Scent of Desire

〈胡桃（こもも）が具合が悪いと言うんだ。もみじ、胡桃はお前の妹だろう？妹が具合が悪いと言うのに、お前は少しも心配じゃないのか？冷たい女だな〉

「だけど、誠司（せいじ）さん！今日は私の──」

〈キンキン喚くな、うるさい。胡桃の様子を見たらすぐに帰る、これで満足だろう？待っていろ〉

それだけを言うと、男は通話をぶつりと切ってしまった。

ツーツー、と無機質な機械音が耳に届くだけになり、女性──新島（にいじま）もみじは、疲れたように溜息を1つ零し、スマホを持った手をだらり、と力なく垂らした。

「今日は、私の誕生日で……私たちの結婚記念日だったのよ……？」

今日のために用意した豪華な料理も。

今日のために新調した、可愛らしい下着も。

きっと、全部全部無駄になる。

もみじは乾いた笑いを零し、呟いた。

「どうせ、誠司は今日も帰って来ないもの……。やっと、やっと誠司と本当の意味で一緒になれる、と思ったのに」

結婚して、2年。

もみじと誠司は結婚して2年になるが、まだ本当の夫婦にはなっていなかった。

初夜の日も、もみじの義妹である胡桃が体調を崩し、倒れたと言う知らせを聞き、誠司は新婦をそっちのけで胡桃の元に駆けつけた。

ベッドで1人放置されてしまったもみじの元に、誠司は戻ってくる事はなく、気がつけばその日は朝日が上るまでもみじは呆然と過ごした。

そして、結婚1年目の記念日。

もみじと誠司は記念日だから、とホテルでディナーをとり、その日はホテルのスウィートを取っていた。

そこでようやく、誠司に初めて抱かれるのだ、ともみじがドキドキと胸を高鳴らせていた時。

ホテルのレストランを出た誠司のスマホに、胡桃の両親、もみじの義母と父親から連絡が入ったのだ。

胡桃が交通事故に遭い、怪我をしたと。

それを聞いた誠司は、血相を変えてもみじを連れて病院に駆け付けた。

胡桃は大した怪我をしていないと言うのに、胡桃の状態を心配した誠司はその日は病院で過ごし、そのまま彼に付き合ったもみじも病院で朝を迎えた。

誠司が寝ている中、胡桃が醜い笑みを浮かべ、もみじに放った一言が、もみじの記憶から消えない。

「誠司さんは、姉さんより私の方が大事なのね。姉さんは可哀想だわ」

勝ち誇ったような顔と、言葉。

誠司は、こんな言葉を醜い笑みで告げる胡桃の姿を知らないのだ。

醜悪さに歪む胡桃のこの顔を。

嘲笑う心の腐った胡桃の事を。

それをいくら訴えても、誠司はもみじの事を怒るだけで、真面目に聞いてくれた事は1度もなかった。

義妹が、姉のもみじがいなくなってしまって寂しいんだろう、とあろう事かもみじを諌めるのだ。

姉の関心を引きたいだけだよ、と誠司はいつも言う。

だけど、そんなはずが無い。

その証拠に、誠司が先程電話を切って、すぐ。

もみじのスマホに通知が届く。

もみじは、疲れた顔でスマホを操作し、届いた通知を確認した。

そこには、胡桃からのメッセージが届いていた。

【今日も、私の勝ち♡誠司さんは私の事が大好きなのよ】

勝ち誇った胡桃の顔が容易に浮かび、もみじは唇を噛み締めた。
