. She had mentioned that she would be at her office for a short while if it was too late for her to still be working. Then, why on earth was the location map showing that she was at Gabriel's office?Something was not adding up. A bad feeling curled in my gut even though I didn't want to think about it too much. Ariana’s POV I had no idea how I got into this small dark room but I knew that Gabriel was also with me in here "You really thought you could outsmart me, didn’t you?" He asked and he sounded so dangerous. His voice made my skin crawl and I struggled against the ropes tied around my wrists. The ropes were too tight and I wish I could get them out by pushing too hard. My heart pounded as I scanned the room. There were no windows. There was also no easy way out. It was just me and him. "I swear to God, Gabriel, if you don’t untie me right now…" I blurted out. My eyes were almost falling out of my socket as I tried hard to push my body against the wall. "You will what? Tell me, what the hell are you going to do?” He asked with a smirk on his face. I wished he was as tense as I was but no, he looked too calm and was at ease, like he hadn’t just kidnapped me and shoved me into some dark, empty office space. "You’re insane. Ariana’s POV"You have no choice, Ariana. You either come back to me, or your mother pays the price."Gabriel’s words still kept echoing in my head like a death sentence and I couldn't stop thinking about it. I knew that he was not joking after he said such a thing to me.I had now convinced myself that Gabriel was a psycho who wasn't capable of loving. My hands trembled as I gripped my phone, rereading the message over and over. The evidence he claimed to have, the threat he had so casually thrown at me was all real and I could feel it.He couldn't possibly be joking about something like this. I stood in my apartment, resting my head on the wall. My mother had her faults, but she didn’t deserve to have her name dragged through the mud. And the child... my child. His damn child too…no, no. Gabriel’s POVI was guilty as charged. I was not just a man who was in love. I was a stalker and I made sure I monitored wherever Zayde and Ariana where going. It had become a daily routine for me. I had not seen myself taking my eyes off my phone. After the last encounter with the both of them, I was very humiliated. Zayde punched me so hard and I couldn't fight back. When I got home, I slapped myself countless times for allowing myself to get beaten up by Zayde in front of Ariana. Why couldn't I fight or defend myself? I thought I had taken taekwondo classes the other year. Yet, he keeps beating me anytime we fight. I think I might have forgotten why wee were rivals. Zayde seemed to be ahead of me in most areas and I didn't want that. You think you have won, Zayde? You have no idea what is coming. I'm preparing something that will come to you as a shocker. I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth, rolling my jaw. The bastard got a good hit in, I had give him that. But
