ARIANA
Four years later… The buzz of the city filtered through the glass walls of my office. On the table was a plaque on which my name was boldly inscribed. Unapologetically mine. My empire, fashion-forward and bold. It had risen like a phoenix, taking the other fashion houses in the city by surprise. Every event I attended, there were whispers of my name and achievements under a short time. Those whispers fueled me, plus the words from Gerry, a chef in my ex-husband’s home. “Your accident was more than meets the eye, ma'am. Isabella had it planned.” That devil. Plotted my accident and when she thought I was dead, got herself pregnant for Zayde and married him. By the time I'd be done with them, they'd be a sorry sight. “Ms. Ariana,” my secretary's voice cut through my thoughts. She peeked her head in, her hands gripped a sleek tablet. “It's almost time for the stakeholders’ meeting. Oh, and there's a man in the conference room. Says he's a representative from an old friend.” I nodded, already knowing who it was. “Got it. Let's not keep them waiting.” Her heels clicked behind me as we headed down the hall. As we passed by a mirror, I took a brief look at it to see confidence radiate off me like heatwaves. Of course, I turned heads as I passed. They always did. Why wouldn't they? The surgery was a huge success and although healing put me in so much pain, it was worth it in the end. The man was already seated when I walked in. We exchanged quick pleasantries—handshakes and tight smiles. By the time the other investors arrived, the air in the room hummed with anticipation. The meeting moved fast. All business talk about alliances and market domination. I kept my poker face on, speaking when needed and steering when necessary. These men thought they ran the world. They didn't realize I'd been remaking it, one thread at a time. Minutes later, it was over. After a full minute of handshakes, nods and agreements, it was another win for Ariana Campbell. The moment I stepped into the wide lounge, I was hit with a stench. Cheap perfume masking something foul. Isabella. She's perched on one of the chairs like a crow, dressed in an outfit so garish it screamed money can't buy taste. There's a gasp from her and a brief look of shock, then she tried to recover. Too late. I'd noticed it already. “You're surprised to see me,” I approached her, folding my arms as I stood in front of her. She rose to her feet as well and her lips curl into a sneer. “Not surprised. Just amused.” She scanned me like a predator sizing up prey. “You’ve brush up well for someone who fell so far.” I arhed a brow, refusing to rise to her bait. “You know,” she continued in that venomous tone, “it's impressive, really. Most ex-wives of billionaires manage a quiet retirement, maybe a modest push to keep them relevant. But you…” she looked me over and released a cackle. “You're here, working nine-to-five in someone else's company in another state. How quaint.” A smirk tugged at my lips. “It's cute that you think this isn't mine.” Her face hardened. “What's that supposed to mean?” “Figure it out,” I smirked and prepared to leave for the elevator. Her nostrils glared but before she can retort, she tuned to my secretary. “I'm here for the stakeholders’ meeting.” The words froze me in my steps. I glanced at my secretary, who fumbled over her response. “The meeting?” I interjected, enjoying the way panic flashes across Isabella's face. “Oh, that ended. Punctuality isn't your strong suit.” She stiffened, recovering with a derisive laugh. “And what kind of company finishes a meeting knowing I'm attending? Such arrogance for something so new. I should have a word with your CEO to teach her a thing or two about proper work ethics.” My secretary's eyes darted to mine. I held her gaze and gave a subtle nod. Clearing her throat, she said, “The CEO is…in another meeting. She'll attend to you shortly.” Isabella huffed, flicking her hair over her shoulder. “Fine. But let her know I don't wait long.” She strutted to a seat and plopped down like she owned the place. I turned to my secretary. “Elevator. Now.” We stepped inside and as the doors closed, I spoke low. “Don't let her near my office. After two hours, tell her the meeting's cancelled.” “Yes, Ms. Campbell.” The elevator dinged open and I strode back to my sanctuary. Isabella's audacity burned fresh in my mind. ‘Your feathers might be bright now, Isabella,’ I thought to myself as we rode up, “but I'll pluck them one by one until you're nothing but bare bones.’Zayde“What on earth do you want from me? My life?” I screamed within me as I stared at my phone. The loud and continuous buzz of my phone’s notifications got on my nerves as I went through the mountain of files cluttered around my desk. It was freaking me out and pissing me off. The worst part? The numbers of files to go through was very demotivating even though I was staring at the profit numbers that my company has made in the past two weeks. It was all supposed to be fulfilling but instead, I didn't feel that way. I felt a deep hollow in my heart that could not get filled up. Something was definitely wrong with me but, what could that be? I leaned back in my chair, staring outside my office window. All I could see in front of me was a city out before me. A city that was nothing but a jungle that bustled with life and numerous life changing opportunities. It might amaze you that so many people's destinies were tied up there. As I stared out, with countless thoughts running
Ariana’s POVI felt it the moment he saw me. I could feel eyes following me wherever I went and I was surprised that he was here by this time. His gaze burned into my back, dragging me into the past I had sworn to leave behind. My fingers curled around my handbag and I didn’t need to turn around to know it was him.Zayde Kincaid.Four years, and yet one could still know if he was within a vicinity. His presence carried the same suffocating power that I felt the first day I met him. He hasn't changed one bit. Everyone seemed to be happy, exchanging conversations and contacts. I had long anticipated this event but now, it felt like the world had become so suffocating because of his presence here. A waiter passed, offering a tray of an expensive drink. Zayde’s POVI still haven't recovered from the disgrace and the humiliation that Arian put me through and at that gala, I got a lot of stares and whispers from people that made me call my driver to take me out there immediately. You know what? The past has a way of gripping you by the throat when you least expect it and this time, the shocking return of Ariana did that. I had spent four years forgetting about Ariana, forcing Ariana into the furthest corners of my mind, convincing myself she was nothing but a scar. Something that I healed from but never forgotten. I had sworn to myself that she wouldn't make my heart flutter. Not even for the last time but yet, here I was, drowning in the thoughts of her, unable to silence her voice in my head. Her accident. Her disappearance and above all, her shocking return. If I didn't see her physically, I could swear that it might be a doppelganger who looked exactly like her. But, it wasn't. I touched her. I held her hand even when she did
Ariana’s POVThe moment I stepped into the charity auction, I felt the shift in the air. Eyes followed me as I walked down and everyone had mixed expressions on their faces. Some were curious, others were anxious while a few others looked envious of me. People really whispered behind their champagne glasses, wondering if I was truly back for business or for something else and I smiled at myself because of the effect I had on them. Let them wonder. If that alone will make them sane, then let them do it. I walked past the decorated marble columns and my heels clicked against the polished floor.I had dressed for war tonight and my outfit was able to make heads turn. My dress was a red silk dress and my hair was pinned into a sleek updo. I also wore a red lipstick which seemed to dare anyone that crossed my where. And if I knew one thing, I knew that Zayde Kincaid was here and he was waiting. He had suddenly turned into my personal stalker and I loved it. ****"That was a bold mov
Zayde's POVIt was crazy as hell but it was happening. I was belittled again and the worst part?!She had the guts to poach into my Line of business. While we talked and exchanged words last night, the tension between Ariana and me burned in my veins. Every word she said to me kept replaying in my mind.I can’t stop it. Ariana's POV I was just getting started. The same way they were shocked about my return, that was how my next move was going to throw them off balance. The plan is simple. Get Isabella and break her against her will. Then, I will fold my hands and watch her carefully constructed empire fall apart. It sounded so easy as I thought of it but nothing about this felt simple to execute. Despite the revenge I was planning against these folks, the memories of Zayde and everything we had kept haunting me like a ghost when I least expected it. I knew I had been acting tough and that I hated him. Yes, I do hate him. It’s been four years, and yet, every time I thought of him, my heart ached in places I didn’t even know could hurt. I needed to push those thoughts aside. It's already over. Zayde is no longer my concern. Isabella is. And I can’t afford to get distracted now. ZaydeI have never been the one to beg. I don’t chase women even if I like them to death. I don’t plead with them even when I make mistakes. I don't do anything that will hurt my ego as a man. But with Ariana, I find myself breaking my own rules. For the past few days, I have been meaning to talk to her. I wanted to talk to her in a fancy restaurant, over a cup of hot tea. But, she seemed not to be interested even when I made it clear that it was not my intention to go on a date with her. She was getting a wrong impression of me and I could not change that with how desperate I have become. To make things worse for me, I sent her expensive flowers and to my greatest surprise, she sent them back to me. I had so many flowers in my office now that I had no idea what to do with them. I was able to get her number but she didn't answer my calls. I was desperate. Desperate enough to want to speak to her. I send different people who were under me to talk to her every day to deliver
Zayde’s POV I never liked waiting even for the slightest thing and Patience had never been something I knew how to do best, especially when it came to business. I didn’t wait for things to fall apart, I made sure they never did. But as I sat in my office, scanning the latest reports. I could not ignore the Isabella’s company unravelling disaster. Another client gone. Another contract terminated. Another headline questioning the integrity of her brand. I exhaled sharply, tossing the papers onto my desk. "What the hell is going on, Isabella? What exactly went wrong? Have you seen the latest report about your company?” I asked, a little but concerned because whatever was happening in her company slightly rubbed on me too because I was her husband. Isabella stood across from me, looking so sad with her arms crossed. I had been closely monitoring the progress of her company and this time, I wondered what excuse she was going to give concerning this massive failure. "Arian
Ariana’s POVPeople loved a good scandal and they would kill to get more of that scandal. What was surprising to me was that I never expected that I would be the person to experience such a scandal. People didn't care if it was true or not. Once a story hit the internet, it spread like wildfire and it was almost impossible for anyone to stop it. “Seriously?” I scoffed, staring blankly at my screen. Right now, my name was on every damn headline. I was dragged through the mud like I was some desperate social climber who used men to get ahead in life. I kept staring at my phone, scrolling through article after article and each one was worse than the last. The comments were even worse and if I had a knife in my hand, I would have unlived myself. People said a lot of mean things about me. "Of course she slept her way to the top. Women like her always do.""She played Zayde, now she is playing Gabriel. Classic gold-digger move.""Such a disgusting brat! If she knew she wanted that, s
